NSW Government Funds New Programs In Mulgoa To Keep Seniors Connected

Seniors across Mulgoa are set to benefit from a new program run by Penrith City Council, which is designed to keep them socially connected with others.

Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies congratulated Penrith City Council on receiving $40,000 through the Reducing Social Isolation for Seniors Grants Program.

“Helping older people build lasting relationships shows we value their important place in our region as role models, carers and volunteers,” Mrs Davies said.

“I’m proud our community has stepped up to promote activities and resources, which empower seniors to stay connected.”

In partnership with LEEP Council, Penrith City Council will deliver 10 Digital Literacy Mentoring Workshops for isolated seniors through community centres in 5 priority locations.

LEEP mentors will work alongside individual seniors to develop strong relationships that will extend beyond the life of the program.

Participants will gain skills and confidence in using digital devices to better connect with their local community, family and friends, and access a range of social and support services to more fully participate and feel included. Digital devices will be available free for seniors to borrow from their local community centres after the project finishes.

Minister for Seniors Mark Coure said 24 local councils and community groups have received a share in $600,000 to run programs designed to reduce social isolation among seniors.

“Even without the challenges of COVID-19 – no one likes to be alone or feel disconnected from their community, especially not our seniors,” Mr Coure said.

“This funding is about helping create environments where people can come together, meet new people and, above all, enjoy themselves in a social environment.

“These programs are helping us achieve exactly that, whether it be helping seniors learn a new skill, connect with like-minded people or even rekindle their

passion for a previous hobby,” he said.

Grants of up to $60,000 were on offer for NSW councils or organisations running community-focused, meaningful activities. They must run until December 2022. The projects actively seek out socially isolated NSW residents aged 65 and older, and/or Aboriginal people aged 50 and over, and/or priority target groups.

Local Celebration Awards

Ms McIntosh said she had been in contact with the Prime Minister and Defence Minister throughout the floods about the impact on her local community and bringing Minister Dutton to meet the SES was an opportunity to thank our local volunteers for their extraordinary service.

“This is the second time in 12 months that we have experienced extreme weather and floods. Our local emergency services have gone above and beyond to support those who have needed help.

This includes working with the Australian Defence Force, to rescue a family from their flooded Werrington home.

“Both the Minister and I wanted to thank our local volunteers for their tireless work, and great partnership with the ADF”. v

FRNSW Warns Against Using Generators Inside Homes Penrith City Council’s new Local Celebration Awards are an opportunity for us to shine a light on the people in our community who are kind, caring, generous and put others before themselves.

The Making a Difference- Community Service Award recognises the person or group who volunteer to help during emergencies or natural disasters, champion environmental causes, contribute to community sports or provide exceptional community leadership.

Minister For Defence Makes Local Visit

The Minister for Defence, Peter Dutton, recently joined Lindsay MP Melissa McIntosh at SES Headquarters in Claremont Meadows to meet with local SES volunteers who had been responding to the floods.

Minister Dutton and Ms McIntosh then visited the Defence Establishment at Orchard Hills to meet and have breakfast with local Army, Navy, and Airforce Cadets.

Following the destructive floods occurring across the state, Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) is warning the community against the incorrect use of fuel-powered equipment.

Fuel-powered equipment can include generators or pumps that have an exhaust pipe.

The exhaust fumes from the engine can quickly fill a room, house or garage and render the occupants unconscious.

Fire and Rescue NSW Assistant Commissioner Education and Training, Roger Mentha said it's critical to avoid the use of generators and other fuel-powered equipment inside their homes.

"This type of equipment is not suitable for indoor use and can lead to a buildup of colourless and odourless carbon monoxide. This can be fatal as it reduces oxygen when inside”.

“All fuel-powered devices should be used in accordance with manufacturer's recommended practices.

“Never use portable generators indoors, or in garages and sheds. They should always be used outside well away from windows, doors, vents or any other opening,” he said.

Community Recovers After Floods

The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) Penrith Unit has been busy supporting and working with our local community in the recent storm and flood emergencies. Volunteers responded to more than 300 calls for assistance across the Penrith local government area, in addition to supporting other SES units.

“With requests completed, we are currently working on Rapid Impact Assessments with our partner agencies – NSW Rural Fire Service, Fire and Rescue NSW, and the Defence Force – supporting the collection of information about damage to properties and infrastructure that will help inform ongoing response and recovery planning” said Ian Hyde, NSW State Emergency Service – Penrith Unit, Deputy Unit Commander.

“We saw storm damage across Leonay, Emu Plains and Emu Heights at the beginning of the event with several trees damaging property and the usual leaking roofs. The flooding event followed directly on from us preparing for it with the distribution of sandbags provided by Penrith City Council and the Rapid Relief Team. The first flood peak left Penrith LGA relatively unscathed. The second peak, however, saw flooding more widely spread from Londonderry in the North to Wallacia in the South. Our teams responded to both storm damage and flood emergency requests for assistance. Flash flooding once again occurred in Hobart and Melbourne Streets in St Marys requiring some evacuation” Ian continued.

Floodwaters have gone down and there are no longer any evacuation warnings or order for our area. Residents are advised to return with caution to flood affected areas. As residents clean up and recover, NSW SES advises everyone to monitor local conditions and remain alert, drive slowly, obey roadblocks, and never drive through floodwaters. It’s easy to make mistakes. I make them all the time. When you make a mistake, it often means saying sorry to someone. There are small mistakes like forgetting to buy the milk at the shops, but there are also big mistakes. Probably the biggest, in my mind, is not seeing Jesus for who he is. This might result in simply ignoring Jesus and just ‘getting on’ with life. For some of the religious leaders they saw the threat Jesus was to them and killed him by nailing him to a cross.

The Old Testament prophets said this, ‘he was led like a lamb to the slaughter although he was innocent of crime’. One of the eyewitnesses of the crucifixion said, ‘he committed no sin and no deceit was found in his mouth’. It’s not just that he was innocent, his resurrection shows that he truly is the Son of God. His death was not just an injustice, but he is the one who died in our place, bore our sins and took out punishment, so we could be forgiven! It means we can say ‘sorry’ to God and have a new relationship with him. This is worth celebrating!

Does God Have A Face?

As Easter approaches, whatever this celebration means for us, God-questions often swirl around it. Is there a God? If so, how do you find him? What is his purpose? What is he like? Does God even matter?

What does Easter have to do with any of it? The bunnies and eggs have little to do with it.

But the declaration in the Bible that God sent his Son Jesus into the world to die on a cross to pay for the sins of humanity is central to the Easter celebration. Importantly, it gives God a face. It tells us some important things about God. Firstly, it makes it crystal clear that God is loving and kind. In fact, he loves each of us so deeply that he sent his own Son into mortal danger for our sake; to deal with our sins and make a way for relationship with God. You might be doubting a God who would do that to his own Son, but the high point of the story of Easter is that by God’s power Jesus was resurrected again. And the Bible teaches that those who give their allegiance to Jesus will also be resurrected when their physical life on earth ends. This all tells us that God is powerful and is committed to using his power for the good of humanity.

A final way that Easter gives God a face is in what happens after Jesus is resurrected. The Bible teaches that he is exalted to a place of great authority over the whole creation. Therefore, prayers to him are effective. And from that place of great authority, Jesus sent God’s Spirit to help any who reach out to God for help.

Not only does God love each of us and have great power, he is willing to use for our good. He is also present with us by his Spirit with the intention of helping us live our best life.

Does God have a face? Yes, and Easter helps us to see it. Happy Easter!

Emma and Chris’ Surprise Wedding

Guests at Scarlett Yopp’s first birthday party were treated to a wonderful surprise in Glenmore Park last month. At the end of her party, Scarlett’s parents, Emma, and Chris, delighted the guests with a surprise wedding.

Emma and Chris were married on 6th March at Daily Break, with around 80 guests including children in attendance.

“Chris has Terminal Cancer and recently we had received some worsening news. Having most of our close friends and family attending Scarlett’s first birthday, we decided to use this opportunity as we were unsure if we would get another chance to have everyone together again” said Emma to the Glenmore Gazette.

The surprise wedding was organised in just a few short days, which was an amazing achievement.

“Organising a wedding in 3 days kept me busy, but I made a ‘need on the day’ list and went from there. We

didn’t want over the top, so kept it short and sweet” Emma explained.

The memorable day was enjoyed by Emma and Chris, with their children Scarlett and Imogen.

“Scarlett had the best time seeing her little friends, enjoying her party, and having loads of cake. With the wedding side of things, we had our ceremony, loads of photos, and enjoyed the moment with each other” she reflected.

The family would like to thank everyone who helped make their big day special.

“We would like to thank Susan and her staff from Daily Break for an amazing celebration for Scarlett and for our wedding. She went above and beyond for us on the day. A special thank you to our celebrant Lauren McLean for putting together an amazing speech and accommodating our wants and needs in 3 day - you are amazing. Also, to Candice Wilson at Candy Cakes for an awesome Sesame Street birthday cake for Scarlett.

“Lastly, to my dear friend Rachel Schweikert for all your running around the day before. Helping me get the bits we needed for the day and for helping with hair, makeup, photography and for being a great friend. Dingo Den Animal Rescue is a non-profit organisation, registered with the ACNC. While it is unassuming from the outside, the sanctuary within is home to a number of displaced and orphaned dingoes who require specialised care, medical treatment, and a safe haven until they can be rehomed.

Dingo Den Animal Rescue exists to save the lives of the wildhearted and is committed to a bright and sustainable Australian future. Dingoes are often misunderstood creatures and are key to maintaining Australia’s vulnerable native flora and fauna.

Our vision is to create a dingo-safe Australia where dingoes are recognised as a protected species.

Penrith ANZAC Day 2022 The City of Penrith RSL Sub-Branch will be hosting the School ANZAC Commemoration and ANZAC Day Dawn Service this month.

The School ANZAC Commemoration will take place on Tuesday 5th April at Penrith Paceway. It will be virtually run by schools, with Winmalee High School the host school for the day. 1,500 school children and teachers are expected to attend the event. Local Cadet Units will also be attending and marching. Penrith Sub-Branch are supplying transport to/from the event for the schools.

The public can attend, with the grandstand/roped off area restricted to school children for safety.

Both events are the first unrestricted in 3 years.

The ANZAC Day Commemoration will be on Monday 25th April. The Silent March will start at 4:30am, with 300+ veterans and uniformed personnel taking part.

Dawn Service begins at 5:00am at Memory Park in Penrith and will go for 30-40 minutes. Breakfast will be served to the public immediately following the service at the Penrith RSL, for a gold coin donation.

The City of Penrith RSL Sub-Branch are expecting 3,000+ people at the Dawn Service and they anticipate the streets to be full.

They will be placing TV monitors across strategic locations in the Penrith CBD, allowing people to view the service without accessing Memory Park.

Immediate access surrounding Memory Park will be closed off to all traffic from midnight 24/4, until 10:00am on 25/4. There will be no traffic in or out of that dedicated area during this time.

Current COVID Safe rules at the time will be in place. Set up seating in Memory Park will be reserved for veterans and invited guests.

It is fully supported by civic leaders, local, state, and federal members. The service will be attended by our elected members or their representatives.

They also anticipate this to be supported by the public, particularly given current world affairs.

Many parents now find unexplained transactions on their credit cards, thanks to the rise of “in-app purchases”. In-app purchases refers to buying goods from inside of an application on a mobile device. Most children’s apps and games are free to download but make their profit this way.

A recent study found that 95% of games targeted at children have at least one advertisement. Despite this, children are not developmentally equipped to respond to manipulative marketing strategies used to push in-app purchases. Advertising can be positioned seamlessly into gameplay, making it difficult for children to know the difference. Many children don’t even know that they are spending real money in these games.

Emotional strategies can particularly be difficult for children.

On Roblox, many in-game items are advertised as “for a limited time only”, creating pressure to buy now or miss out. Peer pressure also contributes heavily to Roblox purchases as the game has a hot topic in the school yard.

While regulators get to grips with the issues, there are unfortunately few protections for parents who find themselves out of pocket for their children’s in-app purchases. Parents are often refused refunds by their financial institutions, the app’s carrier Apple Store or Android Play Store, or the app’s creator.

Therefore, prevention is better than cure!

It is important to ensure you are supervising children’s use of devices, especially for children under 5 years old. Children need support and guidance to discern and manage online advertising. It is important for children to express their wants, but we all must learn to manage the disappointment of not getting something we had our heart set on.

Make sure you lock or set up two-step authentication for inapp purchases on any devices used by children. If you have an iPhone or iPad, you can lock in-app purchases through your App Store settings. On Android devices, you can configure the settings in Google Play so that all purchases require twostep authentication, meaning you will receive an email or SMS requiring you to finalise a purchase.

After two disrupted seasons due to the pandemic, Glenmore Park Cricket Club have scorched the pitch thanks to a successful year.

Season 2021/22 for the Redbacks saw 286 registered players turn out for the local club. This consisted of 5 Senior teams, 17 Junior teams and a Junior Blasters Program. This making them one of the biggest clubs in the Penrith District.

An action-packed season brought with it many highlights.

Several new teams were formed in both Juniors and Seniors and the teams were able to merge to create new friendships.

The club had 2 Junior teams in the Final. The Under 12’s were crowned undefeated premiers, after their game was cancelled due to the weather. The Under 16’s managed to play their final and won in an absolute thriller. This saw the game going down to the last ball of the match!

“After all that had gone on with Covid and the uncertainty of the start to our season, it was very enjoyable seeing all the kids getting together again and playing a sport that they love and are so passionate about. To be able to assist and pass on my skill and knowledge of this great game to these excited and enthusiastic kids is so enjoyable” smiled Michael Pelle, Glenmore Park Cricket Club Secretary.

Their End of Season Presentation will be held on Sunday 1st May at St Marys Leagues Club.

It takes a special kind of person to dedicate the significant amount of energy and effort that Daena Madon has to her local community. A local Glenmore Park resident, Daena has been awarded the NSW Government Community Service Award for her remarkable demonstration of community service at only 17 years of age.

So many people have been touched by her incredible efforts and she was recently named Penrith’s Young Citizen of the Year. When Daena was only 12 years old, she convinced her parents to foster a Guide Dogs Australia puppy in an effort to assist a person who was vision impaired.

For the past six years, Daena has been a cadet with St John’s Ambulance and in 2020 was recognised for her service and volunteering efforts as their Senior Cadet. She has also been recognised by her school and by Volunteering Australia for her extraordinary dedication to community service as well as her contribution to volunteering. The charity group Variety has awarded Daena a commendation for donating her hair to children suffering from Alopecia.

In addition to these impressive efforts, for the past two years, Daena has been designing and writing articles for the Lions Club of Emu Plains NSW, has been selected by the Rotary Club of Penrith to attend Rotary Youth Leadership camp and participated in the Salvation Army’s Red Shield Door Knock appeal.

In recognition of Daena Madon’s enormous efforts it is more than deserving that she is awarded the NSW Government Community Service Award.

Do You Need a Hand?

Sometimes we need a helping hand. With the recent floods and pandemic, there’s never been a more important time to help one another.

Local Keith Myles has started ‘Penrith Helping Hands’, where the local community can come together if they need a hand or would like to lend a hand.

Penrith Helping Hands is a Facebook page, that was created last month. In just a few short days, 250 members joined, and it continues to grow.

“I have done volunteer work with Mama Lana’s. I had planned to do other volunteer work, when COVID restrictions made that difficult” explained Keith to the District Gazette.

“After having a conversation with a friend about how much I enjoy volunteer work, they were talking about a job that needed to be done where they didn’t have help and could have done with a helping hand” he continued.

The motto for Penrith Helping Hands is simple, “Kindness is free”. It is not an organisation, rather a concept that can be practiced.

“There is bound to be people who will need help and will also like to help. This will create opportunities for the community to come together and even make friends” smiled Keith.

For now, he hopes to watch it evolve. There may be new areas introduced depending on how it’s welcomed and its success.

“The more people that follow the page means that more people are getting and giving help” Keith stated.

“It’s important to give something back. This also brings good karma” he ended.

Artery walls contain smooth muscle cells. When animals can’t make MGP: 1. For genetic reasons, 2. Because they’re given warfarin; extensive calcification of large arteries occurs within 4 weeks of birth.

Warfarin stops vitamin K being utilised in the final step of MGP production, so immature forms of MGP are produced. Immature MGP fails to prevent arterial calcification, and arteries harden. Warfarin causes “artificial” vitamin K insufficiency leading to arteriosclerosis.

Vitamin K insufficiency/deficiency can occur for other reasons: 1. Low dietary intake (significant but underappreciated cause) 2. Disturbed intestinal vitamin K absorption due to gastrointestinal disorders, 3. Antibiotic therapy.

Artery walls endure huge stresses second-to-second, as they’re forced to endlessly expand/stretch and recontract by the beating heart. To cope, vessel wall tissues are highly metabolically active, and in healthy (nutrient-replete) persons, wall cells have sufficient nutrients to continually repair/maintain themselves and wall tissues.

In unhealthy people (multiple-nutrient-deficits), vessel wall cells cannot meet physiological demands placed upon them by their high stress environment. Wall cells fail to complete the necessary repairs to maintain themselves and arterial wall structural integrity. Pathological

wall changes appear. According to this model, cardiovascular disease is primarily a dietary deficiency disorder.

Under normal/physiological conditions, arterial wall fluids are supersaturated with calcium and phosphate, however calciumdeposition is prevented by circulating and locally produced calcification inhibitors (including MPG). Under ‘pathologic (nutrient depleted) conditions, arterial wall stress leads to: 1. Artery wall cells undergoing apoptosis (they die), 2. Bits of dead cells (apoptotic bodies) and other signals alerting (summoning) platelets and immune system cells 3. Platelets bind to damaged vessel-walls releasing calcificationpromoting factors 4. Remaining artery wall cells respond to these signals by synthesizing all components of atherosclerotic lesions including calcium depositing proteins 5. But insufficient anti-calcification factors are synthesised 6. And mineralization occurs Vitamin K via MGP, inhibits calcification. MGP blocks: 1. Pro-calcification cell signal-production: a. Apoptotic bodies b. Matrix vesicles c. Hormonal signals 2. Calcium depositing proteins production 3. Calcium deposition directly by binding calcium-salts 4. Growth of existing calcium micro-deposits (covers them) So, to avoid artery calcification, just eat more Vitamin K containing natto and fresh leafy greens.

HomeCo Glenmore Park Town Centre has introduced two dynamic community murals depicting the local region and the history of the town centre.

In 2017, local student, Ayva Burke was the winner of a design competition creating the historical Glenmore Park Town Centre logo. Since the acquisition in December 2020, HomeCo rebranded the centre to complement their other existing sites including HomeCo Penrith. Professional street artist, Anthony Jones worked with Ayva to bring to life her work once again at Glenmore Park.

“I love to draw, and I love nature, especially all the beautiful tree leaves in Autumn. I remember the day I made the logo, sitting at the table with my brothers who were fighting over who would win because they were also creating one to enter,” said Ayva. “When I was announced the winner, I was so excited that mine was chosen but it wasn’t until I saw it in the shopping centre that it made it real”.

“Now 5 years later, I am thrilled to have been included in such an exciting project along with Anthony from Urban Art and HomeCo. The community murals will showcase all that we know and love and the beauty of our suburb”.

HomeCo introduced two community murals located in the Coles side of the Town Centre. The theme of the murals is the history of the shopping centre with the previous brand elements alongside the family and wonderful icons that are important to the community.
