The Power of Words With a video that has reached over 2.5 million people through the Department of Education’s Facebook page, liked by over 1 million people and shared over 14,800 times, Nepean Creative and Performing Arts High School’s new anti-bullying video clip has a powerful message for all.

“The video clip is one of several planned and created for this year to support discussion on positive, and supportive behaviours that can empower students and decrease bullying. These video resources complement the curriculum resources and information provided for teachers, students and parents on the www.antibullying.nsw. gov.au website launched at the start of Term 3 this year” explained a New South Wales Department of Education spokesperson.

The Carriages of Emu Plains

Horses were a prevalent part of the Australian way of life at the turn of the 20th century. They provided the most common mode of transportation. In 1918, the horse population peaked with an estimated 2,527,149 horses in the country, nearly one horse to every two persons.

Horse-drawn vehicles were everywhere. The stylish and light four wheeled buggies, as well as the faster sulkies and gigs were used for transporting people.

There were four wheeled wagons that pulled heavy loads and smaller two wheeled carts that carried milk, produce and bales of wool. Omnibuses carried multiple passengers while sleek carriages were posh vehicles used by wealthy folks who could afford drivers and grooms.

They weren’t the most comfortable modes of transport though, quite bumpy and dangerous. On many occasions, especially journeys up the Great Western Highway into the mountains, passengers were required to alight and walk up steep hills or other dangerous areas, because the horses and carriages couldn’t manage the load. Sometimes they would tumble off the edge causing injuries or fatalities.

The Nepean District Historical Society (NDHS) has a collection of 10 historic wagons dating from 1902. They are housed at the Arms of Australia Inn Museum in Emu Plains. It is the largest wagon collection of any museum in NSW. Due to financial limitations, they have had to be stored under tarps and other sub-standard conditions, being exposed to the elements for many years.

It has recently been decided that the NDHS will be receiving $15,000 in much needed funding ($5,000 from each of Penrith City Council’s three wards) to help protect their collection with the construction of an enclosure.

As a wedding celebrant for several years, local resident Karen Brown feels privileged to officiate people’s wedding ceremonies and help create one of their most precious memories. With the cost of weddings exploding in recent times, Karen wanted to be able to offer her backyard as a place for couples to have an intimate ceremony and avoid paying exorbitant fees.

Enter Barry Du Bois and the team from The Living Room, who recently gave Karen’s backyard pergola a beach vibe makeover, that was fit for the biggest day of anyone’s life.

“I have always loved watching The Living Room every week, and I was delighted to have this wonderful team of people transform my backyard. Barry, Dylan and the crew created something wonderful in my garden and it now gives me two options; I can enjoy it with family and friends, or re-set it to provide a lovely intimate setting for my couples who need a small venue for their wedding ceremonies” beamed Karen.

The old furniture, barbecue and fittings were removed, as well as the old aluminium fence. Anything that was not being reused was thrown into the Bingo Bin skip. Barry and the team installed a new modern glass panel fence. Instead of enclosing the pergola with the pool, the new fence now separates the two. Mini aluminium posts that simply screw into the pergola’s timber deck and the bricks around the pool hold up the Everton glass fence from Bunnings. Not only does the new fence look great, but because they’re made from toughened glass, they’ll stand up to the harsh Australian conditions and comply with Australian pool fencing standards.

Re-orienting the pergola involved removing the old corrugated fibreglass roof and half the rafters. The rafters were put back, running towards the garden with bamboo screening placed on top of the rafters at the back of the pergola and a new poly-carbonate roof attached.

A wide step was installed for easy access to the pergola. The deck along with the frame of the pergola was then given a coat of white Taubmans paint to brighten it up. A timber screen, outdoor roller blinds, outdoor stainless-steel LED lights, hanging plants, water feature, pot plants, corner lounge, armchair and coffee table were added making it perfect for entertaining.

With the focus on the pergola, the garden was largely left alone. A path across the garden, new set of timber stairs and balustrade rounded out the renovation to ensure there are no slip ups on the big day.

The Secret To Contentment Have you ever wondered what you’d need to have enough?

Would it be another car? Being able to go out more often? More time with friends? A new relationship?

But it seems though like whatever we get, it never fully satisfies. I guess advertising would fall over if we easily felt we had enough!

But a guy named Paul who wrote in the Bible said something about his life that never stops jumping out and grabbing me.

He said ‘I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want’ (Philippians 4:11-12).

Can you see it? Most people imagine they’d be content if they had more, and then discover it doesn’t come when they do. But here Paul blows us away by describing his contentment whether with a little or a lot. The secret of contentment isn’t tied with what we have, but who we have.

Paul had his life turned around by meeting Jesus. That replaced the what with a who. Now no ordinary person could do it. But Jesus was no ordinary person. As God’s appointed king He came on an extraordinary, life changing mission. A mission that first gives life, but then enables us to live life to the full. Jesus gives an invitation to all of us when He says ‘Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest’ (Matthew 11:28).

Now that’s not saying there won’t be challenges, difficulties, and disappointments in this life. But if our contentment is in a person who doesn’t disappoint, then we’re not caught up in the circumstances.

The antidote to discontentment then? The Bible invites us to find our contentment in Jesus Christ.

Savvy Local Cleans Up! After witnessing the proliferation of solar panel installations within the Nepean region, one savvy local now plans to clean up... by helping locals make more from their investment in solar.

As electricity costs continue to rise, more and more Nepean locals are turning to solar power installations in the hope that they can dramatically reduce their power bills. The latest Climate Council report reveals there are over 343,000 households in New South Wales now with solar installations, and with the cost of solar dropping by 58% over the past five years, installing solar to save on power costs is a trend that is predicted to have continued growth.

Local, Ken Bailey, has recently capitalised on the region’s solar boom by joining a nationwide solar panel cleaning network and establishing EcoKleenSolar Nepean.

“I was researching about solar panels for myself and discovered that they need a regular clean and inspection program to ensure they are working efficiently. That’s when I realised there was really no one offering this professional service to locals in the Nepean region”, Mr Bailey said.

Bosch, a world leader in solar technology, specify in their care and maintenance manual that panels that are soiled or dirty in places should be cleaned on a half-yearly basis.

“But you have to take care, though”, said Mr Bailey. “The average home owner should not get up on their roof to clean their panels. Working at heights is risky and we don’t want people hurting themselves.”

Mr Bailey said that he was required to undertake specific training to get accredited to work safely at heights and use all of the necessary safety equipment before he was able to commence his business.

“It’s also very important to follow the manufacturer’s recommended cleaning procedures or you may void your warranty.”

We asked Mr Bailey why panels need cleaning; surely rain was enough to clean them every so often?

“Imagine how your car would look if you left it out in the weather for six months. Well, that’s how your solar panels will look as well. Anything preventing sunlight getting into the cells within the solar panels means that they are not performing to their optimum output. That means the build up of dust, dirt, salt, even bird droppings and road pollutants creates a surface layer of grime that needs to be regularly cleaned.”

It seems as though the region’s locals are fast learners. Mr Bailey says that as word spreads about how he is helping locals make more from their solar he is seeing a lot more of the region from the rooftops.

‘Bails Off – That’s Lunch” The Lions Club of Emu Plains assisted the Emu Plains Sporting Club and Sommers Sportswear in delivering lunches to cricketers competing in the NSW Veterans (over 60’s) Cricket Championships at local grounds.

Emu Plains Sporting Club is a major sponsor of this Championship as is Sommers Sportswear, both a sponsor of the Sporting Club and this Championship tournament.

ingredients 1 1/2 cups rice blend 2 1/4 cups apple juice 1 cup dried cranberries 1 1/2 cups boiling water 1 large red apple 1 lemon, juiced 150g baby spinach 3/4 cup flaked almonds, toasted 100g Danish fetta, crumbled Honey Mustard Vinaigrette 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard 1 1/2 tablespoons wholegrain mustard 1/3 cup honey 1/4 cup lemon juice 2 small garlic cloves, crushed preparation 1. Place rice in a sieve. Rinse under cold water until water runs clear. Place rice, apple juice, 1 cup cold water and a pinch of salt in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Cover.

Bring to a simmer. Reduce heat to medium-low. Cook for 30 minutes or until liquid is absorbed and rice is cooked through. Remove from heat. Set aside for 10 minutes.

Transfer rice to a bowl. Cool.

2. Meanwhile, place cranberries and boiling water in a heatproof bowl. Set aside for 10 minutes or until cranberries are plump. Drain well. Add to rice.

3. Make Honey Mustard Vinaigrette. Place oil, mustards, honey, lemon juice and garlic in a screw-top jar. Season with salt and pepper. Secure lid. Shake well to combine.

Taste and add a little extra honey or lemon juice, if needed.

4. Core apple. Cut into 1cm cubes. Toss with lemon juice to coat.

5. Add spinach, apple and ¾ of the almonds to the rice. Toss gently to combine. Transfer to a serving bowl. Top with fetta and remaining almonds. Serve with vinaigrette, on the side.

Slithering Start to Spring Warmer weather, longer days and blooming flowers are classic signs that Spring is here. They also mean something else - snake season.

It’s the that time of year when snakes and cold-blooded animals come out of their ‘brumation’, the term used for their hibernation-like state in winter. They are looking for food and a mate and often two will be seen together.

Recently, there have been sightings of snakes along the Great River Walk on the Nepean River particularly in Emu Plains and Leonay. The council have now put up signs warning residents to beware. Locals report seeing red belly black snakes as well as larger numbers of water dragons, lizards and skinks.

Yo Matthews of Sydney Snake Catchers said that due to the warm start to the season, snakes have been visible since August and he expects this to last until April or May. Margaret Slater has been an Emu Plains resident walking near the river for 19 years and the first time she ever saw a snake near the river was in August. “I’ve seen more in my backyard over the years” she said.

She walks by the river quite often with her sister Sheila Baldock. They, like so many others, enjoy the scenery along the walk and go for a coffee afterwards. The women say they are not worried about the increase in snakes and know to just leave them alone.

Matthews says, “Snakes are even more timid than skinks and water dragons”.

What do you do if you see one? “Don’t try to hit it or pick it up” cautions Matthews, “leave it alone and it will go on its way, it doesn’t see you as prey”.

Fox Shows Class with Stunning World Title Win Local champion Jessica Fox bounced back from one of the most disappointing races of her career, posting an emphatic K1 win at the 2017 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships at Pau in France recently.

Fox was left gutted after finishing outside the medals in the women’s C1, ending a run of three consecutive World Championship titles in the event.

She scraped into the K1 final in 10th place, but then posted an incredible 97.14 in the final which proved unbeatable.

Slovakia’s Jana Dukatova was more than four seconds back in 101.76, with 2017’s overall World Cup winner, Germany’s Ricarda Funk, third in 102.62.

“This one is really special,” Fox said.

“Sometimes in training I’m able to do things to rival the guys, but then in racing I’m too safe. I’m really proud of that race because I feel like I attacked it the way I wanted to.”

Fox won her first K1 world title at Deep Creek in the US in 2014, a World Championship where she also won her second C1 title.

But she said this championship’s win was special.

“2014 in my mind is my best ever performance, winning the K1 and the C1,” she said.

“After the Olympics, I was really pleased and proud to win the bronze, but I was a little bit frustrated.

“So, to come back this year to Pau, to deliver a really sweet run after some disappointments here in the past few years, it’s really awesome. I’m just so happy right now.” Article: Australian Canoeing (www.canoe.org.au)

Getting Results It’s natural to want your child to do well at school and some parents use a reward such as money to encourage their children to get better grades. I’ve often heard of parents offering their child money for every “A” on their end of term report card.

One of the problems with giving children financial incentives for good end-of-term grades is that the reward comes too long after the effort is made.

Rather than waiting till the end of term, it’s much more effective to set up a system of rewards which are brief and frequent and which encourage positive daily habits. These daily habits then build towards an eventual outcome, such as a good homework and study routine.

However, you can encourage children to build good study and homework habits without having to resort to offering money.

Why not try a reward such as spending time with your child doing an activity they really like? Or you could offer a special treat you know they’ll enjoy. The object is to encourage good routines by giving extra attention and praise or small frequent rewards when they are doing the right thing.

When kids are struggling, that little bit of extra attention can encourage them into new patterns of behaviour – and they may end up getting that A after all!

“As part of developing our school’s values and when revisiting our anti-bullying policy, we have incorporated a number of activities and events to support its implementation. Year 7 students studied a unit in PDHPE called Connecting Up - which had an anti-bullying message and strategies to deal with unacceptable behaviour. The School Captains created a pledge which, in essence, acknowledges that bullying and harassment exists in the world beyond the school gate - but it has no place in our school” said Max Foord, Principal of Nepean Creative and Performing Arts High School.

“When we heard that the Department of Education were making anti bullying messages we asked if we could be included. The message is certainly a very strong one regarding the power of words” added Mr Foord.

Statistically most bullying occurs between 10 and 15 years of age, from Year 5 to Year 9. Therefore, the Department of Education sought to work with Drama students in this age group.

Osteoporosis - Hippocrates Was Right!

I embarked on the story of osteoporosis as I see so many patients fall into the simplistic yet enticing notion that the solution to their condition is an ‘eat more calcium or Vitamin D’ story, or worse, that ‘a drug that actually disrupts bone regeneration’ may help. Often such simplistic yet attractive interventions may not improve bone health or strength at all, but may in some cases be risking poorer bone and general health.

By now we should be able to appreciate that osteoporosis is a diet & lifestyle problem. Good bone physiology depends on having all the right ingredients present to allow bone cells (of all types) to do their work properly. This means having a diet that provides all the protein, vitamins & minerals needed, and a lifestyle that ensures the correct hormonal & physical stimuli for excellent bone maintenance.

Now that we have looked at many of these elements one at a time, I wanted to recap what we’ve learned so the picture becomes clear.

Calcium is far less important than made out. Our RDA is 1000mg per day, but Thai men & women on 220-361mg per day from veges fish and meats have much lower hip fracture rates than westerners! Calcium supplements raise risk of heart disease.

Protein – ‘from food’ has a direct bone building effect (independent of calorie intake), and does not cause bone loss.

Protein isolates (supplements) can cause calcium loss.

Vitamin K (from leafy greens, fermented foods and natto) make osteocalcin which binds & keeps calcium in bone.

Vitamin D (from midday sunshine – 23% of Australians are vitamin D deficient) improves intestinal calcium uptake & reduces loss through the kidneys; makes osteocalcin Vitamin A (from liver & cod live oil) – without it normal bone

growth & tooth development don’t occur; makes osteocalcin.

Magnesium from foods (Sesame seeds, Brazil nuts, almonds, green leafy vegetables) optimises: bone crystal shape for strength & response to bone building hormone PTH; activates vitamin D; reduces inflammation. Excess ‘supplemental’ Magnesium may reduce bone strength.

Boron (avocados nuts and dried fruits) raises free testosterone & estrogen, so reduces inflammation & increases production of bone building proteins; stops urinary loss of calcium, magnesium & phosphorus; improves intestinal absorption of magnesium and deposition in bone.

Potassium (green leafy veges, potatoes, nuts, seeds, legumes, fish) may be the most important foods you can eat - decreases bone resorption increases bone formation, significantly reduces urinary calcium loss.

Silicon (Horsetail herb, dates, kidney beans) during growth cross-links collagen and proteoglycans to make the collagen in bone matrix more calcifiable & increases bone strength; facilitates bone formation independent of vitamin D. Exercise - skipping, bounding and depth jumping exercises done 6 days per week for 1 year were effective for reversing bone loss in menopausal women. Doing weights or walking doesn’t show same results!!

Leonay Juniors Crushing Win in Junior Classic

Fifty-six highly talented junior golfers from the Jack Newton Junior Golf Foundation teed off at the Stonecutters Ridge Golf Club recently, in the 'Stonecutters Ridge Junior Classic'.

Leonay Golf Club had four players in the strong field, headed

by Eric Summers, Coby Carruthers, Ben Crilley and Zachary Lange.

Summers was outstanding on the day, scorching around the demanding Quakers Hill layout with a stroke round of 77, just 5 shots over par. Summers (a member of the Leonay Encourage Shield Junior Pennant team) played off a handicap of 16 on the day and was just 2 shots over par late in his round.

A triple bogey on the 16th hole could have derailed his tournament, but the Leonay youngster showed amazing poise to finish with back-to-back pars and a runaway 6-shot victory.

Carruthers was the next best of the Leonay players, finishing in 21st spot with a nett score of 74, whilst Crilley was 27th with a nett score of 79.

Players in the Junior Classic were aged between 8 and 18, with an astonishing thirty-one of those players on single figure handicaps. Those statistics emphatically underline the enormous depth of talent coming up through the junior ranks of NSW Golf.

When Should A Child Learn To Swim?

Last summer was terrible in terms of drownings, one of the worst on record, and as a consequence many parents I have spoken to want to get their children swimming as soon as possible. But when should a child start swimming lessons?

Swim Australia and the Australian Swim Schools Association recommend starting lessons from 6 months, but you can and should practice early water familiarisation before this at home.

Babies are not born with a fear of the water - fear and anxiety around water is acquired - as children develop independence and imagination some children will develop a fear of swimming or going under water. Make sure baby has regular baths and showers, and becomes comfortable with the sensation of water being trickled and then poured over their head from birth. Your 6 month old will then accept the water more readily, and with much less fear than an older child, allowing them to develop early water safety and awareness skills In addition to safety, there are other benefits for babies introduced to the water early, including the development of gross motor skills and improved strength, co-ordination and balance, as baby is supported by the water and less restricted by gravity. In addition, a four-year project led by Griffith University has concluded that children who swim show more advanced physical and cognitive skills than those who don't, including better visual-motor abilities, (such as drawing lines and colouring in shapes), and excelling in following instructions,

THE LAST WORD FROM THE EDITOR

Next time I put pen to paper for 'The Last Word', it will be less than 30 days until Christmas. Many of you (like me!) will be frantically preparing their minds ready for the season ahead.

I must admit, I am a huge fan of this time of year. The weather is glorious, the landscape is picturesque (especially in our part of the world).... and if you stop for just a moment of your busy day, you can hear the wind blowing, the birds chirping and all kinds of natural beauty that surrounds us!

We have a wonderful recipe to kickstart your 'Christmas' spirit on page 6, while our resident Vet Camille steps it up a gear and talks 'Santa Photos with your Pets' on page 12; if the thought of Christmas being so near wasn't already scary enough!

'Being happy is a do-it-yourself project', friends close to me will know just how much these words resonate with me...
