Les Knox Awarded Ray Dukes Medal for Outstanding Service Leonay resident Les Knox has been awarded the 2019 Ray Dukes Medal for Outstanding Service to the Emu Sports Club and Leonay Golf Club.

Les moved to Leonay with his wife Judith in 1974 and quickly became involved in the Golf Club. Elected as Vice-Captain in 1977, Les became Captain in 1978 then President in 1979.

Les worked in several positions in the Golf Club, including President (13 years), Captain (3 years) and various other years as either Vice-Captain, Vice-President or General Committee, along with service on the Board of the Emu Sports Club.

Whilst on the Golf Committee, Les has been tireless in his endeavours on behalf of the Club, with his many roles. This has included Club Delegate to GolfNSW, Junior Development Officer, Match Committee member and Delegate to the NSW Veteran Golfers Association (NSWVGA). He has managed multiple Pennant teams including Major, Seniors, B&C Grades, Juniors and Mixed.

Les was subsequently awarded Life Membership of the Golf Club and, in 2015, received an Administration Award from Penrith Valley Sports Foundation.

His current roles include Vice-President of Leonay Golf Club, Club Delegate to GolfNSW, President of the Western Sydney Veteran Golfers Association (WSRVGA), Vice-President of the NSWVGA, Tournament Director of the NSWVGA Stroke-Play Championships and member of the Organising Committee for the Sports Club / Golf Club 50th Anniversary celebrations.

Youth Dancers Hit The Summit Local dancers from You Can Dance (YCD) in Emu Plains hit the world stage recently, after winning an extraordinary bid to compete at Varsity’s Cheer and Dance competition ‘The Summit’, held at Disney World Orlando in Florida.

Placing 9th against the best teams in the world, You Can Dance were ecstatic with their result. Competing in the Youth Pom division, their team of 13 dancers (aged between 9 and 11 years) were the youngest team in their division, against teams from Japan, Scotland and the USA. The standard was fierce, and the scores were incredibly close.

“The Summit is such a high calibre competition. To compete at this competition, teams must win a bid to enter. Our dancers won their bid at AASCF Nationals last November simultaneously becoming National Champions with a 1st place. The Summit is literally the biggest All-Star Dance and Cheer competition in the world for younger teams, so it was the ultimate honour to win a bid to participate and then represent Australia. Our girls did us all so proud with their strong and competitive performance” said Studio Director Jane Houlihan.

This is the second dance team from You Can Dance to compete internationally this year. Their Open Pom team became Nationals Champions (1st Place) in Dallas, Texas in January at the NDA (National Dance Alliance) competition.

You Can Dance are doing a remarkable job developing young talent with their Dance and Cheerleading programs. They are giving their students and families incredible opportunities to experience competing and travelling overseas, whilst making unforgettable lifetime memories.

“It’s sure been an exciting year so far and we look forward to what the rest of the competition season will bring our hardworking athletes. Travelling to both Texas and Orlando have been wonderful experiences our YCD dancers will never forget” ended Jane.

Ingredients 2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil 2 large (700g) French-trimmed lamb shanks 1 large brown onion, finely chopped 1 carrot, peeled, finely chopped 2 celery sticks, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 2 teaspoons cumin seeds, crushed 2 teaspoons brown mustard seeds 2 teaspoons sweet paprika 1 teaspoon ground coriander 400g can diced tomatoes 400g can chickpeas, rinsed, drained 500ml (2 cups) Massel chicken style liquid stock 500ml (2 cups) water 100g trimmed silverbeet (about 1/2 bunch), chopped Natural yoghurt, to serve (optional) Method 1. Heat half the oil in a large non-stick frying pan over high heat. Cook lamb for 1-2 minutes each side or until browned.

Transfer to a large (6L) slow cooker.

2. Heat remaining oil over medium heat. Cook onion, carrot and celery, stirring, for 5 minutes or until soft. Add garlic, cumin, mustard, paprika and coriander. Cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Transfer vegie mixture to slow cooker. Stir in tomato, chickpeas, stock and water. Cover. Cook on low for 6 hours 30 minutes.

3. Transfer lamb to a bowl. Once cool enough to handle, shred meat and discard bones. Return meat to slow cooker. Add silverbeet. Cover. Cook for a further 20 minutes. Season.

Serve with yoghurt, if using.

Opening Lapstone Hill Tunnel - the Missing Link Blue Mountains City Council is seeking partnership with the NSW Government to open the Lapstone Hill Tunnel, for use by the public.

Council is asking Hon Melinda Pavey MP, Minister for Water, Property and Housing, to consider investing in the rehabilitation and restoration of the Lapstone Hill Tunnel so that it can be considered for activation and public use, in accordance with the Eastern Scenic Escarpment Master Plan.

Mayor Mark Greenhill said “The Lapstone Hill Tunnel is a significant historic structure within the Eastern Scenic Escarpment, with great potential for adaptive re-use. In particular, re-activation for public use that supports the amenity, economy and liveability of the lower mountains.

“The Eastern Scenic Escarpment Master Plan recognises the value of the site in that regard and contemplates activation for public use, subject to contamination and stabilization issues being resolved by the current owner, the NSW Government.

“Addressing these issues is necessary before the site can be considered for activation and/or transferred into a more active management regime by an appropriate land manager”.

Ward 4 Councillor Brendan Christie, who is working with the Mayor and community groups to advocate for the opening, said the tunnel was the missing link in activating the area for residents and visitors.

“Opening Lapstone Hill Tunnel would connect Glenbrook and Lapstone villages with Leonay and Emu Plains, as well as Penrith’s Great River Walk. It would provide the community with safe access across the area.

“Opening the tunnel is the missing link, in regards to activating the area. The potential is huge in regards to allowing the community to appreciate the tunnel for its history, as well as improving access.

“By working together, we may also be able to boost tourism and our local economy, by providing a unique location for visitors looking for adventure-style activities”.

50th Birthday Celebrations This year marks a huge milestone for Emu Plains Netball Club, with the local club celebrating 50 years since they first began back in 1969.

Formed by founding members Jill Beckhaus, Denise Newland and Lola Milsom, the club’s humble beginnings began with just three teams, consisting of one team in the Under 8’s and two teams in the Under 12’s. Their first uniform was the Emu Plains Public School sports uniform and they played in the lower Blue Mountains Association, before later joining the Penrith Netball Association when it was formed in 1972.

The 2019 netball season began last month, with the Annual March Past taking place at Jamison Park. Some of the younger players wore old uniforms dating back to the late 1970’s and founders Jill Beckhaus and Denise Newland proudly carried the flag.

This was followed by a special high tea at Emu Sports Club to celebrate 50 years and was attended by many past and present members of Emu Plains Netball Club. Some travelled from as far as Newcastle and Queensland to join a fun-filled afternoon where many memories and photos were shared, as well as a delicious birthday cake!

“Our club has gone from strength to strength, because of the hard-working people who take on to coach, umpire and fill committee positions. Without the dedication and contribution of all of them, we would not be celebrating our 50th year this year.

“We have 20 teams this season, ranging in age from 6 years to 57 years. We look forward to another great season and wish all our teams, coaches, umpires and families a wonderful 2019 netball season” said Elizabeth De Marzi, President of Emu Plains Netball Club.

Meet Melissa, Mum and founder of the travelling four.

I’m a master at chasing dreams, collecting memories and adventures, and celebrating the privilege of parenthood with my hubby and our two children. At the age of 40, I’ve also discovered I’m a space nerd (talk to me about NASA and space shuttles and I’ll be your friend forever!).

Where to Go for What we Know

I don’t know whether you saw it, but last month SBS ran a show called “Christians Like Us�.

It was like “Big Brother� for Christians. They got ten people from different parts of Australia, different backgrounds and spiritual history, and put them together in a house for a week.

Then, every so often they lobbed in an “issue grenade� and filmed what happened next. Issues included clergy abuse, same sex marriage, and abortion. Now those are sensitive issues at the best of times, but the thing was, the housemates had such widely varying views that there was significant disagreement. That’s great for television, but hard going for those involved, and next to impossible to tease apart if you were watching and wanted to understand what Christians actually believe.

When I thought about it, and what was going on, I realised the reason it was so hard, was everyone identified as ‘Christian’ but had a different take on what it meant. Actually, they had different sources of authority. Some drew on their experience, some on long held traditions, some on human reason, and some from the Bible. Everyone drew on all of them to some extent, but when it came down to it, one or the other was their final authority.

What about you? What’s your final authority when it comes to your faith, and understanding the world, and knowing God and yourself? I’ve benefited in some way or other from all those authorities I’ve mentioned, but I’m convinced the Bible is the best and final authority on what it means to be a Christian, because it’s the book about Jesus Christ, by Jesus Christ, who put the Christ in “Christians�. Removing the Biochemicals Lurking in your Muscles that cause Spasms & Pain?

Continuing on from last month.....

Shah etal created an acupuncture needle that allowed them to compare the relative concentrations of 8 key pain upregulating biochemicals in healthy muscle & from muscle containing trigger points confirmed by EMG. The biochemicals measured were TNFι, IL1β, serotonin, bradykinin, substance P, acid (H+), norepinephrine & calcitonin-gene-related-peptide (CGRP). So, what did they find?

1.

Measurements taken immediately after inserting the needle into: a. the superficial layer of the muscle (but not into the trigger-point proper) showed that muscle with: i. active trigger points always contained high levels of all pain biochemicals, ii. latent trigger points contained slightly more than healthy muscle

iii. no trigger points (healthy muscle) had lowest levels b. the trigger-point proper, showed levels of muscle CGRP and substance P were: i. greatest for active trigger points, ii. much less for latent trigger points iii. lowest in healthy muscle 2.

Needling a muscle’s trigger point significantly reduced the pain producing biochemicals CGRP & substance P afterward The pain promoting biochemicals in muscles with trigger points cause muscle to become hard & swollen with fluid.

While this fluid remains in the muscle with all the biochemicals dissolved in it – the muscle remains dysfunctional & in pain.

We are Relocating to Bigger Premises We will be relocating to bigger premises in the next month.

We will be located on the same road as we are currently on, Wentworth Road, but just further down the road.

The new premises have been renovated to accommodate a veterinary hospital. The premises are huge! There are double brick walls, 3m high ceilings and a green bull nosed verandah around the front of the building. We will even have a concrete driveway and carpark! There will still be an off leash park in the front yard for you and your dogs to enjoy.
