Driving Down The Costs Of Childcare

Families are set to save thousands of dollars a year on childcare costs thanks to the NSW Government’s unprecedented investment of up to $5 billion over the next decade to expand high quality, affordable childcare. A family with one child in fulltime childcare that benefits from the investment is expected to save up to $3,900 a year, while the equivalent family living in regional NSW with two children in childcare is expected to save up to $7,800. Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies welcomes this incredible investment being made in childcare to help transform the lives of families across the state. “Improving access to affordable and high-quality childcare will significantly improve women’s economic opportunity, ability to participate in the workforce and help families secure a brighter future” Mrs Davies said. “Women are a crucial part of this State’s success and women should be able to have access to affordable childcare and the ability to participate in the workforce.” The NSW Government’s investment will be made through the Affordable and Accessible Childcare and Economic Participation Fund, which will be established in this year’s budget. The Fund will: • Provide grants to childcare providers to expand infrastructure and establish new centres, • Target areas with limited access to childcare centres or where a shortage of childcare places poses the highest disincentive to parents returning to work, • Complement the Commonwealth’s demand-side childcare policy framework through flexible supply side funding, • Invest $775 million over the next four years, and • Trial new service models to meet the needs of modern families. Representative School Sport Fees Covered For NSW Students

Student access to representative school sport will be increased through a $1.2 million investment to fund local and state sports association affiliation fees in 2022 for every student in NSW public schools. Minister for Enterprise, Investment and Trade, Minister for Tourism and Sport and Minister for Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said the move would both reduce the financial burden on families and the administrative burden on schools.   A 2021 Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne study showed half of Australian children had participated in less organised sport and other physical activities since COVID-19, with one in three doing a lot less or no sport. Cost was one of the main reasons cited by parents for failing to re-engage with sport, Mr Ayres said. “By directly funding the sports associations we are making access to sport more equitable and inclusive, taking away cost as an obstacle for families,” Mr Ayres said. Minister for Education and Early Learning Sarah Mitchell said there was a significant administrative burden associated with collecting and handling these affiliation fees, as schools collected the funds from parents/carers and then reallocated the funds to the associations. “Under the new arrangement, students at smaller schools and schools for specific purposes that traditionally did not take part in representative sport due to the administrative burden will now able to experience the chance to play for their schools and regions,” Ms Mitchell said. “These changes align with our commitment under the Quality Time Action Plan to cut red tape in schools by 20% in low-value administrative tasks by the end of 2022.”   The Representative School Sport Pathway provides students access to representative pathways in a range of sports. Schools affiliate with their local and state sports associations and are charged fees to cover costs for the delivery of the pathway.   Ms Mitchell said the link between student wellbeing, academic success and physical activity was well known, and the department would continue to promote high-quality sport and physical activity opportunities for students.   “We want to return to pre-COVID levels of participation and uptake of sport and physical activity at school, at home and in the wider community, and this funding injection is one way we can help make that a reality.”

Council To Waive Sportsground Hire Fees For Winter Season Penrith City Council understands the challenges sporting clubs across the City are facing this winter season and will show its support by waiving sportsground hire fees for use of natural grass fields. The ongoing rainfall has disrupted the start of the 2022 winter season, with some clubs having their games postponed due to the poor weather conditions while others are yet to take the field as a result of ground closures. This move is set to benefit more than 60 local sporting clubs and associations from 13 different sporting codes who have registered for the winter 2022 season. Penrith Mayor Tricia Hitchen said she hopes Council’s decision to waive sportsground hire fees for the current sporting season will offer some financial reprieve during a frustrating time for the community. “We know that after two years of disruptions from the pandemic, our City’s club representatives and players were eager to get outdoors again but unfortunately it has been a rough start to the season due to issues beyond our control,” Cr Hitchen said. “While we are getting to as many grass fields as we can as fast as we can, the poor weather conditions have saturated many grounds making it impossible for our equipment to be safely placed on fields," she said. "Whilst every effort is being made to restore the condition of our sportsgrounds to allow them to be playable and safe, the surface at some grounds is still too wet. “We thank our community for being patient and we hope that by waiving these fees it’s one less stress for our clubs and associations to think about as they continue to reschedule fixtures and plan for their next playable games.” The latest decision to waive sportsground hire fees follows Council’s well-received move to allow free use of the City’s sportsgrounds in the 2020 and 2021 winter seasons, as well as the 20202021 summer season, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Weather permitting, Council continues to progress multiple projects at sportsgrounds, open spaces, playspaces and recreation areas as part of its vision for improved opportunities across the LGA, which were identified in our Sport and Recreation Strategy. Charting Success for Local Band Local prog rock band Anubis have tasted success the second time around, with the reissue of their debut album 230503 released worldwide recently. 230503 was first released in 2009 by the band through the German label, Just for Kicks. The reissue has seen the album enter the top 10 of the Australian Independent Charts. “We could never have dreamed in 2009 that this album could chart anywhere. It’s incredibly exciting for us. Our last album, ‘Homeless’ charted at number 4 and this album charted at number 9. It’s very humbling that we’ve got a dedicated audience” explained David Eaton, founding member of Anubis and Glenmore Park resident. The reissue of 230503 features two discs. The first includes the same songs, but with new drum tracks recorded by their drummer Steve. The second disc has live tracks from the album, recorded both here in Australia and in Europe over the last 15 years, as well as some long-lost songs that were originally cut. The artwork has been updated to reflect album’s story. “The original tracks on the old album were recorded in my garage, and some of the album was even recorded in the old Pizza Hut on Mulgoa Road where a few of us used to work! The album was recorded before we even became a proper band, and the sound quality was always a compromise. This time we have a nice studio space and some good gear, and it ended up sounding way better” he said. “The technology exists now to go back and clean up some of the amateur mistakes we made on the original album. We’re all very proud of the songs but the album wasn’t as polished as our later work, and we wanted to make it sound as good as it could” David continued. Anubis are currently working on their 7th studio album and finishing a live CD and a film from their ‘Homeless’ live show from 2021. “We had to cancel planned tours of Japan and Europe, so this will tide the audience over until we can get back over there when the new album comes out” he finished. Penola Catholic College Sports Stars in the Making Penola have made some great updates to their fitness facilities at the College, with a brand new fully equipped gymnasium. Their sporting department has had a big year of achievements in 2022 and its only July! From Year 10, Tanikah Eddie, Kayla Henderson and Lailah Perceval were all selected to represent Parramatta Diocese Secondary Schools Sports Council (PDSSSC) in the Under 16 Girls Rugby League team. Kayla was also selected for the Parramatta Eels Development squad. Jhett Sydir in Year 10 who was selected for the NSW Combined Catholic Colleges (CCC) U15 Rugby League Team, has also been selected for the Combined Catholic Colleges (CCC) Touch Football Team. From Year 11, Bradley McCarthy the recipient of the Penrith Valley Sports Foundation Junior Sports Star Award has been selected for the Combined Catholic Colleges (CCC) Softball team. At the recent NSW Combined Catholic Colleges (CCC) Cross Country at Sydney Motorsport Park, four students did extremely well. Kai Cullens, Adrian Jones, Torrance McLean, and Kim Tran have all made it through to the NSW All Schools Championships to represent the Combined Catholic Colleges (CCC). In the pool, Maya Bailey, Isabella Bolton, and Jack Barry represented Parramatta Diocese Secondary Schools Sports Council (PDSSSC) at the Combined Catholic Colleges (CCC). Maya and Jack also made the Catholic Schools NSW Swim Team! Also in swimming, students Jack, Ava and William Barry represented Mulgoa at the MSMM Megaswim Mega Mates, a

24-hour swim raising funds for charity. The Penola Intermediate Boys Basketball team finished in 3rd place at the Parramatta Diocese Secondary Schools Sports Council PDSSSC. As well as Alyssa Troy and Breha Pearson, who made the Parramatta Diocese Secondary Schools Sports Council PDSSSC Netball team. Then to top all the sporting success off, Year 11 student Chloe Kericopolas won silver and bronze medals in the Judo National Championships in the Gold Coast. As well as being selected to attend a national training camp. Penola Catholic College is extremely proud of all their students' achievements and commitment to sport.

Peyton’s Fight Glenmore Park Mum Nichelle Ritchie has created ‘Peyton’s Fight’, a local group in support of her daughter who has a rare chromosome disorder, whilst raising awareness for people with similar conditions. Four-and-a-half-year-old Peyton Wilson has a disorder known as Chromosome 6 Ring and is one of twenty four documented cases around the world. “I felt it was time for Peyton’s story to be heard to raise awareness about what families of people with rare disorders go through living with the unknown and the types of challenges these kids face on a day-to-day basis” said Nichelle, Peyton’s Mum. “Our aim is to also fundraise for a new car which can be modified to fit a motorised wheelchair that Peyton will be getting. This will enable Peyton to be more independent when we are out so that she can live her best life” she continued. There are online auctions, raffles and competitions planned for Peyton’s Fight group. This includes a river walk scheduled for Sunday 10th July, with face painting, cake stall, craft, raffles, and a guessing competition. It is hoped that a celebration at the end of October will also take place. Details for the event will be confirmed soon. “It would be great to see people join the group. There will be opportunities to interact with members, ask questions, donate items for the auctions or to just get involved” Nichelle finished. Suffering from DVTs and Pulmonary Embolisms? Could your Iron levels be a Cause Annually, 17,000 Australians suffer venous blood clots (VTE). This article was inspired by a patient suffering iron deficiency, who’d recently been released from hospital after treatment for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and subsequent pulmonary embolism (blood-clots) in both lungs. DVT blood clots can break off and eventually lodge in the lungs causing pulmonary thromboembolism (PE) as happened in this patient. Iron-deficiency (ID) is the most common nutritional deficiency worldwide. ID is also a known risk factor for blood clotting disorders such as VTE, but this is ‘under-recognised’ and so testing for iron deficiency/anaemia isn’t routinely done in hospitalized VTE patients. The exact mechanism/s via which ID causes blood clots is still being elucidated. ID can increase platelet counts which may increase likelihood of clotting and animal studies show that platelet count in ID can be normalised by iron supplements. However, clots also occur in ID patients when platelet-counts are normal, so the reason for increased clotting in ID may be unrelated to platelet count. Apart from ID, previous studies have linked raised levels of blood-coagulation ‘factor-VIII’, to increased risk of recurring VTE and PE. Researchers suspected a link between iron and factor-VIII

blood-levels, so they studied patients with an inherited disorder of blood-vessel-formation called haemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT). Patients suffer turbulent blood flow within fragile bloodvessel walls, rendering blood-vessels prone to haemorrhage. HHT patients are also at increased risk of: 1. Blood loss and thus iron deficiency, 2. VTE The authors found that lower blood iron levels in HHT patients increased the risk of blood-clots. When iron levels were low (6 μmol/litre) patients were 2.5 times more likely to suffer clots compared to patients with ‘mid-normal-range’ iron levels (17 μmol/litre). Although factor-VIII increases with age, acute inflammation and vWF concentration (its carrier protein), after accounting for these and platelet count, iron deficiency remained an independent risk factor for increased factor-VIII blood levels and blood-clotting risk. Study authors concluded (citing evidence) that blood-vessel lining cells (endothelial cells) can sense low blood-iron. These cells respond by increasing factor-VIII production to reduce bleeding risk, thus avoiding further iron loss. The extra factor-VIII however increases clotting risk. The important finding was that blood clots disappeared with iron supplementation.

A Smashing Success

18-year-old Rohan Kay of Glenmore Park has an eye for beauty. The local teenager turns pieces of discarded, broken glass into amazing jewellery, and he has created his own business, Rohan’s Glass Treasures. Rohan’s business began in 2021, before he finished school. He originally planned to clear carparks of glass and tables from gum for hospitality businesses, however the pandemic meant that this wasn’t an option. “Rohan has been collecting and sorting glass from local parks, carparks, and bushland since he was very young. It’s his most relaxing activity” explained Sarah Sydir, Rohan’s mother. After putting some of the glass that he had collected into a rock tumbler and his younger sister Ellianna wrapping wire around it, the family were blown away with the results. “My biggest fear as a mum of a child with a disability was what happens after the safety net of school is over? We looked at so many post-school options, but none of them really fit our big dreams for Rohan. We wanted him to have control over what he does and how he earns real money” she said. His support workers help him find, create, pack, and post all his products. Ellianna helps create the jewellery designs. The main product in the Rohan’s Glass Treasures store is his signature Love Key Chains. This consists of a heart key chain with a completely unique glass piece and design, where no two pieces are alike. He has recently started making wall hangings and necklaces too. “The response we have had has been fantastic. Rohan’s support workers are working double time to catch up on his orders! I would love to see him working in markets to bring his creations to more people, so that they can see just how incredible he is” Sarah smiled. “We would love to talk to as many other families as we can to let them know that young people with a disability have so many more options than they are presented. Amelia Keeps Them Smiling 2021 was a big year for Amelia McInerney, with the children’s book author releasing three picture books. She has followed this up with one of the books, Who Fed Zed? recently shortlisted for Book of the Year with Speech Pathology Australia. The former Glenmore Park resident released Who Fed Zed? (published by Allen and Unwin), My Bird, Bertie and Mary Had a Little Lamb- What REALLY Happened (both published by Scholastic Australia) last year. Who Fed Zed? was shortlisted for Book of the Year with Speech Pathology Australia, in the ‘3 to 5 years’ category. This annual award is given to the ‘best book for language and literacy development’ and books are also judged on their appeal to children. “My first book, The Book Chook, was shortlisted for this award in 2019 and I’m thrilled Who Fed Zed? has now made the list. I’m also excited that the book has been released in the UK” explained Amelia to the Glenmore Gazette. Who Fed Zed? is a zany story about a goldfish called Zed, a flea-ridden dog called Jed, and a fish-feeding mishap that the kids, Ned, Ted, and Fred uncover. “There’s a couple of twists to keep readers on the edge of their seats and Dr. Seuss fans will enjoy that every line of the entire story rhymes with ‘Zed’, which makes it as fun to read as it was to write! Terrific retro illustrations by Adam Nickel add to the humour” she smiled. Amelia often draws upon inspiration from her own children when writing her books. “Although this book is wacky and fun, it can also be used as a springboard to discuss food allergies and the importance of checking food labels with children. Allergies are so common these days; it was actually my own child’s food allergies that inspired me to write this story” she ended. Amelia’s next book is slated for May 2023.

How To Give Instructions Your Child Will Follow

Every day, well intentioned parents communicate important messages to their children. The problem is that not all messages are received in ways we anticipate. Communication is a complex process and a skill we often need to work at no matter how old we are. These tips will help you get your message across and enjoy a more stress-free family life. • Gather your child’s full attention: Make sure you are no further than an arm’s distance and address your child by name first. Make sure that they are not doing anything else like playing with a toy or watching TV. • Give instructions about what you want your child to do, rather than what not to do: Think about moving from ‘STOP’ to ‘START’ instructions. For example, instead of saying, “don’t play with the ball inside”, try “please take the ball into the backyard and play outside”. • Be specific about what you expect: Spell out exactly what needs to happen next and avoid judgmental and vague language. For example, instead of saying, “don’t be so lazy”, try “please put your dishes in the sink after you’ve finished eating”. • Always consider age and stage of development: For an instruction to be followed, it must be appropriate to that child’s age and stage. Consider the type and number of words you use. • Break larger tasks into smaller steps: This is especially true of younger children. “Get ready for bed” refers to following a sequence of several steps: pack away your toys, change into your pyjamas, brush your teeth and so on. Think about prompting children by giving one to two steps at a time. • If your child follows an instruction, praise them: When you show children appreciation for what they do right, this reinforces good habits. When instructions are unclear, children (and parents) can easily become overwhelmed and frustrated. When parents use calm, clear and developmentally appropriate instructions, this supports children’s growth and development.

Glenmore Park Brumbies JRLFC are looking to finish the year on a high note, after two and a half seasons that have been disrupted by COVID and wet weather. Like so many local sporting clubs, the challenge to get their players on the field to play has been hard. However, there is light at the end of the tunnel with new facilities taking shape at their home ground, Ched Towns Reserve at Glenmore Park. “We are looking forward to the completion of the new facilities being built at Ched Towns Reserve, now planned to be completed next February and just in time for the 2023 season” said Allen Bush, Secretary of Glenmore Park Brumbies JRLFC to the Glenmore Gazette. “It will give us a bigger canteen, a better BBQ area, change rooms, storage and toilets for the public” he continued. This will be a welcome addition for the Brumbies, who have had to work out of containers and with portable toilets in recent times. The club has a fundraising event this month, which will be a Golf Fundraiser at Big Swing Golf in Jamisontown. It will take place on Sunday 3rd July from 3:00pm till 5:00pm. The cost is $60 per person and includes two hours of golf fun plus pizza. Tickets must be purchased online at https://trybooking.com/ CAIVK. With only 50 tickets available, it’s sure to sell out. “The committee are working hard to ensure the season finishes strong. We are hopeful that an uninterrupted season and the new facilities will help grow our numbers in 2023” Allen ended. Plans Underway for Surveyors Creek Public School’s 20th Anniversary Plans are currently underway for Surveyors Creek Public School’s 20th Anniversary, with a celebration taking place later in the year. The festivities will be held on Saturday 5th November from 10:00am till 2:00pm, with the official ceremony commencing at 11:00am, at Surveyors Creek Public School in Glenmore Park. Past and present families, staff and the community will be invited along for a picnic on the school’s oval. There will be food trucks in attendance and a photo/memory display in the hall. A formal ceremony will feature the opening of the school’s 10th Anniversary capsule, as well as the creation of their new capsule. Performances on the day will include K-2, 3-4 and 5-6 dance groups. Surveyors Creek Public School has seen many changes in its 20-year history. It has grown from a small school of 142 students to 524 now. The playground has undergone work, with updated equipment for the students to utilise. Teaching has also changed during this time, with the reliance on technology within lessons being conducted with the help of interactive whiteboards. “I have enjoyed being a part of the Surveyors Creek Public School community since 2007 and have seen the school grow and change over this time. It has always been caring, generous and values education. I am now part of the school not only as a teacher, but as a parent with my two children now also attending Surveyors Creek Public School” said Nicole Franzke, Teacher at SCPS. The school are looking for food truck vendors and coffee trucks that would like to be a part of their celebration. Memorabilia for their displays are welcome from students, teachers, parents, and caregivers. A Facebook group, Surveyors Creek PS 20th Year Celebrations 2002-2022, has been set up with up-to-date information added. CHRISTMESS is the fourth feature that brings together long-time friends Steve Le Marquand and Heath Davis, with Le Marquand starring in Davis’ previous three films Book Week, Broke and Locusts. Hannah Joy’s highly anticipated role as ‘Joy’ will see her contribute original music to the film, as well as Christmas covers. Davis, who grew up in Glenmore Park, said “I love Christmas movies, but I’ve never really seen a Christmas movie that depicts the reality of what the holiday season is for many of us - crippling stress, anxiety, malaise, and economic struggle, all too often underpinned by alcohol abuse. At its core, CHRISTMESS is a celebration of the human spirit, the kindness of strangers and the healing power of forgiveness. It feels amazing to finally be in production with an incredible team and I can’t wait to share the film with audiences”. Producer, Daniel Fenech added “Our unconventional Christmas movie has heart, and with Heath and I both having spent a large portion of our upbringing in Greater Western Sydney, it felt right to be shooting the film here. There’s a lot of love and community support behind the project”. CHRISTMESS is written and directed by Heath Davis, and produced by Daniel Fenech, Cindy Pritchard, and Matthew McCracken. The shoot took place over three weeks, with the cast and crew adhering to COVID-safe filming practices. Every day we are wronged by others in one way or another. Sometimes it is big things in life and other times little things. Do people deserve to be forgiven? I think the answer is ‘no’. People don’t deserve to be forgiven. Forgiveness is not something a person deserves, but a gift you can choose to give. The whole point of forgiveness is that you are choosing to not treat the person the way they deserve. If someone stole my car, then what they deserve is the consequence for theft. Forgiveness is not holding that wrong against the other person. Forgiveness is giving them what they don’t deserve! Nothing in the other person makes them worthy of forgiveness. It means forgiveness is always a gift we can extend to people who don’t deserve it. It is also a gift that others can extend to us. When we have done the wrong thing, others can choose to forgive us. King David, the king of Ancient Israel, said this about God, “He does not punish us for all our sins; he does not deal harshly with us, as we deserve.” Psalm 103:10 Each one of us does not deserve to be forgiven by God, but the good news is that he offers each one of us forgiveness for our wrongdoing.

There is Hope in Hardship IF… To live our best life, we may have some problems to solve. I mean that there may be challenges or obstacles to our joy, peace and freedom that need to be overcome. And if these problems are persistent, it means the solutions we have been trying haven’t worked. But there is hope IF we can muster the courage to abandon our ideas about what does and doesn’t work, and to see the world in new ways. Albert Einstein is often quoted as saying: No problem can be solved from the same consciousness that created it. This means that problems in our earthly life cannot be solved with a human understanding of things. We will need a higher understanding or view of life. For example, a conflict between two people cannot be resolved by the very human inclination to pay back in kind. Tit for tat. But genuine love (serving the other not your self ) that the Bible teaches is integral to God’s higher consciousness or understanding of life, can solve it. The Bible also teaches about God’s spiritual power made available to followers of Jesus Christ for the purpose of solving the challenges and obstacles to our joy, peace, and freedom. No problem can be solved from the same consciousness that created it. If your solutions aren’t working, it may be time for the courage to consider pursuing God’s love and power.
