Big Smiles for Big School It’s that time of year, where thousands of girls and boys across the state wave goodbye to their parents as they start ‘big school’ for the first time. One of those children starting school for the first time will be local girl Megan Boros.

Five-year-old Megan will be attending Regentville Public School this year, which will also mark the 150th Anniversary of the local school. Megan will be the fifth member of the Boros household to attend the school, with her four older brothers also having started their school journey there.

When asked what she will look forward to the most about starting Kindergarten, Megan smiled and said, “Doing things with everybody and playing outside on the equipment”.

With three of Megan’s brothers still attending the school and one off to high school this year, there’s no doubt she’ll have some support to help with the big school jitters. “They all feel happy, proud and excited to be able to show her around the school” said Anthony Boros, Megan’s father.

It never gets easier watching your child walk through the school gates for the very first time, particularly if they’re the last to leave and join their siblings in the big, wide world. “It will feel a little bit emotional as Megan is our last child to start school. Play for Mulgoa Valley Football Club With the 2018 soccer season getting ready, the Mulgoa Valley Football Club are a local club who are looking forward to a big and exciting year ahead. The family club, who are located only 10 minutes from Penrith and the M4 Motorway, are looking to attract new players for the upcoming season.

The Mulgoa Valley Football Club had 12 teams compete in the local competition last year, ranging from the Under 5’s right through to the All Ages. Some of the club’s highlights included several teams finishing in the top 4, as well as the Under 11’s going through the season unbeaten, until the last game when they had a number of players missing.

This year the club are hoping to have a great season, thanks to the recruitment of new players and further developing their grounds. With a new committee on board, there are lots of new ideas and renewed energy and enthusiasm which promises to be exciting to be a part of.

“We are a family club. Virtually everyone knows one another or somebody else at the club. Up until now, it’s been very much a word of mouth club with very little advertising. We have great facilities which rival the best in the district” said Ed Crowther, Club Competition Secretary and Life Member.

As the only sporting club left in Mulgoa, the local community can get behind Mulgoa Valley Football Club by sponsoring a team. It’s a great opportunity to get involved, whilst also having your children playing sport locally without having to travel too far. Mulgoa Valley Football Club are one of the most successful clubs in the area, representing the district on many occasions in the NSW Champion of Champions with great distinction.

Dr James Har – previously at Glenmore Park for many years, has opened his practice at St Clair Mediclinic.

Local Regentville residents, Glen and Renee Jones and their three sons, were looking forward to celebrating Christmas together last year with all the joy that the festive season brings, just like anyone else. That would all come crashing down for the family of five, just a few short weeks from Christmas.

Tragedy struck the Jones’ after an accident at home, which saw both parents injured, with Glen sustaining broken bones in his neck and Renee a serious leg injury resulting in hospitalisation.

This dire situation was made even more heartbreaking, with Glen the family’s only breadwinner, driver and primary carer of Renee, looking at a 6-week recovery period that included surgery and rehabilitation. Renee is bound to a wheelchair due to a debilitating genetic disease that continues to affect her ability to stand or even walk.

With Glen off work and the additional trauma to Renee with her injured leg, this wonderful family who are forever giving, did not once ask for any assistance.

A further devastating blow came with Glen’s mother sadly passing away in Queensland, whilst he was in hospital awaiting surgery.

What happened next was a true show of community and Christmas spirit! Good friends Michelle, Kylie and Belinda came together to organise a fundraising page that was not only embraced by family and friends, but also complete strangers that had never met the Jones’.

Together this wonderful support helped them financially, as well as help with food, clothing and even unexpected Christmas presents for the three boys.

“We cannot thank the local community enough. The support from everyone so far has been fantastic and it has all definitely helped us. It has been more than we could have ever imagined” said Glen and Renee Jones.

The Jones family are on the road to recovery. Glen is now out of hospital and his rehabilitation continues. With plates and screws inserted, restricted movement in his neck will mean a change in his day to day routine as a forklift driver at work.

Renee’s injuries are healing, and they are both looking forward to getting better.

Aquatic Exercise Christmas is over once again, and if you are like the majority of us, the season to be merry has left a few extra kilos to be remembered by! Many of us make a New Year’s Resolution to get fitter, but often we try the same old forms of exercise and get bored, or go too hard too soon and get injured, and ultimately fail. Maybe it’s time to try something new?

The benefits of training in water for both athletes and the general public cannot be underestimated. When standing in chest deep water, a person weighs only 10 percent of his or her normal body weight. The reduction means you can work out harder at higher intensity levels several days in a row, without causing wear and tear on your joints and general muscle soreness. The support provided by the water also makes it an ideal environment for people who suffer from arthritis, back pain, heart disease, obesity, fibromyalgia, or multiple sclerosis.

In addition, water is 15 times more resistant than air, so working out in a pool for 30 minutes gives you similar benefits of a two-hour, land-based workout. Training in the water additionally ensures that you stay cool in warmer temperatures and prevent overheating – particularly important with our extremely high temperatures this past month!

Many people use water resistance training when injured to maintain their cardiovascular fitness with less impact and therefore less stress on joints, bones, and muscles because of the buoyancy of water. The water is also ideal for post workout recovery and stretching. So what options are there to exercise in the water? Lap swimming is the ultimate all-in-one exercise, working most muscles in the body with every stroke, increasing flexibility and muscle endurance. Muscles are strengthened and toned as a result of water resistance, core strength is improved, and the nature of breathing whilst swimming promotes greater lung capacity. Joining a local swim club is a great way to swim for fitness whilst socialising with other fans of swimming. We run weekly classes available for children and teenagers who like to swim for fitness, without the training schedule and competitive aspect that comes with squad swimming.

Aquarobics is another great option, despite it’s image problem - often being seen just as an activity for retirees, the

injured or the unfit. In reality, Aquarobics is an exercise option which can be highly challenging and effective, and now attracts a mixed audience of participants across ages, genders and Aquarobics class types, ranging from gentle exercise to high intensity and deep water training.

If you prefer to be outdoors, the waves at the beach provide both turbulence and resistance, constantly challenging the whole body to remain upright or swim through the water.

And anyone who has run on soft sand will know the challenge this presents………. in my mind I look like something out of Baywatch, but I probably look more like something out of Bondi Rescue………….

Whichever option you choose, please observe basic swim safety and enjoy your water workouts this summer. Good luck!

Adriana to Compete in Australian Supermodel of the Year Final

Local model Adriana Maltese’s amazing quest in the Australian Supermodel of the Year competition has continued, after being selected in the Top 25 to compete in the finals.

The finals of the competition are taking place in Bali during the first week of this month, where the winner will be announced.

Adriana capped off a big year in 2017, with news that she had made the finals on the 21st of December. She received the exciting news via email and a live broadcast on the Australian Supermodel of the Year competition’s Facebook page.

She is now focused on preparing for the finals, which will see her participate in various runway shows and photo shoots. Adriana’s collaborations with many photographer’s since entering the competition and the practicing of runway skills have helped her move one step closer to her dream.

“The amount of support from everyone is already overwhelming. Thank you so much” beamed Ms. Maltese.

“I look forward to attending the finals and experiencing Bali! This is a great opportunity for me to pursue my modelling career”.

The Country Show

Roll up, roll up ladies and gentlemen and head to the 114th Luddenham Show, to be held on the 17th and the 18th of February at the historic Luddenham Showground. The Luddenham Show is known as ‘THE COUNTRY SHOW’ and is traditionally the first of the lead up shows to the Sydney Royal Easter Show, as many months of hard work culminate for some of the best in livestock and stage acts in Australia.

With these ever-changing times for the district, the Committee of Luddenham A.H & I Society are proud to keep the traditions of the district’s biggest annual event alive and well. Both days are ‘chock-a-block’ filled with entertainment and activities for the young and the not so young alike.

There will be the traditional show favourites such as two full days of horse classes, cattle going under the judge’s eye on the Saturday, whilst the wood chips fly on the Sunday with not just some of Australia’s best but also international axe men cutting logs. You don’t need to be a world class woodchopper or breeder of top quality livestock to get involved with your local show. A wide variety of pavilion categories will enable everyone to take part. These range from home brew, flowers, photography, art, needlework, best scarecrow, work boots, poultry to Lego designs.

This year’s main arena entertainment would not be out of place at a big Royal Show. HLS Trick Riding, hailing from Queensland and recognised as one of Australia’s foremost horse trick riding outfits will be there. Considered the most dangerous sport in the world is the open bull ride. Cowboys will pit their wits against 800kgs of raging steak for 8 seconds, trying to take home a pocket full of cash and glory. One of the most popular Sunday entertainments taking place is the 3 sheep dog trials.

Back by popular demand, after making a great debut last year, will be the crowd favourite demolition derby. Who will be the last vehicle left?

You can enter and compete in the dog high jump, yank-a-ute, poet’s breakfast, ice cream eating, whip cracking, talent quest and country kids contest.

Stage entertainment will feature sheep shearing demo’s, clowns Kozi and Pinky, singers, dancers, along with the walkabout reptile show. Back after many years is the Miss Luddenham Show Girl Competition. ‘The Cool’ will hit the stage on Saturday night, playing a wide variety of music. The team behind the Sydney Harbour New Year’s Eve fireworks are booked to light up the night sky.

Active Kids Guidelines Launched Parents of school children across New South Wales are encouraged to take advantage of the $100 ‘Active Kids’ rebate for sporting and fitness related costs launched on January 31.

Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies MP welcomed the release of the ‘Active Kids’ Rebate Guidelines explaining how families can take advantage of the rebate.

“This rebate addresses one of the most important issues across our local community–easing the cost of living for families,” Tanya Davies said.

“We know how household costs can add up and want to ease the pressure on families where we can, so we are encouraging parents to take advantage of this rebate and enrol their children in their preferred sport.

“These activities could include traditional sport such as netball, football or cricket; as well as other fitness or physical activities such as swimming classes or dance.”

Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres said, parents will be able to claim up to $100 per school enrolled child per calendar year as a voucher to reduce the cost of eligible sport and fitness activities.

“Every dollar in the household budget counts, and this $100 will reduce a barrier that stops kids from playing more sport,” Mr Ayres said.

“Through Active Kids, we want to make sport more affordable and continue our target of reducing childhood obesity rates by five per cent over 10 years.”

The rebate is not means tested so every family has access to this initiative. Parents will be able to register for the voucher online or through their local Service NSW Centre.

Charlise’s Crusade for Dyslexia Surveyors Creek Public School student Charlise Cameron is not your average schoolgirl.

She is passionate about breaking down the stigma that can be attached to dyslexia and is achieving extraordinary things when it comes to educating her fellow students, teachers and even Senators about this.

Charlise was recently awarded a Lindsay Award from Emma Husar MP, Federal Member for Lindsay, at a formal assembly late last year at the school, after being nominated by her teachers for her journey and achievements with dyslexia. She was also successful in writing to and receiving a letter from Senator Murray Watt from Queensland, describing what it’s like to have dyslexia.

Charlise was diagnosed with dyslexia in year 3. She wasn’t your typical dyslexia diagnosis, as she had no trouble reading, and in fact was in the higher range of reading levels. Her concerns were during spelling tests and she would miss out letters whilst spelling words. She has struggled with maths and understanding basic concepts. The family have since found that there are different types of dyslexia, with the maths type dyslexia called dyscalculia.

Charlise has an 8-year-old brother, who also has dyslexia. He was struggling to read in Kindergarten and it was diagnosed at the end of that year. He is now progressing with the right strategies put into place.

“As a parent, it is disheartening to watch your child struggling, especially when it comes so natural to others. There is so much more help needed, continuous repetition of the school work daily. We organise MSL tutoring, which is a dyslexia-based learning style. The progress both of my children have made is remarkable” said Suzanne Cameron, Charlise’s mother.

“You have to deal with the low self-esteem and lack of confidence at times with their struggles. These are real tear jerker moments as you feel helpless. At times, there is the frustration, as dyslexia children can be labelled dumb. But you couldn’t be more wrong, as they have extremely high IQ’s. It is just their brain learns in a different way to others” she added.

Charlise had some wise words to share, when it came to understand just what dyslexia was; “It’s important for people not to judge you. You already feel like you’re dumb and if others say it to you, you start to believe it. If you get the right help in the classroom, it will give you so much success”.

Her parents would like to see greater community awareness for dyslexia, as well as support for other parents, students and teachers in schools.

WHAT’S COOKING

Hearty Lamingtons ingredients 3/4 cup (115g) self-raising flour 1/3 cup (50g) cornflour 4 eggs 3/4 cup (155g) caster sugar 1/3 cup (80ml) boiling water 10g butter, melted 1 1/2 cups (325ml) strawberry topping 2 cups (170g) desiccated coconut preparation 1. Preheat oven to 180°C. Grease a square 23cm cake pan. Sift the flour and cornflour together 2-3 times.

2. Use an electric mixer to whisk eggs in a bowl until pale and fluffy. While whisking, gradually add the sugar, 1 tablespoonful at a time, until well combined. Continue whisking until thick and pale and a ribbon trails when the beaters are lifted.

3. Sift combined flours over egg mixture and use a whisk to gently fold until just combined. Combine the boiling water and butter in a jug and pour down the side of the bowl.

Gently fold until just combined. Pour into prepared pan and gently smooth the surface. Bake in preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until cake springs back when lightly pressed in the centre. Remove from oven and immediately turn out onto a wire rack. Set aside to cool completely.

4. Use a 6cm-diameter heart-shaped pastry cutter and a small, serrated knife to cut heart shapes from the sponge cake.

5. Pour the topping into a shallow bowl and place the coconut on a plate. Dip a sponge heart into the topping and carefully roll to lightly coat. Allow excess to drip off. Place on the coconut and gently roll to evenly coat, lightly pressing to secure. Place on a plate. Continue with remaining sponge hearts. Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

Peach And Nectarine Frosé Iceblocks ingredients 2 tablespoons caster sugar 1 cup (250ml) sparkling rosé or fruit juice 1/2 yellow peach, stoned, thinly sliced 1/2 white nectarine, stoned, thinly sliced 50g cherries, halved, pitted 1/2 cup mint leaves preparation 1. Combine the sugar and 1/3 cup (80ml) water in a saucepan over low heat. Cook, stirring, for 1-2 mins or until the sugar dissolves. Remove from heat. Stir in the wine or fruit juice.

Tops the World!

St Paul’s Grammar School, Penrith, Class of 2017 International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma students received their results, including an equal world best result, highlighting the long history of outstanding academic achievement at the School.

St Paul’s Grammar School, Penrith, is celebrating the achievement of the Class of 2017 International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma students. Sarah Bakker is the Dux of the Class of 2017, achieving a perfect IB score of 45 out of a maximum possible 45. This equates to the top possible Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) equivalent of 99.95. This also means that Sarah is the equal top graduating Year 12 student in the world. Amongst other results, Yutong Chen and Susan Graham also received outstanding results of IB 44 (ATAR 99.85).

A total of 21 students achieved IB scores of 33 or above, equating to ATARs above 90. The number of students attempting the IB this year was 55, or 70% of the Year 12, 2017 class. IB Diploma results are not included in School Rankings based on HSC scores, and as such do not reflect St Paul’s Grammar School as one of the best non-selective schools in NSW for academic results. Combining HSC and IB scores, 22 students achieved ATARs above 90 (28%) and 38 students achieved ATARs above 80 (47%), affirming St Paul’s standing as a leading non-selective co-educational school.

Principal, Ian Wake, congratulated students, families and the staff of St Paul’s, noting that “these outstanding results reinforce St Paul's strong academic reputation, and demonstrate the incredible value of a holistic education. St Paul’s offers a continuum of IB education from PreKindergarten to Year 12. The History and the Mystery of Valentine’s Day

Chocolates, greeting cards, red roses, champagne, jewellery, teddy bears holding love hearts that read ‘I Love You’, date nights, marriage proposals, even weddings…it’s Valentine’s Day! The 14th of February is big business for restaurants, florists, jewellers, greeting card companies and of course the beautiful chocolate makers of the world - where would we be without them?

While it’s true that there is a very commercial aspect to this holiday in its modern form, the history behind Valentine’s Day is rather mysterious.

The legend of St. Valentine as a patron saint is complex because the Catholic Church recognises more than one with the name of Valentine or Valentinus. One story speaks of a priest in 3rd century Rome who performed secret weddings during a time when it had been outlawed by Emperor Claudius II, who thought that single men made better soldiers. When this was discovered, it didn’t end well for the priest. Let’s just say, the Emperor did not reward him with a box of chocolates in the

shape of a heart.

Another tale suggests that ‘Valentine’ was put to death for helping Christians to escape from Roman prisons and yet another claim that he was a prisoner himself who fell in love with his jailor’s daughter. He allegedly signed a letter to her ‘From your Valentine’.

By the middle ages, Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France and a pagan festival, Lupercalia, developed relating to fertility. It was replaced at the end of the 5th century by Pope Gelasius as a feast day for the Christian church.

The first written Valentines associated with love started appearing after 1400. Exchanging cards and gifts became popular in the 18th century spreading to other countries and eventually developing in to what it is today.

If you are feeling relaxed, you are probably wondering how to maintain that feeling as the kids get back into school, and you get back into work/ ac tivities/appointments.

If you are already feeling frazzled, there is hope.

One of the five key aspects of Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) is Looking After Yourself. If you are an empty cup, how can you fill your children’s cups? If you are overwhelmed, stressed, cranky, tired, it is so much harder to meet all of the demands placed on you. Your relationships suffer.

When I mention this, parents usually say they don’t have time to look after themselves. They say they don’t have time to spend hours at their favourite activity.

I agree.

You have to find small moments every day, to do something that fills your cup. Take 5 minutes regularly throughout the day to decompress. Take time to stretch, draw, colour, sip your tea or coffee, sit in the sun, watch the trees sway in the breeze, breathe.. Anything that gives you a moment of calm.

It’s all about not doing very much and paying attention to the present moment. Drop your thoughts about the past or the future, and focus on what is happening in the ‘here and now’. This is called ‘mindfulness’, and it is being used to treat many mental health conditions like anxiety and depression.

But it can be used by anyone, and should probably be used by everyone. This is not hippy-la-la stuff, it’s science! Humans are not machines, they need rest, delight, joy, connection, and meaning to keep them going.

It’s hard to do at first, but practice makes perfect. When you become accustomed to taking these moments for yourself, you may start to include your children in some of these moments.

You might start taking time to connect with your kids over something simple You might decompress together, and in that moment, you are deepening your relationship and teaching them a handy tool for life.

Tips For Goal Setting in 2018 We’re already a month into the new year and for many that carries a mixed bag of emotion about the year ahead. So, I’m going to share some tips on goal setting.

Tip #1: Review What Was Take a moment to review 2017. What worked? What didn’t work? What needs to change?

Tip #2: Less Is More I find when working with business owners that three top-level goals is optimal and avoids overwhelm.

Tip #3: Have Purpose Make your goals specific. I like to use the equation: X to Y by date. (I will increase revenue from $500K in February 2018 to $750K by December 2018).

Once you’ve set your goals for the year, work backwards to break these down into smaller specific goals that each have a direct impact on achieving your top-level goals.

I like to stick with a ‘process of three’. Eg. To achieve your toplevel goals, what three specific goals do you need to achieve each quarter? To achieve your quarterly goals, what three goals do you need to achieve each month? To achieve those, what three goals do you need to achieve weekly? And finally, what three goals do you need to achieve daily? You begin to see how acting on purpose with purpose every day stacks up to achieving your goals for the year.

Tip #4: Write It Down When you’ve worked through the process, write it down and make it visible. This is key to execution and this is where most

people fail. Map it in a calendar and you have your high-level action plan.

Tip#5: Stay Agile We’re living in dynamic times. Your goals are about propelling your business forward, not holding it back. Don’t let them paralyse you. Stay agile, adaptable and flex with flux.

Local electrical business, DAGS Electrical, pride themselves on serving the community the best they can through their experience, since starting in 2000, right through to their exceptional customer service and personal touch.

Owner Rick Jenkins, started the business doing antennas, before branching out into AV gear and mounting televisions. In 2012, he obtained his electrical licence, followed by an Advanced Diploma in Renewable Energies. Night Work Continues On The Northern Road Motorists are advised of changed traffic conditions on the M4 Motorway off ramp at The Northern Road.

Roads and Maritime Services continues to widen The Northern Road between Glenmore Parkway and Jamison Road and build a new interchange across the M4 Motorway at South Penrith.

Work on The Northern Road includes installing and adjusting barriers and signage, line marking, building temporary lanes as well as the installation of new drainage.

On the M4 Motorway, work includes building bridge structures, temporary access roads and installing and adjusting barriers and signage.

To reduce the impact to the community, work will be carried out between 7pm and 7am until Wednesday 28 February, weather

permitting.

The shoulder on the M4 Motorway off-ramp at The Northern Road will be closed to traffic until early 2019 and pedestrian access will change at the corner of Parker Street and Smith Street.

Pedestrian access will be restricted on The Northern Road from Wentworth Road to Bringelly Road and Glenmore Parkway to Aspen Street.

Motorists are advised to follow the direction of all signs and traffic control and keep to the reduced speed limits.

Structural Scoliosis – You Can Get Some Pain Relief Unlike functional scoliosis, structural scoliosis is not a simple lateral curve of the spine. It involves a more complex threedimensional deformity of vertebrae. Thus, the side to side curvature we see is normally a product of two abnormalities 1. Increased lordosis (like the bend in your lower back) 2. Abnormal rotation of individual vertebrae with respect to one another Structural scoliosis is actually very common. "Normal� children have neither straight nor symmetrical spines. Fifteen per cent of children show evidence of a lateral curvature on a visual examination and as many as 30 per cent with a more accurate measurement. Anatomists two centuries ago clearly demonstrated that everyone had a scoliosis, albeit of small magnitude (Dickson 1984). Structural scoliosis is also 7 times more common in women.

It can be classified by the type of curve that is seen (see picture) or by the age it develops i.e. • infantile • juvenile • adolescent By far the majority of cases are adolescent onset and screening of children allows early intervention to minimise progression.

Doctors measure the size of the curve from X-rays using the Cobb technique (see below). A curvature of 20 degrees or more is considered significant, but this is rare. For example, only 2-5 people per 1000 with structural scoliosis of thoracic spine have a curve of 20 degrees or more.

Most cases of structural scoliosis (80%) are of a type called ‘idiopathic scoliosis’. Idiopathic just means that no one knows

why it occurred. For the rest there is a laundry list of conditions that lead to scoliosis, but some include: • Congenital (bone abnormalities present at birth) • Neuromuscular conditions such as • Cerebral Palsy • Muscular Dystrophy • Connective Tissue Disorders • Marfan’s Syndrome • Rheumatoid Arthritis • Certain Dwarves • Trauma • Fractures • Irradiation • Surgery You may need to consult an orthopaedic or neurosurgeon, and treatments in severe cases may include a ‘Harrington’ metal rod, and / or bone grafts to stabilize the spine.

People with structural scoliosis are often afflicted with great back pain. They have tremendous muscle fatigue, because day-in & day-out for years, the muscles around the spine have to stabilise the body around a bent spine. This is very hard work indeed.

Fatigued muscles cells sustain damage & release chemicals of inflammation. These cause fluid accumulation & muscle swelling, and pain.

Physical therapy can help relieve pain for people with structural scoliosis, however the treatment needs to be regular and ongoing to be beneficial because the back muscles are continually over worked. If you have structural scoliosis and would like some advice, please come see us at the clinic.

Signs of Heat Stroke Common signs include: â&#x20AC;˘ Incessant panting; Drooling, salivating; Agitation, restlessness; Very red or pale gums; Bright red tongue; Increased heart rate; Breathing distress; Vomiting, Diarrhoea (possibly with blood); Signs of mental confusion; Delirium; Dizziness; Staggering; Lethargy; Weakness; Muscle tremors; Seizures; Collapsing and lying down; Little to no urine production; Coma or Death.

Discover the Real Jesus Many things make Jesus stand out from anyone else in history.

Jesus’ speeches, such as the Sermon on the Mount, which you can read in the Bible’s New Testament gospel of Matthew, contain such wisdom that the force of what He says still impacts us today with power and urgency.

Jesus raised the bar on relationships. In Jesus’ view, people matter.

Relationships matter. Care for people is to be given the highest priority; forgiveness, patience, goodness, kindness, gentleness, self control; these are the qualities that make life work.

Jesus challenged people on things like anger and hatred. He spoke on adultery and cheap lust. He challenged the view of those promoting an easy attitude to divorce, which cheapened marriage.

He spoke on the importance of being true to your word, keeping your promises; not seeking revenge but to love and pray for your enemies. This was and continues to be radial stuff!

Jesus also explains how any person can live the good life. This

is part of what He says; “Blessed are the poor in spirit...those who mourn...the meek...those who hunger and thirst for righteousness... the merciful...the pure in heart...the peacemakers.”

Jesus challenged those who would listen to Him to humbly recognisee our need for God. Learning from God about being passionate for what is right, true and good; having your heart as goal, mercy and kindness; your heart ruled by purity, honesty, peacemaking.

These ideas seem basic yet they are hard to find in our world.

Jesus insists; the “blessed” or good life will be found by the person who seeks after God and lives with these things as their goal.

But the crucial question remains, “What will you do with Jesus?”

Jesus calls on all people not just to hear His words but to put them into practice by building your life on knowing and following Him. Can I encourage you to start your year by joining us at Glenmore Park Anglican Church? Don’t Try To Be Happy Or Successful!

WHAT?! This sounds crazy but there is widespread thinking, back as far as ancient times, that true happiness and success are not generally found by pursuing them.

This is a pertinent topic to consider for the start of a New Year.

Viktor Frankl was a psychiatrist who survived the Nazi concentration camps in World War II. He wrote his book “Man’s Search for Meaning” using his experience of the death camps, to encourage his readers that life holds meaning under any conditions – even the most miserable ones.

Frankl wrote the book in nine consecutive days and intended it to be published anonymously until convinced otherwise. He had authored dozens of books, but it was this one that has sold over 12 million copies, bringing him world-wide acclaim, success and (no doubt) wealth too.

Frankl later wrote: “Don’t aim at success – the more you aim at it

and make it a target, the more you are going to miss it. For success, like happiness, cannot be pursued…Happiness must happen, and the same holds for success: you have to let it happen by not caring about it…listen to what your conscience commands you to do and go on to carry it out to the best of your knowledge. Then you will live to see that in the long run…success will follow you precisely because you had forgotten to think of it.”

Today aiming for success and happiness is woven into our culture.

But as far back as ancient times those who have discovered success and happiness have, in hindsight, learnt that such things have been the unintended side-effect of one’s dedication to a cause greater than oneself, or to a person with noble vision and higher truth.

Jesus Christ taught such wisdom - that if we focus our lives on Him, his cause, and teaching we would find a higher quality of life and rest for our souls as a bi-product.

Wisdom worth considering in terms of our wellbeing.
