The Westies Market Launching in Emu Plains The Westies are very excited to announce that they will be launching their Emu Plains market on next month on Sunday July 16th. After running the very successful Thornton Markets in 2016, The Westies have found a new home at Nepean Creative and Performing Arts High School to hold the monthly market. The market will feature stallholders trading local organic produce, handmade, one off fashion items and homewares, freshly made ready to eat gourmet treats as well as delicious food to take home along with live music, performers and workshops.

Located in Emu Plains on the Great Western Highway, the two centuries old building is an old coaching inn dating back to 1862, the last stop before starting up the mountain road. The building itself strikes a diminutive pose, but once you walk through its low doors, a treasure trove of yesteryear greets you.

Local artefacts fill the displays, highlighting life in the old days with kitchenware, furniture, clothing and equipment. There are shards of blue willow pottery and the plates to match them, metal buttons, glass marbles, stone bottles and a huge selection of irons and old telephones. There is an impressive collection of Aboriginal spears, shields and other carved items. The barn and the grounds house horse drawn carriages, farm and worker implements.

According to Rosemary Weaver, Senior Vice President of the Nepean District Historical Society, the museum is getting busier. “There have been a lot more visitors recently�, she said, “especially community groups�. “The school tours are the most popular�, she added, because, unlike most museums, the students get a real hands on experience.

Under the guidance of the museum volunteers, the children are allowed to have a go at pushing the pedals of the Pianola, pressing the keys of the old typewriters, playing with the old toys, riding a tricycle, grating carrots, making butter using cream in the kitchen, and doing the washing by running the cloth through the old-fashioned mangle, using the push mower, and trying on a set of convict irons. There is even a school room set up to have a mini lesson where they sit at little wooden desks and learn to write on slates.

The inn and museum are run by volunteers and members of the society. They rely heavily on fundraising from their fundraising events, especially their ever popular Devonshire teas.

Promises, Promises ‘Under promise and over deliver’, that was my friends advice.

I can’t remember why it came up. Maybe I’d just over promised and under delivered! Whatever the reason, it’s great advice, just the same. And it’s not hard advice to understand.

We’ve all had promises made to us, small and large, ‘Can I borrow some money, I’ll pay you back’, or ‘I’ll stick by you, no matter what’, but it’s what comes next that matters more. So we’re always weighing up promises. Will the person making the promise come up with the goods? Do they have the power to pull it off? Will they want to? If they’ve let you down before, or they’re untried, you’re less likely to believe them. But if they’ve followed through before, and you’ve received what was promised, well you’re more likely to believe them.

And when you turn to the unfolding work of God in the Bible, promises and how to respond to them are central to the story.

They’re central to the character of God, and central to the people he crosses paths with and makes promises to. God makes lots of promises, promises about forgiveness, promises about life, promises about salvation, promises about accountability, promises about resurrection. He makes promises that seem impossible to deliver. The obstacles are overwhelming at times.

No person could do what He does.

But the pattern is there again and again. God makes promises, and over delivers. His track record is open to scrutiny. So when we hear the promises that are still available to us, we can have confidence that He’ll come up with the goods.

The question for us is, will we accept His promises at face value, and trust them?

Lions ‘Got the Salvos Back’

Colloquially, when someone ‘has your back’ they protect or support you. On the last weekend in May for the last 27 years in a row, the Lions Club of Emu Plains has done just that: supporting the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal Doorknock.

The doorknock takes place with volunteer drivers and collectors for over 13 designated areas in the Emu Plains, Emu Heights and Leonay areas.

For those who missed the doorknock, you can still send your donation to The Salvation Army, Red Shield Appeal, GPO Box 9888, Sydney, or https://www.my.salvationarmy.org.au/ donation/ Majors David and Robin Pullen of the Salvation Army thanked the Lions Club and associated volunteers for their invaluable assistance for many past years of the Sunday Red Shield Appeal.

David indicated that the funds from the Appeal are ‘ploughed’ back into the local area, and the total ‘spend’ was around ‘threefold’ of that collected in the Appeal.

Donations, no matter how small, will help the Salvos continue their invaluable work in the community. The Annual Penrith Dolls, Bears, Craft and Collectables Show The Annual Penrith Dolls, Bears, Craft and Collectables Show will be held on Sunday 18th June, 2017 from 10:00am to 4:00pm at Panthers Penrith Convention Centre, Mulgoa Road in Penrith.

There will be signs for directions to the Exhibition Hall.

Panthers Penrith is the best venue with great support from the Management and staff and plenty of free parking, including coaches and disabled parking.

The stall displays are a delight with plenty on offer for everyone from the collector of antique, vintage and modern dolls, collectable bears and toys.

The show features jewellery, china, reborn dolls, teddy bears, and exquisite handmade craft, doll houses, doll furniture, miniatures, books, scrapbooking, doll repairs, beads, patterns, buttons, laces, candles, gem stones and supplies to make your own dolls and bears.

The feature of the show is the famous doll and bear competition. The show also offers free valuations, displays and demonstrations by the Hand Weavers and Spinners from Sydney and the Blue Mountains; and a small display of quilts made by the Caring Hearts Quilting Group. Anne Thomas from the group will be there for any questions on patchwork and quilting.

The show provides a great day out for everyone, with refreshments available including Devonshire teas and the famous BBQ cooked by the members of the Zonta Club of Nepean Valley Inc. Raffle tickets will be available at the door for $2 each or 3 for $5. All proceeds of the raffle will support the Leukaemia Foundation. Prizes include a beautiful handmade porcelain doll, handmade quilt and collectable bear. Entry price is $6 for Adults and $2 for Children over 5 years.

How Do Empathy?

Children

It is difficult to teach empathy to children under the age of 4 years. This is; because the logical, rational, thinking part of the brain (cerebral cortex) doesn’t start heating up until the age of 4 years. To demonstrate empathy, you need to have something called ‘theory of mind’, that is you need to understand that other people have thoughts and feelings of their own.

Young children are egocentric, they think that the universe revolves around them. Kids start to develop theory of mind from about the age of 4. Some kids are better at it than others, depending on their temperament and personality. Children who have autism or other disabilities/disorders may take a bit longer to develop theory of mind.

The ability to take in another person’s perspective really kicks in around Grade 3, but it is still a slow process. It requires a lot of prompting and role modelling. Here is how I teach it at school…

1. Noticing how another person feels (facial expression, body language, what they say, the situation).“You look ….” “Are you OK?” . “How are you going today, you seem…”

2. Listening. This is where you say nothing, and you LISTEN. 3. Show empathy. “If that happened to me, I would feel…”. “I’m sorry that happened to you.”

4. Offer assistance. “How can I help?”

If the person wants to be left alone, allow that, but check on them a bit later. If you are worried about the person, speak to a trusted adult. No child or young person should feel like they are responsible for another child or young person.

What’s unhelpful in responding to someone else’s strong feelings?

• Being dismissive – saying things like ‘you’ll be alright’, ‘suck it up’, ‘at least…’, ‘get over it’, ‘don’t be a cry baby’, ‘man up’, ‘stop being a drama queen’.

• Talking about yourself.

• Telling them what they should do.

• Changing the subject.

• Gossiping or spreading rumours.

People who try to push others out of their strong feelings are usually uncomfortable with those feelings, and are attempting to make themselves feel better.

GARRYBOT is the affectionate term McCarthy Catholic College’s students have given to their incredible robot. It dances, struts, does head over heels, jiggles and walks through a tight maze.

Liana Gibb, Year 8, controlled GARRYBOT via her iPad and manipulated his movements; “I loved guiding him through the maze” she said with a grin. Tia Auld enjoyed “learning how to program” GARRYBOT’s repertoire of agile movements.

GARRYBOT is a sample of McCarthy Catholic College’s innovative, well designed and enriched learning experiences in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

STEM challenges students to think, conceptualise and develop a range of skills previously the sole preserve of universities.

McCarthy Catholic College students are preparing for a world of rapid change and challenge. Jack Prendergast cannot get enough of “robotics and F1, designing and building our own fast model sports cars”. His friend, Christian Thompson enjoys the “challenge of robotics and technology”. They all enjoy piloting the college’s drones. Yes, DRONES! McCarthy Catholic College is only one of 14 schools across Australia to participate in P-TECH (Pathways in Technology). This is a partnership between schools and industry. Big business will be working with McCarthy to develop technological skills and equip students for a 21st working environment where STEM skills are essential.

Worcestershire sauce 2 sprigs rosemary 2 sprigs thyme Optional: 1 baguette, cut into 5-inch pieces Method 1. In a slow cooker, add the potatoes, carrots, and onions to make a base for the meat. Lay the chuck roast on top of the veggies and season with salt and pepper on both sides.

2. Wash your hands, because mess.

3. Mix cornstarch and water until well combined and pour close to the edge so it gets down to the veggies. Pour Worcestershire sauce directly on top of the meat. Cover with the slow-cooker lid and cook on high for 5 hours. Place the rosemary and thyme sprigs on top of the meat and cook for 1 more hour.

4. Remove rosemary and thyme.

5. Using a fork, shred the meat and serve by itself with the veggies, or on top of bread for a sandwich! The juices from the bottom of the slow cooker make for an AMAZING dipping sauce!

Zokoko’s Sweet Success This year, local business Zokoko, celebrates eight years since they first opened their popular chocolate factory and café at the foot of the Blue Mountains in Emu Heights in 2009.

Zokoko makes chocolate from scratch, that is, from bean to bar.

Their products include their pure origin bars; their flavour range, chocolate confections and cakes and sweet treats to enjoy with their freshly roasted coffee.

“While travelling through Central America and staying at a sloth sanctuary in Costa Rica, I fell in love with the cocoa trees, their pods and beans. This inspired me to study chocolate technology in the USA then and set up our factory” said Zokoko’s Michelle Morgan.

The chocolate makers at Zokoko will be increasing their range of products, working with beans from Tanzania and will release a milk and dark chocolate using these beans.

“When we create a special moment of deliciousness in our customers’ day - then we have achieved our goal. It’s lovely to see the smiles on the faces of our youngest customers enjoying a chocolate snake or honey bear” explained Michelle.

You Can Dance Takes on L.A! You Can Dance Performing Arts School in Emu Plains recently had an entourage of 110 students and their families embark on an incredible Cheer and Dance adventure to Los Angeles.

The itinerary was jam packed with tours, family time and extraordinary learning opportunities for their students. They participated in workshops at Disneyland with their Youth Performing Arts program lead by Aussie Josh Horner, with World Champion Cheerleading coaches at ‘Pacific Coast Magic Cheer’ (one of the most successful cheerleading facilities in America) and at ‘The Edge Performing Arts’ with L.A’s best Dance instructors.

You Can Dance’s students also performed on Hollywood Boulevard at Madame Tussauds and of course Disneyland!

One of the highlights of their trip was competing in an All American Cheerleading competition at the Anaheim Convention Centre ‘The American Showcase’, where they won a host of awards, taking home a swag of banners and prizes. Several YCD teams also placed 1st in their categories making them Nationals Champions!

“We opened up this opportunity to all families at YCD and had a mix of students from the ages of 5 to 25 and we incorporated into competition teams in both cheer and dance, as well as dance performances! Some incredible lifetime memories were made in our unforgettable journey – what an opportunity for our kids! We are beyond proud of our students and thank ‘Gullivers Sport Travel’ and local company ‘Cheer/Dance Travel’ for tailor making an amazing itinerary, a once in a lifetime for our students” said studio director Jane Houlihan.

Local Pottery Exhibition and Sale The Nepean Potters Society will be holding their bi-annual exhibition and sale in the Glenbrook Community Hall on Saturday the 24th and Sunday the 24th of June. The sale will commence at 9:00am and close at 5:00pm on each day and entry is free.

The theme of the exhibition will be ‘Animal Farmyard’. There will be functional pottery as well as sculptural pieces involved. This will include platters, mugs, teapots and many kinds of farm animals.

It is anticipated that there will be in excess of 400 pieces on display, most of which will be on sale, with 10 potters exhibiting.

People who attend the exhibition can expect to see a wide variety of unique pottery for sale which would make ideal functional items to keep or for gifts.

The Nepean Potters Society has been holding exhibitions for over 30 years.

Initially, the Arms of Australia Inn at Emu Plains was the venue for their exhibitions before relocating to the Glenbrook Community Hall.

Navigate Through Western Sydney’s Colonial History With New App A new smartphone app makes exploring the colonial history and heritage of Western Sydney easier than ever before.

The free Colonial Heritage of Western Sydney app is a joint venture between Penrith, Hawkesbury, Liverpool and Camden Councils to acknowledge and celebrate the region’s rich history.

These combined local government areas contain the largest group of early Colonial European heritage assets in Australia including buildings, farmhouses, churches, cemeteries, roads and bridges.

Users of the new app can discover and explore these assets in a number of ways, including themed driving and walking tours ranging in length from a short few hours, to a full day or even a whole weekend tour.

Penrith Mayor Cr John Thain said he hopes this new app will encourage people to want to learn more about our past, and

develop a genuine interest in local history. “The history of Western Sydney is full of fascinating people, places and stories and it’s wonderful to see this being shared with a new and larger audience through this new app,� Cr Thain said.

Silicon - An Underappreciated Nutrient In Bone Health Silicon is the second most abundant element on earth, and a key element in minerals such as quartz. For a long time, it was considered biologically inert, even though 1-2g exist in the human body. But growing scientific evidence recognizes that silicon plays an essential role in the formation and maintenance of collagen containing connective tissues such as bone, ligaments and tendons.

Silicon facilitates the quality of bone matrix (the collagen reinforcing in bone) and bone mineralization. Research shows that silicon is involved in the production & structural stabilisation of bone collagen. It then aids the process of proper deposition of calcium around bone collagen to make ‘bone’.

Increased intake of bioavailable silicon has been associated with increased bone mineral density. In the 1970s, dietary deficiency in animals was shown to result in connective tissue & bone defects. Animal studies show that silicon is needed for: • bone formation independent of vitamin D • cross-linking of collagen and proteoglycans during bone growth • to make the collagen in bone matrix more calcifiable In silicon deficiency, bone collagen formation is depressed.

Silicon supplementation has been shown to reduce bone resorption & increases bone formation in an animal model of postmenopausal osteoporosis.

In osteoporotic postmenopausal women, supplementation

with monomethyl trisilanol has been shown to increase bone volume and femur and lumbar bone density as well as hip bone density.

Horsetail is the highest know plant source of silicon. Silicon can make up to 25% of the dry weight of this plant. Clinical studies in Europe show that incidence of osteoporosis is greatly reduced when some horsetail is added to the diet and fractured bones heal much more quickly when horsetail is taken.

So other than horsetail, what are good food sources of Silicon?

Natural levels of silicon are much higher in plant foods than in meat or dairy. Certain plants (generally monocotyledons) such as cereal grains, grasses, horsetail and some herbs are known as silicon accumulators.

They specifically take up silicon from soil, and accumulate 1020 times the silicon compared with non-accumulating plants (dicotyledons) such as legumes, using it to confer strength and rigidity to their stalks & seed coats. Thus, silicon is highest in the fibrous sections of these foods. For example, rice bran (seed coats) are very high in silicon. The skins of vegetables, that are normally peeled away, are also high in silicon – so don’t peel your veggies. Other foods such as dried fruits and green beans are also good sources.

So please, add some horsetail herb and high silicon foods to your diet. They’re a great insurance policy against and a treatment option for, osteoporosis.

Dealing with the Physical Symptoms of Grief The emotional symptoms are expected but people are surprised when grief manifests itself in physical symptoms as well. When this happens it can be very distressing.

A few common physical symptoms are: • Fatigue and sleeplessness – Grief is physically exhausting, you feel fatigued all the time and want to sleep but sleep alludes you.

• Aches and pains – sometimes these get so bad that you feel like you have a heavy flu. Your body is tense, fatigued and you’re not sleeping; causing these aches and pains.

• Shortness of breath and tight chest – sometimes is a constant symptom and sometimes comes and goes.

• Headaches – grief is filled with stress and tension, which results in headaches.

• Forgetfulness – Losing keys, forgetting appointments etc. can be very distressing. In most people this subsides with time.

• Lacking focus – Not being able to take on new information or zoning out and thinking of your loved one or your life without them is common.

• Changes in appetite or tummy problems are also common.

Tips to relieve grief symptoms: • Relaxation, massage, meditation, yoga, reading, deep breathing, to-do lists, routines, walking, eating healthy food, try to get 7-8 hours of sleep.

• Feel your feelings and don’t let anyone tell you how you should be feeling.

• You might need extra help from your doctor, dietitian or counsellor.

• Have a good support network of friends and family.

Remember, you’re not alone and talking about your grief will help you learn to cope with it, feel heard and understood, which creates closeness with others.

My April article on self-care was received negatively by one reader who texted me about the impact on her family. If one person was upset, I’m sure there are more.

The offending parts were: 1. “I was shocked to read that research shows that swearing can reduce physical pain and lift self esteem”. I don’t advocate swearing.

2. “Watching funny cat videos while the boss isn’t watching boosts productivity, yay!” This was tongue in cheek and was meant to be a joke, not a direction.

Welcome to June!

What a great cover story, with news of a new market coming to the area from July. We were too excited to hold off on this one, and had to bring you the news right away!

If you have ever been to the Thornton Markets, you will know these markets are 'something else'. An exciting time for the local area as we see talented and aspiring locals showcasing their wonderful talents and wares.

This month's publication brings you a whole host of wonderful articles covering school, dance, community and history; and what a delightful story it is about the Arms of Australia on page 3. The many volunteers involved in preserving our heritage at this marvellous landmark do such a wonderful job.

Like many of you, we are currently renovating our home. Last month saw us de-clutter at a grand scale and give the nod of approval for work to begin on our first stage of works, Bathroom, Kitchen, and Pool.

While I am very excited to be dabbling in a bit of creative design around the home, all I can think of is that we'll be bathing in a portable shower during the bitter cold month of June. Who's idea was this anyway?

"Be silly, Be fun, Be different, Be crazy, Be You. Life is too short to be anything else".

For now, sit back and warm your toes by the heater and enjoy your Community News.
