Ava Makes History for School Local Ava Hagelburg recently competed at her first Arndell Anglican College Interschool Equestrian Carnival at Hawkesbury Showground in Clarendon, representing Emu Plains Public School with her horse, KT Sweet Dreams.

The dedicated year five student was the first ever competitor to represent her school in the sport of Equestrian Show Riding, making it one memorable moment for the local community.

“I was nervous but also excited to compete and represent Emu Plains Public School at the event” explained Ava. Ava has only been training with her Coach and step mum Chloe Smith seriously for six months. “She has shown the utmost dedication to her sport. Ava is up early to feed and pamper her animals and works at home to earn money to support her love of the sport” said Chloe.

With only a short time of riding, Ava’s enthusiasm has earned her a major sponsor in the equine field, Kaso Saddle Pads. Their generosity helped boost the local girl to the top of her category, earning her Overall Supreme Exhibit in the Novice ring at the Arndell Anglican College Interschool Equestrian Carnival. Ava’s horse KT Sweet Dreams AKA Kitty, was perfect with her guidance and beautifully presented by her Coach and step mum Chloe.

Finding a Place to Belong The Lower Mountains Neighbourhood Centre (LMNC) is based at the Blaxland Community Centre (just next door to the library) and has been providing services to the Lower Mountains community since 1981. It has a commitment to the enhancement of wellbeing, connection and belonging within the community.

Have you ever had an issue that you can’t resolve and wished you had one place to call? LMNC is a community hub with a wealth of information about services in the community. If they don’t know, they can help you find out.

Have you ever wanted to be more connected with other people? LMNC has a range of social and wellbeing groups that you can tap into. Their newest activity is their monthly pancake mornings for the whole family where you can drop in at 7:30am to 9:00am for a cuppa, a pancake and a chat! There are special events and programs such as workshops and the Blaxland disco for people living with a disability. The next Think BIG! It is an exciting time in LMNC’s history. They are soon to be joining with the Mid Mountains and Katoomba Neighbourhood Centres to form one organisation called Belong Blue Mountains.

Each neighbourhood centre will continue to provide a safe and welcoming place for people to connect with each other, find the information that they need, and find a sense of belonging.

Glenbrook might be a long way from the bright lights and tinsel of Hollywood, but it’s now a place to call home for Emma Barnet, local florist and owner of Flower Empire, who has spent many years working in the Costume Department in the film and television industry.

Emma’s roles were as a Costume Buyer, Costume Artist (special finishes) and Costume Stand-By on set, with her list of credits to rival any A-List celebrity. This included the feature films Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Superman, Wolverine, Australia, Great Gatsby, Mad Max: Fury Road and The Night We Called It A Day. Her television credits include Home and Away, All Saints, Young Lions, Wonderland, Puberty Blues, A Place to Call Home, Love Child and Doctor Doctor whilst she has worked on the mini series Mary Bryant, Alan Bond, Natalie Wood and The Silence.

“What I’ve enjoyed most about the movie industry is working in a team of mixed professions, whether it be make-up or the camera department, collaborating with the creatives and working with the actors. It’s always inspirational and your work place is always different with story telling and creating a makebelieve world for people to get lost in” claimed Emma.

“My favourite memory was working on the Harry Potter set in London on the Diagon Alley scene which was filled with witches and wizards, owls and magic wands. I love working with historical costumes and my preference is to re-create clothing and a look from another time. Working on the set of Wolverine, where a Japanese snow village was recreated with Wolverine on the roof of a truck hurtling through the village in a snow storm was also a scene I will never forget!” she said.

Flowers, family and lifestyle helped in Emma’s decision to become a florist and open Flower Empire. She can now be near her home doing something that she loves and flexible with her career so that she can keep her hand in the costume industry.

Emma has had her flowers feature on several television series, allowing her to cross over into both the creative industries she loves.

“Working with flowers is a joy and I love being around nature and making people happy. My other passion is teaching floristry workshops at Flower Empire. The courses available are floral crowns, bouquets, wedding flowers, Xmas wreaths and terrariums” she ended.

Keep Informed of the New Nepean River Bridge Opening

Work is continuing to surge ahead on the new pedestrian and cyclist bridge across the Nepean River at Penrith with the bridge on track to open later this year.

Stuart Ayres said the new bridge is now clearly visible all the way across the Nepean River, with crews continuing to carry out work on either side of the bridge to complete the project.

“With work on the pedestrian and cyclist bridge quickly nearing completion, I encourage the community to sign up to be kept updated” Stuart Ayres said.

Submissions for the naming of the new Nepean River Bridge closed on Sunday 29 July and a bridge naming committee has been established and will now name the bridge.

“A number of milestones for the bridge have been met this year and the naming is just another step towards providing the newest piece of active transport infrastructure in the region” Stuart Ayres said.

Whenever I want a belly laugh I look at one of his videos, he is so cute. He is very fond of ‘pep talks’. One of his videos is ’20 things we should say more often’.

I am not funny like Kid President, and I’m not fond of corndogs, but here are my top 20 things parents should do if they want to be happier parents (in no particular order): 1. Get rid of ‘good boy’, ‘good girl’, and ‘good job’. Use descriptive praise instead.

2. Get rid of ‘naughty’ and ‘bad’. Tell your child what s/he has done wrong, and what to do instead.

3. Avoid ‘don’t’, ‘stop’, ‘no’, ‘quit’, and ‘not’. Tell your child what s/ he has done wrong, and what to do instead.

4. Give your child a minimum of 12 hugs per day, whether s/ he deserves it or not (that’s called unconditional love).

5. Avoid questions if your child has no option. “Would you like to hold my hand in the car park?� “No thanks Mum/Dad�.

6. Be a good role model. ‘Do as I say not as I do’ doesn’t work any more in this age of savvy bright sparks.

7. Be consistent, immediate, and decisive.

8. Be assertive (not passive or aggressive) and stand up for yourself in a kind way. They are looking at (and learning from) you.

9. You can set limits and boundaries for your kids. You don’t need to be mean.

10.

Screens are a privilege not a right. I don’t know how my generation ever survived without screens. Oh yeah, we played outside, a lot.

11.

Have dinner together. Ditch the screens at dinner time.

12.

If behaviour is predictable (happens a lot), it’s preventable.

13.

The more attention you pay to negative behaviour, the more of it you will get. Focus on the positives.

14.

Take responsibility for your own thoughts, feelings and actions.

15.

Make consequences related to the mistaken behaviour.

16.

Kids aren’t allowed to hit you. If they do, they learn that they can get their own way through violence.

17.

Teach your kids to breathe. In through the nose, hold, out through the nose, hold.

18.

After teaching them to breathe, teach them how to problem solve.

19.

Sing, dance, play, laugh. Look after yourself.

20.

Do Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) because it’s regarded by the United Nations as the best parenting course in the world, and it’s Aussie made. And it’s cool.

The Importance of Reading Did you know research shows that learning to read is one of the most significant factors in school achievement and that early exposure to books and stories greatly contributes to success in initial literacy? There are strong links between literacy, school

performance, self-esteem and opportunities in life - with poor literacy skills being linked with lower education, earnings, health and social outcomes.

When we read, we look at and comprehend the meaning of written or printed matter by mentally interpreting the characters or symbols of which it is composed. Sounds easy, right? From birth, children are developing their talking and listening skills. These skills provide the foundation for reading and writing. Before school, some children may identify familiar letters, repeat rhymes and songs, ask for the same book to be read over and over, and start to make writing marks on all kinds of surfaces (much to their parent’s distress). This is proof that they are well on their way to becoming readers and writers way before school even begins.

If you want to encourage children to develop their literacy skills and embrace a love of reading from a young age, here are a few suggestions: • Read to your child every day • Let your child see you read for enjoyment and for information • Allow your child to ‘read’ to you using the pictures or their memory • Expose your child to many books – letting them just open them, look at them and manipulate them • Visit the public library • Observe, note and read signs, logos and other environmental print • Talk, discuss and ask questions – encourage your child to do the same • Most of all - make it fun!

Lemon Chicken Noodle Salad Ingredients 500g chicken breast fillets, thinly sliced 1 stem lemongrass, pale section only, finely chopped 1 teaspoon finely grated lemon rind 1/2 teaspoon turmeric 2 long fresh red chillies, deseeded, finely chopped 80ml (1/3 cup) fresh lemon juice 100g dried egg noodles 1 small red onion, thinly sliced 150g sugar snap peas, thinly sliced diagonally 1/4 small red cabbage, shredded 100g grape tomatoes, halved 1 cup fresh mint leaves 1 cup fresh coriander leaves 2 teaspoons fish sauce 2 teaspoons brown sugar Preparation 1. Combine the chicken, lemongrass, lemon rind, turmeric, half the chilli and 2 tablespoons lemon juice in a shallow glass bowl. Cover and place in the fridge for 30 minutes to marinate.

2. Cook the noodles following the packet directions or until tender. Drain. Refresh under cold running water.

3. Heat a large wok over high heat and spray with oil. Stirfry the chicken for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through. Transfer to a large bowl.

4. Add the noodles, onion, sugar snap peas, cabbage, tomato, mint and coriander to the chicken. Combine fish sauce, sugar, remaining chilli and 2 tablespoons lemon juice in a small bowl. 10-Minute Choc-Caramel Mini Cheesecake Cookie Sandwiches Ingredients 250g cream cheese, softened 1/4 cup icing sugar mixture 12 Ultimate 40% Choc Chip Cookies 1/2 cup salted caramel topping 100g dark chocolate, melted Preparation 1. Using an electric mixer, beat cream cheese and sugar for 1 minute or until smooth. Place in a piping bag fitted with a 1.5cm fluted nozzle.

2. Pipe cream cheese mixture onto flat side of half the cookies.

Drizzle with caramel topping. Top with remaining cookies.

Emu Plains Lions were at Specsavers in Westfield Plaza Penrith when they launched their audiology service last month.

Specsavers are progressively rolling out their audiology service across Australia and the Penrith store is the 52nd to offer the service.

1 in 6 Australians experience hearing loss, but only 1 in 3 do anything about it. At Specsavers, they believe the basic necessity of hearing should be accessible to all.

Audiologist Ravneet Kaur, will be offering the audiology service at Specsavers Penrith and Penrith Nepean and Specsavers is encouraging all locals who might have concerns about their hearing to book a free 15-minute hearing check. “At the moment it takes most Australians 7-10 years to acknowledge they have hearing loss before they do anything to help it – if they do anything at all. During these years, I have personally seen so many cases where hearing loss affects a person’s confidence and independence. The individual becomes embarrassed at having difficulty joining in on conversations, so they back away from social engagements and start to become isolated.

As we all know, social isolation and a lack of independence can lead to a whole range of both mental and physical conditions, especially if the individual is older”.

Many of us have an inner desire to be a great cook, but just don’t know where to start. Well that can all change, now that passionate foodie Meryl Butterworth has opened Relish Cooking School right on our very own door step. The exciting cooking school has just celebrated it’s first birthday and is already proving a popular destination to improve your culinary skills.

“I love food and have a training and development background (among many other things). Before starting the school, I published a bestselling book with a friend of mine called ‘Local Heroes, a foodie’s guide to the Blue Mountains’.

After this project, I wanted to take my passion for food to a whole new level and after studying to become a qualified chef a few years ago, I decided to start the cooking school. It’s been great to be able to share my love of food with others in the relaxed environment of my own home kitchen” explained Meryl.

The cooking school specialises in small group classes, with a maximum of 8 people and they have also just started doing corporate classes. They currently have 2 classes running which are hands on and very relaxed. There is an Italian Long Lunch class where you can make pasta from scratch among other traditional dishes and a Thai Long Lunch Essentials class which teaches about balancing flavours and making some of your Thai favourites. Once all the prep is over and the dishes are ready to eat, everyone sits down to a lovely feast of their own creations!

NSAIDs - Can They Increase Your Risk Of Gastric & Duodenal Ulcers?

Stomach & duodenal ulceration & bleeding is a well-known side effect of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) including aspirin, and a major limitation to long-term use. Wallace published the following statistics (relating mainly to the older NSAIDs) in 2000: 1. ‘$8 billion’ is the estimated global value of NSAIDs sales p.a., but 2. The global ‘cost of treating gastrointestinal adverse effects of NSAIDs almost certainly exceeds this’ 3. So why doesn’t the stomach digest itself? Answer: The stomach continually produces substances called ‘prostaglandins’ that activate almost all the processes by which the stomach protects itself from acid, enzymes, pathogens & physical damage (Laine L etal, 2008 p46).

NSAIDs cause gastrointestinal bleeding mainly by lowering production of prostaglandins, thereby stopping normal protection and healing of damaged stomach lining. The stomach has two enzymes that make prostaglandins, COX 1 & 2. COX 1 makes prostaglandins 24 hrs per day to activate stomach protective mechanisms. COX 2 only makes prostaglandins when damage has occurred & promotes healing of stomach lining.

Older NSAIDs such as ibuprofen naproxen and indomethacin block both COX 1 & 2 and cause high rates of stomach lesions.

Newer NSAIDs are selective for COX 2 only.

Although, Dirni (2017) states NSAIDs that block ‘COX-2 may also play a role in mucosal injury’ COX 2, selective NSAIDs are generally considered minimise stomach lining damage. However, these NSIADs definitely stop healing of stomach lining whenever any damage does occur e.g. from drinking alcohol.

Although risk varies, all NSAIDs cause some gastrointestinal toxicity. ‘Large pooled data from placebo-controlled trials show that all evaluated NSAIDs including COX-2 inhibitors, diclofenac, ibuprofen and naproxen were associated with an increased risk of gastrointestinal injury‘.

The journal ‘Australian Prescriber’ says ‘Gastrointestinal toxicity with NSAIDs, including low-dose aspirin, is highest in patients with risk factors’. Patients should be aware of their own risk factors. ‘These include increased age (>65 years), past history of peptic ulcer disease, heart disease, and co-prescription of antiplatelets, corticosteroids and anticoagulants. In addition, using higher doses of NSAIDs leads to an increased risk of upper gastrointestinal complications. Prolonged NSAID use and H. pylori infection also’ increases risk of gastrointestinal toxicity.

Finally, they state ‘NSAIDs use should be at the lowest possible dose and for the shortest time’.

Nitric oxide (NO), produced naturally in the stomach from nitrate containing foods (e.g. beetroot juice) may help avert damage. NO mimics prostaglandin functions, and may help maintain stomach lining during NSAID use.

Carly Hopkins Carly has been veterinary nursing since 2002, completing her studies in 2006.

Carly started working at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in 2010 and left for maternity leave in 2011. After 5 years as a stay at home mum, Carly is very excited to be back working with the team.

Carly has 3 fur babies, Jessie a 13 year old German Shepherd, Hemi a 7 year old BullTerrier and Dixie a 1 year old Swiss Shepherd.

In her spare time, Carly loves spending time with her family, going to the beach, going to concerts and walking her fur babies.

National Veterinary Nurseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day On Friday 12th October 2018 we plan to celebrate National Veterinary Nurseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital.

It is great to acknowledge the hard work and efforts of our veterinary nurses. The nurses do a lot of work behind the scenes that you do not see or hear about. The nurses monitor the patients whilst under general anaesthetic, medicate animals whilst in hospital, answer enquiries, clean the hospital, and ensure the smooth running of the veterinary hospital. Without the veterinary nurses, we would not be able to do our job as a veterinarian.

We plan to celebrate by having a long lunch with enough food to feed an army.

We have 8 nurses at the hospital, and I hope you get to know them as you come and visit our hospital.

Sophie Mead Sophie has been completing her TAFE work experience with us for her Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing since June 2016, and joined our team in October 2016 as a Kennel Hand.

Sophie started a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Advanced Studies majoring in Animal and Veterinary Bioscience at Sydney University in Feb 2018, with the aspiration of becoming a veterinarian. We are so proud of Sophie!

Sophie has owned a variety of pets throughout her life but has always had a particular fondness for the cats in the family. At the moment, Sophie has 2 dogs (Teddy and Trixie), as well as her 3 very spoiled cats (Angus, Casper and Tallulah).

Orchard Hills has become a second home to Sophie, and she loves being able to see the smiling faces of colleagues, clients, and patients alike.

Renai Lewis â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Practice Manager Renai has grown up in the Penrith area and has seen many changes over the years.

Renai joined the team in August 2014 where she was warmly welcomed by all.

Renai has several furbabies including: Alli (Golden Labrador), Cooper (a naughty Labrador), Lenny (a cat) and Flick (a Lorikeet).

Renai adores her pets and spends every spare minute with them, when she is not busy being a wife and mum to 4 adult children.

Chelsea Burcher Chelsea completed her Certificate IV in veterinary nursing at Richmond TAFE in June 2018. She started her work placement at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in January 2017 and joined our team in August 2017.

Chelsea has always wanted to work with animals since a young age and has one dog, Meg an 8 year old Jack Russell Terrier.

Chelsea loves working at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital and being part of the team. She is excited to see what the future holds.

Lizzie De Jonge Lizzie completed the Veterinary Nursing Certificate IV in July 2016.

Lizzie is currently studying the Certificate IV in Companion Animal Services at the Delta Institute, which is an animal behaviour and training course.

Lizzie began teaching the Puppy Preschool at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in Dec 2015. Lizzie is enjoying the study and the hands on experience with Puppy Preschool.

Lizzie has had many animals during her life time, at the moment she has 4 cats (Moo Cow, Donut, Chilli and Chicken), and a Labrador cross (Sonny).

Lachlan De Giorgio Lachlan started work at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in December 2017 after completing a week of work experience.

Lachlan is currently in year 11 at high school and is really interested in agriculture and all things to do with animals.

He has a dog named Chloe and a bird named Bob. Lachlan loves playing sport.

He always looks forward to coming to work to help people and see smiles on faces. Lachlan is excited to be part of the team.

Rachel Galdes Rachel graduated as a Veterinary Nurse in December 2012 at Richmond TAFE. She enjoys spending time with her friends and family when she is not at work. Rachel has a much loved Labrador Molly, and Jinx the cat.

Rachel teaches the Puppy Preschool at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital.

Riley has a naughty Labrador named Baxter, and a cat named Waffles.

Riley has always been very passionate about the animal industry.

Marty â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Heart and Soul of Emu Plains Cricket Club Emu Plains Cricket Club recently commenced the 2018/19 season with the defending 1st Grade Premiers taking on Springwood at Dukes Oval.

The most successful Club in the history of the NDCA winning the 1st Grade Evans Shield 22 times, the current 1st Grade side has had one common denominator for the past 28 seasons; Captain Marty Romer.

Marty commenced with the Club in the 1990/91 season, which was the last season the Club did not have a 1st Grade side entered into the competition. The team won 2nd Grade that season and was promoted to 1st Grade in 1991/92. Since then, mostly under Marty's leadership, the Club has won the Evans Shield 8 times highlighted by three successive wins between 2012/13 and 2014/15.

In his 29 seasons at Emu Plains Cricket Club, Marty has played in 355 matches, scored 6056 runs, and taken 542 wickets. He has also worked tirelessly for the Club in coaching and developing younger players and is currently coaching his 4th junior team after coaching three teams all the way from under 9s to under 16s. Marty has played alongside over 160 players in that 1st Grade team including his own sons, Tom and Ben. Marty is a true legend of cricket in the Nepean District and Emu Plains Cricket Club is proud of his many achievements in the game. Governments Need Help I thought the second last week of August would be a fairly regular week. But by the Friday we had a new Prime Minister â&#x20AC;&#x201C; again. It seemed every time I caught some news another great leap had taken place. It can be unsettling, confusing, maybe even laughable.

And it reminded me again that our Governments need help.

The decision makers in Canberra or Macquarie St or Penrith â&#x20AC;&#x201C; theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re people like us. They have their strengths and their weaknesses. They can go about what they do with the best of intentions â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and still get it wrong. At the same time too, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got lots to be thankful for â&#x20AC;&#x201C; as a country with so much.

But where will the help Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m talking about come from? Global corporations perhaps? Some of them are bigger than whole countries these days. But no, they suffer all the same problems

as Governments.

No, the help our Governments need comes from the one who governs Governments. I say that because when Paul was writing to followers of Jesus in the Bible, and teaching them what to pray, he said to pray for kings and all those in authority (1 Timothy 2:2). Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s saying, ask God to work in our Governments.

Ask Him to help them make wise decisions. Ask Him to help them steer away from self-interest. Ask Him to guide them to make decisions that protect the vulnerable. Ask Him to guide them so we can live with each other, and live in peace.

The Bible tells us this world is in Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hands. But he gives us the privilege to ask for what we need. And we need good Government. So, the Churches Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve gone to for the last 30 years have made that a pattern.

I can remember piecing together the first publication of 2018, and here we are, with only 2 more issues before Christmas arrives!

I find October to be the month when reality sets in. Whether it's the warmer weather, the increased number of social festivities, school events ramping up, or the Christmas decorations starting to pop up in every shop you enter... there's no denying that Christmas is just around the corner [again!].
