Time For Big School!

It’s that time of year, where thousands of girls and boys across the state wave goodbye to their parents as they start ‘big school’ for the first time. One of those children starting school for the first time was local boy Dylan Scanlin.

Dylan, who turned 5 in January, started school at Emu Plains Public School this year. “He was very excited to start ‘big school’ at Emu Plains. Dylan has an older sister Jade who used to go here and a sister Kayla who is in year 5” said Trudy Scanlin, Dylan’s Mum. To help prepare him for ‘big school’, Dylan attended preschool in Blaxland for two days a week. He attended the transition playgroup and loved it, especially the canteen! “Dylan told his preschool teachers that he wasn’t worried about anything at school as he would just ask a teacher for help. He will really miss preschool, though he absolutely loved it” explained Trudy.

Emu Plains Public School has a long line of history in the Scanlin household and holds a special place in their hearts. Trudy Scanlin attended the same school when she was a child. Since leaving school, she has become a teacher and has even done casual work there over the years.

Despite the family ties to the school, Dylan insisted on showing his Mum around his new ‘big school’; “He was so excited, he had to give me a tour of the school all by himself” Trudy said.

I had wanted to start with a slightly belated ‘Happy New Year’, but after the events of the past month it just doesn’t seem appropriate. It has been anything but a happy time for the families of the more than 20 people who drowned over Christmas and New Year. That’s 3 to 4 times more than usual over this period, and almost as many water deaths as car fatalities. Some are calling it a drowning epidemic.

The worst thing is, so many of these tragedies are preventable.

From toddlers to teenagers and grown adults, factors such as unlatched gates, unfenced ponds, swimming alone and alcohol consumption all have played their part.

Even more frightening is the fact that in some of the deaths reported, there were no obvious risk factors at play. Fences and gates were safety compliant and closed, there was nothing to be climbed near the fence, however the child still made it into the pool and lost their life.

It can happen to any of us. On Christmas Eve my 2 year old son somehow managed to get his back float off, and was standing on the edge of the pool, about to jump in, when I saw him.

Adults were all around, just metres away, chatting, but no one was looking directly at my toddler. Thank goodness I noticed, but with a house full of guests, I could have just as easily been distracted for the next 2 minutes, and the splash may not have been heard by anyone amongst the chatter and music………it just doesn’t bear thinking about.

My point is, no one is immune, and we all have to be vigilant.

Which is where the layers of protection come in, so if one layer fails, hopefully the next will be the safety net that prevents a tragedy. Fence the pool, shut the gate, teach your kids to swim from a young age, ensure active adult supervision, and learn CPR, just in case. Never swim alone, wear a life jacket when boating, and alcohol and drugs should always be avoided when swimming or near water. Image | pexels.com

Emma Channels Her Inner Adele To many people, British songstress Adele is an inspiration who touches hearts all around the world with her soulful voice and meaningful songs like ‘Rolling In The Deep’, ‘Rumour Has It’ and ‘Hello’. One such person who has been inspired by her is local talented voice coach and singer Emma Kirk, who launched her show ‘The Adele Experience’ last year, performing as Adele.

Emma’s musical resume is very impressive, beginning at the age of just 9 years of age. This lead her to singing professionally at the age of 15 doing singing quests in the club circuit and joining a local band. Since then, she has performed alongside many well-known Australian artists such as John Farnham, Jimmy Barnes, Guy Sebastian, Human Nature, Christine Anu, Marcia Hines and Deni Hines.

Since launching ‘The Adele Experience’ at Evan Theatre in 2016, the show is running successfully throughout Sydney, Regional New South Wales and has received rave reviews on various cruise ship brands such as P&O and Princess Cruises. “Anytime I performed an Adele song, I would get a great reaction or response from my audience, so I did a little research and decided to produce my own show� said Emma. “She has also inspired me to have belief in myself as a performer in regards to not worrying about the status of body image in the music industry as she has a very ‘just do it’ attitude. This helped me launch myself as a soloist� she explained.

Covering Adele’s music and her vocal range is no mean feat and is testament to just how talented Emma really is. “It can be vocally challenging at times if my voice is not healthy, but most times I feel singing her songs comes quite naturally for me. I studied her voice for quite some time to ensure I captured her vocal style� replied Emma.

Despite her close affinity to Adele, Emma is yet to meet her musical inspiration; “I would love the honour of meeting her one day, purely to thank her for her music and inspiration to pursue my own musical dreams. I’m not sure if she knows about my shows, but I hope that if she does, she feels proud that I do her justice�.

Living Life To The Full It’s 2017. So what will get you out of bed in the morning?

Work you love. Or the income it provides. Or the recreation you enjoy. Or the people you live with.

Apple boss Steve Jobs was a guy who knew what got him up in the morning. Early on as Apple grew he offered a job to Pepsi CEO John Sculley. John was happy at Pepsi, and he was a success there, and the personal computer was a relatively new thing. But Sculley tells how Jobs clinched the deal with him. He asked him if what he was doing was worthwhile, "Do you want to sell sugared water for the rest of your life? Or do you want to come with me and change the world?"

Jesus Christ was on the scene long before Steve Jobs, and has had an even bigger effect. Jesus’ take on things is even more piercing, and at the same time, offers something more worthwhile - life, life beyond death. Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25-26) There are all sorts of things that motivate us, and many of them good. But as we’re getting into the rhythm of 2017, does any surpass this? I’ve been getting up for this reason for over 25 years now. I may not think of it first thing every day, and we all have days getting up feels like a drag, but the kindness of God is

this, Jesus came to make every part of life worthwhile, when it’s lived trusting and living for him.

Titles For Fox And Borrows, And An Upset For Anderson Our very own, two-time Olympic medallist Jessica Fox has overcome a severe throat infection and Rio Olympian Ian Borrows a limited preparation to post wins on the final day of the Australian National Slalom Championships at Penrith, last month.

Fox won both the women’s K1 and C1 titles, less than 24 hours after being prescribed antibiotics to fight off illness.

And Borrows withstood a challenge from some of Australia’s most promising young paddlers to win the men’s C1 title.

The biggest upset on the final day was in the men’s K1, where Victoria’s Tim Anderson edged out Rio Olympian Lucien Delfour for the gold medal.

Fox admitted she probably shouldn’t have been paddling.

“I wasn’t feeling 100 per cent, so it was good to still be able to push myself and race well,” Fox said.

“I’m actually quite sick. I had to go on antibiotics and probably shouldn’t have raced, but I really wanted to, and at least make a good run if I could.

“Everyone was quite close because it was an easy course, it meant everyone could attack and made it a really competitive race.”

Fox finished almost eight seconds ahead of Ros Lawrence in the K1 final, with sister Noemie taking the bronze, and then more than five seconds ahead of her younger sister in the C1, with Lawrence taking the bronze.

After some close racing in the qualifying rounds, Ian Borrows showed his class in the final of the men’s C1.

Borrows picked up a two-second penalty but still managed to finish more than three seconds ahead of Perth’s Brodie Crawford, with 18-year-old Tristan Carter third.

“After the heats I had a bit of pressure put on me, so I wanted to pull off a solid run,” Borrows said.

“I was feeling very rusty. I am coming off a pretty big break. I kept my fitness up but hadn’t been paddling much.

“It was a strong field, so I really wanted to keep in front of them and keep them at bay for as long as I can.”

A two-second penalty for a gate touch proved costly for Lucien Delfour in the men’s K1 final, relegating him to second behind Victoria’s Tim Anderson.

Anderson’s winning time was 87.21 seconds, 1.99 seconds ahead of the Rio Olympian.

Another Victorian, Jaxon Merritt, finished in third place.

Although there is a huge amount of pressure for children to learn a vast array of skills at school, the first and most enduring lessons are learnt at home within the context of the family and parent-child relationship. Parents are a child’s first teacher.

This year, I will focus on skills that you can teach your children within the family environment.

Recently, a parent said to me that her mother told her not to worry about her children squabbling and fighting. Grandma said “they’ll learn to sort it out themselves”. The mother asked me “is this right?’. I replied that children aren’t born with conflict resolution or problem solving skills. These skills need to be taught like you would teach a child to tie his/her shoe laces or use their manners. If “left to it”, most children will resort to using yelling, aggression, or withdrawal to resolve conflict because frankly that is what is role modelled for them most of the time.

Problem Solving 1. State what the problem is.

Most children (and many adults) will blame someone else for the conflict. I get children to state the problem in an objective way, without blame. Instead of saying “Jamie won’t share the ball with me”, we get to a point where the problem is stated as “we both want to play with the ball”. Blame is a dead end street, we get stuck and can’t find a way out.

2. After the problem is stated, we then have to come up with some solutions to the problem.

Children as young as 5 can usually come up with 4 or 5 solutions. It doesn’t matter to me if it is a silly solution (for example, ‘take the ball off Jamie’), because the next step sorts that out. I rarely provide children with a solution, because I don’t want them to become dependent on me to solve their problems. I want them to learn the skill and use it.

3. For each of the solutions, ask: • Is it safe?

• Is it fair?

• How will other people feel about it?

• Will it work?

4. Choose the best solution, and apply it.

5. Review how it worked. If it didn’t work, try another solution.

You will need to be really consistent in supporting children to learn and use this skill. It will take longer than a year of consistent use.

Over on my blog (https://handsheartsminds.wordpress. com/), I am going to be writing about the types of skills that we as parents need to teach children to give them great life skills. I have counted at least 30. I will also be trying to add a visual that you can download and put on the fridge or your noticeboard.

The Country Show Returns

A little bit of Mount Panorama will descend on Luddenham Showground on the 18th and 19th of February as the historic grounds will rumble to the roar of the 500-horse power V8 donks as Holden and Ford Utes scream around the main arena.

All the way from Adelaide, the Trackskill V8 Race Ute Show is unquestionably one of Australia’s most spectacular car stunt teams and has been seen all over the country. Another feature will see these daring drivers pit their talents again a horse, bike and supped up lawnmower in an obstacle course.

Living up to its motto of ‘The Country Show’, the annual event takes place for the 113th time on the picturesque Luddenham Showgrounds. The event is run entirely by a small, but very hard working committee, many of whom can trace their family’s association with the show all the way back to the first one.

The show will kick off each morning with horse classes held on the main arena, known through the equine industry as one of the major lead up events to the Sydney Royal Easter Show. There will be cowboys battling it out with rank bulls in the open bull ride including rodeo champions of the future in the steer and poddy calf rides. The main arena will feature the dog high jump contest, yank-a-ute for the adults and yank-a-buggy for the kids.

If artistic ability is more your style, there will be classes of painting, photography, quilt making, flowers, homebrew, farm produce and even Lego building. Always renowned for the quality stage entertainment, there will be a talent quest, reptile displays with a difference, clowns and shearing demos. The main band this year is ‘Rough Stock’, back by popular demand, this great country-rock band hails from Riverstone. And, of course, the fireworks on Saturday night will be under the control of Foti’s, who are responsible for the Sydney Harbour New Year’s Eve Fireworks Show.

Held in adjoining paddock will be the ever-popular sheep dog trials on Sunday. The day will also see the well-liked wood chopping contest. The stage program will include events such as ice cream eating, whip cracking and the Luddenham Country Kid hitting the stage.

Stuart Ayres Congratulates Students On Dreaming Big Last month, Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith congratulated local performers who participated in the Schools Spectacular on being part of the biggest-ever show in the entertainment icon’s 33-year history.

Stuart Ayres said performers from the electorate of Penrith were joined by more than 5,000 students from some 500 public schools from all over the state on the QUDOS Bank Arena stage at Sydney’s Olympic Park over four shows in late November 2016. “The Schools Spectacular theme was Dream Big, which was appropriate because it was the biggest show ever produced,�

Stuart Ayres said. “Schools Spectacular has already forged a reputation as a state significant event and last year’s offering took it to a whole new level. “Congratulations to all participating students, I know that both students and teachers work incredibly hard throughout the year to ensure the high quality of the performances.�

Calcium Supplements For Bone Strength: The Hidden Dangers Calcium and bone health, a huge topic & almost impossible to do it justice without writing a book!! But this month I’ll look at the possible down sides to calcium supplements. Calcium supplement can be dangerous for two reasons.

In the short-term, excess calcium intake (usually above 4g Ca / day, but incidents have been reported with as little as 1g) can lead to Milk-alkali syndrome - headache, mental clouding, nausea, vomiting and renal failure. This has been more common recently among older women due in part to emphasis on calcium therapy for osteoporosis, especially when combined with OTC medicines for reflux.

In the long term mounting evidence links the taking of ‘calcium supplements to prevent bone-loss’ to an increased risk of death from heart attack. Much recent research has made this link, but the research also says that when higher calcium intakes were achieved from just food (no supplements) risk of cardiovascular actually decreased.

Calcium concentration in the blood stream is very tightly controlled at a level of 1.25mM per litre of blood. This control is maintained over a wide range of calcium intake ‘from food’, but it’s not maintained when calcium comes from supplements.

Research has shown that 9% of women taking calcium

supplements had evidence of hypercalcemia (high blood calcium), 31% had hypercalcuria (excess calcium spilling into urine).

Importantly it seems that when calcium is taken as a supplement little of ‘the additional calcium‌ is incorporated into bone by adults’, but instead, ‘it may lead to calcium accumulation in the body, i.e. it can deposit in & calcify our arteries and other soft-tissues of the body. Calcification of the arteries causes hardening & increases risk of death from heart attack.

This is where vitamin K, so important for strengthening bone (see previous article) comes in again. 2 Ingredient Strawberry Fudge • Easy • Makes 24

Ingredients (16 oz) can of strawberry frosting 12 oz bag of white chocolate chips Method 1. Prepare a 9x9 pan by spray lightly with cooking spray.

2. Over a double boiler, or in the microwave, melt your white chocolate chips.

3. When chips are melted, remove from heat and stir in your strawberry frosting, evenly.

4. Spread in your prepared pan and place in fridge to set for 30 minutes.

5. Cut into squares to serve.

Local Emu Plains Little Athletics Club athlete Billy Bradford recently came away from the Zone Little Athletics Championships with a record four gold medals from four events, leading the competition in his age. What made Billy’s performance even more impressive was that it was his first representative experience at little athletics, which also included breaking a Zone Championship record.

Billy won gold in four events in the Under 7 Boys category; 50m, 70m, 100m and 200m. He broke the record in the 50m, which stood for 11 years. Due to Billy’s age group, he didn’t progress to the Regional Championships, however it was a great experience for the Leonay champion.

“We are very proud of Billy. He did really well” said Katherine Bradford, Billy’s Mum. Amazingly, the only training Billy does is with Emu Plains Little Athletics Club at their local competition every Friday night, under the watchful eye of local Marty Romer. “Billy is always in training as he runs everywhere. He never walks” added Katherine.

Billy’s favourite athlete is Olympic Superstar Usain Bolt. It’s not rare to find Billy watching Bolt’s running highlights on YouTube when he is at home with his family.

Lions Ready To Roar!

With 6 out 11 teams making the finals in 2016, the Emu Plains Glenmore Park Lions AFL Club are charging into the 2017 season with a roar. The first Junior AFL club in Western Sydney to receive the Quality Club Award last year, the Lions are excited about the year to come.

Club members include strong numbers of 5 to 9 year old Auskickers and teams in all age divisions from 10 to 17 years old. The Over 15’s Girls Team were a force to be reckoned with last year and has prompted the approval for the creation of the Under 15’s Girls Team.

Pre-season Training Nights will kick off from the week of the 7th February, with the first 2 being recommended for all who are considering playing AFL and wanting to meet the club members and just have a go to see if it is the sport for them. On both nights, a free BBQ will be available for everyone wanting to check it out.

The annual Rumble in the Jungle Trial Day will then take place at the end of March, with the official season launch on 2nd April, 2017.

During the year, the Lions will also host of number of prestige events including the Annual Trivia Night, the Sportsman’s Lunch and, for the first time, the Shopping Bus Trip.

It is never too late to decide that AFL is the sport for your family. Registrations for both Auskick and Junior AFL can be made online by following the link on the Lions webpage. A club registration will be held on the preseason night on 7th February commencing at 6pm, for new or existing members. No preexisting skills are required to get involved – just a willingness to give it a go!

Good Grief Valentine’s Day! This is a cruel celebration day for those who have suffered the death of their partner. It’s a day to rejoice the love between two people, to be romantic and thoughtful.

There’s heaps of advertising about romancing your loved one.

Buy chocolates, jewellery, flowers, dinner, movies and anything else you can think of. It’s difficult to watch others knowing you won’t be with the one you love, doing any of these things or receiving anything to celebrate the love that you share.

Okay, let’s make it a day of love, a time you honour your lovedone the way you choose. Your grief is unique, don’t let anyone tell you how you should be feeling. Don’t feel guilty wanting to be alone. Give yourself permission to have your feelings (whatever they are).

Remembering Your Valentine Here are some activities you can do on Valentine’s Day to celebrate the love you shared.

1. Write a love letter – remember how you were with each other; recall stories of adventure, love and romance; your feelings of grief and how you’re coping with day-to-day life.

I’m sure you can add to this list.

2. Donate to a charity in your loved one’s name.

3. Invite friends and family for a meal to remember your loved one. Cook their favourite food and serve their favourite beverage. Make a toast to them.

4. Buy a special candle, cook a special meal, light the candle

and remember wonderful times you spent together.

5. If you feel strong enough, watch a movie that you enjoyed together. This can be done by yourself or with friends and family.

6. Self-care is important. Attend a yoga class, spend a day at the spa, have a massage, facial etc. Your choice.

7. Volunteer- either for a charity or R.S.P.C.A. or animal shelter.

Helping others is uplifting, gives you satisfaction and connection.

Don’t push yourself, do what is comfortable and enjoy your day as much as you can.

The New Year period is always my favourite. A great time to refocus and set goals. The perfect opportunity to take onboard any challenges from years gone by, learn and grow from them. It's these challenges that have made us stronger and more determined to reach our newest goals.
