You Can Dance at Emu Plains, a leading Dance, Performing Arts and All Star Cheerleading School recently won a very prestigious award reflecting their ‘team’ philosophy to a tee! Upgrades to the Great Western Highway intersections at Hare and Ross streets in Glenbrook are a step closer with early surveying and geotechnical works underway.

Federal Minister for Urban Infrastructure Paul Fletcher said the Australian and New South Wales governments were jointly funding the investigatory works as part of the $3.6 billion Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan. “The Glenbrook Intersection Upgrade will involve installing new traffic signals at the Ross Street and Great Western Highway intersection, and upgrading existing signals at the Great Western Highway and Hare Street intersection,� Mr Fletcher said. “These upgrades will improve safety and access along the Great Western Highway, while enhancing the primary gateway to Glenbrook Village. “The Australian Government is delivering on its plan to unlock the potential of Western Sydney through economytransforming infrastructure investment, making it an even better place to live and do business.�

Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres said the preferred option had been identified by Roads and Maritime Services and endorsed by Blue Mountains City Council, with detailed design works for the project now underway. “Surveying, geotechnical investigation work and potholing is now being carried out to locate existing utilities within the corridor to help inform the detailed design for this upgrade,�

Mr Ayres said. “Work is expected to start in mid-2017 and be completed by the end of the year, weather permitting.�

Local resident Barry would like to put a call out to a mystery ‘young girl’, who recently handed in his wallet after he lost it at the Leonay Shops.

Barry didn’t realise he had lost his wallet, until a man came to his front door and presented it to him, stating that a young girl had handed it in at the local gymnasium, where he works. The man couldn’t provide information on the young girl because it was given to him by a staff member, fully intact with cards as well as money. After speaking to people in the adjoining businesses to no avail, Barry was unable to find the good citizen who found his wallet. “Being a former Police Officer, the honesty displayed by this young girl should be recognised and I hope that through this article, we might be able to locate her� said Barry.

Angst over Authority Have you ever heard of Hutt River? It was in the news a few weeks ago. It’s in inland Western Australia and it became famous in the 1970s. The reason? It’s owner Leonard Casley seceded from Australia. At least, that’s what he thinks – the Australian Government and High Court beg to differ!

Anyway Leonard Casley seceded and called himself Prince Leonard, stopped paying taxes, and started issuing his own currency. Despite the authority of the Australian government over his land and all the inhabitants of his property he effectively said, ‘I’m going my own way’ (The latest news was that Leonard will soon abdicate the throne to his son, Prince Graeme!)

Hutt River reflects the way we can feel and act toward those in authority over us. In fact, I think we most notice authority when we disagree with it, or when we think it shouldn’t hold sway over us. On the other hand, authority is a power for good. You find it in government, at work, in your family. Authority allows for decisions to be made, and people to work together with clear boundaries, and together achieve extraordinary things, even when they have competing opinions.

So when the Bible tackles us with God’s claim of authority, it’s pause for thought. The Bible recounts again and again how God uses his authority in people’s best interests. He gives and sustains life. And then, even where it recounts how we collectively have pulled our own Hutt River and said, ‘I’m going my own way’, we’re told there is a way back into the fold. It’s

a way back through mercy, not fear, a way to experience the kindness of God, rather than the firm hand of God. That way is believing in and trusting Jesus. His story is one of authority used not for himself, but ultimately for our good. There’s a great summary of it in the Bible in Philippians chapter 2, verses 6 to 11. You can read it in a Bible, or simply Google it.

Fox Posts One of Her Best to Land Another K1/C1 Slalom Double

Two-time Olympic medallist Jessica Fox recently posted one of her best runs ever on her local Penrith course to win the women’s K1 canoe slalom gold at the Australian Open, adding to the C1 title she also won.

Despite picking up an early two second penalty for a gate touch, Fox sizzled through the back half of the course to post a time of 96:56 seconds, six seconds ahead of Czech World Champion Katerina Kudejova, with Olympic silver medallist, Luuka Jones of New Zealand, 0:58 further back in third place. “I think that was one of my best runs on this course to date,�

Fox said. “I think having done the C1 motivated me a bit. It’s always a physical demand on your body, and emotionally, when you are doing two events." “This was a good field. There was a lot at stake, so I was happy

to race freely and attack it the way the men paddle.�

In the men’s C1, veteran David Florence almost missed making the final, but scraped in as the last qualifier and then set a cracking 95:78 which proved too much for the rest of the field to catch.

Florence, the two-time World Champion, took the gold from fellow Great Britain paddler, Ryan Westley, with Slovakia’s Olympic silver medallist, Matus Benuj, finishing third.

19-year-old Tristan Carter was Australia’s only entry in the C1 final after posting a fast semi-final time which saw him leapfrog most of the world-class field to qualify seventh.

Although he was unable to recapture the form in the final, finishing ninth, he was stoked to make the top ten and to confirm his place on the senior Australian team for this year’s World Championships. “I was very happy with my semi-final run, that was the one that really mattered,� he said. “The finals run wasn’t as good, but I was still happy to be there among the top guys. It was a great experience." “It’s my first time on the senior team, I’m looking forward to going overseas again and getting experience on a whole new level.�

One of the best lessons that I teach at school, is the difference between Aggressive, Assertive, and Passive. This is such a good lesson for children to learn. People who adopt a particular style of relating in childhood tend to take that style into adulthood.

They are often not aware of their responses and this can cause difficulties in their relationships.

Aggressive is like being a Cranky Crocodile. Cranky Crocodiles are snappy and mean. They only think of themselves. They push other people around. They fly off the handle. Other kids don’t want to play with them.

Passive is like being a timid Mouse. A timid Mouse is withdrawn. He does not stand up for himself, and lets others push him around. He then gets resentful and angry, but turns it in on himself.

Assertive children stand up for themselves in a kind way. They balance their own needs with the needs of others, and try to find a happy medium. They use their calming down strategies and their problem solving skills. For Assertive, I ask children to conjure up their own image; something that they think is Cool, Calm, and Confident.

Assertive kids also use “I Messages” to let other people know how they feel and what they would like. At school, we use a stem statement to help the students remember how to do “I Messages” …

“When you __________, I feel __________. Would you please __________?”

We also teach the children that just because they use their I Messages, it doesn’t mean the other person will do as they ask.

It’s just a better way of communicating.

In case you are wondering – yes, even young children do this very well (often better than the older children). Our kindergarten children were using it within a few weeks of learning it with the teacher reinforcing it wherever she could.

Local Nurse Earns Lions Scholarship

Local Emu Plains nurse, Sandra Muir, was recently presented, with a certificate and cheque for $3,000 courtesy of the Lions Nurses Scholarship Foundation, by Emu Plains Lions Club, before their recent Board meeting.

The mission of the Lions NSW/ACT Nurses Scholarship Foundation is to provide the opportunity for nurses in NSW & ACT to continue their professional development. Scholarships of varying value are granted to nurses in NSW & ACT each year.

Sandra was directed by NSW nursing to apply and completed the Lions Club application which qualified her for a category B scholarship; for extended study leave leading to the award of a formal qualification from a recognised tertiary institution in Australia.

Sandra has been nursing for 24 years and has worked in three different States of Australia, and is currently studying for a post graduate certificate in Anaesthetics and Recovery at UTS, whilst working at Nepean Hospital in the Anaesthetic and Recovery department. Her duties include assisting the anaesthetist with airway management and monitoring patient care throughout surgery. Her other role is in recovering patients after surgery.

Sandra commented, “The Graduate Certificate is important to me as it will give me an increase in knowledge base, critically evaluate and enhance my clinical skills, in the area of health that I'm working. It will allow me to improve my ability to deliver high quality holistic care to my patients and their families in the pre and post-surgery environment.”

Sandra added, ”A career in nursing has given me the joy and sometimes sadness in caring for patients and families, plus the ability to travel Australia and see health care through different settings and different communities. I have met many different people and made great working relationships.”

Alasan Cottage was first established as a family day care service and then converted into a Preschool. In 2004, Spyro and Vicki Skoulogenis took over the business and applied to have the preschool extended to an approved service, so that families could be granted Childcare Benefit and Child Care Rebate. Hippie Heaven sell an eclectic range of Hippie inspired items, including Kaftans, jewellery, homewares and their own range of organic herbal teas, bath salts and handcrafted soy candles and melts which are manufactured and packed on site. Their homewares and Kaftans are sourced and manufactured from all over the globe from free trade sources and ensuring that no child labour is used.

The business was started by Samantha Oraya at Sheppard Road in April last year, as the manufacturing side of the award winning day spa @ Jorja James, a successful beauty business operating for the past 15 years. Samantha has been manufacturing candles and blending teas for day spas for many years. She was unable to keep up with the demand, so when the opportunity came up to have a dedicated work studio so close to the day spa, she leapt at it.

The goals of the business are to have a web based business and to expand on their manufactured ranges. From a staffing perspective, they hope to have an integrated long term program with local agencies such as Nova to provide learning and working opportunities for staff with disabilities. This month, they will have a young person mentored by Nova starting a traineeship with them.

“We are incredibly blessed to be part of such a wonderful community in Emu Plains and Penrith. Having an established business in Sheppard Road for so long, we have grown with the community. Watching it change, develop and grow is a privilege. The feeling of belonging is an absolute joy” said Samantha, owner of Hippie Heaven.

Calcium For Bones – How Much Do I Need & Where From?

The Australian guidelines specify a calcium intake of 1000mg/ day for most adults. So where do you get it??? ‌. From healthy foods, of course!

Why? Because getting calcium into bones is a complicated game requiring many different players. Obviously, calcium first needs to be in our foods in reasonable quantities. But then it needs to be extracted from these foods by proper digestion, then absorbed, assimilated into bone (and cells), and finally kept out of arteries & soft tissues. Only ‘healthy foods’ provide a balanced source of - not only calcium, but all of the ancillary nutrients that facilitate calcium’s proper utilisation. These include (but are not limited to) vitamins A, B2, B6, B9 & B12, C, D, E & K, & minerals potassium, magnesium, boron, copper, zinc, strontium, and iron. In short‌ incorporating calcium is really about eating a highly varied low calorie nutrient dense diet!

So which foods? Well we are all familiar with the high calcium foods of industry promotional campaigns – milk & cheese! But this is a very one dimensional marketing driven view. It is true that these are good sources of calcium but while cheese is almost unsurpassable as a calcium source, it is extremely high in calories. When it comes to milk, the fact is that there are many foods that are excellent (indeed better) sources of calcium, both in terms of total calcium content and absorbability. These include foods such as sardines, winged beans, carob, tahini, wild

Many dark green leafy vegetables have relatively high calcium content (although some such as spinach and rhubarb are high in calcium oxalates which is a little harder to absorb). Cruciferous vegetables such as kale, bok-choy, broccoli, cabbage etc. are green yet essentially oxalate free, and have much calcium and plenty of the vitamins & minerals to help utilise it. 5 Ingredient Maple Mustard Salmon

Ingredients 2 Tbsp Real Maple Syrup 2 Tsp Grainy Mustard 2 Tsp Low-Sodium Soy Sauce 1 Clove Garlic, Grated on Microplane or Minced 1/8 Tsp Cayenne Pepper 4 (6 Oz) Center-Cut Salmon Fillets Kosher Salt and Freshly Ground Black Pepper Method 1. Heat oven to 400ºF. Line a rimmed sheet tray with parchment paper.

2. Whisk together syrup, mustard, soy sauce, garlic and cayenne in a small bowl.

3. Season salmon with salt and pepper. Brush with maple sauce and roast until cooked through and opaque, about 15 minutes.

3. Transfer mixture to glasses, sprinkle with cinnamon and a generous drizzle of caramel sauce.

The Caring Hearts Community Quilters excelled themselves recently, having been able to distribute beautiful patchwork quilts to Hawkesbury, Nepean, Springwood and Blue Mountains Hospitals for their Palliative Care Wards. These colourful quilts bring comfort and support for people nearing the end of their lives, through not only the physical symptoms such as pain, but also the emotional, spiritual and social needs of the patient and their carer.

The senior ladies that make this group of dedicated patch workers have been stitching their special kind of magic into these quilts now for almost 15 years, with the knowledge that they are truly doing something they love whilst bringing joy and comfort to those that receive them. One of the members of the group of 12 quilters said the quilters had also arranged delivery, transport and distribution of hundreds of quilts for people throughout the country affected by floods, fires and other disasters.

As the demand for their quilts grow, they are hoping that other quilters might be interested in making the occasional quilt for them and patch workers are always welcomed into their group. They are always delighted to have donations of fabric and UFO’s, as they use a great amount of fabric as you can well imagine.

The Caring Hearts Quilters are having their 9th Airing of the Quilts next month. This is their only fundraising event for the year and it will be held on the 8th April at The Arms of Australia Inn Museum (Corner Great Western Highway and Gardenia Street in Emu Plains) from 10am to 4pm with a cost of $5 to see the quilts. There will be a trading table with handmade goods, a book stall, Devonshire Teas, Sausage Sizzle and a quilt raffle that will be drawn on the day, with live music at noon.

Grieving Fur Babies This article is difficult to write. Both our cat and dog have died within weeks of each other. They were such good mates and I’m sure my dog died from a broken heart.

Our cat, Pepper was 21 years old and amazed our vet by her youth and agility. Our dog, Remy was 10 years old but was given an upsetting prognosis from the vet over a year ago. It was a shock to all of us that at his 2016 yearly check up that he was filled with cancer in most organs and a bad heart murmur that wasn’t present previously but was life threatening now.

We went home being told that he might last a few days or a week.

The time went by and he was still running around with Pepper and I mean running. They had routines that they did together (which I miss terribly) but they were both vibrant and happy. Remy slept a little longer and deeper than usual but he was still energetic while awake.

The Days I Was Hoping Would Never Come Pepper died January 13th and Remy on February 2nd. My grief is overwhelming right now. It’s difficult to get through each day without them.

Living With Grief Friends who haven’t had pets might not understand, “It’s only an animal, what’s the problem?”

Pets do so much for us; they give us unconditional love, companionship, respect, routines and much more. The death of a pet leaves a void in your heart and life.

The death of a pet can often hurt as much as losing a friend or loved one. It’s intense. Research has shown that the death of a pet is comparable to the death of a human except we don’t have the same rituals for pets as we do for humans.

Tips • Give yourself permission to: • Remember them.

• Cry and feel your emotions.

• Leave their bowls out. You don’t have to clear their things out.

• Get another pet when you want to. It won’t replace your loved pet, you can love another pet and still remember your previous pet.
