Exciting Times Ahead For Emu Hall

A development application has been lodged for Emu Hall in Emu Plains by local company Stimson and Baker Planning. The proposal is to convert the existing house into a restaurant and to construct additional buildings on the site to provide for a central kitchen and a function centre to accommodate approximately 260 people. An upgrade to the gardens around the buildings is also planned for Emu Hall.

Stimson and Baker Planning are hoping to get approval for the project very early next year. From there, they anticipate that the redeveloped Emu Hall would be operating in the final quarter of 2017.

“The client is a local resident, who has an obvious passion for introducing this venue to the Penrith area. I have enjoyed working with him on his vision and also with the Council.

New Prison To Boost Western Sydney Jobs

Western Sydney will house the latest ‘rapid build’ prison in Emu Plains which will stimulate the area’s economy and provide local jobs.

This is the third of four innovative dormitory-style facilities to be approved for construction by the NSW Government. The expansion is part of the $3.8 billion plan in response to the rising prison population as well as to better manage and reform inmates.

Minister for Correctives David Elliott said the ‘rapid build’ prison will be on the same site as the Emu Plains Correctional Centre but act as a separate facility.

“This new prison can hold 400 maximum security inmates and will create 220 jobs,” Mr Elliott said. “The benefit of a ‘rapid built’ prison is its ability to allow the government to quickly respond to the rising prison population while being an investment in community safety.”

‘Rapid build’ prisons have four wings each with four pods of 25 inmates.

Some of the prison’s key features include first-floor corridors with operable windows overlooking the pods and infra-red cameras for night monitoring. An Immediate Action Team are based in the facility to provide a 24/7 response to incidents.

Wellington and Cessnock will also have similar facilities while a fourth site is yet to be determined.

Corrective Services NSW (CSNSW) Commissioner Peter Severin said these centres allow inmates to complete programs vital to their rehabilitation.

“There is a library and a computer room in each dormitory and inmates will be engaged in activities for up to 12 hours a day,” Commissioner Severin said. “The programs are geared toward reducing reoffending and gaining job based skills.”

Talk To Community First Says Mayor John Thain Last month, Penrith Mayor John Thain said that the NSW Department of Corrections needs to ask the Penrith community what they think about a proposed prison to house 640 maximum security inmates on the same site as the Emu Plains Correctional Centre.

The Emu Plains Correctional Centre is currently a minimum security institution for females with special programs including pre-release, mothers and children, mobile outreach and circle of love, a quilt making project for hospitals and bereaved parents.

The new prison will host 400 maximum security male inmates (announced last month) and 240 maximum security female inmates (announced August this year).

“Minister for Correctives David Elliott made the announcement of the 400 maximum security male inmates last month without any prior notice to Council,” Mayor Thain said.

“Apart from recognised flooding issues on the proposed site, I am concerned, and I encourage local residents to be, at the

potential impact of a maximum security prison on the social fabric of our community.

“As the State Government has had limited contact with Council on this issue I want them to take that further and to talk to our community about their proposal before they come to us.

“It may be unusual to do this but I want the Government to gauge the community’s appetite for this maximum security prison before they come to Council.

“I don’t want the Government going to the community and giving the impression that they have consulted in any way with Council on this.”

According to NSW Government News the Government approved the Emu Plains ‘rapid build’ prison last month and a construction contract will soon be awarded.

“We need to send a unified message to the State Government that this prison is not acceptable,” Mayor Thain said.

Who Am I? A few years ago Steve Carter was browsing through a missing children’s website. A media story had stirred his interest, but he wasn’t prepared for what he found. After a couple of clicks through the profiles he found himself! What he saw in front of him was a computer generated and aged picture of a boy who’d been reported missing, aged four. Now he knew he’d been adopted from an orphanage around the same time but what unfolded was that his biological father had reported him missing after his mother took Steve for a walk and neither she nor he returned.

Imagine that experience, out of the blue, and unprepared, finding out you weren’t who you thought you were, discovering that you had a whole story that shaped your identity of which you weren’t even aware.

Many people have had a similar experience when they’ve opened the pages of the Bible. In it God tells us we’re made in his image. It doesn’t mean we look alike, after all, you can’t see God. But it does mean we’ve been given a great honour. We’re unique in all of his creation. And we’re made to rule over God’s creation under Him. And we’re made to relate to one another.

Even better, we’re made to relate to Him – the image, with the one whose image we bear.

If you’ve ever wondered who you are this is the key, we were made in God’s image. And that identity should give us our meaning and purpose in life, we were made to live for and serve

Him. And I haven’t even got to the Jesus bit yet! That’ll have to wait for next time, in the Christmas edition . . .

Continuing Our Series on Parent Traps…

The beliefs and expectations held by parents can make their job more difficult. Some of these beliefs are: It’s just a phase, all kids do it, don’t they?

Certainly some child behaviour is related to their age.

For example, young children under the age of 4 years have difficulty sharing because they are egocentric and they haven’t developed ‘theory of mind’ (the realisation that other people have thoughts and feelings of their own).

This doesn’t mean that you don’t address the behaviour by communicating boundaries and limits. It is still our job as parents to deal with mistaken behaviour immediately and to consistently apply consequences. The consequences do not need to be harsh (yelling, smacking, extensive time-outs), but they do need to be consistent.

If you think the behaviour is just a phase, it may stop you from dealing with it at the time, and it can become more severe.

They are doing it deliberately to annoy me.

Most children do not behave in certain ways to deliberately upset you. Most of the time, they do things because they don’t remember previous lessons, or they are lost in their own world.

Dr Becky Bailey, a clinical psychologist in the USA, says that you usually have to repeat an instruction about 2000 times before the child integrates it into his/her routine.

Thinking that a child is behaving deliberately will make you more angry, and there is a chance that you will overreact with harsh discipline, and shame your child (focus on ‘who’ he is, rather than ‘what’ he did).

Children need support and encouragement for a long time before they learn how to be a fully functioning human. They do not develop their adult brain until the age of 25 years.

Thinking that our children are being wilful, manipulative, or wicked in a given situation does not allow you to have a clear and calm mind, or enable you to think about how you can contribute to your child’s success and teach him/her new skills and behaviours.

Wiggles And Giggles Annual Art Exhibition

Wiggles and Giggles Childcare Centre in Leonay recently held their 4th Annual Art Exhibition to help raise much needed funds for Westmead Children’s Hospital.

The Annual Art Exhibition was carefully planned several weeks before the event was held, with all of the children very busy creating four amazing artworks each to be displayed and then sold to their parents to help raise funds.

The night was a huge success that was supported by the local community. Family and friends were in attendance, with a giant raffle with over 80 prizes donated by local businesses, a cake stall, BBQ and a very special visit from Bandage Bear, who made the trip out from Westmead Children’s Hospital.

Wiggles and Giggles helped to raise over $4,500 from the Annual Art Exhibition, with the owners of the centre pledging to match every dollar raised which took the grand total to $9,000.

The aim of the night was not only to raise funds, but also to teach the children the importance of helping others that are less fortunate than themselves. A Beanie For Each Year The Lions Club of Emu Plains recently presented 100 beanies to the staff of the Oncology unit of Nepean Hospital for their patients undergoing treatment, coordinated through Our Community Cares (Cancer Council) and as a consequence of a specific donation by local businessman, Graeme ‘Spud’ Murphy and KIS Industrial, of Peachtree industrial estate.

The presentation also marks Lions centennial celebrations, for a worldwide century of Lions International community service.

WHAT’S COOKING

Santa Hat Brownies Easy • Time 45 min • Serves 16

Ingredients • 1 1/2 cups Coles Brand Cooking Chocolate Dark Buttons • 1 Coles Create & Bake Chocolate Brownie Mix • 3 Eggs • 2 tbsp (40ml) Water • 200 g Butter, melted

• 19 cm Square Cake Tin • 1 pack Coles Create & Bake Vanilla Icing Mix • 125 g Coles Brand Cream Cheese • 40 g Butter, softened • 16 Strawberries, hulled

Method 1. Preheat oven to 180°c (160°c fan forced). Lightly grease & line the base & sides of a 25cm square cake tin.

2. In a large bowl, combine 1 cup of the chocolate buttons, brownie mix, eggs, water & butter. Mix with a large spoon until well combined.

3. Spoon mixture into prepared pan, smooth top. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean.

Allow to cool in the tin for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. Use a 4cm round cutter to cut 16 rounds.

4. In a small heatproof bowl, add the remaining ½ cup of dark chocolate buttons, & set over a saucepan half-filled with simmering water. Stir with a metal spoon until melted, then drop a little chocolate on the cut-side of each strawberry & place on top of the brownie.

5. To prepare the icing, combine the icing mix, cream cheese & butter. Using an electric mixer, mix on low speed for 30 seconds or until combined, increasing speed to high & mixing for a further 1 to 2 minutes until light & creamy.

6. Transfer icing to a piping bag fitted with a small round nozzle, pipe icing around the base of the strawberries & a small dot on top to create the santa hat trimming & pom poms. http://recipes.coles.com.au/recipes/3332/santa-hat-brownies/

Reindeer Treats Easy • Time 25 min • Makes 12

Ingredients • 4 Tbsp. Butter • 1 bag Miniature Marshmallows • 1 tsp. Vanilla • 6 Cups Cocoa Krispies • 24 Pretzel Twists (more to allow for breaking) • Red and Brown M&Ms • White Icing Method 1. Melt the butter and marshmallows over medium heat.

2. Once melted, stir in vanilla. Remove from heat and add Cocoa Krispies.

3. Stir until well coated with marshmallow mixture.

Blue Mountains Cancer Help (BMCH) is a locally based charity, unique in NSW, established to provide support for residents in the Blue Mountains and Penrith Valley area, who have been diagnosed with cancer. BMCH is funded through its Op-Shops in Katoomba and Penrith, fundraising, bequests and donations.

Since its inception in 2005, BMCH has seen and assessed over 700 clients and are currently actively supporting over 350 clients and their families through subsidized therapies, support groups and programs such as Living Well with Cancer.

One of the members of BMCH is Susan Oxenham, a resident of Emu Plains. Susan is a local artist who has been dealing with Cancer for many years now along with being vision and hearing impaired. Susan recently joined BMCH and is currently participating in the 12 week Living Well with Cancer program.

Susan is thoroughly enjoying all that she is learning from the program and having the group support each week. Susan recently won first prize for her artwork at the Penrith Show and was delighted to be able to share her artwork with the group and lift their spirits. Susan has said there are big companies that offer information but BMCH is real. BMCH really help.

Susan also enjoys receiving the monthly newsletter advising upcoming events and groups and is able to use her software to find out what is happening. She is so pleased that she can do this independently.

Vitamin D – Does It Really Help Bone Density?

Vitamin D isn’t strictly a vitamin. It’s actually a steroid-likehormone called a secosteroid. When UVB radiation from sunlight hits skin cells, it converts (a form of ) cholesterol into vitamin D. So how does vitamin D help build bone?

Vitamin D helps ensure the blood calcium levels remain normal.

When blood calcium drops the active form of vitamin D increases three things: 1. intestinal absorption of dietary calcium 2. the reuptake of Calcium from urine in the kidneys 3. removal of calcium from bone (when insufficient dietary calcium) So if you have enough calcium in your diet, vitamin D helps calcium into the blood stream for delivery to mineralising bone. But vitamin D can’t help build bone if dietary calcium is inadequate. Vitamin D also increases production of the main calcium-binding-protein in bone. But the ‘Sunshine Vitamin’’ is much more than a bone builder. It actually activates (or represses) the function of at least 913 genes, and possibly affects expression of as many as 27000. So it’s a big hitter for health!!

So who needs vitamin D? Everyone! But unfortunately just under 25% (or 4 million) Aussie adults, have a vitamin D deficiency. So how do we best get vitamin D? And is vitamin D from supplements that same as from sunshine?

The simple answer is that vitamin D is best gotten from the

Sun! There are a number of complex reasons for this, but in short Vitamin D from the skin is in a chemical form (sulphated) that makes it water soluble & more bioavailable than non-sulphated supplemental forms. Sun derived vitamin D also lasts twice as long in the blood stream.

A person wearing a bathing suit who has just enough sun to get a slight pinkness to the skin 24 h after exposure (takes 1020mins & called 1 erythemal dose), makes between 10,000 and 25,000 IU of vitamin D. But vitamin D is only made between 10am and 3pm in spring, summer, and autumn, so you need to go out around midday!

But what about sun exposure & skin cancer? Although UV radiation can damage skin, both active vitamin D (and lumisterol 3) produced in the skin actually protect skin cells from UV damage, via a newly discovered (quick acting) pathway. So getting a little bit of UV isn’t so bad. Just don’t get really burnt!

So what does Vitamin D do in real people’s bones? Well, in a 2-year trial, osteoporotic postmenopausal women on a ‘calciumadequate diet’ given 75Îźg of vitamin D daily, had an increase in bone density of .38%. Women given vitamins D (75Îźg) plus K (45mg) daily, increased their bone density even more – almost 1.5%!! Women just given 615mg of extra calcium actually lost .79% in bone density.

Displaying Photos of Loved Ones Who Have Died I never thought photos of my children who have died would create such controversy.

Recently we had friends over who didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know our familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s early stories. I have photos all down my hallway that tells our family history.

They were interested in all the photos, Daniel asked, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Why do you have so many photos of children?â&#x20AC;? I explained that they were our children. He was quite interested but Erin sat quietly in the lounge room drinking her tea and didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t join the discussion.

The next day Daniel told me that Erin thought it disgusting that I had photos of dead children on the wall to talk about them.

This perplexed me as she isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t indigenous and doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have any religious beliefs.

I explained to Erin why it was important for others and me.

through memories and the impact they had in our lives.

To remember them. Our memory of them gets older and our brain wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t remember them as vividly.

To tell stories and carry the history of the family down the generations.

Photos can make you sad, laugh, cry and smile. Memories can flood back in a split second and a whole story emerges.

You donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to display photos of your loved ones but donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t lock them away just because someone is uncomfortable with your decision to show them.

Let’s Make It As Safe As We Can

It’s been a long cold winter, but with daylight savings finally here and longer, warmer days, it’s finally feeling like summer is just around the corner – and with it comes both good and bad news……

The good news first…. this year’s National Drowning Report 2016 released by Royal Life Saving in September announced a decrease in the number of children aged 0-4 drowning between July 2015 and June 2016, and a decrease in the number of drowning deaths at Inland Waterways – very encouraging statistics!

The bad news is, there is still much work to be done, as 280 people still lost their lives during the reported period in Australia, including 9 children under the age of 14 drowning in NSW alone, with most in backyard swimming pools. NSW recorded the highest number of drownings than any other state with 96 deaths, and males accounted for 91% of all drowning deaths in NSW. 27% of all people who drowned were swimming or playing in the water just prior to drowning. Drowning occurred all year round but more often in our leisure time – summer and weekends – peaking in January during warmer weather, and with more deaths recorded on Sundays than any other day of the week. Almost half (45%) of all drowning deaths occurred in the afternoon between midday and 6pm.

Sadly, it is not just our littlest children at risk, with eleven children aged 5-14 years drowning this past year. Although this was a decrease against the 10 year average, these tragic events reinforce the importance of all children learning swimming and water safety skills. Each drowning death is a personal story, impacting on families, friends and communities. And that impact was felt 280 times in the last period – a number that is far too high, and doesn’t consider the much higher number of near fatality’s that result in significant lifelong brain damage.

So let’s look forward to summer, and all the fun in and around the water it will bring, but let’s also, as a community, keep safety at the forefront of our minds at all times, and try to reduce these statistics locally. Image Supplied

Wil On The Way Leonay Golf Club is fast proving to be a breeding ground for young Australian golfers ready to take on the world, with local Wil Arnold the latest to chase his dreams overseas in the US. Introduced to golf by his Dad at around 4 or 5 years of age, Wil started playing competitively at 12 years old with a handicap of 27. He was a member at both Leonay and Penrith Golf Clubs throughout his junior career and has played in the Jack Newton Junior Golf Tournaments and Junior Pennants.

Wil’s first year of college golf at Hutchinson Community College in Kansas was impressive. In his first tournament, he finished T24 with a second round of 5 under, 67. This later followed with his first college tournament win in the First Jayhawk Conference Tournament of 2016 at Colbert Hills Golf Club in the Spring semester. The team also played in the 2016 Division 1 NJCAA Championships (Nationals) in Melbourne, Florida at the end of the semester. They finished 8th overall and Wil finished T37 against the best junior college players in America, where his National Junior College Ranking was 69th.

“Over my first year, I gained a lot of very valuable experiences on the golf course and learnt a lot about my game” explained Wil.
