Dingo Den Animal Rescue Gets Helping Hand Local charity Dingo Den Animal Rescue was recently given a much needed hand with team members from Bunnings Warehouse coming together to help install five bridges and a boardwalk on the property in Glenmore Park.

Staff from Bunnings Warehouse Bonnyrigg, Bankstown, Lidcombe, Villawood, Crossroads, Greenacre, Hoxton Park and North Penrith donated their valuable time whilst the timber and materials used in the renovation were also supplied by Bunnings with the help of Cabot’s.

Due to the current wet season, the Dingo Den property was holding a lot of water that was making it hard for both volunteers and guests to safely move around the property.

The team members from Bunnings Warehouse braved the cold, wet and rainy conditions to roll up their sleeves and successfully complete the bridges and boardwalk together over two days.

The end result looked fantastic as the wet, marshy swales of the property were now covered with bridges

Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies MP, has congratulated the Glenmore Park Cricket Club upon receiving a grant of $5,000, administered under the 2015/16 Local Sport Grant Program, to contribute to the purchase of new uniforms for the Club. “The very essence of this program created by the Baird Government is to recognise the undeniable talent and dedication emerging from local sporting organisations such as the Glenmore Park Cricket Club, whilst highlighting the importance of sport both here in NSW and right across the nation,� Tanya Davies said.

Tanya Davies was joined by Club Junior Secretary, Grant Kean, at Blue Hills Oval in Glenmore Park, where the cheque was presented. “The allocation of this grant signifies the ongoing commitment of the Baird Government in ensuring that local clubs are supported throughout their efforts in growing young athletes and therefore forging the next generation of Australian sporting representatives,� said Tanya Davies.

In particular, the $5,000 will be used by the Club to purchase new uniforms for the junior players. “This grant will assist our cricket club in purchasing all new coloured uniforms that will allow our junior players to emulate their cricketing heroes. The Glenmore Park Redbacks will be the first junior cricket club in the Penrith region to be wearing full coloured uniforms,� Grant Kean said.

Junior Secretary Kean continued, “Due to the extra funding, we expect our young cricketers to become more engaged and subsequently it will encourage more young people in the Penrith region to also get involved in the game of cricket, which is a key aspect of Australian sporting culture.�

The Glenmore Park Cricket Club are currently holding their 2016/17 club registration at the Glenmore Park Community Hall.

Take a Stand Have you heard the saying, “If you don’t take a stand for something you will fall for anything”?

This is the theme of the Bible’s book of Daniel; taking a stand for what is right. The key person in the book, Daniel and his nation have been captured and taken to the land of Babylon. Here, the Babylonian leaders work to influence Daniel and his friends to give up their faith in God and take on their unGodly values.

But Daniel and his friends will not do it. They are men of principle, men of faith in the God who has loved them and who has called them to follow Him and Him only. Daniel and his friends know this good and faithful God and they resolve to serve only Him. In one incident, the King of Babylon calls on these men to bow down and worship a golden statue that he has built. He even threatens them with being thrown into a blazing furnace if they do not bow to the statue. These men, despite this real and great threat, simply cannot do it. Even though it will mean certain death, to not take a stand would be to betray their faith in the true and living God. Bravely they say to the King, “If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and he will rescue us from your hand, O King. But even if he does not, we want you to know, O King, that we will not serve your Gods or worship the image of gold that you have set up.”

Soul Matters: Be Quiet!

I don’t mean “be quiet� rudely, like “Shut up!�

But for our souls to thrive we do need to be quiet. Yes, to shut up in the sense of not talking and getting away from others. To find patches of silence and solitude amidst the rush and noise.

This doesn’t come naturally because we have learnt to make ourselves feel better with lots of words, noise, and visual stimuli like TV, email, and social media.

These things can make us feel good, or at least distract us from what is worrying us and robbing us of happiness, without actually dealing with them. We become dependent on the noise, busyness, social media, and TV in an unhealthy way – at some point, sadly, we need it to feel okay.

To deal with what is inside us requires silence and solitude – time to listen to the cry, pain or dreams of our own hearts.

Time to focus on God and to let him speak to us about those parts of us.

Silence and solitude can be torture for some of us. Why do you think that is true? I think it is because being quiet creates a space where we can see what is really going on inside us, and we can be afraid of what we might find there!

But this challenge aside, time to be quiet is essential to our well-being.

In the Bible Jesus consistently escaped from the hustle and bustle to be quiet, and this was a key to the power and peace which characterised his life. He made time to be quiet to hear God’s words of hope and love, and to have his dreams re ignited

by God’s Spirit.

If we can harness the courage to be quiet, it will pay handsome dividends in understanding and dealing with what is happening inside us. Time being quiet will sharpen us – and even more so if we can learn to hear God’s words of love and truth to us in the midst of what we are feeling and thinking.

and a raised boardwalk through a wet area that also supplies shelter to native aquatic wildlife.

Dingo Den Animal Rescue is a registered Australian charity run by a network of volunteers across the country. Established in July 2015, the charity exists to save and better the lives of individual animals, empower wildlife carers and prevent the extinction of Australia’s vulnerable fauna and flora. The charity operates a sanctuary in Glenmore Park where volunteers can help rehabilitate Dingoes as well as take care of dingo puppies.

Amy Ready to Take on the Business World Local Amy Blackstock is a young entrepreneur at the tender age of just 11, proving that age is no barrier when it comes to starting your own business.

Amy began her business ‘Amy’s Bath Bombs’ in June this year and already has a large group of satisfied customers.

“I wanted to find a way to earn money by doing something myself. I like being creative, so I started making bath bombs for my friends and they went crazy for them” said Amy. With the help of her Mum Dee, Amy has also started her own Facebook page as a way to help promote her business to her customers. Dee is very proud of her daughter and her ability to start a business at such a young age. “She loves creating products that people like and that everyone can afford. She is constantly coming up with ways to expand her range but is always careful to make things affordable, especially seeing as her first customers were her girlfriends at school” said Dee. Amy’s business is committed to being environmentally friendly. She reuses and recycles all packaging and waste. This includes selling the jars that some of her raw products come in to recoup costs.

Amy also had the honour of being invited as a speaker to a ‘How To Start Your Own Makeup Business’ Workshop at her supplier’s showroom. Despite being the only child in attendance, Amy was able to confidently speak about her business to the many attendees.

For any budding entrepreneurs inspired by Amy, she has this advice, “Believe in yourself.

Be thankful for any help that people can give you. Listen to what your customers want.

You’ve got to be happy to go to work in your own business. Always believe that you CAN make a difference, no matter your age”.

Wanderers Star Visits Glenmore Park

The Western Sydney Wanderers’ Shannon Cole visited Blue Hills Oval last month as a special guest for Glenmore Park Football Club.

The Wanderers Defender was on hand to sign autographs, pose for photos and give encouragement awards to local junior players.

His appearance was part of a grassroots football promotion that saw each Western Sydney Wanderers player visit a different club in six of the eight football associations in the local area.

Understand Your Financial Number – What do They Mean?

I was recently discussing the Profit and Loss Statement, Balance Sheet and the Cash Flow Statement with a client’s staff member who asked me which financial statement I viewed as the most important.

I asked which one they would look at first, to which I got the answer the Profit and Loss statement. My answer was, “that’s interesting and what about the others”? I was told they wouldn’t look at these.

In my opinion all of these financial statements are important but I put more weight on the Balance Sheet and the Cash Flow statement than the Profit and Loss statement”.

Here is why I rate the Balance Sheet potentially the most important Financial Statement!

The balance sheet is a snapshot of where your business is, and how it is travelling right now. It’s derived on the formula Assets = Liabilities + Equity. The equity section and more specifically the heading year to date earnings tells you how the business is travelling right now. However it is the Asset and Liability position that holds the key to the future of your business.

The Assets and Liabilities are then broken down into current & non-current categories. Anything that is current refers to its ability to be turned into cash or paid out within 12 months. The non-current categories will take longer to convert into cash or to pay out, with accounting convention dictating that this timeframe is greater than 12 months or 1 year.

Have you heard the saying “Cash is King”?

Well I consider your cash position perhaps the most important financial indicator in your business. Unfortunately the Profit & Loss report does not tell you this, but you can extract this information from the Balance Sheet.

You see, just divide the Current Assets by your Current Liabilities. This shows you the ability of your business to pay for its current liabilities with its current assets. You will hear this calculation being referred to as your Working Capital or Current ratio. If you get a number greater than one you have a positive working capital and can pay your bills. If the ratio is less than 1 your working capital is negative and you will find paying your bills challenging. This is a must know indicator.

Continuing Our Series on Parent Traps…

Parents sometimes give instructions to children in a way that sets them up for failure. Some common problems with instructions are: • Too Many – Children can only take in so much information at once. Sometimes we give too much detail and too many steps. Little kids, and children with disorders or disabilities, can only cope with one instruction at a time.

• Too Few – We need to set our children up for success. For certain tasks, we need to give them enough information to get on with the job. Our kids usually let us know when this happens when they say “but you didn’t tell me that”.

• Too Hard – Sometimes we give instructions that are too hard for children because we have unrealistic expectations of what our kids can do for their age.

• Bad Timing – Instructions given when a child is busy playing with friends or watching his favourite TV show may be ignored.

• Too Vague – Telling a child to stop being silly doesn’t tell the child what she should be doing.

• Giving Instructions As A Question – If there is no option, don’t give an instruction as a question. For example, asking a child “would you like to hold my hand in the car park?” may be met with the reply “no thanks, mummy” and the child runs away from you.

• Long Distance – Yelling instructions across the room or from the other end of the house, frequently doesn’t get much response from a child.

• Mismatch - The parents’ body language does not match what she or he is saying. If you are laughing whilst telling a child to not do something, the child will be confused.

What To Do Instead?

Give your child clear, calm, and direct instructions in close proximity with eye contact. Tell your child what to do (for example, “sit on the lounge”), rather than what not to do (“don’t jump on the lounge”). And have realistic expectations of your children given their age and stage of development.

Local student Jamie Wilkinson is proving that you’re never too young to follow your dreams. The Year 6 student at Bethany Catholic Primary School in Glenmore Park is an aspiring writer and is the Managing Editor of The Bethany Buzz, a student newsletter idea that she had last year when in Year 5.

Jamie’s love of writing began at an early age. “She started at about 6 years of age. Jamie wrote and illustrated a lot.

Not long after, a family friend bought her a Kids National Geographic magazine subscription and it continued from there” explained Maria Wilkinson, Jamie’s mother. The Bethany Buzz is written by kids for kids and is fast becoming a successful way of engaging children through reading and writing with everything from jokes, puzzles and fun facts.

With fellow writers such as Erin Hunter, Lemony Snicket, Rick Riordan and T.Tui Sutherland amongst Jamie’s favourites, she is well on her way to becoming a successful writer in her own right. “I love writing. Heat oil in a saucepan over medium heat until hot. Add onion and cook, stirring often, for 3 minutes. Add carrot, celery and potato and cook, stirring often, for 5 minutes.

Add stock, cover and bring to the boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 15 minutes. Add chicken and pasta, partially cover and cook for 8-10 minutes or until pasta is tender.

Stir through parsley. Season to taste. Ladle soup into serving bowls and serve with wholegrain toast.

1 1/2 cups self-raising flour 1/4 cup cocoa powder 1 cup caster sugar 1 1/2 cups milk 1 1/2 cups boiling water

2 teaspoons butter, softened Pure icing sugar and double cream or ice-cream, to serve

Preheat oven to 180°C. Lightly grease an 8-cup capacity ovenproof bowl or pudding bowl.

Sift flour and 2 tablespoons cocoa into prepared bowl. Stir in 1/2 cup sugar. Add milk. Stir until well combined.

Combine remaining 1/2 cup sugar and 1 tablespoon cocoa in a small bowl. Sprinkle over surface of pudding. Gently pour boiling water over the back of a large metal spoon to cover surface of pudding. Dot with butter. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean.

Dust with icing sugar and serve with double cream or ice-cream.

One of the lectures is going to be on the use of colour both in arrangements and interior decorating and will be given by Jane Stockel an expert on the use of colour who has just arrived back from the Chelsea Garden Show in UK. Another one will be on Ikebana, which is Japanese flower arrangement along with demonstrations of how to create a flower arrangement by State representatives using floral emblems from the different Australian states.

So Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got Osteoporosis!! Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s it Really Mean?

What can you do About it?

Last month we asked whether drugs are really the answer to reduce fracture risk? This month we define osteoporosis and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the relevance to your risk of breaking a bone.

Osteoporosis is defined in terms of bone density (aka bone mass). Bone density tests measure the amount of X-rays that can pass through a bone (e.g. spine, hip or mid radius). The more X-rays that can pass through, the lower the bone density. Your BMD is then compared to the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;mean value of peak bone massâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; in normal young adult. A score of 0 means your BMD is equal to the norm for a healthy young adult. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re classed as having: 1. Osteopenia - if your bone density is decreased moderately (i.e. between 1-2.5 standard deviations) below that of normal young adult.

2. Osteoporosis - if your bone density is decreased a lot (i.e. greater than 2.5 standard deviations) below that of normal young adult We only measure bone density because it may give a clue as to bone strength and your risk of fracture. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s value is somewhat limited however because in reality many people with low bone density actually have relatively strong bones and some people with high bone density actually have weaker bones. Why? First we need to understand that there are two types of bone tissue â&#x20AC;&#x201C; compact & trabecular (see diagram 1). Both are important to a boneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s strength. Once we understand this we can see that bone strength actually depends on at least 4 different things: 1. Whether the compact bone & trabecular bone is thick or thin (how much total bone mass do you have?). Your â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;bone mineral densityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; is a measure of your bone mass.

Irrespective of your â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;bone massâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, 2. If your boneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not mineralised properly at a microscopic level, mineralisation defects reduce strength 3. Altered trabecular bone architecture (3D shape & structure) can weaken the whole bone (See diagram 2) 4. Cortical (compact) bone may be more porous (larger number &/or sized â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Swiss-cheese-likeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; holes) and thus weaker.

So people with relatively thick bones and reasonable bone density scores, could still have increased fracture risk due to microscopic mineralisation defects for example.

Many things influence the 4 â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;bone strengthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; factors above, including race, sex, age, diet, exercise, sunshine, smoking, alcohol abuse, autoimmunity, medications (eg corticosteroid use), HRT

and genes. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best to build and then maintain bone strength as we age. But even if your bone density is low there are still things that you can do to either halt further bone loss and strengthen existing bone at any age with or without increase in BMD. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll discuss some of these over the next few issues so stay tuned.

Our Kitten Adoption Program enables us to find homes for stray and unwanted kittens.

Each kitten has a health check. They have had their kitten vaccinations, been desexed, microchipped and have a product called Advocate applied, which controls fleas, intestinal worms and heartworm. We also worm them for tapeworms.

Fire Safety It’s unfortunate that time and time again we hear about the terrible fires that are destroying our local homes and sadly most of them could have been prevented by following simple steps in order to keep our homes and families safe.

Not only is it a safety concern but Legislation requires that all NSW residents must have at least one working smoke alarm installed on each level of their home.

This includes owner occupied, rental properties, relocatable homes, caravans and campervans or any other residential building where people sleep.

Statistics noted on fire.nsw.gov.au reveal that almost half of all home fires are started in the kitchen and 43% of all fire fatalities occur in winter. They recommend that a way to reduce the risk of fire occurring in your home and to surviving a house fire is being prepared.

Here is a checklist to make sure your fire safe in the home • Install an adequate number of suitable smoke alarms and have them tested regularly.

• Have a written escape plan that the family can access and practice.

• Make keys to all locked doors readily accessible in case you need to escape.

• Never leave cooking or any other open flame including candles or oil burners unattended.

• Don’t forget to clean the lint from your dryer regularly.

• Avoid smoking in bed.

• Take extra care when using heaters, electric blankets or open fires.

• Don’t overload power points.

• Keep lighters and matches away from kids and educate them that they are only to be used by responsible adults.

• Take extra care with any stored chemicals and fuels in sheds and garages and always refuel mowers, edger’s etc. when they are cold and in the open.

• If you have a gas, electric or wood BBQ always check that it is in safe working order before lighting and that it is always in the care of a responsible adult when in use.
