The hammer has officially dropped on the Children’s Cancer Institute’s ‘Build for a Cure’ house in Glenmore Park, selling to a lucky family for $1.795 million. Children’s Cancer Institute’s Head of Fundraising and Marketing, Anne Johnston, said the vital funds raised by the sale of this house will make a huge difference.

Mulgoa Schools To Benefit From Stimulus Projects The next round of schools to benefit from the NSW Government’s $120 million Metro Renewal Program have been announced.

The program has already funded hundreds of projects for metro schools, including upgrades to bathrooms, outdoor learning and play area upgrades and new COLAs, walkways and shade structures.

Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies MP said it is great to see our schools benefiting from the NSW Government’s commitment to creating modern revitalised school facilities.

“I am excited to see more schools benefit from tranche 3 of the renewal program,” Mrs Davies said.

“I know that our schools will benefit from this funding and I look forward to seeing the projects delivered.”

Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell said the Metro Renewal Program is driven by what school communities want and includes work such as upgrades to school playgrounds, sport courts and libraries.

“I’m delighted that more projects will be delivered in this next tranche of the program. All of the projects were put forward by schools, so they are investments that we know the school community wants,” Ms Mitchell said.

“Overall, we will see more than $5 million invested in metro school infrastructure in this third tranche of the program”.

In November 2020, the NSW Government announced the Metro and Regional Renewal Program and to date, over 1,440 projects have been approved at more than 1,200 schools.

The programs are supporting more than 2,600 jobs across regional and metro NSW, and wherever possible, schools will use local contractors and suppliers ensuring the positive impacts of this stimulus are felt as far and wide as possible.

The NSW Government is investing $7.9 billion over the next four years, continuing its program to deliver 215 new and upgraded schools to support communities across NSW. This is the largest investment in public education infrastructure in the history of NSW.

Subscribe to weather alerts, know your evacuation routes and prepare a ‘get ready to go’ kit – these are some of the safety tips NSW emergency service agencies have shared ahead of the 2021 summer season.

NSW SES and Resilience NSW have joined forces to remind locals in the Hawkesbury-Nepean Valley that storm season is upon us, a wet summer is forecast and there is increased risk of flooding across NSW, particularly within

the region.

NSW SES Commissioner Carlene York said the widespread flooding that impacted the region in March demonstrated not only the potential for devastation, but also the importance of preparing for these events.

“It wasn’t that long ago we saw major flooding sweep through this area, impacting thousands of properties,” Commissioner York said.

“There is the very real risk of a similar event happening again, which is why we need communities to know their risks and have a plan now.

“It’s important those in the area know the early signs of potential flooding, are familiar with their key evacuation routes, follow advice of NSW SES, and prepare a ‘get ready to go’ kit ahead of time.

“While you can’t fight floods, you can certainly prepare for them,” she said.

Resilience NSW Executive Director, Operational Management and Partnerships, Dominic Lane, urged locals to use the start of summer to have a conversation with friends and families about being prepared for seasonal emergencies.

“Our emergency service organisations do an incredible job keeping us safe, but they can only do so much. Being aware and prepared is everyone’s responsibility, whether at home, at work or away on holidays,” Mr Lane said.

“Think about the area you’re in and what types of emergencies could affect you and plan now for what you will do in an emergency. Get your home or business ready, connect with NSW emergency services to stay informed and look out for each other,” he said.

NSW SES has teamed up with Resilience NSW and Infrastructure NSW to develop an awareness campaign across the Hawkesbury-Nepean Valley called Floods.

Running for eight weeks from 25 October, the campaign encourages community members to know the early signs of potential flooding and have a plan in place to respond.

New Dine & Discover Vouchers Coming Soon For Penrith Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith welcomed the announcement that Penrith will have more reasons to celebrate catching up with friends and family this summer with two additional Dine & Discover vouchers up for grabs for NSW residents.

Stuart Ayres said the expanded program will support residents across the community and encourage economic activity as part of the government’s economic recovery strategy.

“This is about supporting people to get out and have a meal or spend the day discovering their community while supporting businesses,” Stuart Ayres said.

“The additional $250 million investment by the NSW Government will help businesses recover from months of restrictions and encourage people to enjoy what they love most.

“We experienced the success of the Dine & Discover program when we reopened last time, which is why we are doubling down efforts with an additional two $25 vouchers - one for Dine and one for Discover venues.

“We are backing our businesses and helping hip pockets by expanding the program, in addition to extending existing vouchers until the end of June 2022.”

Stuart Ayres said the vouchers would again be delivered via the ServiceNSW app.

“You’ll find them in your ServiceNSW app in time for summer or you can contact ServiceNSW and they can send them to you,” Stuart Ayres said.

“To date, almost 4.8 million people have taken advantage of the voucher program since its launch in March, giving businesses a $430 million boost.”

NSW residents aged 18 years and over who are yet to apply will be able to do so until the program ends and will receive all six $25 vouchers.

Participating businesses do not need to reapply. Those who want to join the program are encouraged to register, download the scanner app and get ready to redeem.

More information will be made available in the coming weeks on the nsw.gov.au website.

Lighting Up December Nights

Christmas has many special traditions. One of the more popular traditions is visiting the Christmas lights. Whether it’s taking your family to visit the many lights displays or sharing with the community your own creations, Christmas lights are loved by all!

Local Lisa Donnelly knows just how much we enjoy this pastime. So much so that she has recently created the group, Glenmore Park Christmas Lights.

Glenmore Park Christmas Lights is a local group on Facebook, dedicated to sharing the wondrous lights displays we have right here in our very own neighbourhood. Group members have embraced the festive season, with over

500 and counting now aboard.

“I started the group on the 1st November. I was motivated to start the group because my family loves Christmas lights. Every year in the two weeks leading up to Christmas, my family and many others from Glenmore Park drive around each night looking at the amazing lights displays. We didn’t really have one place that was dedicated to posting the locations, making it easier to map out where to go each night” explained Lisa to the Glenmore Gazette.

“Glenmore Park is such a family orientated area. People love to deck their houses out at Christmas time and share it with our community” she continued.

So, what’s the key to a good Christmas lights display you might ask?

“Well, it’s definitely the music, blow up displays and interactive displays for the kids to get involved with or to get up close to touch. Even a house with only a few blow ups and some flashing lights makes everyone happy” she replied.

Lisa would love for the local community to get behind the group and she welcomes everyone.

“Share the group around, so more people can post their houses for people to enjoy. Stay Safe This Snake Season With Summer now upon us, it is also snake season. Snakes are more visible in the warmer weather and can be seen when we’re out and about. Sean Cade of Australian Snake Catchers has shared some tips on how to stay safe during this period.

Sean began his professional reptile removal service business 15 years ago and together with his partner Freya, have successfully removed many venomous and non-venomous snakes.

“Typically, the snake season is Spring and Summer (September to March) each year. However, on warm days they will emerge throughout the year. Snakes don’t hibernate. They experience brumation, which means that they have sporadic bursts of activity” explained Sean.

If you encounter a snake, Sean has this important information for us.

“Snakes are purely defensive creatures by nature. If they are given an opportunity to escape a situation or retreat, they will prefer this option. Snakes will feel threatened by humans that get too close as we are seen as large predators in their view.

“If you encounter a snake, do not approach them. Keep kids and pets away. Back away slowly whilst keeping your eyes on the snake.

Most importantly, do not attempt to catch or kill them. 80 to 90% of people are bitten trying to catch or kill a snake” he said.

There are also steps to take to ensure your home is safe and minimized of encounters.

“Snakes enter premises for food and shelter. Keep rubbish and debris to a minimum and your yard and grass tidy. Don’t put pet water bowls near doorways. Firewood piles should be kept away from the house and on a pallet, if possible. If the snake is in or around your home, call a licensed professional” Sean stated.

There are several species of venomous and non-venomous snakes that can be found in Western Sydney. Venomous includes the Eastern Brown Snake, Death Adder, Red Bellied Black Snake, Yellow Faced Whip Snake, Marsh Snake and Golden Crowned Snake. In cooler climates, you’ll find the Eastern Tiger Snake and Highlands Copperhead. Non-venomous include the Common Tree Snake and Diamond Python.

God made us for relationships. Of course, we need food and shelter, but as human beings’ relationships are at the heart of our existence. Relationships bring us purpose, identity and meaning in life.

Christmas is a time for relationships. A time for families to get together and share food and have fun experiences. For the first time in two years, it seems we are going to have a normal Christmas!

After so much disruption to our lives, it is going to be good to see family and friends and spend time together doing things the way we used to.

God didn’t just make us for relationships with each other, he also

made us for relationships with him. God may feel distant, but he has come close to us in Jesus Christ. I suppose it is right that God feels distant because we have lived lives that don’t deserve relationship with him. However, Jesus comes as our Saviour to bring us back to God. When Jesus was born, the angels declared “Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.

This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger” (Luke 2:11-12).

My prayer is that this Christmas will bring you great joy as you invest in relationships, particularly with God. That is exactly how he made each one of us.

Christmas Announces Good News

The commercial wheels that turn at Christmas time are starting to turn. Before long, at warp speed. Buy or perish. Worry that we haven’t purchased enough or that our gifts won’t be appreciated.

Stress. Heavy on the horn when someone nicks our parking spot. Frenzied hunting for things to purchase to make Christmas, Christmas. Then we flop.

Good times with friends. A party and its trimmings. Which is good.

But the true meaning of Christmas, whether we embrace it or not, is an announcement of good news about something that is of spiritual significance.

Christmas announces the coming of Jesus Christ, a spiritual King, whom the Bible describes as “the Saviour of the world” and “the light of the world”.

He came into the world to rebuild a bridge between God and humanity. The Bible teaches that without a spiritual relationship with God we will, inevitably, struggle to find joy and peace. In the

end, we will be ‘cactus’.

He came to shine his light into the dark aspects of human life, where hatred has triumphed over love, sadness over joy, war over peace, sickness over health, broken relationships over thriving families, and despair over hope.

Few would dispute that our beautiful world is in a bit of a mess.

But the power of the good news of the coming of Jesus Christ is that God hasn’t left us to it. He remains interested in helping us to find healing for the broken bits, light for the dark corners, and hope for our children’s generation.

The Christmas carols and bells aren’t just part of the party, they are calling us to trust Jesus Christ and to allow him to lead our lives to good places.

Without that, Christmas will come and go, leaving us where we were before any of the wheels of the party started turning.

I pray that as Christmas rolls around again, your soul and the landscape of your life will be touched by its good news.

Western Sydney Wildlife Crossing a Wild Success

Western Sydney’s first ever wildlife ladder crossing has proven a huge success, with monitoring cameras revealing dozens of native animals using the structure.

The wildlife ladder was installed by Greater Sydney Local Land Services, Penrith City Council and Mulgoa Landcare above Bluestone Drive at Glenmore Park to connect critters between the adjoining Mulgoa Nature and Surveyors Creek Reserves.

The crossing consists of a rope and cable ‘ladder’ suspended above the road and linking to nearby trees.

Greater Sydney Senior Land Services Officer for Biodiversity Peter Ridgeway said the team had recently installed wildlife monitoring cameras to track activity on the crossing.

“The results were above anything we could have hoped for with 1,364 records of native wildlife using the crossing in the four months between June and September this year, with animals recorded using it almost every single night” he said.

“The most frequent visitors are a local population of Sugar Gliders, who are using the crossing to travel from Surveyors Creek into Mulgoa Nature Reserve.

“Sugar Gliders are uncommon and declining in Western Sydney. The Glenmore Park crossing now safely links the populations between these two reserves and helps protect them.

“To our surprise we also saw a lot of birds using the ladder. While most birds just rested on it as a convenient perch, we also recorded ducks and magpies walking across to get from one side of the road to the other - it’s safer than walking on the ground and helps them conserve energy for flying,” he said.

Mr Ridgeway said Western Sydney’s bushland, the Cumberland Plain Woodland, is among the most fragmented ecosystems in Australia.

“Today, even ‘common’ wildlife species find it hard to survive as roads and suburbs isolate their home, so it’s great to see there is real value in these sorts of initiatives,” he said.

“We’re looking into the feasibility of additional wildlife crossings in the region.

Wildlife ladders only work for lightweight arboreal animals, so we’re considering dry tunnels under roads which larger animals like koalas and ground-dwelling animals like the echidna can use as well.

A raffle will also be held across these days, with the lucky draw of a meat tray from Clean Cut Family Meat Butchers, drawn each week.

We’re accepting items such as wrapping paper, cardboard boxes and other household recyclables.

We’re collecting real Christmas trees for free on Saturday 8 January 2022. Bring your real tree to Jamison Park between 10am and 2pm and we’ll make sure it’s sent to the right place to be turned into mulch to be reused. Please remove all decorations prior to attending the drop-off. Artificial trees will not be accepted. Basketball is back! The much-anticipated Penrith and Districts Basketball Association (PDBA) 2021/22 Summer season has returned, and Glenmore Park Basketball Club are ready for a big year.

Players took to the court on the 5th and 6th November last month and the season will run through until April 2022.

Glenmore Park Basketball Club, which began in October 1998, continues to grow each year. The Summer season will see over 220 registered players suiting up for 24 teams for the local club.

“We are looking forward to giving the kids an opportunity to be back doing what they love and having some fun. After a long break due to COVID, it was wonderful seeing so many smiling faces back on the court” said Kathleen Burke, Club Secretary of Glenmore Park Basketball Club.

The recent success of Australian basketball on the world stage has shown a surge in popularity of the sport. The juniors are striving to be the next Patty Mills or Liz Cambage.

“Australia has had some outstanding results in recent years. There are several high-profile basketballers now playing in the both the NBA and WNBA. The recent Olympic Men’s team winning their first medal was huge for the sport.

“Our club has grown through players having a great time and then bringing a friend or two to join them for the next season. We love being a family club” smiled Kathleen.

For anyone wanting to join, the club still has some vacancies.

“Basketball caters for all levels, from beginners to advanced and the club is run by volunteers. Anyone interested in joining can check out our website or Facebook page or get in touch to find out more. We would also love to see more girls of all ages playing the game” she ended.

Parental Burnout is Real, and we Need to Take it Seriously To feel ‘burnt out’ is to feel over-extended, exhausted, and that you nothing left to give. The feeling of ‘burnout’ is often accompanied by negative thoughts about yourself and people around you. Burning out can look different for different people.

It may look loud and aggressive for some, and quiet and withdrawn for others. Regardless of how it presents, burnout is a serious problem for modern parents.

The term‘burnout’was first coined to describe an occupational hazard for certain professionals such as social workers, nurses, and therapists. It was thought that the stress of constantly attending to others in need can lead to a state of fatigue and cynicism. In recent years, researchers have examined how burnout can happen in other contexts. Parenting is broadly considered one of the hardest jobs there is! And, unfortunately, parents around the world are reporting increasing symptoms of burnout.

Parents who are burning out often feel they are ineffective or poor in their parenting role. This can relate to unrealistic expectations of parenting. Social media can be a source of distress for some parents when they perceive that everyone else seems to raise their children with no trouble at all. Parental burnout can also make it difficult to see your child in a positive light. There can be resentment or a feeling of emotional distancing that threatens the quality of the parent-child relationship if not addressed.

It is important to know that if you are struggling in your parenting duties, you are not alone. Burnout is most often reported by parents of newborns, and at other points of significant change or transition in the parenting journey. It helps to ask other family members or friends to give you some practical or emotional relief during these times. Santa and Firies to Spread Christmas Cheer

It’s that time of year again! Santa is making a comeback after some time off not being able to travel with the novel COVID-19.

Regentville RFB firefighters have been busy in meetings with Santa to ensure that they can get him out and about in our local community to see all the good boys and girls in a COVID Safe manner. They are so excited to say that he is coming! Santa will be making his rounds through December in the locations of Emu Heights, Glenmore Park, Leonay and Regentville.

Due to popular success (and so others don’t miss out), Santa will also be doing a day at their very own station where you can come down and get a photo with him in front of one of their big red fire trucks, that he calls a sleigh!

All dates are yet to be confirmed so be sure to follow NSW RFS - Regentville Brigade on Facebook to make sure you know when your visit is happening, including live updates on where he is during his visits.

Could Migraines be Genetic?

12% of people live with migraine, 88% do not. Why? Is it their genes? Is it their lifestyle? Research shows both genes and lifestyle (non-shared environment) contribute significantly to their risk of getting migraines.

Using identical-twin studies, researchers found when one twin gets migraines and the second doesn’t, genes contribute (30–60%), and non-shared-environment about 35–55% to the risk of migraine. The genetic component is called ‘heritability’.

Importantly, a heritability figure provides absolutely no measure of how sensitive any trait (including migraine) is to changes in environment. So even if a trait such as migraine were 100% heritable, whether the trait is expressed, i.e., whether someone gets migraines, may still depend completely on the environment in which the person lives.

‘Concordance’ describes the likelihood of two people with shared genes developing the same disorder. Research looking at 1,300 twins found that: 1. Migraine concordance rates were:

a. 26% for identical twins –they have identical genes b. 13% for non-identical twins – they share 50% the same genes

c. similar for male and female twin sets 2. For identical twins, the chance of another family member having migraines was:

a. 31% if neither twin had migraines

b. 45% if one had migraines

c. 60% if both twins had migraines

Study authors concluded the influence of genes on risk of getting migraines was much lower than previously thought.

Put another way, when one identical twin has migraines, the other twin doesn’t 74% of the time. When a non-identical twin has migraines, the other twin doesn’t 87% of the time.

This research seems clear. Since identical twins have identical genes, the only factor differentiating a twin with migraine from a twin without, is environment/lifestyle differences. These encompass diet, sleep-sufficiency and quality, good-stress but not bad-stress, good levels of sunshine and vitamin D, appropriate exercise, good relationships, etc. All of these are within a migraineurs control. The very hopeful message here is that even if your genetics are 100% the same, you don’t have to get migraines. Genes don’t decide your fate.

Santa Photos With Your Pets Santa Claus will be visiting Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital during December 2021 to take photos with your pets.

Santa will be here from Wednesday 1st December until Friday 24th December 2021, Mon-Fri (9am-6pm) and on Saturdays (9am-2pm).

Due to the Coronavirus crisis, Santa will be wearing a mask underneath his beard. We usually have a staff member taking the photograph of your pet with Santa, however to minimize the number of people in the room, we will require you to take your own photograph using your phone/camera, or with our camera where we can print off the photo for you. Only 1 client per pet will be allowed in the room at one time. Santa will be photographed with pets only.

For a $10 cash donation, your Santa photo is presented in a Christmas card, with all proceeds donated to the Guide Dogs NSW. We have Christmas themed props for your pet’s photos (e.g. hats and scarves), feel free to bring in your own outfits.
