Ain’t No Mountain High Enough for Sheri Local adventure-seeker, Sheri Thomson has experienced her fair share of thrilling journeys, but her latest expedition was one she will never forget.

After hearing of the beautiful view from the summit of Mount Kosciusko from her friend Joanne, who had recently hiked there with her daughter Monica, 9, Sheri started planning a camping and hiking holiday. This was with her friends, and her children - Hannah, 8, and Daniel, 6, to experience the view for herself.

In April this year, Sheri and her travelling group, including Joanne, Monica, and another friend Alesha and her children, Chloe, 8, and Lucy, 4, headed off to Thredbo. The first night camping got down to a bonechilling -4°C. Sheri was sleeping in a tent with Hannah and Daniel, and claims it was the coldest she has ever been in her life. Despite the subzero temperature the night before, they decided to tackle the hike up Australia’s highest mountain the next day.

Mount Kosciusko is a thirteen-kilometre return trip from the Thredbo chair lift. Sheri explained to the Gazette, “Once we got off the chair lift, there was a sign that said how far it was to the top. We purposely didn’t tell the kids, especially the younger ones, how far it was. Daniel saw the sign, figured we’d have to get back down, calculated the distance in his head, and said he didn’t think he could do it. I kneeled down and had a chat to him about how strong he is and how I knew he could do it and that if he believed in himself, he would be able to make it all the way there and back”. Last month, Women With Altitude held their annual ‘Altitude Awards’ at the Liverpool Catholic Club. There were 250 attendees all dressed in their finest. It was a very glittery affair and three young singers graced the stage for the evening’s entertainment. 9-year-old Regentville resident, Molly Shaw along with Glenmore Park residents (and cousins), Evelyn Shanley, 13 and Annika Svensson, 15. All of the girls are trained vocalists and were selected to perform at the event based on their skill level.

WWA Founder and CEO, Andrea Turner-Boys, makes a point of involving young girls each year to give them an opportunity to showcase their abilities. This is true to the ethos of her organisation that provides support, encouragement and advice to business women. “We love to take the opportunity to support local and up and coming talent” said Turner-Boys, “and give young performers a place to show off their skills with an enthusiastic and supportive audience”.

Molly opened the show with a jazzy rendition of ‘When you Wish Upon a Star’ by Linda Ronstadt. She surprised the audience with how ‘such a young girl could sing with so much soul’. She says, “I like singing because it allows me to express my feelings and it makes me feel happy when I sing”.

Evelyn gave a beautiful performance of ‘Praying’ by Kesha and had this to say, “I love to sing because it feels like I can let all emotions go and I can show people what I am made of”.

Annika’s beautiful voice dazzled everyone when she delivered an emotional interpretation of ‘Titanium’ by David Guetta and Sia. She loves singing “because it feels so good to get on stage and project what I want to say”. She said that her favourite part of the ball was “noticing all the women who have worked so hard, truly an inspiring event to be a part of”.

Tiny Paws and Big Dreams Things are getting wild at heart as Dingo Den Animal Rescue welcomes their first dingo pups for the season, with more rescues and puppy arrivals expected within the coming months.

Most people may be unaware that tucked away in a quiet residential area of Glenmore Park is a sanctuary known as home for a number of Australian Dingoes, and most recently, five newborn dingo pups. With a rescue group working tirelessly for the plight of the Australian Dingo, these new fluffy additions have certainly brought excitement to the Dingo Den Animal Rescue team, with the season expected to get busier with more rescue cases and more baby pups on the way. With the launch of Dingo Den’s Discovery Experience earlier this year, the general public are now getting the opportunity to meet these amazing creatures up close and personal in an intimate sanctuary learning experience.

Dingo Den Animal Rescue (DDAR) was founded in 2015, and has been caring, rescuing and rehoming dingoes ever since. With their custom-built sanctuary recently having undergone further upgrades, Dingo Den provides a protected space where dingoes can thrive in a natural habitat similar to what they would experience in the wild. With breeding season finished, Dingo Den Animal Rescue are excitedly bracing for what will be a busy season of new dingo pups. The first litter of the season has officially arrived at DDAR with pups and parents (Copper and Bonnie) all doing well. Copper and Bonnie came in to DDAR’s care on Mother’s Day, as dedicated volunteers raced to build a large nursery to home their soon to be family. Five days later four boys and one girl, ranging in colour from tan, sable and black, were born.

“Currently, Dingoes are legislated as “pests” and we are going to work to list them as Wild Animals to give them the dignity and respect that these beautiful creatures deserve.”

(Mark Pearson, MP, MLC for the Animal Justice Party NSW – referencing a recent visit to Dingo Den Animal Rescue) Part of DDAR’s aim is to advocate for the Australian Dingo. Currently dingoes are not protected in the wild and are illegal to keep as pets in a number of states. Dingo Den receives a large number of requests to rehabilitate and rehome dingoes that have fallen into dire circumstances. This can be due to lack of education around dingoes, or sometimes due to legislative requirements. With the aim of educating the broader public about dingoes and how they can benefit our native Australian wildlife and environment, the hope is to gain further momentum in the plight for dingo conservation and protection. Fear and Love in Parenting There are two base emotions – fear and love. How do fear and love play out in your parenting?

Fear-based parenting views the child as “bad”. Love-based parenting views your child as worthy of your love, time, and attention.

Fear-based parenting views the child as “manipulative and attention seeking”. Love-based parenting recognises that all behaviour arises from a need (physical, emotional, intellectual), and sometimes behaviour is a way of attempting to make a connection with a parent.

Fear-based parenting emphasises the need for punishment.

Love-based parenting emphasises the need for guidance, education, and relationship.

Fear-based parenting seeks revenge or payback for a child’s behaviour. Love-based parenting seeks belonging and connection for the child.

Fear-based parenting notices “bad” behaviour. Love-based parenting notices mistaken behaviour.

When we move from fear-based parenting to love-based parenting we move from ME (parent’s agenda) to WE (parent and child together). It is no longer us versus them.

In fear-based parenting the parent reacts. In love-based parenting the parent responds.

In fear-based parenting the child’s feeling are dismissed. In love-based parenting the child’s feelings are acknowledged.

Fear-based parenting focuses on the person and love-based parenting focuses on the behaviour.

Through fear-based parenting, the child experiences shame, which can last a lifetime. Through love-based parenting, the child experiences guilt, which is short-term.

In fear-based parenting, the parent feels shame, blame, and guilt. In love-based parenting, the parent tries to be real.

In fear-based parenting, the parent burdens the child with his or her own feelings, demands an insincere apology, and does not apologise for his or her own mistaken behaviour. In lovebased parenting, the parent talks about OK/not OK for the self and child, seeks relationship repair, admits wrongdoing, and role models saying sorry.

Fear-based parenting values the child for what he or she does.

Love-based parenting values the child for who she or he is.

In fear-based parenting, the parent persuades, nags, begs, yells, and hits. In love-based parenting, the parent is comfortable with setting safe limits and boundaries for children.

In fear-based parenting, the parent is operating at a head level. In love-based parenting, the parent is operating from a heart level.

From Primary to High School:

How to Ease the Transition

High school is a daunting prospect for many pre-teens ready to embark on the next stage of their schooling. For some parents, the disbelief that their pride and joy is almost a teenager goes hand in hand with the anxiety of them starting high school. If this is you, you can rest assured that you are not the only one experiencing these feelings, with studies showing the transition to high school is an exciting yet critical change that leaves some families overwhelmed by unfamiliarity.

Most high schools provide transition programs, in the second half of Year Six, which help to alleviate concerns and ensure that students feel a sense of familiarity and support in their upcoming new environment. Students requiring extra specialist support usually have access to extra transition sessions and important information about each student is shared between the primary and high school.

Whilst schools take these measures to ensure a smooth transition, some students and their families remain consumed by the impending change. The good news, however, is that there are ways in which you can assist in preparing your child for high school that are proven to be effective.

Here are some practical ways in which you can help ease the transition: 1. Organise for your child to visit the school and become familiar with the environment as well as practicing the route your child will take to school each day. If they are catching the bus, perhaps take a drive to the bus stop and follow the route to and from school. This will reduce anxiety and create familiarity around the school and how to get there.

2. Facilitate opportunities for your child to get to know other children who will also be attending the same school. Seek out other families in the same position and team up – check out to see if there are any existing social groups in the school and get involved.

3. Encourage your child to be more independent by giving them the opportunity to make decisions, manage daily chores and complete homework. They could devise a schedule or timetable with you to follow and then self-manage the tasks.

4. Listen to your child and give them the opportunity to speak freely about how they feel throughout the process. This year, Regentville Public School is 150 years old and they are celebrating this amazing achievement on Wednesday 26 September 2018.

Spreading the Love

Ingredients 350g dried rigatoni pasta 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil 500g pork mince 1 brown onion, sliced 3 garlic cloves, crushed 2 small carrots, finely chopped 2 celery stalks, finely chopped 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh rosemary leaves 1/2 cup dry white wine 1/4 cup tomato paste 1 chicken stock cube 200g fresh ricotta 2 tablespoons lemon juice, plus wedges to serve 1/3 cup grated parmesan Fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves, to serve Preparation 1. Cook pasta following packet directions. Drain, reserving 1 cup cooking liquid.

2. Preheat oven to 200C/180C fan-forced.

3. Heat oil in a large deep ovenproof frying pan over mediumhigh heat. Add mince. Cook, breaking up mince with the back of a wooden spoon, for 6 minutes or until browned.

Add onion, garlic, carrot, celery and rosemary. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes or until onion has softened.

Add wine. Cook for 2 minutes or until reduced by half. Add tomato paste and stock cube. Stir to combine.

4. Stir in pasta cooking liquid. Bring to a simmer. Add pasta, tossing to combine. Remove from heat. Season with salt and pepper.

5. Combine ricotta, lemon juice and half of the parmesan in a bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Dollop ricotta mixture over pasta mixture. Sprinkle with remaining parmesan.

Remember that first time you tasted a homemade jam.

Whether it was smothered on a hot piece of toast or dripping off a fresh scone, there’s nothing quite like the taste, especially if it’s made with love. Glenmore Park resident Graham Larkham has been making homemade jams for 40 years and I guess you could say the proof is in the pudding!

“I started making jams in the late seventies. We lived in the country and the local shows had jam entries. It was a great time and opportunity to make them back then” explained Larkham.

There is certainly an art to making good homemade jams.

The first tip is to always use fresh fruit. He makes his famous lemon butter using lemons he picks from his tree at his own home. It doesn’t get any fresher than that.

Depending on the type of fruit that you use, preparation time can vary. Lemon butter takes less than an hour to make, after you have all the ingredients on hand. Marmalades need to be soaked overnight. Once soaked, the cooking time is 1 to 1 ½ hours.

“I enjoy making jams. I like the old-fashioned types such as melon and lemon and also melon and pineapple. They’re my favourites to make” Larkham said.

Larkham said that anyone can make homemade jams, with a few simple tips. Firstly, remember the taste that the old preserves had. This could have been one that your Grandmother or Grandfather may have made when you were growing up as a child. Get a cookbook and do some research online.

It’s important to use the right kind of fruit if you’re wanting to make homemade jam. He wanted to make an old jam called Melon and Lemon, with a Jam Melon or Pie Melons, but these are not sold in the green grocer’s shop anymore. After a little bit of looking, Larkham managed to get one at the Royal Easter Show from the Agriculture Displays.

So, what’s the secret to making a good jam? “Patience” was his reply.

A Group for all Tastes

Taste of Everything Women’s Group was formed in Glenmore Park six years ago, to bring together local like-minded women to chat, participate in activities and enjoy each other’s company.

The group is co-ordinated by Martha Thornley and Linsey Hall and meets on Thursdays from 9:30am to 11:30am, during school terms, at the Floribunda Community Centre in Glenmore Park.

With 10 regular group members, the friends regularly participate in a host of activities like crafting, quilting, crocheting and cooking. They also take excursions and bus trips once a term to places like the Nan Tien Temple in Wollongong or the Blue Mountains.

“Taste of Everything is literally just that. It’s a women’s group where members can come and chat, participate in activities if they wish and to just enjoy one another’s company. People can learn something new each week, meet new friends, have a good laugh and some fun” said Thornley.

The group is very friendly and values all their members. Everyone has their say and they are encouraged to suggest activities and excursions for one another. At the end of the term, they all get together and plan this out.

“Everyone is so nice and positive. It’s great to have a group of friends like this” added Thornley.

Their next project is to organise the ever-popular Christmas Party in December. The group enjoyed cruising the Nepean River last year on the majestic Nepean Belle and are looking for a venue equally as exciting this year. “I love this group and all of my new friends!” beamed new member Margret Pearce.

The Pride of Glenmore Park The Emu Plains/Glenmore Park Lions Junior AFL Club are roaring their way through the 2018 season, thanks to an increase in player numbers and support for AFL in Western Sydney at a high.

The Season Launch kicked off with the New South Wales Junior Clubs March in April at Spotless Stadium in Sydney. Local players had the exciting opportunity to march around the stadium before the GWS Giants and Brisbane Lions AFL game.

Support from the GWS Giants has continued this season, with several Giants players coming to visit the local juniors at Dukes Oval to assist with activities and their training nights. “We enjoy hosting great family friendly game days at our club. After all the behind-the-scenes jobs and organising, it’s great to see happy kids playing the game they love and smiling faces from the parents and families that come to watch� said Wayne Kenny, President of Emu Plains/Glenmore Park Lions Junior AFL Club.

With 270 players registered so far this year, the local club is looking to build on last season’s success which saw three teams going on to win their Grand Finals.

Chronic Back Pain - There is a Real Solution!

Most people have lower back pain at some point in their lives. Sometimes pain disappears after mild anti inflammatory medication, a little rest, or light massage. But often it stays around and becomes a chronic (long lasting) form of back pain.

At best, this type of pain can be an annoying ache that’s a bit better when you warm up.

At worst, such pain can be constant & debilitating. Pain may radiate down into the buttocks & legs (known as sciatica). It may radiate further down to the tips of the toes. Sometimes sufferers may experience ‘paraesthesia’s. These are strange feelings including sensations such as tingling, cold, heat or even loss of sensation down into affected legs, feet or toes.

Such chronic back problems can stop you working, playing, sleeping, eating, thinking, and can leave you frustrated especially when you can’t get treatment to resolve the issue. Many people go for years without adequate relief. Of course, many different causes can lead to such chronic back pain.

Various situations may cause simple but chronic overuse injury to back muscles for example: 1. carrying excess stomach weight 2. pregnancy 3. poor posture 4. continual bending – e.g. brick layers Other situations such as heavy or incorrect lifting may lead to acute back injury.

Importantly, once injury occurs, it is one common factor that

sustains the cycle of pain. Here’s how this happens. In both the above situations, injured back muscles in the affected area swell with toxin-filled fluids that have leaked from injured cells. This fluid causes the muscles & nerves in the affected area to become inflamed and painful. The swelling reduces blood & lymph flow to the affected muscles and connective tissue, which locks the tissues into an ongoing cycle of inflammation. The affected muscles also shorten. This can lock the spine into an unnatural position which enhances stress on the area, hinders healing and perpetuates re-injury, leading over the longer term to chronic age-related changes.

Exercise may relieve pain, but can sometimes also worsen the problem. In most instances the best solution lies in working muscles using physical therapy thus: 1. Lengthening muscles and surrounding connective tissue 2. Removing the inflammatory build-up in back muscles This type of work allows muscle function & spine position to normalise. Cases of disc bulge or even disc protrusion (the old ‘slipped disc’) can be remediated in this way. Protruding discs begin to retract, scar over and in time, with regular treatment, one can often relieve back pain completely, even in many longstanding cases.

The same is true for many chronic shoulder & knee complaints.

The Answer for a Dark Soul For all the perks of successful societies such as ours – I mean the on-tap entertainment, opportunities for work, travel, sport, creativity and leisure – there are many dark souls about.

Depression, for example is at a high. Also, I often meet people with souls darkened by the incredibly painful journey of divorce.

Others are convinced they are not successful enough and try to succeed more to soothe their dark soul.

Jesus Christ modelled another way to live with light in your soul – to do things for the well-being of others. Let’s call it love. Whatever we call it, it shifts our focus from ourselves, our problems, our unrealistic ambitions, and our deep-down brokenness to something else. That alone will let some light into our souls, perhaps because we look up and see something beautiful, or because we realise that compared to others in need we are actually doing okay.

Not only that, but we also get to do what we were made for – to love. That’s why, we feel like a fish in water when we do it.

No wonder counsellors and psychologists are increasingly encouraging their patients to go and work at a soup kitchen or to find other ways to help others when their souls are dark.

Now, this glimpse into the way of Jesus Christ will help you to start to see what is attractive about him. No crusty religion here!

As we follow him and light floods into our souls we realise that Jesus Christ has the sort of bedrock wisdom that makes life work.

Not only so, but he acted for our well-being by dying on a cross to pay the penalty for our sins and was raised from the dead having defeated death for us. Could all of this be true? If so, it brings light into our very existence as human beings and blesses us with hope that physical death is not the end of things for us or those we love.

Take Another Look at Church Deep down most people know they really should get to Church a bit more. While many people know this, what sometimes stops them is a fear of the unknown.

Either because they haven’t been for a while or haven’t been at all, there is a fear of what Church might be like. Some people think Church is a strange, irrelevant place or they might be worried about standing out or they won’t know what to do or that what happens won’t make sense.

At Glenmore Park Anglican Church, we firmly believe that what God says to us through the Bible is relevant to every part of our life and relevant to every person, regardless of age or whether you’re male or female, old or young, so we work hard to make people feel welcome.

We often ask people who come to our Church, “Why do you stay?”

The most frequent answer is because they find the people are

friendly, they can understand what is going on and they find what we do is helpful to their life.

When people understand that Church is about a group of people encouraging and supporting each other in life, to know and understand God’s goodness, and that it is not about rules and regulations, and that it can even be enjoyable and relaxing, it makes such a difference!

One of the great things we find about the people who come to our Church is that many of them have never been to a Church before and although at first they might be nervous, after a few weeks of getting to know us and seeing what we are on about, these people say that Church is the highlight of their week!

Each week we want to help people discover who Jesus is and why he is such a significant, fascinating person. Can I encourage you, take the plunge and join us; we’d love to meet you!

He was the first one back and the rest of the group only just ended up getting to the chair lifts with ten minutes to spare before it shut for the day.

In total, the hike took them four hours and thirty-nine minutes. It will be a memory that the children will hold for a lifetime, and as for Sheri, the view from the top was definitely worth it!

As July sets in, so does the snow over the mountain and it sure does send chills right through you!

I must admit, Winter is my favourite season. You can't beat a homemade soup, by the fire wearing your fluffy socks, cosy and warm.

When I was much younger, I recall being responsible for bringing the chopped wood into the house from the shed. I would often grizzle about this task, I also remember all the splinters and heavy work in doing so.

Somehow, those memories don't dull my love for Winter, in fact they bring a smile to my face of treasured memories of days gone by.

True to the old adage, "The best things in life are free, treasure them!"
