Fox Rewrites Canoe History Again

Australia’s Jessica Fox has created history by winning a third consecutive women’s C1 title at the Canoe Slalom World Championships in London. The 21-year-old said she was motivated by failing to defend her K1 world title 24 hours earlier. Her win this morning makes her the first woman in both K1 and C1 to win three consecutive titles, and she joins only two other paddlers – one of the others being her father, Richard, to win a hat-trick of World Championships. Fox dominated the final, one of only two athletes to complete the course without a penalty, and finishing a massive 4.91 seconds ahead of the Czech Republic’s Katerina Hoskova in a time of 113.51 seconds. Australia’s Alison Borrows finished eighth. “I’m relieved,” Fox said. “There’s joy and elation to put together such a good run. I‘m really happy with the way I lived that race, and how I lived with the whole experience, because it was a tough final.” Fox said she was thrilled to have entered the record books as the first woman to win three consecutive titles in either the C1 Continued page 10. or K1.

They hope to raise in excess of $10,000 to help the Foundation move one step closer towards its goal of zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030.

Hey Neighbour! It was great to hear the decision that Australia would resettle 12,000 Syrian refugees. It was great because Syria as a nation is so needy. It was great because individuals from that part of the world are going through such trauma. But do you know what else? It was great because we can offer something that will make a difference to these people’s lives. We often refer to people as a ‘Good Samaritan’ when they do something unexpected to help someone else. Did you know it was Jesus who created the story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:2537)? Someone was asking him who he should be generous to. He was asking, ‘Who is my neighbour?’ just after Jesus said, ‘Love your neighbour.’ So Jesus told the story of two people you’d expect to stop and help an injured man, who didn’t. But of the third, a Samaritan, who did. The twist in the story was that the people Jesus was speaking to hated the Samaritans. And the Samaritans probably hated them back! But this is why what the Good Samaritan did was so remarkable. He offered something that was needed and would make a difference to another person’s life, and didn’t expect anything back in return. Now we don’t hate Syrians, and they don’t hate us. But even through the terribleness of this crisis we can do something that will make a real difference. They are our neighbours on the world stage. It’s not even as great an act of love for us to welcome them here as the Good Samaritan’s kindness, but it certainly is loving. Providing food, providing a safe place to stay, making them welcome, offering security – what a great way to say, ‘Hey neighbour’. And in doing that, maybe we’ll get a small insight into the way, Jesus said, God offers to treat us.

Penrith Council will remove 16 White Cedar trees from Emu Plains Cemetery after they were inspected and deemed to pose a risk to visitors. The cemetery which has historic significance has reached its capacity and is no longer available for new burials. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said the trees are likely to become increasingly hazardous if left unattended. “The health of the trees has suffered to a point that they pose a significant risk to visitors,” Cr Fowler said. “While the cemetery is now closed to any new burials, its historic significance sees many people visit the site and it is important for Council to maintain safe access. “The trees will be replaced with a suitable alternative to maintain the appearance of the cemetery.” The remaining trees will have deadwood pruned from them and their condition monitored to maintain the public’s safety. Work will commence in the coming weeks to remove the trees.

Penrith Council’s popular ‘By the River’ series of events are coming up, which started last month with Music by the River. All events celebrate our natural wonder – the Nepean River and are part of Council’s plan to activate the area. Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said the Our River Masterplan is a roadmap for how we protect and make the most of the river into the future, including connections to Penrith City Centre, enhancing its natural environment, nurturing a landscape that supports active, healthy lifestyles and celebrating its rich history and cultural values. Sunday Siestas returns on 18 October and 15 November. These markets, held at Tench Reserve between 11am and 4pm, include quality market stalls, free live music and family activities. How much of what we know is based on what we have heard from the media or hearsay rather than from the research? » 1 in 10 children have ADHD. » ADHD is NOT bad kids or bad parents. » ADHD is real. It is a neurodevelopmental disorder. Just like children with autism (1 in 100 children) or Down Syndrome (1 in 800 children), children with ADHD are born with unique challenges. Children with ADHD have trouble with: attention and focus; staying still; and making good choices. The ABSOLUTE BEST treatment for ADHD is medication. Forget everything you have heard in the media about how bad the medication is for kids. Just as children with diabetes or epilepsy require medication to be well, children with ADHD require medication to get the necessary chemicals into the frontal lobes of their brain so they can function better. Nothing else, not a good diet or alternative therapies or fish oil tablets, can get those chemicals into the frontal lobes. Medication is the only thing. Taking medication helps children with ADHD to focus and pay attention. This means that they have a better chance of learning, making friends, and enjoying the opportunities that other children have. The medication for ADHD has actually been around for 80 years and advances in medical research mean that there are more choices now. Research over the past 40 years has shown that children with ADHD who do not take medication are at a higher risk when they are adults of: drug and alcohol abuse; mental health problems; dropping out of school; unemployment; incarceration; car accidents; and relationship breakdown with family and peers. The NEXT BEST treatment for ADHD is positive parenting – things like Triple P. However, positive parenting does not work unless the child is taking medication. Without the medication, the child won’t have the attention span or working memory to listen or understand. Parents who have a child with ADHD have to battle the stigma of ADHD every day. As 1 in 10 children have ADHD, this stigma leaves a lot of people (children and their families) not feeling very good about themselves, and feeling isolated and alone. The stigma prevents parents from making the best possible choices about their child’s treatment. Parenting is a tough job. Parenting a child with ADHD is a tougher job. If you know a parent who has a child with ADHD, sometimes the best advice is an ear to listen and a heart to understand. If you know a child with ADHD, they having a problem, they are not the problem NCNS and parents from the ADHD Support Group will be at Westfield Penrith (Big W end) on the 13th, 14th, and 15th of October raising awareness about ADHD. On the 16th October, we will be holding an ADHD seminar for parents wanting to know more about ADHD.

Inspiration Drives Art at McCarthy

McCarthy Catholic College Year 12 Art students have again excelled in inspiration and technical expertise as their art work stunned visitors to a recent public exhibition. Year 12 Art teacher Monica Sharp expressed her pleasure with the creativity of the displayed art and commended her students for their stunning imagination and dedication to developing artistic skills. ‘From imaginative concept to completion of expression’ Mrs Sharp explained. Kaitlyn Meares drew inspiration from ‘How our natural reefs and oceans are being impacted by over fishing and pollution’. In ‘Reef Refuse’, Kaitlyn’s dark silhouetted forms represented environmental threats but her still life photography and ceramics represented the ‘whimsical beauty of nature’. For Chloe Skinner inspiration came from reflections about social isolation experienced by many, ‘when it is increasingly expected that we
are all electronically connected’. Her ‘Disconnected’ comprised dry point prints, photography and ceramic sculpture, which demonstrated a chilling sense of being alone. Ijada Peady drew inspiration from video games and ‘the frenzy of the alchemist at work’, while Brad Moore found it in ‘losing myself in the imagination of the artwork’, where he’ develops his own identity’. Audrey Sproule was inspired by ‘Michaelangelo’s brilliance’ and her art work showed the ‘intricacies of the human form, its working parts and movement’. However, Lili McGrath’s Birthday cards of ‘Absence’ was all about ‘expressing feelings through artwork’. The McCarthy Catholic College Year 12 students learnt as much about themselves, as they did about the technical skills of art expression. However, visitors to the exhibition were as taken with the artists’ inspiration, as they were by the fabulous artwork.

2x 500g Packets Potato Gnocchi 100g Butter 2-3 Garlic Cloves, Thinly Sliced 1/2 Cup Fresh Oregano Leaves

Cook gnocchi in a large saucepan of boiling water following packet directions. Drain. Return to pan. Meanwhile, heat the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat until just foaming. Add the garlic and season with salt and pepper. Simmer until the butter just starts to brown. Add the oregano to the butter mixture. Cook for a further 1 minute. Pour the butter mixture over the gnocchi and shake the pan to coat.

250g Milk Arrowroot Biscuits 125g Unsalted Butter, Melted, Plus Extra 1 Tbs Softened Unsalted Butter 1/2 Cup Sweetened Condensed Milk 1 Cup Desiccated Coconut Finely Grated Zest and Juice of 1 Lemon 2 Cups Pure Icing Sugar, Sifted Toasted Coconut Flakes, to Sprinkle

Grease and line a 20cm square pan with baking paper, leaving plenty overhanging the sides. Place biscuits in a food processor and whiz to fine crumbs. Add melted butter, condensed milk, desiccated coconut and lemon zest, then whiz until well combined. Press the mixture into the prepared pan and chill for 2 hours or until firm. For the icing, combine icing sugar, lemon juice and remaining 1 tbs softened butter in a bowl, stirring until smooth. Spread icing over slice and sprinkle with toasted flaked coconut. Allow to set for 1 hour, then slice into 12 rectangles.

Fox Rewrites Canoe History Again “It’s not something I try and think about, but it’s really special to defend a world title, and to win three in a row is awesome,” Fox said. “I’m a bit disappointed to be fourth in the K1, but I think it did motivate me for today.” Fox said the C1 competition has become a lot tougher since she first started her winning run three years ago. The discipline is not on the program for Rio next year, but is expected to be contested in Tokyo in 2020. “A lot of the girls are now specialising in C1, while I’m focusing on K1,” Fox said. “It’s definitely a lot more competitive.” In further good news for Australia, Victoria’s Jaxon Merritt missed the men’s K1 final but his result was good enough to secure Australia a start in the 2016 Olympics. “After having a good qualification run here, it does build my confidence a bit,” Merritt said. “But I’ve got to get faster. Those boys are going pretty quick.” Western Australia’s Robin Jeffery missed the final of the men’s C1, and also just finished outside an Olympic qualification position. “I made a mistake on number 11, and then went into my shell a bit,” Jeffery said. “I’m really disappointed with my response, so I’m absolutely gutted. But I’m really looking forward to trying to qualify a spot at the Continentals. “To make a top ten in such a great field is great for my confidence. Even before this race I knew that on my day I can make top five.” The teams finals followed the individual events with Fox winning a second gold medal in the women's C1 event alongside Borrows and Lawrence.

Core Strength Work for Chronic Lower Back Pain Due to Slipped Disc? If you’ve read some of my previous articles then you may have gleaned that tight inflamed muscle & connective tissues in and around the spine are the cause of most chronic back pain either directly or indirectly. And if you’ve suffered from chronic back pain then you may have come across someone spouting the conventional wisdom of ‘poor core strength as the problem that may have led to your sore back and that core strengthening may be the solution to back pain’. I regularly see clients who have come in with long standing ‘chronic’ back pain, many of whom have been doing prescribed core strengthening exercise religiously. In some cases these exercises helped for a while, in others not, either way their back pain has remained. This is because the core strength theory is fundamentally flawed. Here’s why. Although an inflamed back can be due to many causes let’s look at an acute injury such as a ruptured disc. When a person has such an injury of the spine, the back muscles and connective tissue swell, become inflamed and lock up around the injury. It’s a standard protective mechanism that’s described in many standard medical texts. Once the muscles inflame & tighten, in most cases they will remain that way (unless work is done specifically to de-inflame & lengthen the muscles) and if disc protrusion exists, it will likely remain protruded. Doing strength work of any type builds muscle but also causes muscles shortening and reduced range of motion unless regular stretching of the same muscles occurs. Doing core strengthening exercise will tighten core muscles so for a back injury involving a slipped disc (back tight maintaining disc in the protruded position) this is exactly the last thing one should do. Key to remediating this type of back injury is to do exactly the opposite. Completely stop core exercises, use manual therapy to de-inflame & lengthen all affected tissue carefully. Grief Journaling and Happiness: The Power of the Pen I’ve kept a journal since I was 14 years old, I have volumes of journals in my cupboards. I wrote through the death of my pets, my grandparents, my Dad, my children and friends. When I sit down I aim to write for 5 minutes but often end up writing for hours. I’ve always felt great after I finished writing and thought it was beneficial to my wellbeing. I always recommend to everyone to start journaling. The results are in‌ it’s good for you. Researchers did a study, where 100 engineers were sacked and 4 months later none of them had been reemployed. The researchers divided them into two groups. One group did nothing. The other group was asked to keep a journal, write for 20 minutes a day about all the painful emotions surrounding losing their job and the difficulties about applying for a new job. Three months later only 5% of the first group were reemployed and 26% of the other group had found jobs. Journal writing didn’t increase the quantity of interviews, it increased the quality of their job search. They drank less, felt less anger towards their old employer and 8 months later 52% were reemployed. It seemed that writing all the tough feelings helped lift the burden, whereas suppressing negative feelings is stressful. Researchers also found that people who write journals visit the doctor less. So, I’m thinking that it’s a good idea for you to start journaling now. Go out and buy yourself a beautiful book, a lovely pen and set the timer for 5 minutes and just start describing the sensations of your body to begin with and that could lead to writing about your emotions.

Is Now the Time to Invest? Everyone is talking about property at the moment. We’ve seen some fantastic gains in the market over the last few years and many people believe that there is still strong growth to come. Others believe that we’re nearing the end of the growth cycle and the market will be flat for the next few years. Still others believe that a property bubble is forming and it’s about to burst. Of course nobody has a crystal ball but the consensus amongst economists is that there is no property bubble. Given that there is still a considerable under supply of properties (in Sydney) and a low interest rate environment for the foreseeable future, property values should continue to grow. Of course an investment in property should be considered a long term investment which means that short term fluctuations in value are largely irrelevant. Instead of chasing short term capital gains which is largely out of your control, astute investors find opportunities in all market conditions by following a few simple rules. 1. Research. Know the market, determine demand for different property types, understand demographics, population movements and planned infrastructure upgrades. 2. Build an Investment Strategy. Start with the end in mind. What is it you want to achieve in the long term and build a strategy that will deliver. 3. Keep emotions under control. Investments should be made based on factual information. Falling in love with the wrong property could cost you and fear can make you pass on the opportunity of a lifetime. When emotion goes up, intellect goes down. 4. Manage your risks. All investments carry some risk they can be managed. A simple exercise is to write a list of everything you can think of that can go wrong. Then work through the list to mitigate each risk. You’ll be amazed at how much you can reduce your risk and the process can be quite cathartic. We love working with our investor clients and can help with each of these steps.
