Joy to the World What brings you joy? Is it seeing a good friend you love spending time with? Is it visiting a place you’ve known about but never been to? Is it looking at a painting, or a beautiful sunset?

And why do we talk about joy at Christmas?

When you read the stories about Jesus’ coming, joy features quite a bit. The shepherds out in the fields were told by the angel that he had “good news that would cause great joy for all people” (Luke 2:10). That’s a pretty big call. But it was good news they had been expecting for some time. It was of a promise made long before, that was about to be kept. It was of God’s promised king arriving in his world. It was of a ruler who would rule wisely and not simply for his own sake. It was of a rescuer who would reverse what’s wrong with the world, by winning forgiveness for us. It was of the one who would bring us back into the relationship with God he always wanted for us.

When you get to the end of the stories about Jesus, there’s joy there too. Even though he was executed, three days later he rose to life again. And what are we told his followers did when they saw him alive? They worshipped him and were filled with joy. The take home for us? He was who he said he was. He was even God himself. He is the great promise keeper.

We talk, and sing, and we can feel joy at Christmas, because it celebrates the greatest events, and the greatest person, and the greatest message in history. Is that a joy you share? Even as we live years later, on the other side of the world, I certainly hope it is as we celebrate this Christmas.

Digital Licence For Penrith Drivers Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith welcomes the announcement that NSW drivers can now go wallet less and use a Digital Driver Licence on their smartphone for proof of identity and proof of age for pubs and clubs, and for roadside police checks, with the technology officially going live.

“Drivers in Penrith are encouraged to download the DDL and give it a go,” said Stuart Ayres.

“Smartphones have become de facto wallets and we’re using world leading technology so that drivers can use digital licences in everyday scenarios,” Stuart Ayres said.

“The DDL is hosted securely on the new Service NSW app, locks with a PIN and can be accessed offline. It will provide additional levels of security and protection against identity fraud, compared to the plastic driver licence.

“The NSW Government is working closely with other sectors to have them come on board and accept the DDL. This includes nightclubs, restaurants, hotels, petrol stations, supermarkets, convenience stores and tobacco retailers. Watch this space.”

Drivers who opt-in are encouraged to carry their plastic licence in the initial stages.

Local Girl Guides Represent Australia in Mexico Emu Plains Girl Guides have just returned from a cultural trip to Mexico, where they represented Australia at the Day of the Dead Camp which was held at Our Cabana, a Girl Guides and Girl Scouts World Centre in Cuernavaca last month.

The team of 8, consisting of 4 senior guides and 4 adult members were able to make the trip thanks to the amazing efforts of Emu Plains Girl Guides, who raised $31,283.86 through their Cheezels and Easels paint alongs, BBQs, market stalls with handmade goods, high teas and community donations.

“We are so grateful for the generous community donations and support. Thank you everyone who had a part in sending us on our once in a lifetime adventure!” said Thea Hams of Emu Plains Girl Guides.

Whilst visiting Our Cabana, the team participated in a variety of activities which included Mexican crafts, cooking, games, traditions as well as interacting with a group of children from the local orphanage.

When in Mexico City, they went to Biblioteca Vasconcelos (library), Anthropology Museum, Chapultepec Zoo, Chapultepec Castle and the artist market. With only 2,000 tickets sold a day, the group were amongst the privileged who make the pilgrimage to the Frida Kahlo Museum.

The cultural experience also included trips to Taxco (known for its silver), Ocotepec where they visited alters and watched celebrations and back to Cuernavaca to look at the Catedral de Cathedral.

The Girl Guides thoroughly enjoyed their time in Mexico and the wonderful memories that were made.

“My favourite part of the trip was getting to know all of the interesting people along the way. From the people at our fundraisers, to the people living in Mexico, there was always an exciting fact to listen to. Meeting everyone at Our Cabana was fun too including the participants, volunteers and staff alike. Getting to know the girls who went on this trip was incredibly rewarding also” said a member of the Girl Guides.

“Personally, I enjoyed seeing the culture and meeting new people. I got so much out of experiencing all the different traditions and the way that they do things. New Boat Ramp Improves Access to River The new boat ramp at Tench Reserve has been officially opened by the Hon. Senator for Western Sydney Marise Payne, Member for Lindsay Melissa McIntosh, State Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres and Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM. The $6.7million upgrade funded by the Australian Government, NSW Government and Penrith City Council, involved construction of a new three lane boat ramp, additional car and trailer parking as well as car only parking, jetties and access roads.

Penrith City Council project managed the construction of the ramp with funding from the Australian Government’s Community Development Grants (CDG), NSW Government’s Better Boating Now and Council reserves.

Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM thanked the Australian and State Governments saying the upgraded facilities on the Nepean River will be well

utilised over summer.

“This project would not be possible without the three levels of government working together to provide much needed infrastructure to the people of Penrith and Western Sydney” Cr Fowler said.

“The quality of the final product is a testament to the Council staff who managed the project from its inception, to design and construction ahead of its final delivery for the community.

“The Nepean River, and the surrounds, are a natural asset that are enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of people each year. The river offers a wide range of leisure and recreation opportunities which people come to Penrith to enjoy.

“Boating and water activities on the river are incredibly popular during the warmer months. The new facilities will offer a safer experience for anyone wanting to get out on the water while providing plenty of parking”.

“I’m inspired by Middle Eastern flavours combined with good local and seasonal

produce. I’d like to do poached salmon or chicken salad with labneh and lots of fresh herbs and crisp greens.

Maybe a simple pasta dish and a pie or lasagne. I also like the idea of sharing so I would like to offer a grazing plate for a couple and families to share.”

Christmas Shines On Emerald

The much-loved Emerald Street Christmas Lights in Emu Plains will once again shine this year, making a return for the first time since 2017. The magical display promises to bring some festive spirit to the local community, whilst continuing to raise valuable funds for charity.

“We have been doing the Christmas lights display on a larger scale since 2008. We had last year off as I went to run the New York Marathon for my 50th birthday and we did not have enough time to set up when we got back. So, this year will be our 11th year, but we did do it much smaller for many years before this” said Organiser Linda Hernando to the Emu and Leonay Gazette.

This year’s display will include a new photo opportunity prop that was designed by Linda and one she hopes no other display will have. They would like the community to have an interactive experience where memories are made taking photos. Keep an eye out as they may just have another hide the elf competition, which was a huge success in 2017.

They are hoping to have the Christmas lights up and running on the 1st of December, however, this will depend on the weather and time, as they both work fulltime. Once set up, the lights are turned on at about 7:30pm till 9:30pm during the week and later, on the weekend. They’re aiming to have their big night, The Christmas Spectacular, on the 21st of December and this will be confirmed soon.

“Sadly, we lost our wonderful Santa to illness this year, so it just won’t be the same without him. He had been selflessly donating his time with us since 2012 and he will be greatly missed. We are not sure about Santa and are still tossing up different ideas” explained Linda.

Once again, they will be raising money for Bear Cottage, which is a children’s hospice. Having done this since 2008, to date they have raised $31,995 for the charity. This year they would also like to donate the funds that they raise from The Christmas Spectacular to the Salvation Army, in honour of Terry (AKA Santa) who was a supporter of the organisation.

“What I enjoy most is the creative aspect of it and the joy it gives to those who come and see it. I like trying to change it up a little each year and adding a few new things. I love it when the regulars come along and notice all the new things. We have met and interacted with so many wonderful people over the years and I have seen children go from babies and turn into teenagers” Linda cheered.

Emu Plains based beautician Michal Gabriel of Michal Gabriel Beauty and Brow has beaten off hundreds of nominees to be crowned the winner of the Best Brows in the 2019 Secret Salon Society Online Awards recently.

The amazing achievement comes just two short years since Michal opened her business at the foot of the Blue Mountains, after working in the beauty industry for the past 17 years.

“I am very honoured to win this international award and to bring it back here to Emu Plains” Michal said to the Emu and Leonay Gazette.

Michal Gabriel Beauty and Brow specialises in natural eyebrow design and restoration. The beauty business also provides high end facials and makeup workshops.

Michal’s story began right back when she was a child and was unhappy with the scars on her eyebrows, which would often cause her to be insecure and not want to leave the house. She turned this fear around into a desire to want to help others.

“My passion is for brows, there’s no doubt about that. I have had 5 scars on my eyebrows since I was young. From the age of 12, I never left the house without filling them in. Naturally it became a passion and today I love helping women who are frustrated with their eyebrows. I help to give them back their confidence with their natural brows and beauty. I always use the hashtag #SaveTheNaturalBrow, as I feel that with all the eyebrow trends that there are today, I do save them” explained Michal.

Now that Michal has the Best Brows Award, she hopes to continue her work with creating beautiful eyebrows for her clients.

Council is holding a free recycling drop off week

6pm at Jamison Park. We are accepting normal household items such as glass bottles and jars, milk and juice cartons, paper and cardboard, plastic bottles and containers, and steel and aluminium cans. *The week excludes public holidays and the weekend.

Council is providing extra bin collections for two weeks to help with the additional waste and recycling produced over Christmas and New Year’s Eve. During the weeks highlighted, place all bins on the kerbside the night before your normal collection day.

Collections will run late into the night, so please do not bring your bins in until they have been emptied.

Emu Plains Lions Sell

‘Real’ Christmas Trees

There has been disappointment, with the announcement that a number of local Christmas tree farms will not be able to provide trees this year.

However, the Lions Club of Emu Plains will be selling ‘real’ Christmas trees on Saturday 14th December, at Lions Park on the Great Western Highway in Emu Plains.

The banner announcing the date and above location should be erected by Council about two weeks prior to the sale.

The trees are sourced from Oberon, where the grower advises they are not affected by drought or water restrictions.

Lions have had to marginally increase their selling price to $40 per tree, commensurate with the supplier’s increase.

Lions Coordinator, John Choma said “Selling prices have remained unchanged for the last 3 years, and it is only a modest increase this year in line with the suppliers increase. A comparable tree from some of the ‘supermarket stores’ can retail at double what we are selling them for”.

The estimated drop-off time for the trees is between 6:30am and 7:00am and there will be only 90 trees available, so the Club recommends that you get in early to avoid disappointment!

The proceeds of the Christmas tree sale will enable the Lions Club to make a donation to Ronald McDonald Family Room at Nepean Hospital.

New Memorial for Emu Plains Public School Emu Plains Public School have welcomed a new memorial garden and murals, thanks to the School P&C Committee, who used the funds from a grant that they received from the Department of Veterans Affairs to complete the project.

Emu Plains Public School P&C Committee President Alicia Pullen championed the project, organising murals, garden beds and a plinth.

Alicia was able to source donated or discounted scaffolding and other trades, as well as the murals on both walls by a local artist. Emu feathers and an emu statue are included in the project.

The school had it’s first ceremony in the new garden on Remembrance Day and the students made poppies to adorn the garden and pay their respects.

“This project was much needed.

It will now help keep the memories alive for the students” said Alicia.

How do you handle Holiday Season?

December can be a time of stress and overwhelm - parties, school assemblies, awards nights and shopping. Everyone gets tired and this can lead to frayed tempers and impatience.

About 6 weeks out from Christmas we can sometimes hear parents say, “if you aren’t good, you won’t get any Christmas presents”.

That’s tricky for the following reasons: • Do you really mean it? Are you going to follow through and not give your child any Christmas presents? It’s probably an empty threat (and the kids know it).

• The consequence is not immediate enough.

• The consequence probably isn’t related to the mistaken behaviour.

• What does ‘good’ or ‘nice’ mean? It’s too vague.

All the above can lead to an escalation of mistaken behaviour, which can make everyone’s life more difficult.

The holiday season is supposed to be a time of kindness, peace and goodwill. You are allowed to take some time to breathe and enjoy. This includes giving your kids and yourself some downtime to reduce the overwhelm.

Deal with your children’s behaviour in a calm and assertive manner. Tell them what they are doing wrong (for example, “you are yelling at your sister”) and what to do instead (for example, “speak kindly and calmly”).

Deal with your child’s behaviour at the time that it occurs and give a consequence that is related to the mistaken behaviour (for example, take away the toy that the children are fighting over).

Give an instruction a maximum of two times. The more times you ask, the greater the risk that you will get frustrated. If the child does not comply after two requests, you can issue a consequence (related to the behaviour of course).

Another year is over. It’s a cliché but it’s true – treasure the moments you have with your kids. They will be adults one day, and you will wonder where the time went. You owe it to yourself and your kids to make the time as positive as possible.

Get the undesirable behaviour over and done with quickly so you have more fun and times of connection. In the end, that’s all that really matters.

School Holiday

The Christmas school holidays can sometimes feel like they go on forever, and it’s not just the parents that feel that way. Many children feel unease as the structure of school life is taken away for anywhere from five to seven weeks starting in December. When you think about it, that’s a long time to have an unpredictable routine and it is no wonder parents are frequently pulling their hair out by mid-January. The best way to combat this frustration for everyone is to create a balanced holiday.

Firstly, try to schedule in some physical activity each day.

Whether it is an early walk down by the river, a bike ride around the Regatta Centre or even just an afternoon swim in the pool or game of cricket in the backyard. Get the kids moving and burning some energy. These activities are cost effective and fun do to with friends.

Secondly, give your children ‘pyjama days’. Let them laze around doing absolutely nothing or whatever they want one or two days a week. Set up playdates or go to the park for a picnic. If you are working, see if your child can spend some time with a friend or if you’re home, offer for your child to invite a friend over. It is not as scary as it sounds, in fact often children will be less ‘bored’ if they have someone to hang out with that is not their sibling.

Australian Hero Inspires New Name for Emu Plains Catholic College From 2020, McCarthy Catholic College will have a new name, recognising education pioneer St Mary of the Cross MacKillop. The well-known local school will be known as Penola Catholic College Emu Plains.

Penola is the place where St Mary of the Cross Mackillop and Father Julian TenisonWoods started a school, beginning their work of extending the opportunities of education to thousands of Australian children and young people.

College Principal Leader Tania Cairns said that the school draws strength from values and example of St Mary MacKillop.

“Our learning community looks to the life of this strong woman and her work in education for inspiration” Tania said.

“We’re very proud of the strong reputation the College is developing for learning and teaching in the Penrith and Lower Mountains areas”.

The school was established in 1986 as a senior secondary college and became a comprehensive Year 7 to 12 school in 1999. Well-known graduates include State Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres MP and Rugby League legend Brad Fittler.

The only Catholic school in NSW to be part of the prestigious P-TECH program, students have the opportunity to benefit from strong community and business partnerships with Telstra, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Western Sydney University.

My name is Kobhi and I am 10 years old. I love to help my Mum and Dad cook yummy food in the kitchen.

Each month, I will share with you some of my favourite recipes. Oh yeah, make sure you always have an adult helping you cook.

Mini Christmas Puddings

Ingredients

One chocolate mud cake White chocolate (buds) One packet of raspberry lollies Method

1. You need a chocolate mud cake that is already made from the shops. Use a teaspoon to scoop the mud cake, like ice cream. Roll the mud cake into little balls.

2. Ask your helper to cut up a packet of raspberry lollies into small pieces.

3. Put the white chocolate into a microwave bowl. This next step is for your helper too, which is melting the chocolate. They need to reduce the power on the microwave to medium. Heat the white chocolate in the microwave for 30 - 90 seconds.

4. Remove the bowl from the microwave. Your helper needs to mix the white chocolate. It should be soft and not hard. Use a spoon to dab on little bits on to the top of the balls of chocolate mud cake. It looks like white frosting.

5. Put the cut up raspberry lollies on top of the white chocolate on the mud cake balls.

6. The mini Christmas puddings need to go in the fridge for an hour, until it sets.

7. Ready to serve.

Last month the District Gazette hosted their first ever fundraising event, Supper With Spirit, raising money for Lung Foundation Australia. Guests enjoyed an evening of delight as Ghost Whisperer Suzie used her spiritual gift of psychic mediumship to relay messages to loved ones. It was an emotional night full of laughing, crying and of course, coming together to support a great cause.

The night was also an opportunity to raise awareness of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), which is a rare lung disease in which the tissue around the air sacs within the lungs become thickened and scarred. This scarring makes the lungs stiff which makes it increasingly difficult to breathe. This slows the efficient delivery of oxygen into the bloodstream where it is needed to be transported to the rest of the body. Idiopathic, suggests ‘no known cause’ and currently there is no cure for those suffering with IPF. There were many winners on the night with over $2,000 worth of prizes generously donated by Citadines Connect Sydney Airport, The Day Spa Penrith – Jorja James Spa, Salt Therapy Wellness Centre, Emu Wellness, NIX on Park Lane Jewelry, Elsker Oils with Julie, Aussie Grown Catering, Michal Gabriel Beauty and Brow, Our Penrith, Lavilin Australia, Michelle Munday (Lorraine Lea Independent Stylist), Essential Bodyworks and Action Organising.

Lions Support with Cakes and Puddings The Lions Club of Emu Plains will be selling Lions Christmas cakes and puddings again this festive season.

The sales of cakes and puddings enables the Lions Club to provide donations in the form of Christmas cakes to Penrith Community Kitchen, Nepean Food Services (Meals on Wheels) and the Salvation Army (Glenmore Park), who provide them to the local community with their Christmas meal services.

Bespoke Realty Group's passion is to support local groups who help the community. Sharon Mudiman, Director of Bespoke Realty Group said, "Our team has purchased 100 Lions Club famous Christmas cakes to gift our clients. We enjoy giving at this time of the year and supporting the Lions Club of Emu Plains, who help our community in need. Have Lower Back Pain? Then just get on the Bottle!

I ask many of my ‘lower-back pain’ patients to get on the bottle! Nothing like a stiff drink to ease back pain, right? Just kidding of course.

Patients lie down on a carpeted floor, place a foam roller (about the size of a standard wine bottle) under one side of the small of their back. The roller is placed either just to the left or to the right of the spine, never over the spine itself and patients breathe deeply in and out for 5-10 mins. The idea is to gently but deeply stretch lower back muscles beside the spine (using breaths) without bending the spine itself.

This simple activity helps ameliorate back pain generally and avoids an increase in pain that may happen due to daily activities, between clinic sessions. Some patients shouldn’t do this activity, so it’s important to be assessed first. Let’s see why such stretching often helps reduce back pain.

Scientists induce lower back pain in animals by injecting carrageenan to damage lower back tissues, causing inflammation, and infiltration of immune cells such as macrophages and neutrophils. Immune cells then release further signals that can exacerbate things, leading to ongoing pain and eventually to tissue fibrosis. Fibrosis is the formation of excess fibrous connective (scar) tissue in an organ or area during

any repair process that occurs in reaction to tissue injury.

After carrageenan injections, these animals can’t walk properly, and their lower back is much more sensitive to mechanical stimulus. In short, their backs are painful, it hurts animals to move and so they have shortened stride lengths and lower instra-step distances.

Studies have shown that low-amplitude static (non-cyclical) stretching stops fibrosis and inflammation. To test this in lower back inflammation, half the carrageen-injected animals underwent a stretching program. For 12 days, 10 minutes twice daily, animals did simple sustained back-stretching. Researchers found stretching: 1. lowered tissue inflammatory immune cells 2. decreased scar tissue formation 3. decreased mechanical sensitivity of the back 4. restored stride length and 5. restored intra-step distance, Appropriately done, stretching is an important therapy for musculoskeletal injuries, and patients who incorporate it often get better more quickly and with less suffering.

I know it's a cliché but try to do away with the presents and be present this Christmas.

Our lives are filled with material belongings and possessions, but it's the time and experiences you enjoy together as a family or with friends and colleagues that make for the most pivotal memories.

Years (even months) down the track it's hard to recollect the material possessions that we were gifted with, but we do remember the highs and lows, the times when we were reduced to tears and when we rolled around on the lounge room floor in fits of laughter.

This Christmas put the phones away and be present - it's true that phones today make it easy to connect with those from afar, but often disconnect us from those that are near.

If only I could have 'one' more Christmas with my loved ones who were taken too soon.

We have plenty of Christmas cheer, events, festivities and a recipe to help you get in the spirit!

We'll be back in the New Year with our first edition in February. Until then, stay safe and enjoy Your Community News.
