Aussie Jack Launches Bicentenary Crossing Next year marks the bicentenary of the crossing of the Blue Mountains in 1813 and Penrith is gearing up to celebrate this historic milestone with veteran Australian actor, Jack Thompson.

A program of community events, including a re-enactment trek, a family camp out and a historical festival will be held in May 2013 - exactly 200 years after the first crossing took place.

Actor Jack Thompson is the face of these celebrations, which are being supported by community minded local business, JK Williams. An obvious choice to be the face of the event, Jack is well known for his love of the Australian bush and Australian history and is keen to bring attention and recognition to these early explorers.

From the Editor Winter is here, and I awoke to the first frost of the season the other morning.

Nothing like a good frost to let you know you’re alive! Time to pull out all the winter woolies, and to settle down on the lounge with a warm cup of tea and your latest edition of your community newspaper. We have some great brainteasers and puzzles on page 10 to warm up the brain cells.

It’s also a great time to have the oven going to warm up the kitchen. If you’re after some inspiration, I’ve included my secret slice recipe on page 8, for your eating pleasure.

Our Lady Leads the Way with Science Our Lady Of The Way Primary School is innovative in their approach to science, always looking for new and exciting ways to introduce scientific concepts to the students.

CSIRO Science Education Centre visited the school in May for a fantastic day of fun science. The CSIRO team presented two interactive hands-on science programs.

Year 6 were captivated by a “Forensic Frenzy”, while the year 5 students engaged in a fascinating unit called “The Human Body”. Judging by the childrens’ responses, the program was a great success.

Here’s what some of the year 5 students had to say about their awesome science day.

“CSIRO is the best because I never knew that I had a blind spot!” said Paris.

Logan said, “CSIRO was a gigantic step forward in our research for our human body unit!”

“We learnt about all our different blood cells and what blood looks like close up!” said Annie.

Max thought, “CSIRO is great because it can teach you so many things.”

“We learnt how a tablet dissolves in your tummy!” Emily B said.

Retiring after 40 years in the Public Sector On 24th February the Commissioner of Taxation, Michael D’Ascenzo visited the Penrith Tax Office to join with staff and notable guests to bid farewell to Bruce Turner, Chief Internal Auditor of the Tax Office and the senior executive leader of the Penrith office. The Commissioner paid tribute to Bruce’s outstanding contribution to the ATO. Bruce is a proud Emu Plains local who commenced his long and distinguished career serving the community in the mailroom of the Rural Bank Penrith. Through Bruce’s strong work ethic, personal drive and integrity he has spent the vast majority of his career in senior roles in the State Bank of NSW, Reserve Bank of Australia, State Rail and Integral Energy and eventually returning to Penrith to take up the role of Chief Internal Auditor for the ATO in 2007.

Throughout his career Bruce has attained global, national, and local recognition for his contributions to promoting good governance.

Whilst Bruce is highly recognised and remembered within the ATO for his contributions to the organisation over the past 5 years it is important to acknowledge that Bruce is especially passionate about contributing to the broader community.

Bruce chairs the Audit & Risk Committees for the NSW Department of Premier & Cabinet, and the Nepean Blue Mountains and Western Sydney Local Health Districts, and he sits as an independent member on the NSW Transport Construction Authority, NSW Country Rail Infrastructure Authority and Wyong Shire Council audit/risk/governance committees.

Bruce was recently appointed to the international committee for the auditing profession, the Institute of Internal Auditors, where he will represent Australia’s public sector interests.

Throughout his career Bruce has also found time to author technical publications, including chapters for two better practice books in 2009-2010 published in Asia and the UK, Chair of the Public Sector Audit Network Group in the ACT (a group of

Modern Classic at the Joan

Penrith based theatre company Emu Heights Productions is proud to present “The Shoe-Horn Sonata” again at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, after its successful inaugural 2011 season.

‘The Shoe-Horn Sonata’ is a powerful award-winning play by John Misto based on true events of two women who survived a Japanese POW camp in the jungles of Sumatra. Reunited after fifty years for a TV documentary, the women relive the horrors, fragile triumphs, humour and courage required to survive.

They also uncover a devastating secret that separated them for half a century.

Funding for Arms of Australia Inn Museum The Arms of Australia Inn Museum will benefit from extensions to the roofing over paved areas after the Nepean District Historical Society put in a successful application to the NSW Government’s Community Building Partnership Program, Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres said today.

Mr Ayres met with Rosemary Weaver and members of the society to announce the $12,989 grant toward the museum.

“The Nepean District Historical Society do a fantastic job with the operation of the Arms of Australia Inn Museum and getting the message out about our region and the significant role Penrith has played in the development of our state,” Mr Ayres said.

“I will continue to work with members of the Nepean District Historical Society and other local organisations to find ways to build their capacity to support our community.”

Cody and Chloe put Penrith on the Map Cody and Chloe Luczak of Emu Plains showcased their favourite Penrith places and scored a $400 cash prize for their efforts in the Penrith is Here photo competition.

WHAT’S COOKING?

Winter is here, so there’s no better time to cosy up in the kitchen with all your favourite ingredients, whipping up some tasty treats. I must admit that I’m not much of a cook, but I do have one specialty – here’s the recipe. It meets all criteria for a successful treat – it’s super easy, and it is delicious! I’ve never yet met anyone who hasn’t enjoyed it!

Vicki’s Yummy Slice (my now not-so-secret recipe) Ingredients 1 cup organic natural sultanas 1 cup dried cranberries (eg. Craisins) 1 cup Cadbury’s Dark Chocolate Baking Chips 1 generous cup flaked almonds and/or crushed cashews 1 cup desiccated coconut 1 400g tin Skim Condensed Milk N.B. You could experiment with substituting different nuts or dried fruits, to your preferred taste.

Method • Preheat oven to 200ºC. • Line a rectangular slice tray with baking paper.

• Layer the ingredients evenly in the tray, staring with

sultanas, cranberries, chocolate chips, nuts, then coconut.

• Drizzle the condensed milk evenly over the layered

GO TEAM SKATEL! The 2012 Skate Australia Artistic Roller Skating National Championships to be hosted by SkateNSW, will be held at the Whitlam Leisure Centre, Memorial Avenue, Liverpool NSW, from 1st – 7th July.

Team Skatel Artistic Roller Skating Open Precision Team is thrilled to represent New South Wales at the Championships.

The team consists of 12 members aged from 10 years old and up, ranging in ability. The skaters train together once a week at the Emu Plains Roller Skating rink, but many of the skaters train at least 4 times a week individually. It is believed that our team will be the youngest team competing in the precision event and for many of the skaters this will be the first time that they will compete at this elite level.

To be able to compete as a representative of NSW is a great opportunity for all our skaters.

However, to get our team to Nationals we need to raise approximately $600 per skater. This includes team costumes, training leotards, NSW representative track suits, nomination fees and coaching fees.

To help the team, Penrith Skatel are holding a Skate-a-thon on Sunday, 24th June, 2012 at the roller skating rink to help raise some money. So why not grab your friends and head on down to the skate-a-thon for some fun and fitness. You could even be a lucky winner. The team will be running a raffle and a silent auction on the day.
