Natasha’s Star Continues to Shine Glenmore Park’s talented musician Natasha Duarte has certainly had a busy year this year, including studying music therapy full time, doing 3-4 gigs a week around Sydney as well as putting the finishing touches to her soon to be released album titled ‘Living Proof’.

“This album I wrote entirely by myself and it’s an album that I feel shows my true voice as a musician. Because it’s such a personal album, I really made it for my own personal creative outlet. I’ll be playing the songs at my frequent gigs and the album will be available through a few different outlets such as iTunes and Spotify and there will also be physical copies” said Natasha.

On the back of the new album is the exciting news that Natasha’s first single ‘Never Say Sorry’ has already been picked up for syncing opportunities in an episode of the popular television show Black Matter in the US and Canada; “I find the syncing opportunity this early on the albums release extremely humbling and I just hope to keep on getting the album heard by more people and hope that it might be able to have some kind of impact on its listeners, like all the music I love so much has had on me” she said.

Natasha described her experience of recording the album as ‘extremely positive’, enlisting the services of Murray Sheridan, a distinguished producer/musician and an old friend. “I also had seven amazing musicians play on this album and all of them were so professional and proficient with their instruments which also made Cont. Glenmore Park High School recently announced the launch of “The Charity Shield”, a fundraising initiative of the school’s 2017 leaders. The beneficiaries of the school’s fundraising efforts are a number of local charities, including The Haven – Nepean Women’s Shelter.

The Haven is an urgently-needed shelter for women fleeing domestic violence or suffering homelessness, which is in the process of being established in the Penrith area.

The effort, supported by Women’s Community Shelters, is a response to overwhelming levels of demand that have resulted in half of local women being turned away from crisis accommodation because of a lack of capacity at existing shelters.

The board of The Haven is in the process of looking for a property to lease which will house the shelter, with the aim to have the doors open by November this year.

The Haven’s chair of the board, Sharon Levy, said Penrith has a critical shortage of available crisis accommodation.

“One in every two women who are fleeing family violence or experiencing homelessness are being turned away because shelters are at capacity.

We have been overwhelmed with offers of support from the community, including the show of generosity from local schools such as Glenmore Park High School,” Ms Levy said.

Women’s Community Shelters CEO Annabelle Daniel said there was a desperate need for additional accommodation to shelter women and children fleeing domestic violence.

“Based on our past experience, and the level of demand in the local community, we expect that The Haven will be full within a week of the doors opening,” Ms Daniel said.

Yet, what do you think Jesus says “the Good Life” looks like?

With much of life we are taught to be independent, to grow up standing on our own two feet. Sadly, for many of us this means living independently of God; living a life where God, at best, is kept at arm’s length or, at worst, is not included at all.

Jesus says our life should be the very opposite. God made us.

He knows what is best for us. We will find meaning, purpose and fulfilment when we recognise the best way to live is the way God intended for us.

No matter who we are, there are times when we wish life could be different – better. Perhaps one of the most striking and encouraging of Jesus’ claims is that people who follow him, listen to him, trust his promises and his direction for life, can actually begin to experience this good life.

It has been the experience of Christian people since Jesus, as well as those of us who belong to Glenmore Park Anglican Church, that faith in Jesus, knowledge of God’s love towards us,

hope in God’s promises have been a powerful force to build and sustain this good life.

Excite Dance and Cheer Opens New Studio It was the end of an era and the start of a new one. After ten years in the Glenmore Park Community Centre, Excite Dance has grown so big that they have moved to new premises in South Penrith. The local dance and cheerleading school has been a mainstay for over a decade in the community and has enjoyed great success.

“We have been lucky and privileged to see Excite grow within the community” said owner and founder, Kerry Richardson. “The growth has been steady over the years with many families coming to Excite through referrals from friends and family”.

St. Clair and Plumpton were originally considered as possible locations for the school all those years ago, but Glenmore Park made the final cut which turned out to be the best decision because of the support from the local residents.

Excite dancers and cheerleaders perform all over and have quite a reputation for taking first place in competitions and eisteddfods. The award winning cheer team won ‘Grand Champions’ at the National Championship last year on the Gold Coast. It is the highest level that can be achieved at a cheer competition in Australia. They also won Grand Champion last year at a competition in Hawaii.

In celebration of their ten year anniversary, the school held a Gala Evening to celebrate. The students and teachers were all dressed in their formal wear and shared memories of their time at Excite. Quite a number of the young dancers had been there since they were toddlers.

“Some of the children even brought in their very first ballet tutu from when they were 3 and are now 14” said Kerry. “We had a wonderful slide show of the eisteddfods, festivals, uniforms, students and teachers from the past, bringing back lots of memories”.

The new location for Excite Dance and Cheer is at York Road across from Jamison Park.

Face It – We’re Not Better Than Others!

Confronting, but let me explain.

Our society encourages us to show we are better than others. That’s why we glow with pride announcing we have a prestigious career or live in a prestigious suburb. It’s why we can think we are better than others because of the car we drive, the clothes we wear, or when our children do better at school or sport.

I suggest though, that all of the effort attached to being better than others is a total waste of time! Why? Each of us is special, but we don’t actually have the power to make ourselves better than others! We don’t have the power to alter the value of our own lives or that of others. Sure, we may earn more money or have the “right” body shape but such things cannot change the intrinsic value of our life or that of others. They are more like the skin of who we are (the surface or pretend part) but the real truth about our value has nothing to do with our performance.

This is why the Bible teaches: “When you compare yourselves among yourselves you are not wise.”

Our true value is found purely in the fact that God decided to create us and treat us as special – he loves each of us. This bestows a sacred sense of value to all who have the privilege of human existence. It makes the “I am better” game pale into insignificance - a game we are compelled to play when we don’t yet appreciate the value of our life and still need to prove it.

Jesus showed us the power, freedom and soul-rest we can have when we know we are special and don’t need to prove it by trying to be better than others. Knowing it is not like coming to know someone’s address – we discover it deep in our being as we orient our lives around Jesus Christ. Living well flows seamlessly from it.

traffic update Night Work On The Northern Road Motorists are advised of changed traffic conditions on the Northern Road for work to be carried out between Glenmore Park and Jamison Road.

Temporary lane closures are in place for site investigations, barrier installation, earthwork and the building of temporary pavement.

For the benefit of motorists, night work will be carried out between 7pm and 7am until Sunday 27 August including weekends, weather permitting.

Traffic control and a reduced speed limit will be in place for the safety of workers and motorists.

Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions, and follow the directions of signs and traffic control.

Swing West Big Band is an 18-member Big Band with many musicians each having 40 plus professional years of playing either in their own jazz bands or for some of the most well respected entertainers and Big Bands in Australia and abroad.

Swing West Jazz Orchestra (SWJO) is the local Penrith City Community Band, which over the years has transformed to an 18 piece Big Band. They are located in the Penrith area and have been entertaining audiences at various clubs, private functions and charity events for many years. It’s love for Big Band music and a passion for entertaining the community that brings them together to form one of the best Big Bands in the Western Sydney Region.

The Big Band has been growing stronger and stronger under the direction of their Musical Director, John Webster, a Glenmore Park resident and promises to be their best line up yet. John has played trumpet with many a respected artist over the years including Daly Wilson Big Band, Ricky May, Billy Field and many more, and is giving his experience to this community Band.

The last two Dance Nights they held at the Penrith Golf Club were a great success, with many of the audience enjoying a night of music and dance. This next performance promises to be a memorable night and nothing can beat a roaring Big Band when it all comes together with their local Blue Mountains Vocalist Jenny Knight.

They believe that SWJO brings a taste of nostalgia for the old and something new and fresh for the young by playing Big Band tunes that are recognized by both young and old. You can hear the music of Buddy Rich, Maynard Ferguson, Benny Goodman, Gordon Goodwin, Count Basie, Glenn Miller and many of the old Big Band favourites. Sing and dance along with tunes from Natalie Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Julie London, Linda Ronstadt, to name a few.

Is My Child Ready for School?

The pressure to give your child the best educational start in life leaves many families stressed and fearful of making the wrong decision. How do you know if he/she is ready? What should they know before they start? Should you send them when they are 5 or 6?

In New South Wales, the law states that a child must be enrolled in school by the age of 6. This means that you may send your child if they are turning 5 on or before July 31st (for Public Schools - the suggested cut-off date varies in Independent and Catholic). Children should attend school from the beginning of the year if they are already 5, turning 6 that year.

Despite the plethora of opinions about the ‘correct’ time to send a child to school, it is ultimately the decision of the parents to do what they believe is best. As each child is unique, it is important to consider a number of factors when making your decision.

Here are some basic questions you may like to answer to assist in making an informed decision: 1. Can your child listen attentively and follow instructions?

2. Is your child able to go to the toilet, wash hands and open food packets independently?

3. Can your child concentrate on a task and complete it?

4. Does your child express thoughts, feelings and ideas?

5. Is your child able to use a pencil to draw circles, lines, scribbles and letters?

6. Will your child share with others and take turns?

Along with your responses to these questions, it is important to consider your child’s emotional maturity, social awareness and additional needs before making a decision.

Remember - the greatest preparation for school is talking with your child about it. Let them know that you think school and learning are important. Children develop positive attitudes toward school when they see that their parents and families value education.

It is equally important for the development of healthy selfesteem that children learn how to deal with disappointment.

As a reaction to not getting what they want, such as being chosen for a team, children may sometimes put themselves down, saying things like: “I’m dumb”, “you hate me” or “I’m just stupid”. If this happens, try to avoid being too sympathetic.

Instead encourage your child to try again after the set-back and to enjoy the activity or game even if they aren’t the winner.

Rather than simply reassuring your child that everything will be okay, you can help your child develop their own sense of worth by letting them know that you understand their feelings of disappointment and that you are there to help them work out a reasonable way of dealing with that disappointment.

Remember too, when you’re helping your child with an activity or with homework concentrate on effort not results.

Praising your child for trying and making an improvement will motivate them to continue trying at a difficult task.

Entertainer Steve Murphy entertained them with well-known favourite songs as they enjoyed their hot Christmas lunch with all the trimmings.

Each person who attended received a Christmas goodies bag to enjoy at home later.

Nepean Food Services Meals on Wheels holds the Christmas in July event each year to bring together our many social support groups across the area at a time of year when people really appreciate a bit of cheerful company in a social meal setting. Door to door transport and volunteer assistance is provided and forms an important part of ensuring that clients can join the event.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT edUcatered Operating on the key belief that every child has the ability to learn and as a community we need to support our children by catering for their individual needs, edUcatered is changing the face of educational services in our local area. This exciting new educational consultancy business is the brain-child of local educator, writer and consultant - Sara Drebber. Sara has over fifteen years’ experience in education, working in independent and public schools in a variety of teaching roles. She brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to her role as an educational consultant and the founder of edUcatered.

“It has always been my aim, like most educators, to create a nurturing and supportive environment in which children can develop and learn” Sara explained. “Over the years, I have noticed that parents and teachers often lack the necessary support to cater to the individual needs of the children. I want to see that culture changed”. Sara established edUcatered because she saw a need to facilitate practical needs-based opportunities for parent and teachers to develop strategies and a greater sense of home-school cohesiveness.

Potassium - The Hidden & Maybe The Most Important Bone Protector Potassium is one of the most important bone building nutrients we can eat!! We’ve known since the early 1950s that deficiency in potassium results in reduced bone calcification in animals. Yet this nutrient is rarely talked about in relation to osteoporosis! There is a direct relationship between the rate of bone mineralisation & the level of potassium in chick cranial bones. If more mineralisation needs to occur more potassium is needed and visa-versa. Indeed, feeding small amounts of ammonium to rats (yes, the cleaning fluid) which blocks uptake of potassium in the intestines causes rats to lose bone, while feeding potassium (bicarbonate) to the same rats stimulates bone formation and even prevents osteoporosis when these rats are fed low calcium diets. Potassium seems to help control the deposition of phosphate in bone and in this way, promotes bone calcification somewhat independently of calcium intake.

In humans supplementing potassium daily: 1. does not change intestinal calcium absorption, but rather 2. decreases bone resorption 3. increases bone formation and 4. significantly reduces calcium loss in urine helping the body retain calcium.

Several studies show high potassium diets protect against osteoporosis. Tucker et al. showed that men and women in the highest quartile of potassium intake (about 3494–3999 mg/ day), had significantly greater hip-bone density compared with men and women in lower quartiles.

In another study of 266 elderly women, subjects in the highest quartile of urinary potassium excretion (a marker that reflects potassium intake) had significantly higher total hip bone density after 1 year (5%) and 5 years (6%), and significantly higher total body bone density (4%) bone density in distal tibia total (7%) and trabecular (11%) bone densities at 5 years than those in the lowest quartile.

Potassium intake levels in the modern world are a real problem.

Dietary patterns have changed so much that westerners have seen a 400% decrease in potassium intake (and a 400% increase in sodium intake – see next month). The displacement of vegetables & fruit by grain products, milk & meat is the fundamental problem. In the US, 10% of men and less that 1% of women consume sufficient potassium daily. Australian’s have similar dietary patterns. Australian men eat about 2800-3200 mg, women 2600-2900 mg potassium daily. The Australian NHMRC recommends 4700mg per day to avoid chronic disease.

In paleolithic times people received between 7000-10500mg per day. You can see why we might have a problem.

So where do you get it? Yes, that’s right you need to eat a large amount & variety of vegetables (especially green leafy veges), potatoes, nuts, seeds, legumes fish & fruit daily. 10 servings of veges if possible. Aussies tend to have cereal & milk for breaky, a sandwich or wrap for lunch and meat rice or pasta for dinner but not with enough veges! Potassium supplementation is not the answer – and could be dangerous for certain medical conditions. Let’s take a look at the potassium content of some different foods. You can see that the foods we eat most of are generally lower in potassium.

Makes 12-14 pupcakes.

Ingredients 2ž cups water

Ÿ cup unsweetened apple sauce Ÿ teaspoon vanilla 4 cups wholemeal flour 1 cup dried apple pieces (you can also use fresh fruit) 1 tablespoon baking powder 1 cage-free egg, beaten slightly 4 tablespoons honey Directions 1. Preheat oven to 175°C. Spray a cupcake tin with cooking spray.

2. Mix all wet ingredients thoroughly and combine dry ingredients in a separate bowl.

3. Slowly add wet ingredients to dry ingredients, scraping well to make sure no dry mixture is left.

4. Pour the mixture into the cupcake tin.

5. Bake for 30 minutes. Insert a toothpick into the centre of a pupcake and if it comes out dry, they are ready to come out of the oven.

6. Wait until cooled to serve.

7. Store in a sealed container.

Mitchell’s Story Local boy Mitchell Watson may only be 12 years of age, but he has already proven to be an inspiration to many, after overcoming many setbacks in the talented athlete’s sporting career.

Despite being born with Bilateral Hip Dysplasia and Ehler Danlos Syndrome (EDS), a Hypermobility connective tissue disorder which required surgeries at the age of 16 months and 3 years, Mitchell has played representative basketball for the Penrith Panthers Basketball Club in the Under 12’s.

Not long after, a follow-up appointment found that his right hip was still not developing properly and was still displaced. His family then discovered before his surgery (after a basketball injury) that he had Osteochondritis Dissecans (OCD), a joint disorder with lesions on the bone and Osgood Schlatters Disease in both knees.

Mitchell had hip surgery in February last year, which was called a Triple Osteotomy, where the Ilium/Pelvis is cut in three places and screwed back together to help realign and relocate the hip in the socket. His pubis bone was accidentally broken in surgery and he was bed ridden for four weeks. He was then in a wheelchair till mid-June and on crutches until the end of the year.

“I remember how happy he was just to spend some time out of the wheelchair and be in the water” said Kim, Mitchell’s mother “ I had to lift him in and out of the pool before he could weight bear on his leg. The recovery was a long one and he didn’t get rid of the crutches until December. For him it would have felt like an eternity being such an active boy”.

With recovery behind him, Mitchell’s strong will and determination allowed him to make the State Swimming Championships for 13 Years Freestyle. He was given clearance to go back to all sports in March, returning to basketball as well as playing AFL and cricket for school.

“My advice to everyone is, it doesn’t matter if you have a disability, injury or you are finding it hard, never give up. Do what you can and say to yourself ‘I can do it!’ Think to yourself what you can achieve and push yourself.
