Rohan’s Birthday to Remember There’s no doubt that lockdown changes the way we live our lives.

Milestones, like birthdays are done a little different at home without the celebration of family and friends with us. For Glenmore Park Mum, Sarah Sydir, a simple idea to make her son Rohan’s 18th birthday a memorable one would result in an amazing show of community support.

“Rohan turned 18 on the 6th of July. He isn’t much of a party guy and he doesn’t have a huge social group, but he was very excited to have a family pizza party. When the lockdown was first announced, it was clear that wasn’t going to happen” explained Sarah.

“I had seen a few things on social media about people driving past to beep happy birthday and I thought I would put that out there to our friends and family. Unfortunately, most are out of the area and did not have a reason to be in Glenmore Park for essential services or travel. I didn’t want anyone getting into trouble or being here unnecessarily.

I took a chance and made one little post on our local community Facebook group. I was absolutely blown away by the support for Rohan” Sarah announced.

What came next was incredible! Local residents drove past the Sydir family’s home waving and relaying their best wishes to Rohan for his birthday, as he looked on. They also passed on their birthday wishes on social media.

“For Rohan, this was the best way to celebrate. He loved watching the cars and people drive by. He said it was ‘the best birthday ever’” she said.

“As a mum of a child with a disability, we often worry about how much our young person is missing out on. I worry about him being isolated or misunderstood. Words cannot express what everyone coming out like that meant to us as a family. My husband and I are still crying. His 3 sisters are just so proud” Sarah continued.

The Sydir family wished to thank everyone that helped to make Rohan’s birthday a special one.

Natasha’s New Chapter

Glenmore Park’s Natasha Duarte has just released a new EP, titled Free Bird. The release also heralds in a new chapter for Duarte as an independent musician.

Free Bird, which is available on digital music platforms now including Spotify, YouTube Music, Deezer, Apple Music and Amazon Prime, was recently recorded in the Blue Mountains.

“I recorded this EP with my good friend Murray Sheridan at his studio in Woodford, called Studio 85, and this was the same for my previous album ‘Live It Right’. I always really enjoy working with Murray and we make a good creative team” explained Natasha to the Glenmore Gazette.

“The way it has been different though, is the fact that this is my first EP since I was 15, that is entirely my own. It is not connected to any record labels, managers or agents and it has been something that I could create as I wanted it. It was rewarding writing and recording without any boundaries and I’m proud of what has come from it” she continued.

Natasha describes the theme of Free Bird as being varied in both topic and theme.

“I would say that the main idea behind the EP was organic, raw songs with a folk spirit. All the instruments are live and real, and I think this approach suits it as they are all singer/ songwriter songs” Natasha reflected.

Despite the recent lockdowns for Greater Sydney, she remains positive about her musical plans for the year ahead, “I plan to continue performing and do supports and this is something I hope to do a bit more of this year. Getting the music out there on online platforms is great. I am always writing up songs, jotting down ideas as they come to me.

Hopefully, that will eventuate into more original music being recorded”.

“As simple as it sounds, we are living in a technology focused world, so any kind of social media share, comment or like is extremely helpful at getting local musicians known and best of all it is free. Streaming or downloading their music is a wonderful way of supporting musicians. Attending shows when they are back up and running creates demand for live music too” ended Natasha. r

Local mum Alicia Hollier could never have predicted that an idea whilst visiting a craft fair a few short years ago would one day become a successful business, Lishy’s Vinyl Creations.

“My journey began just over three years ago, when I created my business called Lishy’s Vinyl Creations. Whilst attending a craft fair, I stumbled upon a machine that took my interest. I started thinking about what I could make with this for my own children,” said Alicia.

Having already started a chocolate bouquet business, Lishy’s Lolly Creations, Alicia has always had an interest in craft. She soon completed courses and was making personalised vinyl items for her children and friends. Before too long, she started getting requests and the business was born.

“I love to personalise items with vinyl. Clothing such as shirts and jackets, mugs, wedding items and all sorts of things. I also keep a range of items that people can purchase from me to have whatever they choose written on it. A special message on a mug or something personal for a loved one is always a wonderful gift” Alicia beamed.

“Since upgrading all my equipment, I can sublimate items with photos. This means that mugs with printed designs are even dishwasher safe. I now use high quality machinery and presses which create a professional job” she said.

Is Your Child Highly Sensitive?

Is your child easily overwhelmed? Does your youngster find life changes particularly challenging? Would you describe your son or daughter as “shy” or “cautious”? Is he or she sensitive to bright lights or loud noises?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then you may have a highly sensitive child.

Some children are born more sensitive than others. We don’t know why but researchers think it could be linked to individual differences in the brain and sensory processing system. Highly sensitive children are very “tuned in” to what they can hear, see, smell, taste, or touch. They also tend to experience emotions at a more intense level and for longer periods of time. High sensitivity is a personality trait that researchers estimate affects between 12 – 15% of the general population.

While being highly sensitive can create difficulties in life, these types of children can do well with a little extra TLC and understanding from their caregivers. Highly sensitive kids have many gifts to share with the world, including creativity, compassion, innovative problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and an extraordinary aptitude for deep thinking and reflection.

You help your highly sensitive child shine by following some of these tips: 1. Support them to see their sensitivity in a positive light.

2. Convey confidence that they are strong enough to deal with what is ahead.

3. Provide opportunities for creative expression such as art making or writing.

4. Support them to move outside their comfort zone in small, manageable steps.

5. Expect them to take a little longer to adjust to changes in their life.

6. Help them use their sensory system as a tool for calm by identifying soothing things they can see, hear, touch, and feel when they are distressed. Examples may include white noise, soft blankets or toys, or images of nature.

Scholarship Awarded to Alum of Caroline Chisholm College Caroline Chisholm College alum Kaitlyn Horne has been awarded one of the highly esteemed ICMS Professional Scholarship 2021. The International College of Management, Sydney (ICMS) awarded almost $2 million worth of scholarships to over 130 recipients during 2020 and almost 100 scholarships so far this year. ICMS, located on Northern Beaches, awards more scholarships per capita of student cohort than most other providers.

ICMS Scholarships Chair Ann Whitelock, who is also the wife of ICMS Founder and Chair Darryl CourtneyO’Connor, says the couple have “always shared a passion for recognising hard work, making education accessible, and giving back”. She added that her program “was predicated on these principles over eleven years ago and underpins a key pillar of the college’s strategic values”.

The program has an unwavering system and process which prioritises both objectivity and inclusiveness. Applicants submit a written essay, academic transcripts and an array of relevant documents which highlight leadership roles, community contributions, certificates, and high school achievements. Successful students then progress to the panel interview rounds. “At this point, it becomes a highly competitive field of candidates,” added Whitelock.

While continuing to respond to Covid-19, and manage intermittent lockdowns, the priority is on face-to-face teaching and on-campus learning and living at ICMS campuses, while providing quality online learning.

“We recognise the challenges and difficulties facing students. We have been delighted to see students here at the ICMS campuses. Most of them have completed their final school year in 2020, the most challenging time. Many have moved out of home for the first time. We make sure they settle in smoothly and get to know others,” Whitelock said.

The Scholarship Ceremony is a highlight on the college calendar where recipients are presented with their formal scholarship award, and many are provided with the opportunity of public speaking to share their scholarship stories.

Local Hero Calls It A Day Regentville Fire and Rescue NSW Station Commander “A” Platoon Philip Nightingale has retired, after a distinguished career as a fire fighter that began in 1989, which included 16 years spent at Regentville.

“I joined the job in May 1989 at Alexandria College. I was 34 years old and was looking for something different. I knew some boys in the job and thought, this is for me” said Mr Nightingale to the Glenmore Gazette.

Mr Nightingale’s son Paul also followed in his father’s footsteps to become a fire fighter.

“My son Paul joined the job about 3 and a half years ago and loves it as much as I do” he smiled.

He started his career at #1 Fire and Rescue NSW HQ “B” Platoon in Sydney and was there for 4 years, of which 2 were as Salvage Man. Throughout the years, Mr Nightingale would move to #77 Station St Marys and #86 Station Penrith. He moved to #102 Station in Regentville after it was built in March 2000, where he stayed until completing his Station Officer exams in June 2006.

A transfer to #97 Station Huntingwood and #101 Station Bonnyrigg Heights would follow in later years, before a return to #102 Station Regentville “A” Platoon as a Permanent ‘Rescue’ Station Officer in 2011.

“I have lived in the Penrith District for 62 Years and have seen a lot of residential growth. The CBD has expanded threefold in that time and now that the airport is close, I wonder when the expansion will stop growing” recalled Mr Nightingale.

Reflecting on his career, that has spanned over 30 years, he has many favourite memories.

“My favourite memories are numerous, and you could write a book about the job, however you would have to change the names to protect the innocent. There was a time as a probationary fire fighter that I was called to a building alight in the city. I was on a line of 38mm hose and sent into a large room that was alight. I could see the orange glow of the beast and I was getting closer and closer. I thought, how good is this! That was until I got to a window and looked out to see the orange street lights outside. I was a little bit deflated” he reflected.

What words of advice does Mr Nightingale have for anyone wanting to start a career as a fire fighter?

“Do it. Treat the job well and you will get a lot of satisfaction out of it. A great age to start is about 26-27 years of age, that way you have some life experiences”.

Blood Zinc Level - Is it Really a Good Measure of Zinc Deficiency?

A nutrition patient attended our clinic recently with numerous symptoms. This included reflux, oesophageal inflammation and mucus accumulations, chronic sore mouth and throat, taste and voice changes, difficulty breathing, dry eyes, continual anxiety and agitation, mild depression, inability to exercise, severe insomnia and daytime fatigue, low lymphocytes, dry-eye, and significant weight-loss. Medical investigations had been unable to determine any cause.

The patient admitted to having a strict vegan diet for some years, in an attempt to improve previously diabetic blood sugar levels.

Veganism, however, significantly increases risk of zinc deficiency.

Even so, research shows that 66-90% adults today have inadequate zinc intake with wide-ranging health effects.

Many of the symptoms exhibited by this patient are associated with inadequate systemic zinc yet blood-serum-zinc levels were normal. Could this patient have a normal serum zinc but still have zinc deficiency?

Reduced or altered taste sensation is an indicator zinc deficiency.

In 2004, researchers divided patients with taste impairments into two groups based on whether their blood-serum-zinc levels were normal or low. They compared them to volunteers with normal

taste-sensation, additionally using an alternative test (the ‘apoACE/holo-ACE’ ratio) to determine zinc sufficiency/deficiency of all participants.

In a further study, all patients with taste-sensation changes were then given zinc supplements. All patients had significant improvements in taste-sensation and this improvement correlated with improved ACE ratio, but not with blood-serum zinc levels.

Researchers concluded that ‘zinc deficiency is a predominant factor underlying taste impairment and ACE ratio may be a more sensitive indicator of zinc nutrition than blood-serum-zinc concentration’. In short, serum-zinc-level which is the main test currently used in clinical practice is a poor tool for determining zinc deficiency.

With the approval of the patient’s general practitioner, the patient’s dietary pattern was changed to one that provided excellent levels of all important nutrients (including zinc). They were given some supplements to help correct key nutrient deficits quickly, and symptoms resolved over the next 3 months. Faceless People It struck me at the shops recently that wearing masks can make us feel like faceless people.

It all feels awkward, so we look straight past people to the Peanut Butter.

Live and let live (but I will fight you for the toilet paper if I need to). I felt a strange sense of loneliness, as if the world got smaller, until I came across an old fellow in the chocolate aisle. He looked at me with intention and spoke to me through the kindness in his eyes. They danced like the sparkling sea on a warm day.

It reminded me that we still have faces. That behind our masks (either COVID ones or masks that hide our true situation) there are lives that ALWAYS need help in some way. And there are lives that have life to give away.

I was challenged about whether I normally (not in COVID lockdown) treated people as if they were faceless. Am I at times so consumed with my thing that I look straight past people when

their eyes are crying for help or friendship? How can I be an instrument of God’s love?

The quality of our relationships depends in some way on us NOT seeing each other as faceless people. Instead, to appreciate that behind the masks (the COVID ones and other ones) we all have fears, responsibilities, dreams, strengths, and weaknesses. We all need help from others and from God amidst it all.

The same is true for our life together in Glenmore Park.

When Jesus taught that we should love one another, he was saying, “Don’t treat your wife, your kid, or your neighbour as a faceless person but instead care about each other’s wellbeing”.

In time, the COVID masks will go. And if we seek to live well the challenge will be whether we can stop seeing others as faceless people, even if all we can offer is the sparkle of kind, smiling eyes.

Also, whether we can take our other masks off and let others and God help us face our fears and pain.

Don’t Worry, Be Happy As we re-adjust our lives during a second lockdown, one local resident is putting a smile on our faces and giving us hope, thanks to the humble worm.

A ‘worry worm’ to be exact.

The worry worm is made from crocheted wool and carries with it a positive, handwritten verse to remind us not to worry during these difficult times. They have been hidden locally and are a nice surprise for the community to find when out and about doing exercise.

“The worry worms are a random act of kindness project going around the crochet community right now,” said Nichelle Ritchie.

“I saw all the great painted rock hunts in my area and wanted to join in. After seeing the worry worms on Facebook, I decided that they would be perfect to add to the treasure hunts” she added.

Some residents have already been lucky to find the worry worms in places around Surveyors Creek and Blue Hills.

“I initially made 30 worry worms, but with everyone so excited I’m going to be making as many as I can and doing more drops. Hopefully, I will be able to drop them in different locations around Glenmore Park. I will keep everyone updated on this on social media” Nichelle explained.

The feedback about the local initiative has been incredibly positive so far and Nichelle hopes to build on this.

“It’s good to see that it is encouraging children to be active when they are out. If people are loving this idea, I may do some random drops of other small projects that I make in the future.

Last month at this time, we were in the early days of the lockdown announced across Greater Sydney.

I spoke about Winter being the ideal time to hibernate and catch up on your Netflix list enjoying delicious winter-rich meals and staying toasty by the heater.

And here we are (as I write this) almost a month later, and I’ve all but exhausted my Netflix list and moved onto Stan. I’ve picked a few good books to catch up on some well overdue ‘reading’ time and in a Covid safe manner, set about hitting my daily exercise goals.

As a family we’ve used this time to explore new and interesting things to do, including online cooking and art classes. It’s been a great opportunity to catch up on all those long overdue sorting and organising tasks that we never have time to do.

Take each day as it comes. Times are tough for many. Try to draw on the positives. We will get through this.

‘Life is not about being rich, being popular, being educated or being perfect. It’s about being real, humble and kind’ remember that.
