Let the Christmas Games Begin Christmas is a special time of year where families come together to celebrate the festive season with one another. Whether it’s a picnic, barbecue or listening to carols, it’s a chance to make memories with our loved ones. For the Bedwell family of Glenmore Park, it’s a time to put on the white, green or red, flex their competitive muscles and compete in the Christmas Family Olympics.

The local event began just four years ago. Seven families come together to compete in events such as the Santa Sack Race, Reindeer Pass, Snowball Fight, Wreath Toss and Christmas Bauble Mini Golf.

The families are split into three teams (White, Green and Red) where they compete for a trophy and importantly bragging rights. Last year’s event saw 33 ‘athletes’ consisting of kids and adults vying for glory.

“The creativity in the Christmas themed events from each family, watching them work together and the laughter, cheating and cheering across all teams is amazing. Enjoying the presence of friends instead of presents. There is so much to enjoy” said Mel Bedwell.

For the record, the green team have been the most successful team so far. Mel, husband Shane and children Annabelle and Levi hope to change that this year with ‘team white’ eyeing off the silverware.

Emilia Wins 2018 NSW Premier’s Spelling Bee

Etymology, irredeemable, and enthusiasm were just a few of the words Emilia McCarthy, aged nine, successfully spelled at the 2018 NSW Premier’s Spelling Bee securing her win in the junior division.

Emilia McCarthy, a year four student from Glenmore Park Public School, was among 100 junior and senior finalists from across the state that went letter-to-letter at the Premier’s Spelling Bee last month.

Over 170,000 years 3 to years 6 students from almost 1,000 public schools across NSW took part in the Premier’s Spelling Bee. Glenmore Park Public School was one of only nine schools in the state to have finalists in both the senior and junior completion.

Fatimah Abid, in year five, represented the school in the senior division.

Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies visited Glenmore Park Public School to congratulate Emilia McCarthy and Fatimah Abid on their success.

“This is a marvellous achievement for both Emilia and Fatimah.

To be among the best spellers of the state requires hard work and a passion for learning” Tanya Davies said.

“I congratulate Emilia on this extraordinary achievement of being crowned the best junior speller in NSW”.

Principal of Glenmore Park Public School, Natalie Mansour expressed her elation over the success of the Glenmore Park Public School students.

“We are all so proud of Emilia. Making it to the finals is fantastic but winning…is out of this world!” Natalie Mansour said.

Junior division winner Emilia McCarthy likes arts and science, as well as learning about history. When she leaves school, she would like to be an engineer.

The Premier’s Spelling Bee was introduced as a fun and educational way for primary school students to engage in spelling.

Each year the Bee has grown in popularity, with an additional 20,000 students taking place this year.

It’s for Real!

The young boy patiently listened as his Scripture Teacher explained the Christmas Story.

When the teacher had finished, the boy put up his hand to ask the question that had been troubling him, “But sir, how do you know it’s true? How do you know this Jesus stuff isn’t a fairy tale? Like Santa? Like the tooth fairy?”

Good question!

Many adults have grown up thinking the Jesus story is just that, a story. They think there’s as much truth about the events surrounding Jesus’ birth, life, death and resurrection as there is about the Easter Bunny!

So how can you know it’s true? And more importantly, what’s the significance of a baby born 2000 years ago?

The Bible helpfully answers these questions. Consider Luke’s New Testament account of Jesus. Luke begins by telling us how he put it together; having carefully investigated the facts, Luke wrote an orderly account based on eyewitnesses. Therefore, we can be confident, this is no fairy tale! It’s for real!

As for “Why Jesus was born,” Luke tells us what the angel said as it announced Jesus’ birth to a surprised group of shepherds; “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.”

The Beginner’s Guide to Christmas Christmas celebrates the birthday of Jesus Christ. Yep, that’s right. It’s not actually about giving gifts to each other, roast turkey, or even brandy custard. What?! It’s okay, I’m not voting to get rid of such things, just clarifying what is what with this celebration.

Christmas celebrates the birth of someone born just over 2000 years ago named Jesus Christ. “Jesus” was a common name like John or Bill. “Christ” points to something special about him as taught in the Bible – that he was sent by God to forgive our sins, heal our lives, and make possible an eternal life with God after we die physically. If what the Bible says is true (as I believe), the birth of Jesus addresses key questions like: “What happens to us when we die?” and “What is God like?”

Now, the Bible teaches that Jesus had to come to earth and be born as a man so that he could deal with the sins of humanity by dying on a cross. This means that the guilt and shame for the worst of sins can be forgiven because Jesus has paid the price for them. Jesus then rose from the dead, defeating death itself and he shares his victory with anyone who believes in him. This means that death is not the end of the line but a transition to a life with God forever.

This is way beyond brandy custard! And for this reason, when Jesus was born in the first century there were angels singing and wise men bowing down to the baby Jesus and worshipping him like a special King. If you think about it, we sing about all of this in our Christmas carols, for example: “Hark the herald angels sing…” and “We three kings of orient are, bearing gifts…”.

Roast turkey and brandy custard are awesome and fun when all is good. But when we face the real stuff and questions of life Jesus is the answer, and he is open to all who reach out to him.

Have a great Christmas filled with inner rest and happiness.

It is an ongoing and more common thing happening.

Christmas for Penrith Salvation Army Penrith Salvation Army is excited to kick off its Christmas week of giving with a free afternoon of games, rides, colouringin competition, petting zoo and lots of free prizes.

This will take place from 4:00pm to 6:00pm then continuing with Carols from 6:30pm to 7:30pm, making it a nice early night for everyone.

Enjoy a free sausage sizzle while the kids try their skill on one of the free games or go for a bounce on the jumping castles.

During the week following, The Salvation Army will begin its Christmas hamper and toy gifting, where this year they expect to hand out in excess of ten thousand toys to local families.

They would like to thank in advance all those who can assist this Christmas by giving donations of food, toys and money which make all this possible. All are welcome to their Christmas Morning Service, which starts at 9:00am on Tuesday 25th December. If you wish to try and sleep in on Christmas Day, then their regular Sunday Morning Services are always available with a 10:00am start or their afternoon Inter-denominational service at 5:00pm.

The First Christmas Tree With Christmas almost here, you may notice the wide range of red and green decorations filling up the shelves in your local supermarket, crowds of people rushing through stores in search of the perfect stocking filler and not to forget the blissful setting up of the Christmas tree.

Have you ever stopped for a moment and wondered when and where this jolly Christmas tradition started?

How has it managed to imprint itself so finely in the heart and soul of Christmas? There is no doubt that to many it would be unthinkable to celebrate the festive season without the family all coming together to share the experience of decorating the Christmas tree.

It’s suggested that out of all the many traditions celebrated during this time, the Christmas tree has one of the most significant and interesting origins. Primarily, it is believed that the first Christmas tree goes way back to the 16th century in Eastern Germany, where a small group of townspeople decorated evergreens with paper roses, sweet fruits such as apples, tinsel and a big variety of ornaments that continue to be used today such as baubles, candy canes and the symbolic angel or star that is placed on the top of the tree to represent Christianity.

The tradition only became significantly popular around the mid-19th century, when the upper middle-class families began to follow the footsteps of Queen Victoria, who embraced the decorating of an evergreen each Christmas. Since then, the tradition has spread worldwide, with millions of trees being produced each year and most importantly, millions of families worldwide all coming together to share the Christmas spirit.

Lachy Brings Home the Gold

Surveyors Creek Public School student Lachlan Green recently won a gold medal in discus, representing Sydney Metropolitan West at the NSW PSSA School Championships which were held at Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre. The local athlete threw 37.04 metres, beating his competition personal best by 4.01 metres and crowning him the best 11-year-old boy in the state in discus in the NSW PSSA School’s competition.

Lachlan, who also competes weekly for Emu Plains Little Athletics Centre, trains twice a week for discus. He started little A’s at the age of 7, focussing on his running events. “In the Under 9’s, I started throwing further than the other kids. I was put into the state relay competition, so I thought I would give it a go. My Mum noticed I had potential and started taking me down to the fields to practice” said Lachlan.

Soon after, Lachlan qualified for the Regional Championships. One of the officials at the event noticed his feet were around the wrong way when throwing and Lachlan’s parents enlisted Rhys, a local coach to guide him. He went on to finish 16th in the state that year and was determined to work hard and improve.

In a devastating blow for the young athlete, after qualifying for the National Championships due to his first placing, Lachlan has had to withdraw due to an elbow injury. The injury could see him miss the whole athletics season. “My goal is to make the Nationals next year and to come first. I really want to beat the Queenslanders” he explained.

‘Lachy’ is hoping to come back bigger and better after his rehabilitation. For now, he has time to watch his other favourite sports, rugby league and soccer, and to cheer on his favourite athlete, Eden Hazard who plays for Chelsea in the Premier League.

“You just have to practice, believe in yourself and listen to your coach. Sometimes you have to give up things like going to Panther games or parties because it’s the same time as training, which I am ok with” he ended.

Tired kids wrapping up a year of school. Lots of parties, performances, concerts, awards ceremonies, etc.

Tired parents wrapping up a year of work. Lots of parties and taking kids to all of the above mentioned frivolities.

And shopping. In the heat of Summer.

Why is there no peace and goodwill in the lead-up to Christmas? This is the time of year where the familiar refrain of “if you don’t be good, Santa won’t come” is heard.

This is an empty threat, and kids know it. The parent is not being consistent, immediate, or decisive. And it’s completely and utterly ineffective. It does not focus on desirable behaviour, and it does not teach your child new skills and behaviours.

So, what should we do instead? Have a well thought out plan, and communicate it to the kids. Communicate your expectations in advance.

Tell the kids the who, what, where, when, why, and how of the particular event. Make sure that you are not going out when it is usually the child’s naptime, or when s/he is hungry. Take a bag of snacks and anything else you might need.

Communicate the ground rules. Things like ‘hold my hand in the car park’, ‘stay close to the trolley’. Note that these rules are worded in the positive. Tell the kids what you want them to do instead of what you don’t want them to do.

Organise some engaging activities for when there is some waiting time. For example, a Where’s Wally book, some pipe cleaners, a Rubik’s cube, colouring in.

Communicate the rewards that the children will receive for desirable behaviour – descriptive praise (immediate!), a trip to the park, an extra story at bedtime. And communicate the consequences if they do not comply – reminder of the rules, logical consequence, quiet time, time out (yes, you can do time out when out), loss of reward.

At the end of the event, sit down with the kids and talk about what went well, and what you could do differently next time.

I know of a Mum who took her four kids (one was a baby) camping, for a week, by herself, using the above Planning Ahead strategy. What a champion.

Like all good plans, you have to be consistent and stick to it.

Getting Ready for Kindergarten Starting Kindergarten is an exciting milestone in every child’s life. As parents, it is normal to feel a little apprehensive about what challenges lie ahead. You might be unsure of routines and how your child might adjust. Is my child ready? What happens if my child has trouble making friends? How can I help support my child’s learning at home? Will my child manage being away from me for an entire day? All these concerns are normal and valid when going through this experience for the first time. It is important to remember that no matter what, your child will feel safe, secure and supported if the home-school partnership is strong and if they are given the chance to adequately prepare for the transition to school.

All schools have a transition or orientation programs to introduce your child (and yourself ) to school life. These programs vary from school to school and as each family is different, the program may or may not address all the concerns you may have. To put your mind at ease, we have put together a list of activities you can do in the months leading up to starting school to equip your child with the basics of going to ‘big’ school.

1. Trace name, shapes and letters of the alphabet.

2. Sit and listen to a picture book, answering oral questions about the story.

3. Use scissors to cut straight, wavy and zigzag lines.

4. Colour in pictures and draw.

5. Practice opening packets and containers for lunch and eating from a lunchbox.

6. Learn bathroom skills like locking and unlocking cubicle doors and washing and drying hands.

7. Have some playdates with other children starting Kindergarten (at the same school if possible).

Local Young Achiever Nominated Natalie Bishara from Glenmore Park has been nominated for the Freemasons of NSW/ACT Community Service Award in the 2019 Seven News Young Achiever Awards. The Seven News Young Achiever Awards acknowledge, encourage and most importantly promote the positive achievements of all young people in NSW and the ACT, up to and including the age of 29.

Nominations were sought in the following categories: • First National Real Estate Leadership Award • Aboriginal Education Council Aboriginal Education Award • Western Sydney University Academic Achievement Award • Western Sydney University Science and Technology Award • NSW Department of Education Early Childhood Educator Award • Scouts NSW/ACT Youth Development Award • NSW Department of Finance, Services and Innovation – Innovation Award • Freemasons of NSW/ACT Community Service Award • NSW Deputy Premier’s Regional Achiever Award Judging will take place on Wednesday 12th December 2018.

Finalists will be presented, and winners announced at an Awards Gala Presentation Dinner on Friday 1st March 2019.

Category winners will each receive $1,000 cash and a $1,000 Bartercard account plus a trophy. Every nominee will receive a certificate of achievement. The NSW/ACT Young Achiever of the Year will receive $2,000 and a trophy.

Upgrades to Grassroots Facilities Completed

Liberal Senator for Western Sydney, Senator the Hon Marise Payne, recently announced the successful completion of upgrades to key sporting facilities in Lindsay following over $1 million in funding being provided for the projects by the LiberalNational Government.

The funding was delivered under the Australian Government’s Community Development Grant Program, a landmark scheme designed to support the upgrading of key infrastructure projects to promote economic growth and enhance liveability.

Funding locally included $120,000 for the upgrade to the canteen at Ched Towns Rugby League Fields, including the installation of two 25-metre light poles with new LED lighting.

Liberal Senator for Western Sydney, Senator the Hon Marise Payne, who officially marked the completion of the projects at Jamison Park, said the Liberal-National Government had made a significant investment in grassroots sport in Penrith.

“As the Liberal Senator for Western Sydney, but also as a local resident, I know that the Penrith region is home to some of the most passionate and talented sports people in New South Wales” Senator Payne said.

“The completion of these upgrades means that local sporting teams and athletes have the modern facilities they need to get active, keep healthy and have fun.

“The successful delivery of this funding is further proof that the Liberal-National government’s plan for a stronger economy is working, and has help bring the Penrith community together in support of grassroots sport”.

Gazette Cadet – Georgia’s Journey There’s nothing quite as exciting as having the opportunity to learn about something you are passionate about. I was recently given the opportunity to carry out my year 10 work experience at the District Gazette. I can still remember the moment I found out I would be doing work experience there. It was followed by an obnoxiously loud squeal of utter excitement that my parents swore the whole street would have heard!

Being a passionate writer who has wanted to publish a book since the age of 8, I found that learning about the media and journalism in our local community to be inspiring and very interesting. As a teenager, I have always relied on my writing to voice many things I am unable to speak. Writing has always held significance in my life, as it felt like an escape.

What an amazing week it was. I was welcomed by a warm and friendly team, all of whom shared a laugh (and a sigh) as we worked tirelessly towards the December deadlines. As we worked together towards the last paper of the year, I was given exciting tasks like assisting with social media updates, artwork designing and of course writing stories (including this one!) Learning about how the District Gazette runs and the busy nature of the paper at deadline time was a thrilling experience.

It has been an eye opening and life changing experience that I will cherish. The District Gazette has been the ideal place of work experience for me and I would recommend this to any student wishing to pursue a career in the media or even for those who love writing. Preparation 1. Preheat oven to 180C or 160C fan-forced. Cut out 6 squares of non-stick baking paper each about 22cm square. Stand 6 empty, clean cans on a baking tray and place a waffle cone, pointy end down in each. Place baking paper square onto each cone and gently push in until the paper lines the cone; staple in place to hold shape. Trim off excess paper at the top. Line 6 holes of a medium-sized muffin pan with paper cases.

2. Make up cake mixture with butter, eggs and water according to packet directions. Carefully spoon half the mixture into the paper-lined cones (the weight of the batter will hold the paper down and seal the pointed end). Try to stand the cones as upright as possible though they will lean slightly.

Bake for 35 mins until cakes are firm when gently touched.

3. Remove cones from tins and lay on a wire rack to cool for 5 mins. Carefully break cones to release cakes. Peel away paper, cool completely. Meanwhile bake remaining batter in prepared muffin tins for 20 mins or until they spring back to a gentle touch. Cool completely.

4. To assemble, cut the rounded ends from the cone-shaped cakes so that they sit flat. Cut off and discard the domed tops of the cupcakes so they have a flat surface. Working on one at a time use a small teaspoon to drizzle melted chocolate onto the point of the cone-shaped cakes, letting it run down the sides. Before the chocolate sets, sprinkle with rainbow choc chips (or chosen decoration).

5. Spread a cupcake with chocolate and place cone-shaped cake on top. Sprinkle rainbow choc chips around the edge.

Repeat with remaining cakes, chocolate and rainbow choc chips. Leave to set.

Anti-Inflammatories – Should I Take Them Before I Play Endurance Sports?

Participation in endurance sports, such as fun runs and half & full marathons is growing worldwide. Sports such as soccer, rugby league/union, AFL, hockey, etc might also be classed as endurance sports. Many people engage in these sports without adequate training or medical information or experience. Many try to overcome pain during and after sports by taking over the counter analgesics. Should participants in these activities take analgesics prior to the events?

An article published in the peer-reviewed open access medical journal ‘BMJ Open’ in 2013, takes a look at this issue & makes for interesting reading.

The authors were interested in this subject since ‘previous studies have shown that the use and abuse of analgesics in sports is frequent and possibly dangerous, and that the incidence and severity of electrolyte disturbances, gastrointestinal and renal adverse events during and after racing double after taking analgesics’.

The study looked at 3913 of 7048 participants in the Bonn marathon (Germany) in 2010. Participants returned questionnaires, which gave researchers details of: 1. the intensity of pre-race analgesic consumption by participants 2. the incidence of adverse events in analgesic users compared to non-users.

So, what did this study find?

1.

With respect to race withdrawal a. There was no significant difference in premature race withdrawal for people taking or not taking analgesics b. withdrawal due to muscle cramps was rare, but significantly more frequent in people not taking analgesics 2.

With respect to overall adverse events a. The analgesics cohort had an almost 5 times higher incidence of adverse events (overall risk difference of 13%). b. Adverse events increased significantly with increasing analgesic dose. c. Race withdrawal because of gastrointestinal adverse events was significantly more frequent in participants taking analgesics. d. Nine respondents reported temporary hospital admittance: i. 3 for temporary kidney failure (post-ibuprofen ingestion), ii. 4 with bleeds (post-aspirin ingestion) and

iii. 2 cardiac infarctions (post-aspirin ingestion). e. The people who took no analgesics reported no hospital admittance 3.

The above adverse effects were significant at normal ‘over the counter’ doses, The study pinpoints the ‘unexpected risk of the prophylactic use of these drugs in sports’, with no apparent benefit for the users. The authors concluded that the ‘use of analgesics before participating in endurance sports may cause many potentially serious, unwanted adverse events that increase with increasing analgesic dose’ and that ‘analgesic use before endurance sports appears to pose an as yet unrecognised medical problem’.

The analgesics above are of course all non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs that block prostaglandin production. As you now know, prostaglandins don’t just mediate pain. They also maintain good blood flow in compromised tissues and aid repair of damaged tissues, likely a key reason why incidence of organ damage was five times more frequent in participants using analgesics.

This article is not meant to scare people off taking medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatories when these are indicated. However, for participants in endurance events it may be important to realise that taking such medications prophylactically prior to an event may have unintended medical consequences, with little or no benefit for the athlete at race end.

We are Relocating to Bigger Premises We will be relocating to bigger premises in the next few months.

We will be located on the same road as we are currently on, Wentworth Road, but just further down the road.

The new premises have been renovated to accommodate a veterinary hospital. The premises are huge! There are double brick walls, 3m high ceilings and a green bull nosed verandah around the front of the building. We will even have a concrete driveway and carpark! There will still be an off leash park in the front yard for you and your dogs to enjoy.

Camille purchased the veterinary hospital business nearly 9 years ago and there has been steady and continual growth of the business in this time.

We started off with 4 staff and have grown to 15 staff members. We have definitely outgrown the current premises!

We are unsure of the date of the relocation at this time, as there is still some work to be completed and all the tradesmen go on holiday over the New Year. We will let you know as soon as we know.

THE LAST WORD As another year draws to a close, many of us find ourselves reflecting on the good, the bad and the highlights of the past year.

Almost all of us look forward to clocking off for another year, and putting together a list of resolutions or goals to work toward for the New Year.

I am a big believer in setting goals so that you have something to focus on and strive to achieve. I help my children to do the same, so they too hold some accountability in setting themselves some new heights.
