Freight Takes Flight in Western Sydney

Submit your Community Notice on/by 10th of the month, to be included in the following edition. Notices may be edited or omitted due to space limitations. E: info@districtgazette.com.au

A Qantas plane laden with AusPost parcels was the first freight plane to take off from Western Sydney International Airport recently. The new cargo precinct is a big boost to Sydney’s aviation cargo capacity, with extensive warehousing space which will ultimately cater for up to 1.8 million tonnes of air cargo annually. Stage one of the precinct will be able to cater for up to eight wide-body freighters like 747s or 16 narrow-body domestic freighters like 737s or A321s at the same time. WSI’s cargo precinct will be utilised by Qantas Freight, Menzies Aviation, dnata Cargo, dnata Catering & Retail and Texel Air. This modern cargo hub will support businesses and strengthen supply chains as Western Sydney is connected to the world. Western Sydney International Airport’s freight operations will be joined by regular passenger services from 11:00am 25 October 2026, when Jetstar’s sold-out inaugural flight JQ362 takes off from Western Sydney bound for the Gold Coast. Western Sydney’s new 24-hour airport is the centrepiece of the Albanese Labor Government’s near $18 billion investment in Western Sydney, including the future Sydney Metro Airport rail connection and significant road upgrades to nearby Elizabeth Drive, Fifteenth Avenue and Mamre Road. This investment builds upon benefits already delivered through the recent opening of the M12 Motorway. The entire WSI project has created over 12,800 jobs, half of which have come from the local area. More than $500 million has also been invested in more than 360 Western Sydney based businesses during major construction works at WSI, including local tradies and construction companies, caterers, and security guards. “Testing at the freight precinct is now complete, and now Western Sydney International Airport is operational and welcoming freight flights. “Our first flights have arrived and are being packed and readied for departure as we speak. “It’s exciting progress as we gear up to seeing passenger flights commence on October 25” said Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King. “The growth and demand for parcel delivery from Australia Post is continuing to grow and it’s important the infrastructure is there to support that. “Australia Post is a trusted national service that keeps our economy moving and the country connected” said Minister for Communications Anika Wells MP. “Western Sydney Airport gives freight and logistics operators the round-the-clock capacity they need in one of Australia’s fastest growing regions. “Combined with the Aerotropolis, it will mean manufacturers and exporters can move goods from factory floors to aircrafts in hours, not days - creating faster, more resilient supply chains and helping Australian businesses to compete in global markets. “This is how we build industrial capability, attract investment and cement Western Sydney as a major hub for industry, logistics and advanced manufacturing” said Minister for Industry Senator Tim Ayres. r Image/Article: Catherine King MP

Lemonade with Heart Two young Glenmore Park residents are proving age is no barrier to making a difference, with their driveway lemonade stand raising more than $1,000 for charities and community organisations. Maximus, 11, and Madeleine, 8, operate the Glenmore Park Lemonade Stand from their home in Dillwynia Drive, selling homemade lemonade, fresh eggs from their chickens, lolly bags and other seasonal treats. The venture began in early 2025, when the siblings sold unwanted belongings outside their home before deciding to try something different. “At our very first stand, we made about $70,” Maximus said. “After that, we decided instead of just keeping the money, we wanted to use our lemonade stand to help other people too.” By January 2026, their first five stands had raised more than $1,000 for causes including the Bubbler Project at Maximus’s former school, Sydney Children’s Hospital, Gateway Family Services, WIRES and smaller community organisations. The stand has also attracted generous support from residents and local businesses. Ray White Glenmore Park donated $100, while Lolliland supplied a large box of lollies to assist the fundraising. “Lots of people tell us to ‘keep the change’, and some people have even donated money without buying anything because they just wanted to help,” Madeleine said. Their efforts have been recognised through certificates and handwritten letters, including one from Member for Badgerys Creek Tanya Davies. The treasured messages are displayed on the family’s fridge or framed by their mother. The siblings continue to expand their offerings. Madeleine has grown and sold sunflowers measuring more than three metres tall, while frozen lemonade pops proved popular during summer. Their fresh eggs frequently sell out before lunchtime. After a quieter winter, Maximus and Madeleine are preparing to reopen their stand, with dates determined by the weather and announced through their Facebook page. They are also experimenting with butterfly pea tea to create naturally coloured purplepink lemonade. The children take responsibility for pricing products, creating signs, setting up, handling money and speaking with customers, with their mother nearby when “extra Mum help” is required. “We like knowing that even though we aren’t adults, we can do something to help somebody else who needs it,” Maximus said. The siblings thanked everyone who has purchased products, donated, shared their posts or simply stopped to say hello. “Mostly, we just want to keep helping people by raising money for causes we care about, having fun and meeting new people,” Madeleine said. Follow the Glenmore Park Lemonade Stand on Facebook for its next opening date. r Maximus and Madeleine at their Glenmore Park Lemonade Stand | Image: Erika La Praik. Article: Tanya Nellestein

Four Years of Community Trust for Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital is celebrating an incredible milestone, after being named Outstanding Pet Care at the 2026 Penrith Local Business Awards for the fourth consecutive year. For owner and veterinarian Dr. Camille Brandt, the recognition is particularly meaningful because it begins with the support of clients who nominate the practice before finalists are assessed against a rigorous set of judging criteria by the awards committee. “To know that our community continues to support and believe in what we do is incredibly humbling,” Dr. Camille said. “This award belongs to every member of our team, whose compassion, dedication and commitment make a difference to the lives of pets and their families every single day.” As a proudly family-owned and independent veterinary hospital, Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital has earned a reputation for personalised care, honest advice and treating every patient as though they were one of the family. Since relocating to its purpose-built hospital in 2019, the practice has continued to grow while maintaining the welcoming, countrystyle atmosphere that clients value. The award recognises the dedication of the entire team, whose commitment extends beyond consultations and surgery to include puppy preschool, community education and outreach programs that promote responsible pet ownership and improve animal welfare. Winning the Outstanding Pet Care Award for a fourth consecutive year is a remarkable achievement and a reflection of the trust the Penrith community has placed in Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. The team sincerely thanks every client who has supported, nominated and voted for the practice and looks forward to continuing to provide exceptional care for local pets and their families for many years to come.

National Meals on Wheels Day Celebrated

National Meals on Wheels Day was celebrated on Wednesday 26 August 2026, which saw communities across Australia including Nepean Food Services recognise the extraordinary impact of Meals on Wheels in delivering not only essential nutrition, but also connection, dignity and care to older Australians and people in need. National Meals on Wheels Day shines a light on the thousands of volunteers, staff and supporters who form a nationwide movement of care that has supported communities for more than 70 years. Chair of Meals on Wheels™ Australia, Paul Sadler, said the day was an opportunity to acknowledge the enduring importance of human connection in community care. “Meals on Wheels is one of Australia’s most trusted and enduring community services, but at its heart it is something even more powerful, it is neighbours caring for neighbours,” Mr Sadler said. “Every meal delivered represents more than nutrition. It is a check-in, a conversation and a moment of connection that can quite literally change someone’s day, and sometimes their life.” Mr Sadler said for over seven decades volunteers remain the backbone of the organisation and a vital part of Australia’s social fabric. “They are not simply delivering meals, they are delivering reassurance, dignity and connection.” At the recent National Conference in Adelaide, Moira Were AM, Mayor of the City of Onkaparinga and Civic and Social Impact Leader, spoke powerfully about the role of community as a practice and care as a movement. “Community is only as strong as the care that pumps through it,” Ms Were said. Addressing the growing issue of social isolation, she noted, “Loneliness isn’t a choice; it’s a public health issue. It kills quietly, often in the houses you or I drive by every day.” She said Meals on Wheels cannot be replicated by technology or artificial intelligence. Locally, Ditte Kozak, General Manager of Nepean Food Services in Regentville, said the service continues to play a vital role in supporting the local community. “At Nepean Food Services, we see every day how important these small moments of connection are for our clients and volunteers.” National Meals on Wheels Day was a chance to reflect on the essential role of human connection in building healthier, more resilient communities.

A New Chapter for Retirement Living in the Heart of Oran Park As Oran Park continues to grow, a new generation of residents is helping shape what the area will look like in the coming years. Among them will be older Australians looking to stay close to the places, people and lifestyle they love. The Saxon, a new community being developed near Oran Park Town Centre, is bringing an innovative approach to retirement living. It combines independence with connection and sophisticated community living with the convenience of having everything close by. “The Saxon is an important development for Oran Park because it recognises that retirement living needs to evolve alongside the communities it serves,” says Tim Grover, National Sales Director. “It’s not simply about providing somewhere to live; it’s about creating a place where people can remain connected to their community while enjoying an active lifestyle.” At the heart of The Saxon is a collection of shared spaces designed to encourage residents to come together. A dedicated concierge provides a warm welcome in the grand entrance hall, while the club lounge offers a relaxed setting for catching up with neighbours over a coffee, a game of billiards or a drink at the stylish bar. There’s also an elegant wine room, boutique cinema and a rooftop garden. The choice extends to the residences themselves, with thoughtfully designed apartments and luxurious Signature Collection residences. Residents can choose a home that reflects their lifestyle and what matters most to them. “The Saxon is where retirement living is heading,” Tim says. “It’s contemporary, connected and designed around how people want to live today.” On Thursday 24 September, from 2pm, The Saxon is holding a launch event with a celebrity guest speaker, at the Oran Park Hotel, 81 Central Avenue. Dance, Bond, and Connect A new kind of fitness class has arrived in Glenmore Park. One where the babies come along for the ride, quite literally. Baby & Me Beats, launched in July 2026 by local mum and Kamilaroi woman Nikitah Smith, is a babywearing dance class designed to help parents stay active, bond with their babies, and connect with other families in their community. Classes are held every Monday at 11:30am at Floribunda Community Centre during the school term, and the response from local families has been warmly enthusiastic. “I launched Baby & Me Beats to bring parents together in a fun, welcoming environment where they can stay active, bond with their babies, and build connections with other local families,” says Nikitah. “It was created to help parents prioritise their own wellbeing without missing out on precious bonding time with baby.” The idea grew from Nikitah’s own experience of early motherhood after welcoming her son Ashton. Navigating that tender and sometimes isolating season of life inspired her to create something that wove together movement, music, and genuine social connection. Each class features easy-to-follow dance routines set to popular music, all performed while safely babywearing, along with warm-ups, cool-downs, and plenty of time for parents to chat and connect after class. Nikitah is quick to reassure anyone who might feel hesitant, no dance experience or fitness background is required. “The focus is on having fun rather than getting the steps perfect, so everyone feels welcome regardless of fitness or dance experience,” she says. The results speak for themselves. “The best part is seeing parents leave smiling and feeling more confident than when they arrived,” Nikitah shares. “Watching friendships form, seeing babies happily snuggled in their carriers, it’s incredibly rewarding.” For Nikitah, Baby & Me Beats is about something larger than a weekly class. As a proud Kamilaroi woman living and working on Dharug Country, community sits at the heart of everything she does. “My goal is for Baby & Me Beats to be more than just a dance class. It’s a place where parents can feel supported, make lasting friendships, and create special memories with their little ones. Everyone is welcome.” Bookings can be made online at www.babyandmebeats.com with casual spots available when spaces permit. Families are encouraged to come along and give it a try.

Held in the outdoor car park of HomeCo, the markets aim to provide a platform for local makers, creators and small business operators to connect with the community. Eat Shop Love’s Debbie Brown said the markets could accommodate up to 50 stalls, with organisers hoping to reach that capacity as the event continues to grow. “We look forward to the market achieving this as it grows,” Debbie said.

Visitors can browse a range of handmade, artisan and boutique products, as well as discover unique services offered by local and small business operators.

The markets are held on the last Sunday of each month from 9:00am to 2:00pm, as well as on the first Friday night of each month from 4:00pm to 8:00pm. FAITH - FOOTHILLS CHURCH Article Written + Submitted by: Pastor Paul Marshall W: www.foothillschurch.com.au A: Junction Factory Rd & Loftus St, Regentville Service Times: Sundays 9.30am

Where to Stand When Everything is Moving Have you ever felt that everything in your life is shifting and there is nothing solid to hold onto? As I write, dementia is taking my mum away. This shifting sand calls for something solid to stand on. Recently, in PNG, a boat accident left 27 people (including 19 children) drowned. As I reflected on the fact that five whole families were wiped out, it left me reaching for something solid to stand on. I’m about to visit a woman in Nepean Hospital facing an operation to remove a tumour, with a real risk of permanent damage to her health. One month she is fine; the next, her hearing is going, and they find the tumour. Shifting sands. Sometimes we are lucky enough to develop lifelong friendships. But even our closest relationships can change. The love of our life can betray us, best friends can become distant, and even children and their parents can become hostile towards each other. Someone I know was flying high financially, but shifts in the stock market and interest rates have her now struggling to make ends meet. This all sounds a bit grim, but I truly believe that the world is a wonderful place, filled with wonderful things as gifts for us to enjoy. There is love, beauty, and things to delight us, like good food and a good Panthers victory (apologies if you support another team). But my point is that life can sometimes feel as if it is shifting beneath our feet, and we need something that isn’t moving to hang onto. In the same way, if we were in the Nepean River in flood, unless we find a rock to stand on, we will be swept away by the flow of the river. For me, that solid rock is God. The Bible teaches that God is unchanging in his love for us and in his power to help us; an anchor for our souls when life is like shifting sands. This has been my experience. What is your solid rock?

FAITH – GRACE WEST ANGLICAN CHURCH Article Written + Submitted by: Senior Minister Christopher Braga P: 4733 1635 A: 16 William Howell Drive, Glenmore Park W: www.gracewest.church Service Times: Sundays @ 8.30am, 10.30am and 6pm. Plus activities for adults + young people right throughout the week.

The Justice We Crave There’s something very satisfying about the end of Die Hard 1. After all the explosions and gunfire, the evil Hans Gruber finally gets what’s coming to him. He reaches for Holly’s watch, loses his grip, and falls from the roof of Nakatomi Plaza. Justice. It’s a universal thing, justice. We all seem to have a strong sense of it. We want the bad guy caught. We want people held accountable. We want victims to be vindicated. When justice doesn’t happen, we instinctively know that something is wrong. The Bible says that this instinct isn’t accidental. God is a God of justice, and he made us to know right from wrong. He’s even given governments the responsibility of punishing wrongdoing and protecting what is good. That’s part of why we have police, courts and laws. Governments don’t always get it right, but the responsibility to pursue justice comes from God. And the Bible says that one day God himself will bring perfect justice. Nothing will be missed. Every wrong will be dealt with. Every person will stand before him. That sounds like good news, until you realise that we’re not spectators in the courtroom. We are the perpetrators! We have all failed to live by God’s good standards. We have all done things we shouldn’t have done and neglected things we should have done. So what we really need is mercy. And that is why Jesus matters. Through Jesus, God graciously offers forgiveness to people like us who need it so badly.

Plant a Tree for Father’s Day

If you’re looking for something to gift Dad for Father’s Day, Penrith City Council’s beloved Trees for Dad community event returns for its eighth year on Sunday 6 September. Everyone is invited to plant a tree in honour and celebration of their dad, grandfather, uncle or father figure at Berkshire Park Recreation Ground in Berkshire Park. The event is divided into 30-minute sessions, with the first session starting at 8:30am and the last at 12:00pm. Registrations are essential to ensure that enough trees will be available to plant on the day. Register at penrith.city/events Penrith Mayor Todd Carney said he was excited to see the return of the popular event after Trees for Mum welcomed over 660 participants earlier this year. “Trees for Mum and Trees for Dad are two very important events our community looks forward to every year. We were really impressed by the turnout for Trees for Mum in May and we’re looking forward to seeing new and familiar faces at our next Father’s Day tree planting,” Cr Carney said. “Planting a tree is such a simple gesture to honour your dad, grandfather, uncle or a father figure in your life and it can be a very positive and meaningful experience to share with family and friends on Father’s Day. “Every year, the Bushcare team is touched by the beautiful stories participants share with them about why they come to celebrate and honour their mum and dad, and I hope that Trees for Dad continues to provide such a meaningful space. “Trees for Dad is not only a great way to gift Dad something special, but it’s an opportunity to learn about our local environment and help restore our endangered bushland by planting native trees or shrubs.” Participants are encouraged to wear closed-toe shoes and a hat. Sunscreen will be available on the day. Council’s Nursery proudly provides the native trees and shrubs available for planting on-site. Is Core Strengthening Good for Lower Back Pain? From previous articles, you’ve probably gleaned that tight/ inflamed lower back muscles and connective tissue are the cause of most chronic back pain, either directly or indirectly. If you’ve suffered from chronic back pain, then you may have come across the conventional wisdom which: 1. attributes ‘poor core strength’ as a cause of back pain … and 2. promotes ‘core strengthening as the solution’. I regularly see clients who have come in with long-standing ‘chronic’ back pain, many of whom have been doing prescribed core-strengthening exercises religiously. In some cases, these exercises helped for a while; in others, they did not. Either way, their back pain has remained. This is because the core-strength theory is fundamentally flawed. Here’s why: Although an inflamed back can be due to many causes, let’s look at an acute injury such as a ruptured disc. When a person has such an injury to the spine, the back muscles and connective tissue swell, become inflamed, and lock up around the injury. It’s a standard protective mechanism that’s described in any standard medical text. Once the muscles become inflamed and tighten, in most cases (unless work is done to de-inflame and lengthen the muscles), they’ll remain tight and inflamed. If disc

protrusion exists, it will likely remain protruded. Doing strength work will build muscle but will also lead to muscles shortening and reduced range of motion unless regular stretching of the same muscles occurs. Doing religious corestrengthening exercises will tighten the core muscles. In the case of a back injury involving a slipped disc, where the back is already tight and maintaining a disc in the protruded position, this is exactly the last thing one should normally do. Key to remediating this type of back injury is to do the following: 1. Stop doing core-strengthening exercises for now. 2. Get remedial deep-tissue therapy to de-inflame/lengthen the muscles. 3. Perform daily core stretching. 4. Start core strengthening only once the injured disc tissue has healed. 5. Carry out core strengthening only with concurrent core stretching to guard against re-injury. If you have a problem with a back injury, why not come and talk to us at BHW – see our ad for contact details.

Our pets are cherished members of the family, providing companionship, comfort and unconditional love. While sharing our lives with animals brings countless benefits, it’s also important to understand that some diseases can be passed between animals and people. These are known as zoonotic diseases. The good news is that the risk of catching a zoonotic disease from a well-cared-for pet is generally very low. With regular veterinary care, good hygiene and a few simple precautions, you can help keep both your family and your pets healthy. One of the most common zoonotic concerns is intestinal worms, including roundworms, hookworms and tapeworms. These parasites can be transmitted through contaminated soil, water or contact with infected animals. While infections in people are uncommon, they can cause stomach upset, skin irritation and other health problems. Keeping your pet on a regular worming program is one of the simplest and most effective ways to reduce this risk. Another condition people often hear about is ringworm. Despite its name, ringworm isn’t caused by a worm at all. It’s a fungal infection that affects the skin, producing red, itchy, circular patches in both animals and people. It spreads through direct contact with infected animals or contaminated environments. If your pet develops areas of hair loss or skin lesions, it’s important to have them examined by your veterinarian promptly.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease spread through the urine of infected animals, including rodents and wildlife. People and pets can become infected through contaminated water or soil, particularly if bacteria enter the body through cuts or the eyes, nose or mouth. Vaccination is available for dogs and plays an important role in reducing the risk of this potentially serious disease. Some skin conditions can also be passed between pets and people. Sarcoptic mange, often called scabies, is caused by microscopic mites that burrow into the skin, leading to intense itching. Prompt veterinary treatment not only helps your pet recover but also reduces the chance of the mites spreading to other animals or family members. Cat owners should also be aware of Cat Scratch Disease, a bacterial infection that can occasionally develop after a scratch or bite from an infected cat. Most cases are mild, but washing any scratches or bites thoroughly with soap and water and avoiding rough play can help minimise the risk. Another well-known zoonotic disease is toxoplasmosis; a parasite commonly associated with cats that hunt prey. Although many people have heard of it, the risk of infection from household cats is often lower than people think. Good litter tray hygiene, wearing gloves when gardening and thoroughly cooking meat all help reduce exposure. Pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems should take extra precautions and discuss any concerns with their healthcare provider. Fortunately, preventing zoonotic diseases is straightforward. Wash your hands after handling pets or cleaning up after them, dispose of pet waste appropriately, keep vaccinations and parasite prevention up to date, and schedule regular veterinary health checks. These simple measures go a long way towards protecting everyone in the household. If you have questions about parasite prevention, vaccinations or protecting your family from zoonotic diseases, speak with the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. We’re always happy to help. National Threatened Species Day The 7th of September marks an important date in Australian history. It commemorates the death of the last Tasmanian Tiger (Thylacınus cynocephalus) at Hobart Zoo on the same date in 1936. There are a few threatened, endangered and critically endangered species in the Cumberland Plains area. These animals and plants face possible extinction due to very small remaining population numbers, severe habitat loss, invasive predators and fragmentation of the ecosystems to which they belong. Some of these include the Regent Honeyeater (Anthochaera phrygia), Powerful Owl (Ninox strenua), Australian Painted-snipe (Rostratula australis), Gang Gang Cockatoo (Callocephalon fimbriatum), Cumberland Plain Land Snail (Meridolum corneovirens), Koala (Phascolarctos cinereus), Camden White Gum (Eucalyptus benthami), Nodding Geebung (persoonia nutans), Slender Heath Myrtle (Micromyrtus minutifolia), Grey-headed Flying Fox (Pteropus poliocephalus), Squirrel Glider (Petaurus norfolcensis), Swift Parrot (Lathamus discolor) and Spotted-tailed Quoll (Dasyurus maculatus). We can help many of these species by providing native food and habitat plants in our gardens or getting involved with bush care groups that help restore local ecosystems. Nature is our greatest gift. r

As another month arrives, I am once again reminded that the strength of our community is found in the people who continue showing up, working hard and supporting one another every day. Throughout our region we see businesses growing, volunteers giving generously, sporting clubs celebrating success and local organisations creating opportunities that bring people together. These stories remind us that positive change is often built through quiet persistence and a shared commitment to making our communities better. With spring just around the corner, there is a growing sense of optimism. Longer days are returning, community events are filling the calendar and families are beginning to enjoy more time outdoors. It is a wonderful reminder that every season brings fresh opportunities and new beginnings. Local newspapers play an important role in celebrating these everyday achievements. Every article shines a light on the people whose efforts strengthen our neighbourhoods and inspire those around them. They are the stories that deserve to be told. Thank you for continuing to read, support and contribute to District Gazette. Your stories help us celebrate everything that makes our local communities such vibrant and welcoming places to call home. “Nothing can dim the light that shines from within.” Maya Angelou
