Fox Finishes in Winning Style at World Cup Final Local, Jessica Fox has finished her 2016 canoe slalom campaign with a stunning victory in the K1 in the World Cup final at Tacen, Slovenia.

24 hours after Fox was forced to settle for silver in the final of the C1, the Australian stunned a world-class field to post a comprehensive victory in the season-ending decider.

Fox finished in 77.55 seconds, more than two seconds ahead of Austria’s Corinna Kunhnle, who posted a time of 79.83, with Great Britain’s Fiona Pennie a further 0.13 seconds behind in third position. “I’m really happy with that race,� Fox said. “On my semi-final run I made a couple of small mistakes, and I just wanted to fix those for the final. “It’s been a pretty good season, consistent. I’ve had three podiums in World Cups, but I missed the final in Prague so I really wanted to make that final. “The Olympics was obviously the big goal, and to come away with another Olympic medal and to win a bronze was absolutely fantastic.�

The victory provides some compensation for Fox, who had to settle for bronze at the Rio Olympics after winning silver in London four years earlier.

By now many of you may have a post Olympic hangover, however, with the warmer weather now upon us, there is no better time to get outdoors and get active.

Dare I remind you that Christmas is less than 100 days away? If you’re anything like me, it only felt like yesterday that we were enjoying time with friends and family during the Festive season and welcoming in 2016.

Situated on the Great Western Highway at Emu Plains, the Arms of Australia Inn Museum is one of the oldest wayside coaching inns in Australia, having been built in two sections with the first around 1826.

The Nepean District Historical Society administers the inn as a museum of items and artefacts from the Nepean District, a number of which are still in working order. It is run entirely by volunteers who conduct tours of the building for community groups, tourists, local visitors, hands-on tours for school students and lantern tours by appointment.

Lantern tours are designed to take visitors back to the early 1800s before electricity or running water and, if they are lucky, to meet some of the past travellers who have taken up permanent residence.

Over the years a number of paranormal groups have visited the inn to investigate whether it is haunted. One such group was Haunted Australia. Its founder, Kade Jones, believes it is. “Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the inn does have a presence or two, but let me reassure you, it is not dangerous by any means and if you ever feel cold all of a sudden, don’t be afraid to say hello to them. You never know what kind of a reply you may receive,â€? he said. His group spent a couple of nights at the inn with equipment designed to pick up any movement, unusual sounds and record video of any unusual activity. “I haven’t seen a ‘ghost’, but we have had a number of psychics over the years who have made contact with the spirits during lantern tours. Hungrythirsty?

I ate breakfast this morning, but I got hungry again. Actually, I ate lunch too, and it’s happened again. Dinner surely isn’t far away, but I have a suspicion ...

Have you ever thought about no matter how often we come back to eat, we always get hungry again? And have you ever added up just how much time a day you spend getting a meal ready? It doesn’t matter how often, or how long, it always comes around again.

Now don’t hear me wrong, it’s not that I don’t enjoy eating.

Roast Pork and crackling, yum! Thai green curry, tasty. Fresh bread and, well, anything, delicious. We eat to live, and it tastes fantastic into the bargain. What’s more, we know we can’t live if we don’t eat.

So it’s no surprise that Jesus was the man of the moment the day after he fed a huge crowd. Free food, it’s not just teenagers who get excited about that. But if the crowd thought they were on a winner, Jesus didn’t want them to lose sight of the main game. So he put this challenge to them, ‘Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life’ (John 6:27).

With a bit more explanation it becomes clear he isn’t talking ultimately about what we put in our mouth, but who we rely on to satisfy our deepest hunger. Could it be possible for anything or anyone to meet that need? He thinks so, and gives us this promise, ‘I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.’

The Emu Plains Lions Club is one of four Clubs who participate in the Chocolate Wheel held each Saturday in Penrith’s Westfield Plaza. The Chocolate Wheel provides the Emu Plains Lions Club with its’ largest revenue source.

Once per year when funds are distributed from a Wheel ’Central Committee’, Clubs decide how they will ‘split’ the proceeds amongst the many deserving local and other charitable organisations and institutions.

Three of Nepean Hospital’s ‘specialty’ departments received a visit from Emu Lions, to receive a cheque donation from President Ian West, Treasurer Dave Markham, Life Member John Choma and Publicity Officer Jim Devine.

Nepean Family Room has 13 volunteers completing 3 hour shifts, from tea/coffee to snacks/light meals for families of children in neo natal ICU. Overnight rooms are available.

Ronald McDonald charity set up the room and the hospital Now manages it. Local companies and a generous community support the facility (37 babies) and between 800-900 families

per year. Cash donations and nonperishable goods are needed.

Guest Article by Professor Matt Sanders It’s tough being a parent but it’s easy to fall into one of the common parenting traps.

The criticism trap is when there are frequent power struggles with your child. The situations escalate from criticising to threatening and yelling. This type of discipline often backfires.

The parent’s anger makes the child and parent resentful and hostile. If these kinds of battles take place frequently, its time to try a new way of handling the situation.

The “leave them alone” trap involves the parent simply not acknowledging their child when they are behaving well. If good behaviour is taken for granted it may be replaced with the misbehaviour that receives more attention. A basic principle of positive parenting is to praise behaviours you would like to see more often.

The “for the sake of the children” trap occurs when parents in unhappy marriages stick doggedly to the same marriage routines, for the sake of the children, rather than addressing the problems constructively.

The perfect parent trap. There is no such thing as a perfect parent and trying to be one will only lead to disappointment, resentment, guilt, and feelings of inadequacy.

The martyr trap is one where parents become so overinvolved in the task of parenting they neglect their own needs.

The parents’ relationship suffers and may end in feelings of dissatisfaction and resentment. Quality parenting can only happen when adults have their own lives in balance.

Parenting is sometimes hard work and it may take time to tackle difficult problems. The good news is that help is always at hand. In Penrith, parenting support is offered for free with Triple P, one of the world’s most highly-regarded parenting programs.

Fox Finishes in Winning Style at World Cup Final All four paddlers completed error-free runs on the dramatically shortened course, which had been reduced to 14 gates after cracks began to appear in concrete at the bottom of the run.

“It’s been a different time for us racing here, a few different issues with the water levels, but I think overall it’s been a great race,” Fox said.

“I definitely felt there was no time to waste. You couldn’t flow like in normal races, it was definitely a challenging race.”

It was Fox’s first World Cup win for 2016, after winning silver medals at two earlier events. It was also a happy return for the Australian to Tacen, where she won her first World Cup event back in 2013.

Big Year Ahead For Emu Plains Little Athletics With over 450 local athletes registering with the club this year, the 2016/17 Season promises to be big, as the sport of athletics continues to grow, for Emu Plains Little Athletics Club.

The new season kicked off late last month, with athletes ranging from 3 years (Tiny Tots) to 17 years descending upon Leonay Oval to compete every week.

The local club hopes to continue to take its athletes this season to representative events which include Zone, Regional, State, State-Multi, State-Relays and TransTasman.

“Watching all the kids grow from Tiny Tots to Seniors into wonderful athletes is definitely something we love here at Emu Plains Little Athletics Club. Knowing that we have helped them achieve their goals and kept them active and healthy at the same time is very rewarding” said Kimberly Fleming, President of Emu Plains Little Athletics Club.

For many of the athletes, it’s not just about competing, but having fun with their friends. “Our goal is to make it fun for all the kids to enjoy athletics. The children keep active and meet new friends every year. We’re a family friendly club” replied Kimberly.

Witches, Monsters and Halloween Safety

WHAT’S COOKING

Witch’s Hat Cookies

Medium • Time 40 min • Makes 12 Ingredients

Method

• 2/3 Cup Plain Flour • 1/4 Cup Firmly Packed Brown Sugar • 2 Tbsp Cocoa Powder • 60g Butter, Chopped • 1 Egg Yolk • 375g Packet Milk Chocolate Melts, Melted • 12 Mini Ice-Cream Cones • 1/3 Cup M&Ms Minis

1. Process flour, sugar, cocoa and butter until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add egg yolk. Process until dough just comes together, adding 2 teaspoons of cold water if necessary. Turn pastry onto a lightly floured surface. Knead until just smooth. Shape into a disc.

Cover with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.

2. Preheat oven to 180°C/160°C fan-forced. Line 2 baking trays with baking paper. Roll out pastry between 2 sheets of baking paper until 5mm thick. Using a 5.5cm cutter, cut 12 rounds from dough. Place rounds, 3cm apart, on prepared trays. Refrigerate for 10 minutes.

3. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until light golden. Cool on trays for 5 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

4. Line a tray with baking paper. Using a small pastry brush, spread a little melted chocolate onto the top of 1 biscuit. Working quickly, dip the outside of 1 cone into chocolate, turning to coat all over. Stick the cone onto the biscuit. Place onto prepared tray. Working quickly, decorate cone with M&Ms. Repeat with remaining biscuits, melted chocolate, ice-cream cones and M&Ms. Refrigerate for 20 minutes or until set. Tie ribbon around base of each hat. Serve.

• 8 Scoops Vanilla Ice-cream • 1 Litre Lime Soft Drink, Chilled • 4 Orange Snake Lollies • 4 Green Snake Lollies Method 1. Place 2 scoops of ice-cream into 4 tall glasses. Top up with soft drink.

2. Arrange 1 orange and 1 green snake lolly in the frothy top of each drink. Serve immediately.

On November 1st they celebrated the end of summer. They thought ghosts visited the living on October 31st. They dressed up like ghosts so the spirits would not harm them. Halloween is a time of celebration and superstition. On Halloween, to keep ghosts away from their houses, people would place bowls of food outside their homes to appease the ghosts and prevent them from attempting to enter.

Whether you are attending a local event to celebrate, having a party at home or with family and friends or simply taking your kid’s out for some trick or treating there are some great tips and idea’s on things you can do to get you in the Halloween spirit, but most of all this is also a time to be diligent and practise safety for all involved. Be mindful and respectful that not all people in Australia have taken on this ever growing tradition, here are some tips to make it a fun, safe and enjoyable time for everyone.  For those at home celebrating, decorate your front door with a pumpkin or a lantern to show you are participating, this lets trick or treaters know they are welcome.  Teach kids to demonstrate manners when taking treats, and to only take wrapped lollies and enough for themselves.  Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colours and make sure it the right size to prevent trips and falls.  Choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision.  Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers.  Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighbourhoods. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways.  Popular trick or treat times are between 5.30pm – 9.30pm.

As a business with Swim Safety at its core, we are thrilled to share that Nepean Aquatic Centre and Eva Bory’s Swim School were the proud recipients of the Australian Swim Schools Associations National Excellence Award in the category of SAFER Swimming last month! The awards were held in Queensland and attended by swim school operators from all around Australia and overseas, plus swimming personalities including Laurie Lawrence and 4 times Olympic gold medallist Libby Trickett OAM,who presented our award. The SAFER Swimming award recognised both schools mission to spreading our safety message throughout the local community, through a combination of quality swimming lessons and education.

Terry Spinks, Operations Manager at both swim schools said “To us as a business, safety is not an add on - we include education regarding safety as an aspect of everything we do, from the learn to swim lesson, to our staff training and required qualifications, in our venues procedures, by offering CPR courses, and in our messaging to our customers and the community about the importance of learning to swim and staying active”. Mr Spinks added “Safety is, essentially, the reason we do what we do and what our businesses are based on - teaching children to swim”.

Roaring Success For Lions AFL Club Emu Plains Glenmore Park Lions AFL Club recently completed a successful 2016 Season, with the local club achieving many goals and continuing as one of the biggest and strongest in Western Sydney.

The club had an outstanding number of players this year, with 200 juniors and a massive 73 Auskick members (children aged from 5-9 years). There were 11 competition teams between the ages of 10 and 17 and also an under 15s Girls team, who proved highly successful. 6 of the club’s 11 teams made semi-final rounds in 2016, with 3 teams going on to represent and win in grand finals.

During 2016, they were the first junior club in Western Sydney to be awarded the status of ‘AFL Quality Club’. This award was based on the assessment completed by the AFL that demonstrated that the club had met various benchmarks to qualify for quality status. Another highlight this season was the selection of 28 of their players across a range of age groups selected for the Western Sydney Development and Representative teams.

The recent success of the GWS Giants making the 2016 AFL Finals has also helped the club. “The success of the Giants means that young people are hearing more about AFL in Western Sydney and are considering the fact the we now have a local team that everyone can aspire to play in one day. It provides living examples to our young players of resilience, perseverance, determination and strength” said Brenda Quayle, Emu Plains Glenmore Park Lions AFL Club Committee Member.

Boron – The Little Known Mineral For Osteoporosis OK so let's have a look at an important mineral that is often overlooked when it comes to bone density and osteoporosis, (as well as osteoarthritis) namely ‘boron’.

1 in 3 women over 50 have osteoporosis compared to 1 in 5 men. Here’s 6 reasons why boron is important for both men & women with osteoporosis?

1.

In women osteoporosis is attributed to reduced estrogen levels (roughly Âź of that in young women) after menopause.

In postmenopausal women boron supplementation has been shown to markedly elevate serum estrogen & testosterone, even more when dietary magnesium is low. Estrogen is actually an anti-inflammatory hormone; this action helps suppress bone resorbing cells!!

In men osteoporosis is associated with low free ‘testosterone’. Boron supplementation significantly increases free testosterone in healthy men, which is converted to estrogen in men’s bones to provide similar bone building & anti inflammatory actions as in women.

Because boron positively influences oestradiol & testosterone levels, it stops the body losing calcium, magnesium, and (if magnesium is low) phosphorus through the urine. Boron also improves intestinal absorption of magnesium and deposition in bone. All these actions help maintain bone density as both magnesium and phosphate are important parts of bone mineral.

Boron supplementation has been shown to increase the body’s levels of both the storage and active form of vitamin D by slowing down the enzymes that degrade both these forms of vitamin D. Vitamin D is important for good calcium and magnesium absorption from food.

Boron supplementation (6mg daily) decreases multiple inflammation markers significantly, and increases activity of SOD a key antioxidant enzyme in blood. Osteoporosis is actually an inflammatory disease, a fact that is not much publicised in the popular media, so boron helps to slow this key driver. Boron is helpful for osteoarthritis for similar reasons.

Finally, boron helps significantly increase production of many vital proteins that build both bone & cartilage The best sources of boron are plant foods. Boron needs to be in the soil for plants to pick it up. Boron content in Australian soils is variable. Mallee soils have a very high content, but soils within the eastern-state sandstone and granite belt have little.

Food boron is easily absorbed but also readily excreted so you need a constant supply. So what foods contain this great bone

building nutrient?

The best food sources are avocados; followed by nuts and dried fruits e.g. prunes, raisins, dates, almonds, peanuts, hazelnuts and beans; while apples, peaches pears, grapes and broccoli, & plant derived fermented beverages i.e. wine cider & beers are also reasonable boron sources. The foods we often eat the most of, i.e. grains, dairy products, seafood & meats contain very little boron.

The Western Sydney Aboriginal Men’s Group is involved in a number of projects to better the lives of Aboriginal men including supporting the establishment and ongoing success of the NAIDOC Jamison Park Family Gathering and supporting the Penrith and St Marys Aboriginal Police Consultative Committee.

They also work with NSW police to provide Aboriginal youth with bikes donated by the local area commands, they also take part in White Ribbon Day activities at the Penrith Civic Centre to help stop violence against women and children and are strong role models.

National Veterinary Nurseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day On Friday 14th October 2016 we plan to celebrate National Veterinary Nurseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital.

It is great to acknowledge the hard work and efforts of our veterinary nurses. The nurses do a lot of work behind the scenes that you do not see or hear about. The nurses monitor the patients whilst under general anaesthetic, medicate animals whilst in hospital, answer enquiries, clean the hospital, and ensure the smooth running of the veterinary hospital. Without the veterinary nurses, we would not be able to do our job as a veterinarian.

We plan to celebrate by having a long lunch with enough food to feed an army.

We have 7 nurses at the hospital with Sheridan recently on maternity leave, and I hope you get to know them as you come and visit our hospital.

Kirsti Lane After 20 years of veterinary nursing, Kirsti went back to TAFE to update her qualifications. Kirsti graduated from Veterinary Nursing Certificate IV (again) in June 2016. Kirsti enjoyed the study and found that the basics had not changed, but technology had certainly advanced.

Kirsti enjoys spending her time off with her daughter and husband (and her animals of course) camping, bushwalking and trying to keep fit! They have 3 dogs (Roxy, Rory and Crumbs), 2 cats (Ivory Grace and William Wallace), 3 fish, 2 birds and several hermit crabs!

Kristie Borg Kristie joined our team in April 2013. She has completed studies in certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing in 2011. Kristie is currently studying a Diploma in Veterinary Nursing (General Practice) through Crampton Consulting Group.

Kristie's furry family includes: four dogs (including Myloh the Jack Russell, Pepi the Chihuahua and Reilly and Coco the Maltese Terriers), one medium haired cat named Missy, three birds (Mac, Peaches and Budgie), and four horses (Jordie, Lexie, Minnie and Bella). All of which she enjoys spending time with.

Rachel Kent Rachel graduated as a Veterinary Nurse in December 2012 at Richmond TAFE. She enjoys spending time with her friends and family when she is not at work. Rachel has a much loved Labrador Molly, and Jinx the cat.

Stacey Johnston Stacey has grown up in the Lower Blue Mountains area and in 2001 began her Veterinary Nursing career working at local veterinary clinics and gaining her Certificate IV Veterinary Nurse qualification at Richmond TAFE. Sticking Together After the Death of Your Child Every couple experiences problems in their relationship but grief, adds extra stress.

In the early stages of grieving some common reactions can include: • Shock, anger, disbelief, overwhelming sadness, shutting down, staying in bed and not wanting to join in.

• Guilt that they could have done something differently.

• Fighting about anything and everything.

• Wishing your child was with you.

• Feeling lonely, even around people.

• Difficulty talking to friends.

People Grieve Differently: Some couples argue that their partner is not grieving the “right” way.

Ideas For Couples To Reconnect • 20 minutes each day checking in with each other discussing how your day went. Being heard is important, you will feel connected in a way that you haven’t experienced before.

Understanding and accepting how the other feels provides a foundation for building your ‘new life’ together after loss.

• Keep your daily routine intact. Get out of bed, dress, have

breakfast, remember to breathe doing what needs to be done.

• Don’t be afraid to ask for help. It is difficult seeing your partner consumed by guilt, but let them be.

• Grief takes a toll on the body. Take care of your physical self.

• Find things to do together to help with your grief. Research shows, yoga can help couples connect through body, mind and spirit.

• Make time to do things you liked to do before. It’s okay to laugh and have fun.

• Seek support from people other than your partner – each needs a break from each other’s grief.

• Know days of celebration will trigger both of you in different ways. Plan how to deal with these days and what you need if you are triggered.

Keep healthy, love each other and navigate your ‘new normal’ together.
