The Making a Difference- Community Service Award recognises the person or group who volunteer to help during emergencies or natural disasters, champion environmental causes, contribute to community sports or provide exceptional community leadership.

Mr Willey said these vouchers are great for us as having people book direct means they are supporting local businesses.

There are more than 1,200 Stay NSW businesses registered across the State but it is not too late for accommodation premises to get on board. Stay NSW Vouchers are valid until 9 October, 2022.

Participating businesses will be able to redeem vouchers seven days a week, including public holidays. Customers will be able to search for places to stay on the easy-to-use business finder.

At the Defence Establishment, Minister Dutton joined Ms McIntosh in hearing from cadets about their experiences and future plans.

Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith joined Mr Phil Willey of Quest Penrith to encourage people to apply for their $50 accommodation voucher which is now available as part of the NSW Government’s $250 million Stay NSW program.

Stuart Ayres said the voucher initiative is a commitment to bolster the accommodation industry while getting people excited to travel in NSW. “This is a win-win for the local community – the vouchers will give hard hit businesses much needed stimulus, while also encouraging residents to explore our great State,” Stuart Ayres said.

“The Stay NSW program has been expanded and fast-tracked, so people can enjoy a staycation sooner. Whether it’s a quiet country inn, the family-run caravan park or a hotel in the Sydney CBD, every budget needs a boost this year.

The Minister for Defence, Peter Dutton, recently joined Lindsay MP Melissa McIntosh at SES Headquarters in Claremont Meadows to meet with local SES volunteers who had been responding to the floods.

Minister Dutton and Ms McIntosh then visited the Defence Establishment at Orchard Hills to meet and have breakfast with local Army, Navy, and Airforce Cadets.

Ms McIntosh said she had been in contact with the Prime Minister and Defence Minister throughout the floods about the impact on her local community and bringing Minister Dutton to meet the SES was an opportunity to thank our local volunteers for their extraordinary service.

“This is the second time in 12 months that we have experienced extreme weather and floods. Our local emergency services have gone above and beyond to support those who have needed help.

This includes working with the Australian Defence Force, to rescue a family from their flooded Werrington home.

“Both the Minister and I wanted to thank our local volunteers for their tireless work, and great partnership with the ADF”.

Following the destructive floods occurring across the state, Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) is warning the community against the incorrect use of fuel-powered equipment.

Fuel-powered equipment can include generators or pumps that have an exhaust pipe.

The exhaust fumes from the engine can quickly fill a room, house or garage and render the occupants unconscious.

Fire and Rescue NSW Assistant Commissioner Education and Training, Roger Mentha said it's critical to avoid the use of generators and other fuel-powered equipment inside their homes.

"This type of equipment is not suitable for indoor use and can lead to a buildup of colourless and odourless carbon monoxide. This can be fatal as it reduces oxygen when inside”.

“All fuel-powered devices should be used in accordance with manufacturer's recommended practices.

“Never use portable generators indoors, or in garages and sheds. They should always be used outside well away from windows, doors, vents or any other opening,” he said.

Penrith ANZAC Day 2022 The City of Penrith RSL Sub-Branch will be hosting the School ANZAC Commemoration and ANZAC Day Dawn Service this month.

The School ANZAC Commemoration will take place on Tuesday 5th April at Penrith Paceway. It will be virtually run by schools, with Winmalee High School the host school for the day. 1,500 school children and teachers are expected to attend the event. Local Cadet Units will also be attending and marching.

Penrith Sub-Branch are supplying transport to/from the event for the schools. The public can attend, with the grandstand/roped off area restricted to school children for safety.

Both events are the first unrestricted in 3 years.

The ANZAC Day Commemoration will be on Monday 25th April. The Silent March will start at 4:30am, with 300+ veterans and uniformed personnel taking part. Dawn Service begins at 5:00am at Memory Park in Penrith and will go for 3040 minutes. Breakfast will be served to the public immediately following the service at the Penrith RSL, for a gold coin donation.

The City of Penrith RSL Sub-Branch are expecting 3,000+ people at the Dawn Service and they anticipate the streets to be full.

They will be placing TV monitors across strategic locations in the Penrith CBD, allowing people to view the service without accessing Memory Park.

Immediate access surrounding Memory Park will be closed off to all traffic from midnight 24/4, until 10:00am on 25/4. There will be no traffic in or out of that dedicated area during this time.

Current COVID Safe rules at the time will be in place. Set up seating in Memory Park will be reserved for veterans and invited guests.

It is fully supported by civic leaders, local, state, and federal members. The service will be attended by our elected members or their representatives.

They also anticipate this to be supported by the public, particularly given current world affairs.

Warming Hearts

With cold weather starting to set in and Winter approaching, Emu Plains local Rachel O’Donnell has an idea that she would like to share. She has started a community project which will see crocheted/knitted blankets, beanies and scarfs donated to the homeless.

Locals are invited to donate wool or their crocheted/knitted wares which will be distributed to the homeless and vulnerable during the colder months.

“A while ago, I was diagnosed with a rare condition. To help me process this, I started to crochet blankets for friends and family. I soon realised that I loved crocheting and wanted to put it to better use. I thought why not do it for the homeless. After posting about this on the Emu Plains Neighbourhood Community Page, I found that people were interested in getting involved with this,” said Rachel.

Rachel believes that this is an initiative that can bring the community together and to help those in need and less fortunate.

“The idea of this is to not only help the homeless, but to help everyone. I know myself that when I started crocheting, it helped me work out a lot of things that I needed to work out in my mind, and it gave me joy” Rachel explained.

She hopes that the community embraces the project and that it continues.

“I hope to have enough this year that I can go and visit the homeless with my son and to show him that we can make a difference to people, even if it is something small. If it takes off, we could have this every year” she stated.

Emu Plains is Calling: Mountain Culture Expands Craft brewery Mountain Culture are set to open their brand-new brewpub in Emu Plains to the public later this year.

Mountain Culture have been brewing on-site at the Emu Plains production facility since late last year. Starting out as a brewpub in Katoomba in October 2019, they went from producing approximately 60,000L of beer per year to now brewing 3,000,000 per year with their new factory in Emu Plains.

“It is a state-of-the-art site and showcases leading brewing technology. In fact, we were the second brewery in the world to have our centrifuge, which is a piece of equipment that's responsible for removing any suspended solids and oxygen from the beer, improving its quality and shelf life” said Harriet McCready of Mountain Culture to the Emu and Leonay Gazette.

“We've always said that the only reason we would grow bigger is if it helped us improve the quality of the beer. Now we're the size we're at, we can use equipment we previously couldn't, we can buy the best possible hops and ingredients because we have purchasing power now. We can also create a team of talented brewers and let their work shine. It's really exciting” she continued.

With two sites now, Katoomba and Emu Plains, both are quite different.

Katoomba’s location is in a heritage building and it is where Mountain Culture’s story began. The original brew house is still there, and it is where they started tinkering away, perfecting recipes.

Emu Plains, on the other hand, is all about size! It is much bigger and advanced in terms of technology and processes. It will be a 24/7 operation and it's about highlighting what's possible when it comes to brewing beer.

“We started Mountain Culture because we wanted to create a community that could come together over a shared love for really good beer. While that hasn't always looked like we thought it would thanks to lockdowns, it's so rewarding seeing people get behind the beer” Harriet ended.

Many parents now find unexplained transactions on their credit cards, thanks to the rise of “in-app purchases”. In-app purchases refers to buying goods from inside of an application on a mobile device. Most children’s apps and games are free to download but make their profit this way.

A recent study found that 95% of games targeted at children have at least one advertisement. Despite this, children are not developmentally equipped to respond to manipulative marketing strategies used to push in-app purchases. Advertising can be positioned seamlessly into gameplay, making it difficult for children to know the difference. Many children don’t even know that they are spending real money in these games.

Emotional strategies can particularly be difficult for children.

On Roblox, many in-game items are advertised as “for a limited time only”, creating pressure to buy now or miss out. Peer pressure also contributes heavily to Roblox purchases as the game has a hot topic in the school yard.

While regulators get to grips with the issues, there are unfortunately few protections for parents who find themselves out of pocket for their children’s in-app purchases. Parents are often refused refunds by their financial institutions, the app’s carrier Apple Store or Android Play Store, or the app’s creator.

Therefore, prevention is better than cure!

It is important to ensure you are supervising children’s use of devices, especially for children under 5 years old. Children need support and guidance to discern and manage online advertising. It is important for children to express their wants, but we all must learn to manage the disappointment of not getting something we had our heart set on.

Make sure you lock or set up two-step authentication for inapp purchases on any devices used by children. If you have an iPhone or iPad, you can lock in-app purchases through your App Store settings. On Android devices, you can configure the settings in Google Play so that all purchases require twostep authentication, meaning you will receive an email or SMS requiring you to finalise a purchase.

With the 2022 Penrith and District Junior Rugby League Competition about to kick off, Matilda Vella of Emu Plains JRLFC has had a dream start to the season.

That’s even before taking the field.

The talented sportswoman will line up for the Under 16 Girls league team for Emu Plains JRLFC this year, after success in another sport, OzTag. Matilda was a member of the Under 14 Girls West Sydney Tigers OzTag team that were recently crowned undefeated champions at the 2022 Junior National OzTag Championships in Coffs Harbour in February. Two other members of her league team also played in this team.

“I enjoy playing both sports. The friendships and lifelong friends that I have made is great” Matilda explained.

This season, Emu Plains JRLFC will field it’s first Under 12 Girls team, as well as two Under 14’s and Under 16 Girls teams.

“Emu Plains have been active in girls’ rugby league over several years, with our numbers increasing each year. We are proud to be pushing the game of women’s rugby league and are committed to the growth and development of all our players” said Joanne Vella, Emu Plains JRLFC Registrar.

The popular local club are still taking registrations in all age groups for 2022.

Do You Need a Hand?

Sometimes we need a helping hand. With the recent floods and pandemic, there’s never been a more important time to help one another. Local Keith Myles has started ‘Penrith Helping Hands’, where the local community can come together if they need a hand or would like to lend a hand.

Penrith Helping Hands is a Facebook page, that was created last month. In just a few short days, 250 members joined, and it continues to grow.

“I have done volunteer work with Mama Lana’s. I had planned to do other volunteer work, when COVID restrictions made that difficult” explained Keith to the District Gazette.

“After having a conversation with a friend about how much I enjoy volunteer work, they were talking about a job that needed to be done where they didn’t have help and could have done with a helping hand” he continued.

The motto for Penrith Helping Hands is simple, “Kindness is free”. It is not an organisation, rather a concept that can be practiced.

“There is bound to be people who will need help and will also like to help. This will create opportunities for the community to come together and even make friends” smiled Keith.

For now, he hopes to watch it evolve. There may be new areas introduced depending on how it’s welcomed and its success.

“The more people that follow the page means that more people are getting and giving help” Keith stated.

“It’s important to give something back. This also brings good karma” he ended.

Lions Recycle Millions of Dollars’ Worth of Glasses

Emu Plains Lions currently have 5 recycling outlets at: • Penrith RSL Club, Castlereagh Street, Penrith • Emu Plains Optical, Emerald Street, Emu Plains • Specsavers, Westfield Penrith Plaza, High Street, Penrith • Specsavers, Nepean Centro, Station Street, Penrith • Rotary Recycles Op Shop, 156 Great Western Hwy, Blaxland Lions Sue and Jack Hunt, normally pack around 300 glasses per box to ship to Queensland for sorting and repairs. They average sending approx. 15 boxes per year, however, over the last 6 years it has slowed a bit, most recently due to Covid.

The total number of glasses collected to date by Emu Plains Lions is 44,722.

In 2019, when the total glasses collected was 30,000, one of the optometrists estimated that ‘the average cost of a pair of glasses was $200’. So, at that point Lions had sent away $6 million dollars’ worth of glasses. This figure has now grown to over $8.9 million worth of glasses recycled for use by third world countries.

Even at $100 a pair of glasses, this figure would be about $4.5 million dollars of glasses.

Some sunglasses without prescription lenses are donated to Lower Mountains Rotary for sale at their Op Shop in Blaxland, in exchange for glasses they collect. Other sunglasses are donated to charity organisations such as Sailability NSW and Sydney Heritage Fleet, for the use of volunteers and clients with a disability.

Lions have also sent several boxes of sunglasses to the workers in the Ship Wreckers in Bangladesh (via a local contact) as these workers are rarely paid and are not issued with any protective clothing or eye wear, so they use these while welding.

NSW Government Funds New Programs in Penrith to Keep Seniors Connected

Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith recently joined Toby Chapman of Penrith Regional Gallery to announce that seniors across Penrith are set to benefit from new programs through Penrith Performing & Visual Arts (PPVA) and Penrith City Council (PCC) which are designed to keep them socially connected with others.

Stuart Ayres congratulated PPVA on receiving $17,172 and PCC on receiving $40,000 through the Reducing Social Isolation for Seniors Grants Program.

“Helping older people build lasting relationships shows we value their important place in our region as role models, carers and volunteers,” Stuart Ayres said.

“I’m proud our community has stepped up to promote activities and resources, which empower seniors to stay connected”.

PPVA will invite local seniors to meet together for their “Morning Makers” workshops that will be held on the first Saturday of each month at Penrith Regional Gallery in Emu Plains. Lead by local digital media artists, the collaborative and engaging workshops will incorporate everyday technologies, building digital literacy and digital art making on iPads. PCC, in partnership with LEEP will deliver 10 Digital Literacy

Mentoring Workshops for Isolated Seniors through community centres in 5 priority locations. LEEP mentors will work alongside individual seniors to develop strong relationships that will extend beyond the life of the program. Participants will gain skills and confidence in using digital devices to better connect with their local community, family, and friends.

Minister for Seniors Mark Coure said 24 local councils and community groups have received a share in $600,000 to run programs designed to reduce social isolation among seniors.

“Even without the challenges of COVID-19 – no one likes to be alone or feel disconnected from their community, especially not our seniors,” Mr Coure said.

“This funding is about helping create environments where people can come together, meet new people and, above all, enjoy themselves in a social environment.

“These programs are helping us achieve exactly that, whether it be helping seniors learn a new skill, connect with like-minded people or even rekindle their passion for a previous hobby,” he said.

Grants of up to $60,000 were on offer for NSW councils or organisations running community-focused, meaningful activities. They must run until December 2022. The projects actively seek out socially isolated NSW residents aged 65 and older, and/or Aboriginal people aged 50 and over, and/or priority target groups.

History and His Story

I’ve always loved history. I love hearing about it. I love imagining what it would have been like to be there when this or that world shaping event happened. I’d love to be able to go back in time to see the places we live now, to see what they were like back then.

And isn’t it great that while we can’t go back there, we can have a window on the past, and what was important, and what has shaped us to be the way we are today.

And as we come to Easter, what’s striking about this celebration is that it revolves around real and public events that happened in history.

When the apostle Paul spells out the good news message of God, he’s really specific - this person died for our sins, he was raised from the dead, he was seen alive by other people who’d seen him die, and he was seen by even more people who you can go and ask to confirm this report (well, at least you could when he wrote years later!) (1 Corinthians 15:1-8).

If you’ve ever wondered what this life was about, and whether there’s life beyond this one, these events offer the answers. Life is about knowing God through the Lord Jesus who died for our sins and rose from the dead so we could be forgiven by God and have eternal life with God. And the people who told this story, his story, knew it was true, and we can to, because it unfolded in history.

How Does Vitamin K Prevent Arterial Calcification?

Artery walls contain smooth muscle cells. They help control vessel tone, diameter, blood pressure, and use vitamin K to produce/secrete large amounts of a protein called ‘mature matrix-Gla-protein’ (MGP), a strong inhibitor of arterial-wall calcification. When animals can’t make MGP: 1. For genetic reasons, 2. Because they’re given warfarin; extensive calcification of large arteries occurs within 4 weeks of birth.

Warfarin stops vitamin K being utilised in the final step of MGP production, so immature forms of MGP are produced. Immature MGP fails to prevent arterial calcification, and arteries harden. Warfarin causes “artificial” vitamin K insufficiency leading to arteriosclerosis.

Vitamin K insufficiency/deficiency can occur for other reasons: 1. Low dietary intake (significant but underappreciated cause) 2. Disturbed intestinal vitamin K absorption due to gastrointestinal disorders, 3. Antibiotic therapy.

Artery walls endure huge stresses second-to-second, as they’re forced to endlessly expand/stretch and recontract by the beating heart. To cope, vessel wall tissues are highly metabolically active, and in healthy (nutrient-replete) persons, wall cells have sufficient nutrients to continually repair/maintain themselves and wall tissues.

In unhealthy people (multiple-nutrient-deficits), vessel wall cells cannot meet physiological demands placed upon them by their high stress environment. Wall cells fail to complete the necessary repairs to maintain themselves and arterial wall structural integrity. Pathological

wall changes appear. According to this model, cardiovascular disease is primarily a dietary deficiency disorder.

Under normal/physiological conditions, arterial wall fluids are supersaturated with calcium and phosphate, however calciumdeposition is prevented by circulating and locally produced calcification inhibitors (including MPG). Under ‘pathologic (nutrient depleted) conditions, arterial wall stress leads to: 1. Artery wall cells undergoing apoptosis (they die), 2. Bits of dead cells (apoptotic bodies) and other signals alerting (summoning) platelets and immune system cells 3. Platelets bind to damaged vessel-walls releasing calcificationpromoting factors 4. Remaining artery wall cells respond to these signals by synthesizing all components of atherosclerotic lesions including calcium depositing proteins 5. But insufficient anti-calcification factors are synthesised 6. And mineralization occurs Vitamin K via MGP, inhibits calcification. MGP blocks: 1. Pro-calcification cell signal-production: a. Apoptotic bodies b. Matrix vesicles c. Hormonal signals 2. Calcium depositing proteins production 3. Calcium deposition directly by binding calcium-salts 4. Growth of existing calcium micro-deposits (covers them) So, to avoid artery calcification, just eat more Vitamin K containing natto and fresh leafy greens.

Community Recovers After Floods The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) Penrith Unit has been busy supporting and working with our local community in the recent storm and flood emergencies. Volunteers responded to more than 300 calls for assistance across the Penrith local government area, in addition to supporting other SES units.

“With requests completed, we are currently working on Rapid Impact Assessments with our partner agencies – NSW Rural Fire Service, Fire and Rescue NSW, and the Defence Force – supporting the collection of information about damage to properties and infrastructure that will help inform ongoing response and recovery planning” said Ian Hyde, NSW State Emergency Service – Penrith Unit, Deputy Unit Commander.

“We saw storm damage across Leonay, Emu Plains and Emu Heights at the beginning of the event with several trees damaging property and the usual leaking roofs. The flooding event followed directly on from us preparing for it with the distribution of sandbags provided by Penrith City Council and the Rapid Relief Team. The first flood peak left Penrith LGA relatively unscathed. The second peak, however, saw flooding more widely spread from Londonderry in the North to Wallacia in the South. Our teams responded to both storm damage and flood emergency requests for assistance. Flash flooding once again occurred in Hobart and Melbourne Streets in St Marys requiring some evacuation” Ian continued.

Floodwaters have gone down and there are no longer any evacuation warnings or order for our area. Residents are advised to return with caution to flood affected areas. As residents clean up and recover, NSW SES advises everyone to monitor local conditions and remain alert, drive slowly, obey roadblocks, and never drive through floodwaters. Celebrating 30 years of Bushcare in the Blue Mountains This year marks the 30th anniversary of Bushcare at Blue Mountains City Council.

Bushcare is a volunteer program that restores and cares for bushland reserves throughout the Blue Mountains. There are currently more than 60 active Bushcare groups working in our local communities.

Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill said: “The Bushcare volunteers’ consistent and hard work makes a huge difference to the health of our environment, and helps protect the World Heritage Area we live in.

“I’ve had the pleasure of meeting many Bushcare volunteers over the years, and they are the most passionate and dedicated people.
