Belle Wins NSW Youth Parliamentarian of 2018 St. Mary’s Senior High School student and Leonay resident, Belle Powell has been awarded the NSW Youth Parliamentarian of 2018.

16-year-old Belle was selected to participate in the YMCA NSW Youth Parliament, which is an empowerment and advocacy program that provides a platform for young people to have their voices heard through legislative debate and decision making.

She was appointed to represent her electorate as the Honourable Member for Penrith and was elected as the Minister for Women’s Affairs. “I worked alongside a passionate team of inspiring young women to create a bill focused on the prevention of Domestic Violence in NSW” said Belle.

The bill was argued by her and her team at Parliament House in Sydney and passed! It will now go to the government for assessment for the future.

“We want to grow up and raise our children in an Australia where a woman is not hospitalised every 3 hours due to Domestic Violence” said Belle. “We felt as though our youth voice could have a strong influence.

If we can tap into the root cause at an education level, we could be able to change the thinking of children, who will grow up to be respectful, informed adults”.

Belle also said of her experience, “youth parliament gave me the freedom to advocate for issues I felt passionately about, in an encouraging atmosphere with like-minded peers. It was a wonderful opportunity to be able to be able to learn about government processes”.

Through Robert’s Eyes Spring time in the Blue Mountains is a beautiful time of year. Wildlife awakens from its Winter slumber as the sun comes out and the warmer weather once again returns. For Leonay Photographer Robert Brindley, this is the perfect time to get behind the lens and capture these moments in time.

The professional Photographer began his career over 10 years ago, in 2006, when digital photography was beginning to thrive. As a local resident, he soon fell in love with the beauty of the landscape in our very own backyard.

“I enjoy the ever-changing colours and atmosphere when photographing the Blue Mountains. To capture this, you have to get up very early or be late for dinner to get the special moments. As a keen bushwalker, I find particular satisfaction from finding new views and aspects of the landscape of the Blue Mountains. It is a unique place on the planet” explained Robert.

Landscape photography allows Robert to see things slowly that we often miss in our busy lives. He also enjoys the great satisfaction from architectural exterior and interior subjects as well as wedding photography.

One could argue that a keen eye is needed to take a good photo, but Brindley believes there’s no real formula. “The vision comes from within the photographer. No amount of good quality equipment will produce a good photo, although a good artist always avails themselves the best tools that help render the final result. It's often enough to just have a camera phone.

If you have a fascination for the world around you, whether man made or natural, and you carry a camera around most of the time, combined with purpose, then the great photos will come” he said.

For his private work, Robert is currently creating a photographic book of the Sydney Opera House, which will be published next year. He is also working on a series of photographs based on the ancient super continent, Gondwana, of which there are remnants on the east coast of Australia. This project will allow him to travel, which he is looking forward to.

Some of his professional work now is focused on portraits within the music industry, creating promotional packages for bands and solo artists. As a musician himself, he describes this assignment as being the most fun.

Gardeners looking for inspiration or just wanting to experience the beauty of spring in the Upper Blue Mountains, will again be flocking to the annual Leura Gardens Festival in September and October.

This year’s festival, the 54th, will take place over 2 long weekends: Saturday, 29 September to Monday, 1 October Friday, 5 October to Sunday, 7 October The cost of an all-gardens ticket is $25 and $8 per person per individual garden.

This year there will be ten beautiful cold-climate gardens on show to captivate our visitors and provide inspiration to all. There will be masses of tulips, bluebells, daffodils, peonies, rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias as well as magnificent flowering cherries, forest pansies, crab apples and dogwoods to delight the eye.

Other attractions include the Music in the Gardens performances held from 1pm in the gorgeous grounds of the Waldorf Leura Gardens Resort on each of the festival days and including the Sydney Mandolin Orchestra and the Heathens Choir of Blackheath. Entry will be by way of a gold coin donation.

Visitors can also take home a permanent memento of the festival from the Plant Sales Centre which will this year feature plants from several new participating nurseries, providing a much wider range of both native and exotic species. The centre will also have on sale metal garden art and an interesting range of garden tools.

Also of interest is the Art Show presented by the Society of Mountain Artists featuring work created in the gardens during the Festival.

Both the Art Show and the Plant Sales Centre will be open for 9 days from Saturday, 29 September to Sunday, 7 October.

All proceeds go to the Blue Mountains District ANZAC Memorial Hospital and other health related organisations.

A New Little A’s Season is Here

What’s Cooking

Mango Meringue Bites Ingredients 2 small ripe mangoes, peeled, chopped 2 tablespoons caster sugar, plus 3/4 cup extra 2 tablespoons lime juice 2 egg yolks 75g butter, chopped 24 mini tart shells 3 egg whites Preparation 1. Blend or process mango, sugar and lime juice until smooth.

Transfer to a medium saucepan. Whisk in egg yolks. Place over medium-low heat. Stir constantly for 6 to 8 minutes or until mixture thickens and coats the back of a spoon.

Remove from heat. Add butter, one piece at a time, whisking until combined. Cool for 5 minutes. Place tart shells on a large baking tray. Divide curd among tart shells.

Refrigerate for 3 hours.

2. Preheat grill to high. Using an electric mixer, whisk egg whites until soft peaks form. Gradually add extra sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, until firm peaks form. Place meringue in a piping bag fitted with a 1cm fluted nozzle. Pipe meringue onto pies. Place under grill for 2 minutes or until tops are lightly browned. Serve.

Spring Clean Your Body At long last, Spring arrives. We often think of this season as a time to throw open the windows and let the fresh air in while doing a big tidy up around the house. What a great idea! But, don’t stop there. It’s also the perfect time to take stock of yourself by refreshing your mind and body as well.

Here are a few ideas for trading a winter sedentary lifestyle for a fresh season of healthy living: Use lawn maintenance as exercise - gardening, weeding, mowing will get you outside and moving around AND spruce the garden at the same time.

Create an outdoor entertaining space - get some comfy seating and eat more meals outside, hang out with the family or friends, take your laptop outdoors to work or better yet, just relax and read a book.

Try a new outdoor activity - this is a great time to try something new like yoga, hiking, swimming, biking, golf or kayaking.

Practise mindfulness - learn to meditate, keep a gratitude journal or write affirmations. It’s important to declutter the mind, heart and soul.

Change your diet - drink more water and add a springy touch to meals.

With the warmer weather on its way, it is almost time for the 2018/2019 Little Athletics season to get underway.

Competition at Emu Plains Little Athletics Centre starts on the 14th September 2018 at 6:00pm and they are looking forward to welcoming back their returning families as well as those who are joining them for the first time.

“We provide a family-friendly environment that is fun for children aged from 3 (Tiny Tots) to 16 years old. As a group of volunteers, it's our mission to do the very best for our athletes so that they can all reach their potential, whether that's just to enjoy the fun of Friday nights, or to go on to State and National Championships” said Kellie Martin, President of Emu Plains Little Athletics Centre.

They run a great Tiny Tots program for 3 and 4-year olds, which teaches them the fundamental skills of athletics in a fun and exciting way.

For those who have never tried Little Athletics before, but who wish to give it a go without the commitment, they offer a two-week trial for $20 which is refundable if you chose to stay on with them for the reminder of the season.

There is always a great vibe on Friday nights at the oval, with exciting competition and a BBQ to feed the family at the end of the working week.

The rest of the time we can be kind. Sometimes we have to set boundaries and limits for our children to keep them safe and well. It’s an important part of parenting, and an important part of a child’s development.

Children feel safer when we put reasonable limits on them, and they expect it of us.

Some of the angriest children I have worked with are those whose behaviour is an attempt to get Mum or Dad involved in managing their behaviour. His “out-of-control” behaviour is his way of trying to get Mum or Dad to take more control. And what does “out-of-control” look like? A child hitting you, being angry with you, screaming at you, telling you that she hates you, running away from you. Anger is fear expressed in a loud manner.

When a child perceives a parent as ‘weak’, unable to take charge, the child feels unsafe, so she ramps up her behaviour to try to force the parent to take responsibility for setting the limits.

However, some parents have a really difficult time doing this.

The parent may have grown up with a parent who was harsh, punitive, and mean, and does not want to be like that person, so she flounders when it comes to setting boundaries and limits and guiding and educating her child. When the parent flounders, the child flounders.

The child has a limited experience of life, so out of frustration and anger he resorts to yelling and hitting you to get you to take notice. If negative attention is all the child gets, then she will seek more of it through her behaviour.

‘Punishment’ does imply being mean. I ask parents to focus on ‘discipline’. The word ‘discipline’ originated from the Latin word ‘disciplina’ and it meant instruction and knowledge, and to learn.

And what do you want your child to learn? Self-control. When children learn self-control they learn balance, calm, persistence, and confidence. Is that the kind of kid you want to send out into the world?

Setting boundaries and limits for your child can be done in a calm and methodical manner. It does require you to be consistent, immediate, and decisive. It also requires you to role model selfcontrol. You calmly and quickly deal with the behaviour, so you can enjoy more of the good stuff (relationship, connection, fun) with your child.

NAPLAN: The Facts

THEN CALL JOHN 0423 019 053 Around this time of year, it is common for the controversial discussion about the validity and purpose of National Assessment Program - Literacy And Numeracy (NAPLAN) to resurface amongst parents, teachers and schools. With the release of individual results; schools, teachers and students are under intense scrutiny and often the intended purpose and aim of NAPLAN data is lost in a sea of comparison and fingerpointing blame.

According to the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA), “NAPLAN tests the sorts of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life, such as reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy. It is important to remember that NAPLAN is not about passing or failing, but about assessing learning progress.

At the classroom level it is one of several important tools used by teachers to measure student progress”.

The testing process was somewhat different this year with the introduction of online testing, which has been riddled with criticism from teachers and educational experts questioning the validity of comparable data with those who sat the pen and paper test. ACARA released a statement prior to the release of the data this year reassuring the public that their “data analysts and measurement advisory experts have advised the data is valid and comparable”.

NAPLAN is designed to be a tool that assists schools to improve the learning of all young Australian students, however, it is important to acknowledge that it is one snapshot of time. It cannot measure classroom engagement, creativity or confidence. It does not consider exam performance, anxiety or other external factors influencing students on test day.

That said, it is still a valuable tool for schools to identify needs and analyse results to personalise learning and track growth.

NSAID – Can They Increase Your Risk of Having a Heart Attack or Stroke?

From my previous article we know that taking NSAIDs provides no improvement in pain scores or function long term.

But, let’s take a look at another reason why you may not want to take NSAIDs longer term.

Vioxx, withdrawn from sale in Australia in 2005, provides cautionary tale. Vioxx was on the market for 4 years in Australia, doctors writing nearly 10-million prescriptions in that time. The figures for Australia are unknown, but in the US, Vioxx caused up to 140000 heart attacks, and up to 40,000 deaths.

But what of other NSAIDs? A 2013 study in the Lancet showed that all NSAIDs increased cardiovascular risk, including mortality, myocardial infarction, and stroke. This includes newer drugs such as celecoxib (Celebrex). Older drugs diclofenac (Voltaren), ibuprofen (Advil and Motrin) actually doubled cardiovascular risks. Chris Cannon MD, recently stated in the medical publication Practice Update, ‘anyone who thinks ibuprofen is “safe,� beware’.

Harvard medical school summarises the FDA warnings for NSAIDs as follows: • Heart attack and stroke risks increase even with shortterm use • Risk may increase within a few weeks of starting NSAIDs • Risk increases: o when NSAIDs are taken for longer periods o with increasing NSAID dose • Even people without heart disease may be at risk • Risk is greatest for people who already have heart disease • Previous studies have suggested naproxen may be safer; more recent evidence questions the certainty of this

Note: these warnings don’t apply to Aspirin, which may be beneficial for cardiovascular disease.

It’s often my older patients who tend to rely on NSAIDs. Such disorders already increase their risk developing heart attack or stroke. Taking NSAIDs for pain simply adds more risk. Harvard Med School provided the following advice: • If you have heart disease avoid NSAIDS if at all possible.

Even so‌ • Take the lowest effective dose • Limit the time you take NSAIDs • Never take more than one type of NSAID at a time • Use acetaminophen (relieves pain without increased heart attack or stroke risk) • If nothing else works, try taking week-long “holidaysâ€? from your NSAIDs, take acetaminophen instead • If you experience chest pain, shortness of breath, or sudden weakness or difficulty speaking while taking an NSAID, seek medical help immediately.

It was two years in a row for the Editor, Jim Devine and topped off a night that included the Clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s President, Alan Cooper, collecting on behalf of the Club, an Excellence Award for 2016/17 and a commendation for Public Relations for 2017/18.

How People Give Away â&#x20AC;Ś.

People give away who they are by what they do and what they say. So, I was blown away the other day when up on my Facebook feed a friend had a famous guest at his 50th birthday party. There, singing Happy Birthday was none other than Hugh Jackman. It turns out heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s friends with my friendâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sister in law.

And boy could he sing. And on top of that, all reports were Hugh was the nicest, most humble guy. You come across a guy like Hugh Jackman, and whatever claims are made about him about his talents and his personality - theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re ultimately backed up or debunked by what he does and says.

Jesus is no different. And what strikes me is the opening claim Mark makes about Jesus in the book of the Bible called the Gospel of Mark. He says, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; Mark hung around with the

apostle Peter, and Peter had been there with Jesus as his story unfolded. But itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fair to question when you hear this claim â&#x20AC;&#x201C; is what Jesus did and said really good news? Was he really Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s King to rule the world? Was he really the one with a special and unique relationship with the God of the world, even God himself?

The only way to answer those questions is to find out what he did, and what he said. And Mark is all too happy to help. This is what the people who were there and saw him said. And what they saw and report is bigger even than Hugh Jackman!
