Local Pioneering Family Honoured

It is not very often that your family has a reserve named in its honour, but that is exactly what has happened for lifelong resident, Bruce Turner. Bruce’s great-great-grandfather, John Ausburn, moved to Penrith to establish his family in the mid-1800s. Since then, Penrith has been home to seven generations of the Ausburn family. The family is listed among our city’s pioneering families – an integral group of people who aided the growth and development of the Penrith we know today.

In April, the Mayor of Penrith Cr John Thain acknowledged the Ausburn family by unveiling a plaque naming Ausburn Reserve, in Emu Plains, in honour of the contributions made to our community in sporting, health and voluntary pursuits. Miracles happen once a month in Emu Plains, as an enthusiastic little group of locals come together to help make life easier for underprivileged girls by producing and assembling Days for Girls reusable menstrual hygiene kits.

Days for Girls International is established in 70 countries with the aim to provide clean and reliable menstrual hygiene solutions that enable young girls to attend school every day of every month and thus receive the education that they deserve which is instrumental in breaking the poverty cycle.

In some countries, poor girls have no option but to use dirty rags, newspaper, hemp even stones or leather which can cause infection and infertility. Their kits enable young girls and women to have clean, safe and more hygienic items to manage their cycle, with dignity and confidence. The kits are hand made by volunteers and field tests show they can last three years which is enough time for most of their recipients to finish school.

Their kits are packed in a cotton drawstring carry bag with two zip lock bags, a small bar of soap, one washer, two pairs of panties, two cotton washable but also waterproof shields and eight washable flannelette liners, that used as instructed are leak proof and shame proof.

The Emu Plains chapter, which started in July 2014 has gone from strength to strength and are lucky to have been generously given the use of a guide hall by the Nepean Valley Trefoil Guild. Volunteers of all ages (7 – 83 years) come together to cut, pin, sew and assemble kits as well as chat, laugh and enjoy lunch together on the first Sunday of each month. Some of their especially keen volunteers also take extra work home with them between “Sew Days”. Since 2014, they have sent hundreds of kits to girls in remote areas of the Northern Territory, Uganda, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Cambodia, The Philippines, PNG, Syria and India. They have also distributed to 910 young girls in Bangladesh and been instrumental in helping start Days for Girls Bangladesh, which is run by a textile factory owner as a social enterprise.

There has been wonderful feedback from recipients – no school days lost, greater confidence and knowledge of how their bodies function. They are also passing on this knowledge to their parents, family and friends.

If you can sew or even if you can’t, they invite you to come along for a fun day doing something very worthwhile.

Help them to prevent: Days of isolation, Days of shame, Days of missing school, Days of lost income, Days lost due to lack of access to feminine hygiene products. Donations are gratefully accepted.

Hope Beyond Cure Too many people die from Cancer. Who doesn’t know someone who has had it. Who hasn’t lost someone they care about to it. What hope is there in the face of it?

Now Cancer isn’t just one condition, it comes in many forms, and many are treatable. But I expect your first reaction to the ‘c’ word is the same as mine - hopelessness.

Just last month I was away with a man who had experienced Cancer himself. His name is David McDonald. He’d heard the words ‘tumour’ and ‘incurable’ in the same week. He was given thirteen months to live. He expected to die.

That was five years ago now, but they have been perhaps the longest years of David’s life, and he’s still incurable. He talked with us about the grief he went through, and the tears, and the pain. And he also spoke with us about his search for hope in the midst of it all. It wasn’t a new search for him. Maybe you could call it testing his hope under stress, under the pointy shadow of death itself. Would he put his hope in a cure? Would he put it in the people who loved him? Would he put it in understanding his Cancer? In the end the limits of any and each of those hopes led him to hope beyond a cure. His hope was the resurrection of Jesus Christ. If He rose again from death, David could have confidence that he could too.

Too many people die from Cancer. And David McDonald will

die too. But from his experience of Cancer he’s done us all a favour. He’s written a little book called ‘Hope Beyond Cure’. In it he shares what he shared with us. He wrote it in the hope that other people experiencing Cancer themselves or through someone they love will have hope too, hope beyond cure. If you’d like a copy let us know. So, ‘prejudice’ means that we judge someone before we get to know them.

When I asked the kids at school what they feel other kids judge them on, they said… "skin colour, being smart, being quiet, being chubby or skinny, being tall or short, race, clothing, religion, disability, stereotypes, mental health, special interests, appearance."

That’s a lot of prejudice! And prejudice can lead to teasing, exclusion, misunderstanding, and in extreme cases, bullying.

When we are busy pointing out difference, we become blind to the ways we are the same. This deprives us of the opportunity to get along with others and learn from each other.

We have also been talking about the concept of fairness.

Fairness is not everyone having the same. That’s actually not possible. A child who gets around in a wheelchair will always need a ramp. A child with autism or ADHD may need some learning support. They are getting something extra than everyone else in order to give them the same opportunities as other children. That’s life, and it’s a good lesson for children to learn.

So, how do we get to know someone? A good conversation may include: introducing yourself; complimenting the other person on something; asking questions (in moderation); finding common interests; being a good listener; introducing other topics; ending the conversation in a friendly manner (say it was nice talking to them, suggest talking later, offer to play).

It’s good to have a conversation with kids about this sort of stuff – prejudice, fairness, getting to know others. Sometimes kids are unintentionally judging or excluding other children because they are not aware of what they are doing. That causes a lot of unnecessary hurt, sadness, anger, and misunderstanding.

It makes it easier to support kids to learn new skills and behaviours when you have raised their awareness of these concepts. I love teaching kids, in gentle ways, how to think beyond themselves, stretching them to think and grow and learn. It helps to make people who know better and do better.

Local Pioneering Family Honoured Bruce, who was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2015, addressed the gathering describing some of the significant contributions his family has made to our area.

His uncle, Ken (Poker) Ausburn, was a life member of Penrith Rugby League Club and served on the board as Chairman up to his unexpected passing in 1976. He also advocated sporting and youth activities, including the formation of the local Police Citizens Boys Club. Bruce’s other uncle, Bob Ausburn, was a “true legend of Nepean”. He was a champion rower whose seventy-five year contribution to local rowing was recognised through life membership of the Nepean Rowing Club.

Another notable contribution was that of Winsome (Bonnie) Turner nee Ausburn, Bruce’s mother. She volunteered at the Nepean Blue Mountains Cardiac Support Unit for two decades, often with her brother Bob. Now at eighty-six years old, Bonnie is the sole surviving member of her generation of the Ausburn family.

Amazing Reading At Emu Heights Public School

Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith joined the Year 2 Library class at Emu Heights Public School to celebrate the school’s participation in the Premier’s Reading Challenge.

The PRC aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students and to enable them to experience quality literature. It’s not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely.

The PRC is open to all NSW students in Kindergarten to Year 9, in government, independent, Catholic and home schools. The challenge for students in K-2 is to read 30 books and students in Years 3-9 must read 20 books, some from the PRC list and some of personal choice.

Across NSW in 2016 an amazing 277,098 students completed the PRC. There were 7,492,209 books read by the participants and 2,488 schools who took part.

“The Year 2 class at Emu Heights School are keen readers with most having completed the challenge last year and this year they are well on the way with their reading,” said Stuart Ayres.

Fidget Spinner Cookies

Fun these School Holidays

Ingredients 2 ½ Cups all-purpose flour ¾ Cup sugar ¼ Teaspoon table salt 1 Cup unsalted butter, room temperature 2 Teaspoons vanilla extract 2 Tablespoons cream cheese, at room temperature Royal Icing of any colour for decoration Method 1. Preheat oven to heat oven to 350°F/180°C. 2. In a large bowl, add the flour, sugar, salt, and mix together with a wooden spoon, until fully incorporated.

3. Add the softened butter and continue to mix until the mixture looks crumbly and slightly wet, about 1 minute longer. Add vanilla and cream cheese and mix until dough just begins to form large clumps, about 30 seconds.

4. Transfer the dough to the table and knead dough by hand until it becomes a cohesive ball. Wrap in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.

5. Roll out the dough to ¼-inch thickness. Cut into the desired shape using cookie a cutter or a fidget spinner for the spinning part, and a water bottle cap to cut to make 2 centre circles for each cookie.

6. Take the extra dough and roll out again to ½-inch thickness.

With a straw, poke out small pegs that will act as dowels for the fidget spinner cookies.

7. With the same straw poke holes in the fidget spinner cookie centres and move it around in a circle widening the hole to be larger than the diameter of the pegs that were just punched out.

8. Place all the shapes on parchment-lined baking sheet and bake until light golden brown, about 15 minutes, rotating baking sheet halfway through.

9. Cool the cookies completely. Then decorate as you like with your favourite frosting or decorations.

10. Use frosting, caramel, or royal icing as glue to attach a peg to the backside of one of the small circles, place the fidget spinner cookie base over the peg and attach the second circle cookie with more frosting. Let all the frosting dry before attempting to spin.

Beat the School Holiday Winter Blues The school holidays are a great time for children to relax, connect with relatives and enjoy some freedom from their studies. It seems that parents of primary school-aged children either dread the holidays or love them. For some, the winter break is a chance to escape the daily grind and hit the ski slopes.

For those who stay home, it can often be a struggle to keep children entertained whilst managing the fighting, complaints of boredom and obsession with electronic devices.

Here are 5 budget-friendly suggestions to maintain your sanity and occupy your children these holidays: 1. Visit your local library and stock up on some interesting books, magazines, DVDs and CDs. Try to find some cookbooks with recipes you can cook together and audiobooks that your children can listen to on their own as a quiet time activity.

2. Invite friends or cousins over for playdates and/or sleepovers. These experiences give your children the social interaction they need and the added benefit is that although you have an extra child in your house, it somehow seems less hectic. Don’t believe me? Try and see for yourself.

3. Organising craft activities might sound like a lot of effort but you would be surprised at how engaging pipe cleaners, toilet rolls, sticky tape and boxes can really be. Set your children a specific design task or let them impress you with their imagination.

4. Go for a skate, scoot or ride to your local park to encourage your children to burn off some energy. Take snacks and a thermos of coffee and enjoy relaxing outside in the fresh winter air.

Not the NRL Beanie With the temperatures starting to drop, warmth is something that Lions are interested in providing. The Lions Club of Emu Plains is again presenting hand knitted beanies to the Oncology unit of Nepean Hospital (Cancer Care) for their patients undergoing treatment.

The presentation is made possible by a reader who saw an article about Lions previous donations and contacted Lions to offer her handiwork. Lions supplied the wool to her and when the finished product was returned, it showed her knitting makes every beanie individual and ‘special’ and gives the patients a feeling of identity, as well as warmth.

Emu Plains Lions are also working with the Oncology Unit and Our Community Cares, to provide 2 lie-flat medical treatment chairs at a total cost around the $10-12k mark, and hope to finalise the purchase within the month.

Fresh, New Look for Bakers Delight You may have noticed that Bakers Delight at Lennox Village now has a fresh, new look, thanks to a recent refurbishment of the store. The store was closed for 10 days throughout the renovation, but is now open and ready for business!

“We have carried out extensive renovations to the front service area with new signage, a new counter and wall decor. Many of our customers have complimented us on the new look of the bakery, especially the new counter which displays our products so much better. Seniors Meals and Shows at the Pioneer Tavern When it comes to food and entertainment for seniors, the Pioneer Tavern has it covered. Located in Penrith, they offer a senior’s menu which consists of ten delicious options. The senior’s meals are only $9.90 and also include Sara Lee cake and ice cream for dessert.

Cows Return To Emu Plains Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith last month announced that a cattle herd has arrived at the Emu Plains Correctional Centre. “Having cows at this site has been a long standing tradition and I know the local community will welcome their return,� said Stuart Ayres. “More cattle will arrive in coming months bringing the total up to about 50 head.� “The cattle herd will be used in the agricultural program as part of the rehabilitation of prisoners and I am pleased to see this will continue.�

The cows will be tended by minimum-security female inmates from the nearby correctional centre.

Magnesium - The Forgotten Bone Mineral!

Magnesium (Mg) has been defined the forgotten electrolyte, in bone. 60% of your body’s magnesium is contained in bone & although it makes up only 1% of the mineral in bone, deficiency can heavily impact bone health. There are many reasons for Magnesium deficiency including rare genetic conditions.

In modern society Mg deficiency is mostly due to poor diet and medications such as some diuretics, antibiotics or antineoplastic drugs.

Much of today’s diet consists of refined and/or processed cereal-crop carbohydrate foods from which most magnesium (Mg) has been removed or unavailable. Examples include cereal or toast for breakfast, multigrain sandwich bread for lunch; spaghetti bol, pizza, or fluffy white rice for dinner. Diuretics used for blood pressure control for example can cause loss of magnesium through the kidneys.

Research suggests that many western women have a Mg intake that’s 30-56% below their 320mg recommended daily intake (RDI), men 38-59% below their 420mg RDI. Some countries recommend much higher intakes i.e. 500 – 1250mg daily; and stress increases your Mg requirements to over 1000mg per day.

This can lead to Mg deficiency.

Animal experiments show us that Mg intakes 75% below requirement leads to decreased bone volume and trabecular thickness. How does this happen? Low magnesium intake and deficiency: 1. Alters form of mineral crystals in bone making bones much weaker 2. Lowers blood levels of ‘bone building’ parathyroid hormone (PTH)

Lowers the ability of ‘bone building’ and other cells to respond to PTH which can lead to loss of calcium through the kidneys 4. Reduces the body’s ability to convert vitamin D to its active form (1,25 vitamin D). which stimulates calcium uptake from food 5. Increases chronic production of inflammatory mediators which depress bone building and stimulate bone resorption resulting in weak bones [osteopenia] 6. May lead to low grade acidity of blood which increases calcium loss from bone. Mg probably buffers against blood acidity to prevent this.

Longer term use (over 2 years) of magnesium supplements after menopause prevented fractures. In one trial, 71% of women experienced a significant increase in bone density.

Interestingly very high Mg intake may be harmful to bone by: 1. Depressing bone mineralisation 2. Inhibiting bone mineral crystal formation 3. Producing mineralization defects leading to weaker bones and more fractures.

Many patients ask me, ‘so can’t I just take that as a supplement?’ The short answer - ‘Yes you can’! But you risk skewing metabolism when you take single nutrients, because they never work in isolation! So, most of the time, the best source is always whole unprocessed foods. Sesame seeds, Brazil nuts & almonds are three of the best magnesium sources; green leafy vegetables such as silver beet and spinach, beans, even kefir yoghurt are also excellent magnesium foods that will help keep your bones strong.

Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith welcomes the news that Penrith customers will have more express services and more seats when travelling to the Blue Mountains, Parramatta and the Sydney CBD. The improvements will be delivered as part of the More Trains More Services Program, a $1.5 billion NSW Government initiative to boost capacity across the network through hundreds of extra services, better infrastructure and new trains for Sydney.

From late 2017, Penrith customers will benefit from the following: • 24 new express trains on weekends to take them to and from popular Blue Mountains destinations.

• Dedicated 8-car weekend express trains travelling to and from the Blue Mountains

More than 25,000 additional seats every week, including an extra 18,000 on weekends; • A new weekday Sydney to Lithgow return express service including a stop at Penrith Station as well as Parramatta and popular Blue Mountains locations like Springwood, Katoomba and Mount Victoria.

Stuart Ayres said the improvements are as a result of increased demand for services between the Blue Mountains and the Sydney CBD. “Not only will these improvements be a huge win for those travelling to and from one of NSW’s tourism hot spots, it’s also fantastic for Penrith locals who can take advantage of additional trains taking them to destinations like Parramatta and the Sydney CBD for work or pleasure,” Stuart Ayres said.

Penrith customers travelling to Katoomba will also enjoy journey time savings of around 17 minutes on a return trip.

In addition, the NSW Government will fast track some further improvements in coming weeks by doubling capacity on six existing weekend Blue Mountains line services that service Penrith Station, providing customers with more than 4,000 additional seats on weekends.

And with that, we've moved into the second half of the year, just like that!

I quite like July. I love any excuse to pop a pair of fluffy socks on, nestled into my favourite lounge with my toes strategically placed in front of the heater.

Not only is July the month I celebrate my birthday (although as I age gracefully, its less likely I need to be reminded); I also enjoy all the wonderful hearty winter soups that grace the dinner table during these colder months.

There's nothing quite like a family coming together at the dinner table after a long, busy day of work, school, sport, dancing and all the other daily commitments thrown at us; to enjoy a delicious, warm and cosy meal... together.

July is a busy month for many. Families with school kids at home during the winter holidays, business owners as they tidy up their end of financial year commitments and reporting; and the community with many 'winter' events and wonderful new markets popping up to keep us entertained in our down time.
