Nepean District’s Football Season Kicks Off Tanya Davies MP, Member for Mulgoa was on hand last month to mark the kick off to the Nepean District’s football season, delayed by 1 week due to severe wet weather conditions.

“I am delighted to be invited by Michael Rooney, President of the Glenmore Park Football Club in my electorate of Mulgoa, to mark the start of the club’s 2014 football season” said Tanya Davies MP. Glenmore Park Football Club is the largest of the 32 affiliated clubs in the Nepean district and one of 7 football clubs located in Tanya’s electorate of Mulgoa.

“I am impressed by the hard work and commitment displayed by all the volunteers, players and officials; in particular the officials from the newly formed Nepean Referees Group (NRG).

Penrith City Council is inviting local residents to plant a tree for their Mum, this Mother’s Day. This special community event will be held on Sunday 11 May 2014 at Regentville.

Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said Trees for Mum was a wonderful opportunity to recognise the importance mothers play in our society.

“For those who have lost their Mum, it’s a chance to remember and create a living memorial,” Cr Fowler said.

“For those blessed to still have their Mum with them, planting a tree is a lovely way to support the environment and celebrate their relationship.”

Trees for Mum is a national event supported by Landcare Australia, which encourages all ages to celebrate their mum and the beauty of life.

To date more than 20,000 people have participated in the program, at over 100 planting sites across Australia.

All trees and plants are Australian natives and planting supports the Bushcare initiatives in the local area.

Participants should wear long trousers, a long-sleeve shirt and closed-toe shoes. A hat and sunscreen are also recommended.

Trees for Mum will be held at Gibbes Street, off Spencer Street, Regentville on Sunday 11 May from 9am to Midday. Access is 600 metres south of the M4 and Mulgoa Road intersection. It’s free to take part, but to ensure Council has enough plants for everyone, you must register. Call 4732 8088 or email parks@penrithcity. nsw.gov.au.

Next Generation of City Leaders Future politicians have a chance to dabble in local government – in a competition for local primary school pupils.

As part of Local Government Week 2014, Penrith City Council is giving lucky students the opportunity to be Junior Mayor or Junior Councillors and take part in a mock Council meeting.

Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said the competition provides a unique opportunity for primary students to learn about the role of Council.

“We’re giving one lucky student the chance to be Junior Mayor and 14 others the chance to be Junior Councillors,” Cr Fowler said.

“I wish there had been a competition like this when I was growing up. It’s a fantastic opportunity for our young residents.”

To enter the competition, students need to outline two things they would do to make the City of Penrith a better place to live, if they were Mayor.

Entries must fit on one A4 piece of paper, or be an audio visual file. They can be a story, poem, an artwork or comic strip.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the entries,” Cr Fowler said.

“We’re always looking for good advice from the community – no matter the age of residents.” Entries must be submitted by Friday 30 May 2014.

The winning Junior Mayor and Junior Councillors need to be available to attend introductory meetings at Council’s Civic Centre on Monday 16 June and Monday 14 July 2014. The mock Council meeting will be held on Monday 11 August 2014.

True Leaders Following on from my last article about leadership, we ought to recognise that there is something very wrong with our world when we draw the focus towards political leadership.

We live in a desperate world, a world where our democratic systems are failing the vulnerable, where Liberal Democracy and the dream for every citizen to make their own future has dimmed under the capitalist mindset. We are no longer a welfare state that protected the underprivileged and took responsibility to advocate with honesty and integrity, what was best for its people and where unions were a positive balance that negotiated the best conditions for workers.

At a global level, this is a desperate world we live in. We live in a world where 1 in 7 human beings are going hungry, that’s 925 million people and 50% of the global population who are living on less than $2.50 per day. Contrast this reality with nations like Australia which throws 4 and a half million tonnes of food away every year (7.8Billion dollars) and where the annual wastage of the USA alone is 40 million tonnes which could end world poverty instantly. We need honest and true leaders today.

In the New Testament letter of St Matthew, Jesus speaks these words about leadership: Matthew 11:29 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

Good leaders bind themselves to the needs of others like the yoke Jesus mentions, they help the poor and vulnerable because their hearts want to serve others and because they see equal value in all human beings. Jesus is the quintessential leader because he shows his love for people by giving over his life so they may have life to the full. Life to the full is very different to consumerism, because it speaks deeply to the lost and empty heart which can’t find peace in the consumer world, but finds fulfilment and joy in and through a relationship with this great

This year’s football season in the Nepean marks the start of a new era in officiating for one of the largest organised recreational sports in our community, with the Nepean Referees Group (NRG) taking over responsibility for refereeing football in the district. Their 100th referee was signed up a few weeks ago and their active recruiting drive adds confidence that they will surpass 150 registered referees by the season’s end.

“We are really excited and thankful for the opportunity to referee football at the grassroots level for our 32 affiliated clubs in the Nepean district. We’ve been training solidly during the pre-season and without the NRG at the helm I don’t think we would have this opportunity presented to us.” said new NRG recruits Reagan Chapman and Luke Hammond.

Jim Warburton, a senior NRG referee noted that even though the wet weather conditions were playing havoc with the start of the football season’s schedule, the NRG was able to supply 100% coverage for the football matches played over the first weekend of the regular season. “This is a significant milestone for the NRG” Jim said.

Community Needs More Detail on Airport Now that a decision to build Sydney’s second airport at Badgerys Creek has been announced, we wait for more detailed plans to be revealed.

Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said that Council had made numerous calls for details on the range and scope of the airport to be revealed so that proper planning for infrastructure could be started in earnest.

“Council conducted a community opinion survey recently and found 7 out of 10 local residents indicated that Penrith would be better off with the development of the airport at Badgerys Creek,” Cr Fowler said.

“Council has consistently called for more information on the second Sydney airport proposal and these results are indicative of a community which is awaiting this information.”

Prime Minister Tony Abbott last month announced more than $3 billion will be spent on roads in Western Sydney to support the city’s second airport, and that is a good start,” Cr Fowler said.

“There will undoubtedly be economic benefits from the airport, but those benefits must accrue to the local community as well as the region and NSW,” he said.

“In order for the benefits to flow to the people of Penrith, proper infrastructure provision must be made to support the airport and Western Sydney.

“There will also be social and environmental impacts and these also need to be addressed.”

Cr Fowler said that when more detail on the Badgerys Creek airport and its associated infrastructure is released, Council will be able to inform and engage further with our community.

In attendance were Mayor Ross Fowler OAM, Fiona Scott MP Member for Lindsay, Clr Jim Aitken OAM and Clr Bernard Bratusa.

A number of discussion points were raised, questions answered and items documented for further investigation and response by the relevant parties.

Preaching: Inspiring People in their Discipleship The word “preaching” conjures up negative feelings for many people. We often say we are being “preached at” when someone speaks to us in an authoritative or supercilious manner, making us feel small and unimportant.

Preaching is popularly associated with long-winded and boring diatribes which recite a litany of things we shouldn’t be doing, highlighting our inadequacies and urging us to do better. In short, we can say confidently that preaching gets pretty bad press. This is unhelpful for those of us for whom preaching is a significant part of our lives!

But preaching doesn’t have to be long-winded, boring or patronising. In fact, it ought to be quite the opposite! Preaching ought to be interesting and engaging, seeking to inspire those who hear it so that they will be encouraged in their lives as disciples of Jesus. There is nothing less likely to inspire people to live more like Jesus than preaching which insults them or sends them to sleep!

Of course, preaching is never done in isolation from the scriptures in which God is present. Likewise, scripture is not so meaningful or fruitful isolated from interpretation. What is often known as a sermon is called a homily in the Catholic tradition and its purpose is to “break open the word.” This means that the homily, usually delivered by an ordained minister, makes the scriptures meaningful to those hearing them, giving them the inspiration and ability to apply the Word of God to their day-today living.

At a Sunday Mass those present will hear a great deal of scripture. The first half of a Catholic Mass begins with a reading from the Old Testament, then moves to one of the beautiful Psalms, followed by a reading from one of the letters in the New Testament and concludes with a reading from one of the four Gospels. If there were no homily then those present at the Mass may well enjoy the beautiful words but miss the opportunity to allow those words of God to bear fruit to their fullest extent in their Christian living.

So preaching is not something to baulk at or fear. Certainly, some homilies are challenging and may cause us, (including the one delivering it!), to feel some discomfort as we realise our shortcomings as Christian disciples and that we are, indeed, sinners in need of God’s merciful love. But then, if we are never

asked to face up to our faults, what motivation have we to correct them? A skilled homilist will never focus solely on the negative but will always balance it with the positive message of Jesus, inspiring us to more fully embrace the salvation and joy that he offers. If people feel so inspired then the preacher will have done his job well.

Doll And Bear And Collectables Show The Penrith Dolls, Bears , Craft and Collectables Show - one of the most successful Doll and Bear shows in Australia - is being held again Sunday 29 June 2014. The venue is the Pavilion at Panthers World of Entertainment, Mulgoa Road, Penrith.

This is one of the most successful Doll and Bear shows in Australia, now in its 16th Year. The show provides a great day out for everyone.

Features include collectable, porcelain and reborn dolls, teddy bears, exquisite handmade craft, doll houses, doll furniture, miniatures, books, scrapbooking, doll repairs, beads, patterns, buttons, laces and material, doll wigs, millinery, and supplies to make your own dolls and bears.

A feature of the show is the famous doll & bear competition, staged by Val Newman and her team. The judges give their time and knowledge to award the talented doll and bear makers each year.

Members of the NSW Doll Collectors’ Club manage the Valuations Table. You can bring along your childhood doll or bear and find out the history and the value of your treasured possession for a gold coin donation.

When the doors open at 10am there is always a line of enthusiastic buyers ready to hit the stalls and be first to buy the pick of the handmade items for sale.

One of the highlights for this year’s show will be a workshop conducted by International Award Winning Doll Artist, Catherine Mather. This workshop - Millinery for Fashion Dolls – will be on Sunday commencing at 12:30pm. Students will have the opportunity to complete either a Victorian antique style riding top hat or Steam Punk inspired top hat to fit a 16� to 18� fashion doll.

Proceeds from this show go to supporting Zonta Service Projects which are focussed on initiating and supporting programs for women in the areas of health, welfare, educational opportunities, economic and professional status.

Raffle tickets will be available at the door for $2 each. All proceeds of the raffle will support the Leukaemia Foundation.

Prizes include a dressed handmade porcelain doll, an antique doll, a handmade quilt and a handmade bear.

Soul Matters

Recently I joined a group from our church community who did a backyard blitz on a home in Yellow Rock that was affected by the bush fires. After 10 hours of hard yakka restoring gardens and building a retaining wall for relative strangers, our souls were dancing! We enjoyed the peace that comes when you know that there is nothing better you could have done with your time. We felt alive and happy. Why? This little story prompts a question about how we find happiness and fulfilment or a true sense of wellbeing. We can all identify things that we enjoy doing, like having a cold beer after hard work, physical exercise, chatting with friends, or achieving something. But there is a deeper happiness and sense of wellbeing that can be found in a deeper idea about how human beings tick.

The Bible teaches that we are made in the image of God. This doesn’t mean that we can be God, but that we are made with the potential to express God’s life, or genuine love. I’m not referring to our often shallow ideas about love, but the sacrificing of ourself, our time, and what we own for the wellbeing of others. I mean the sort of love a mother expresses to protect and care for her baby. And the sort of love profoundly expressed when Jesus Christ sacrificed his life to save us from the judgment hovering over us because of our sins.

When we love at all, we are expressing a part of God’s image.

The more genuinely we express love, the more we feel the inner wellbeing of doing that for which we were made. We are in

our skin. That’s why we feel happy and more complete when we selflessly contribute to the wellbeing of others. Our soul experiences the rightness, purity and nobility of it because it is consistent with our DNA – the image of God. We come alive like a fish that has been stranded on land and finally finds its way back to water. Our soul breathes, because like fish were made for water, we were made to express God’s life through genuine love.

We hit a snag here because love doesn’t come naturally to us.

In fact our natural bent is selfish and at odds with God’s image.

To experience a dancing soul and to please God we must change and learn to genuinely love. And it is for this reason that Jesus Christ calls us to follow him.

New Animation Depicts Future Nepean River Green Bridge Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith invites community members to view a new animation showing the future Nepean River Green Bridge at Penrith which aims to improve safety and access for pedestrians and cyclists in the area.

Frequently I write this article based on what I’ve been talking with parents about during the month. This month, I have been talking a lot about some of the most basic parenting tools for your toolkit which are also highly effective. They all come from the Triple P parenting group.

Tool number 1 Remind your children of ‘what to do’ rather than ‘what not to do’. Instead of saying “don’t run”, say “walk”. Instead of saying “don’t hit”, say “hands to self”.

When you use the negative, ie, “run”, “hit”, children don’t hear the “don’t”, they just hear “run” and “hit”.

Tool number 2 Descriptive praise is very powerful. Saying ‘good boy/girl’ makes your kids praise junkies. They love it, but they never quite understand what they’ve done well. Descriptive praise tells children what they are doing well.

Examples, “thanks for picking up your socks, and putting them in the wash basket, that helps me out heaps”, “I really like how you kept going on that task until you got it just the way you wanted it”, You thought really carefully about that before you did it, I admire that”.

Tool number 3 The more attention you pay to children’s behaviours, the more of them they will do. This is based on 40 years of research, it’s not earth mother or hippie-la-la stuff. So, if you pay a lot of attention to your child’s negative behaviours, what do you think will happen? Yes, they will do more of them. Think about it – you would hate being reminded of all of the times you stuff up – doesn’t make you feel good about yourself does it?

Choose one of your child’s behaviours that drives you bonkers.

Got it? OK, now think of the opposite behaviour. Now start paying more attention to the opposite behaviour (the positive one) with descriptive praise.

An example, if your child speaks too loudly, then instead of rousing on him for being too loud, give him descriptive praise every time he speaks quietly.

Tool number 4 If you call your child ‘naughty’ often enough, he or she will prove you right. And that goes for any other negative name that you call your child – clumsy, hopeless, lazy, etc.

Words are powerful, especially when they are coming from you. Children internalise the negatives we say to them or call them. Say them often enough, and you are digging a pit of shame for your child so deep and so wide, it will take them a lifetime to crawl out of it. Shaming a child causes mental health problems later in life.

Super Nanny did parenting a great disservice. Get rid of that ‘naughty’ corner/chair/mat. Do it right now!!! Call it a ‘calm down zone’ or ‘chill-out chair’. Be creative but make it positive.

Remove ‘naughty’ and ‘bad’ from your vocabulary. And now for your challenge…Put these 4 tools into action at your place, and see how things change for the better.

Staying Hydrated With the onset of winter it is easy to forget that our body still needs to be hydrated. Maybe you do not feel hot and thirsty however your body consistently requires water to maintain health, no matter what the season. Exposure to heaters such as air conditioners, gas, oil, electric and wood heaters has a very drying effect on the body. The moisture lost needs to be replaced.

The human body is approximately 60% water however this varies depending on age, sex, adiposity & hydration level.

Your organs, muscles, ligaments, tendons and joints all need water to function properly. Water keeps your skin supple, helps to maintain correct mineral and electrolyte balance, helps to prevent hair from drying and splitting & helps to maintain the acid/alkaline balance in your body. Your blood is made up of approximately 60% water.

Once you start to feel thirsty, you have already lost around 2-3% of your body’s water. Mental performance and physical coordination start to become impaired before thirst kicks in, typically around 1% dehydration. It is quite possible that if you are feeling a bit light headed or you are just not thinking clearly, you may be dehydrated.

Water –structured water, filtered water, alkaline water etc. drinking water, whole house systems -the choices are endless – make sure you do your research. Whatever you decide, remember you need to stay hydrated.

It seems that we are programmed to remember the times people have hurt us or done the ‘wrong’ thing by us rather than the many times that we have enjoyed their company. We then go on and ‘demonize’ people - gossiping that they have no good in them at all.

In truth none of us are ‘all good’ and none of us are ‘all bad’ Instead of being all white or all black, we are grey - a mixture of getting it right with others and also hurting those we love as well. We take the high moral ground and cut these people out of our life. And if it happens to be a family member, this rift might not be able to fixed in one’s life time. Further it has repercussions on other’s in the family who are not directly involved.

In truth we humans are not very good at loving. So a challenge to each of us to make the world a better place is to only say things about others that we are prepared to say to their face. A wise person passed this onto me as a guideline line to use when speaking about others.

1. Is what you are going to say about the person true?

2. Is what you are going to say about the other necessary to say?

3. Is what you are going to say about the other kind?

If you can answer yes to these three questions, then speak about the other person. If what you are going to say doesn’t reach this criteria, then safe guard your integrity and the relationship with the other, and make the world a kinder, gentler, forgiving place and keep your mouth closed.

WHAT’S COOKING Mixed Berry Pancakes

Mothers Day Edition

Easy • Makes 8 • Time 40 Mins

Ingredients • 1 cup self-raising flour • 1 egg • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk • 40g butter • 200g frozen mixed berries • 1 cup maple syrup • 1 vanilla bean, split • Mixed berries, extra, to serve

Method 1. Place the flour in a large bowl and make a well in the centre. Add the egg and buttermilk and stir until well combined. Set aside for 30 minutes to rest.

2. Melt half the butter in a large non-stick frying pan over medium heat.

Spoon 1/4 cup (60ml) of pancake mixture into the pan and sprinkle with mixed berries. Cook for 1 minute or until bubbles appear on the surface and pancakes are golden underneath. Turn and cook for 1 minute or until golden underneath. Transfer to a plate and cover with foil. Repeat with remaining batter and mixed berries, greasing pan between each batch.

3. Place the maple syrup in a small saucepan. Use a small, sharp knife to scrape the vanilla seeds into the maple syrup and add the bean. Place over low heat and cook, stirring, for 2 minutes or until heated through.

Columbia – South America Columbian coffee is renowned world wide for its quality and flavour and is one of the few origin coffees that is sold under its own name. The most important plantations are Medellin, Armenia and Manizales.

Description

Ingredients • 2 cups self-raising flour • 1 tablespoon caster sugar • Pinch of salt • 60g butter, chilled, chopped

• 3/4 cup buttermilk • Extra buttermilk, for brushing • Raspberry jam and whipped cream, to serve

Method 1. Preheat oven to 220°C/200°C fan-forced. Line a baking tray with baking paper. Position oven rack in the top half of oven.

2. Sift flour, sugar and salt into a bowl. Add butter. Using fingertips, rub butter into flour mixture until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.

3. Make a well in centre of mixture. Add buttermilk. Using a flatbladed knife, stir until a sticky dough forms. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead gently until just smooth.

4. Using a lightly floured rolling pin, gently roll dough out until 2cm thick. Using a 6cm round cutter, cut out scones. Press leftover dough together. Repeat to make 12 scones.

5. Place scones, just touching, on prepared tray. Brush with buttermilk.

Bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until golden and hollow when tapped on top. Serve with jam and cream.

The mods and rockers answering the best of 1960s British Style The Lindy Charm School for Girls and the Gallery have teamed up again to bring you a series of tantalizing, engaging and fun Vintage Styling Workshops to broaden your looks for 2014.. Last year we covered the 40's and 50's and now let us introduce our new hands on workshops covering the 30's and the 60's with a geographical twist.. – Shanghai Styling and London Calling.

Inspired by Will and Kate’s visit and the Queens’s Birthday celebration the Gallery has programmed a special regal styling session. Grab your Go Go Boots, shift dresses and eyeliner and take a trip back to the best of the 60s retro and on trend looks for today. The Lindy Charm School for Girls will take you on a road trip of the fashion styles, hair and makeup and how you can achieve these looks today with little or no fuss.

The mid 1950s to the early 1960s era was a time of transition.

The wholesome mindset of the early 50s was being taken over by the revolutionary attitude of the mid 60’s. Women began to show off their sexier sides while still holding on to most of their morally rigid ideals. With the introduction of shorter hairstyles, makeup increasingly emphasized the eyes. The doe-eyed look of mascara-outlined eyes with slightly elongated corners was accentuated by thickly pencilled eyebrows.

The mods and rockers were two conflicting British youth subcultures of the early to mid-1960s. The rocker subculture was centered on motorcycling, and their appearance reflected that. The mod subculture (modernist) was centered on fashion and music, and many mods rode scooters. Mods wore suits (often tailor-made) and other clean-cut outfits, and preferred 1960s music genres such as soul, rhythm and blues, ska and beat music. Mods favoured trendy, "hyper-cool" styles, a bit like the hipsters of today.

As Chrissy Keepence from the Charm school states I believe that vintage fashions, charm, etiquette, manners, poise and posture never really go out of fashion but rather are overshadowed by current trends and commercial viabilities.

I think it is the timeless elegance and romantic notions of the past we like to hang on to, as our worlds are so complex, rushed, competitive and shambolic at times.

The workshop is open to women from fourteen years and beyond, come solo and meet new friends or plan a day out with a girlfriend, mother, or daughter for an afternoon of oldschool fun. These 3 hour sessions provide simply fabulous, insightful and hands-on lessons in perfecting your vintage inspired looks and reviving the beauty, fashion and charm of women as they lived in decade’s gone by. Participants will learn is how to apply modern day make up with the tips and tricks to help you recreate vintage inspired looks in no time at all.

Time To get IN2CRICKET Cricket NSW in conjunction with Penrith Indoor Sports and Recreation Centre have developed an in2CRICKET program to showcase the fun and excitement that cricket entails.

The in2CRICKET program is Cricket Australia’s entry-level cricket program, which provides girls and boys with an introduction to cricket in a safe learning environment with focus on enjoyment and skill development. All activities are inclusive, action-packed and most importantly, fun!

Cricket NSW Development Officer and program coordinator Nicholas Toscan has grown up with the program “I was first introduced to cricket via the Milo ‘Have a Go’ program, which is now known as ‘Milo in2CRICKET’ and the fun and excitement it passes on to all participants is still present all these years later. I still have my medallion in the trophy cabinet at home!�

Boys and girls of all ages are welcome to attend and participate in this new and exciting initiative with no prior cricketing experience required.

A FREE ‘Come and Try’ session will be held on Friday the 16th of May, with the 5 week program commencing on Friday the 23rd of May to Friday the 20th of June (4pm – 5pm).

The cost is $70 per participant which also includes an in2CRICKET participant pack containing a bat, ball, hat, water bottle, plus more as well as a Sydney Thunder show-bag.
