They’re Off And Running!

The threat of a thunderstorm couldn’t stop the launch of Nepean River Parkrun last month with a huge crowd turning out for its first official run. Nepean River Parkrun is the second Parkrun event in the Penrith area, with the first one, Penrith Lakes established over two years ago.

With 240 runners, walkers and volunteers attending the launch, it was just as well the storm clouds cleared because by virtue of its kick off date, Nepean River Parkrun became the 1000th Parkrun event in the world. Parkrun is a free, weekly, timed five kilometre run or walk (not a race!), based on a concept founded in England in 2004. There are over 1000 Parkruns worldwide, all with the same philosophy: Parkrun is open to everyone, free, safe and easy to take part in. These events take place in pleasant parkland surroundings and people of all ages and abilities are encouraged participate; from walkers, pram pushers, young children and seniors right through to ultra-marathoners and even Olympians.

Registration for Parkrun is free and only needs to be done once for each person. Participants receive a unique barcode which they bring to events anywhere in Australia or around the world, and this is used to record their results.

Sheri Thomson is one of the Event Directors of Nepean River Parkrun. After regularly participating and volunteering at Penrith Lakes Parkrun for nearly two years, Sheri was quick to jump on board with setting up the new event. “For the last few years my whole family has enjoyed going to Parkrun – for us, Saturday is Parkrun day,” Sheri said. “Sometimes we try to get a personal best time and other times we run with the kids. My seven-year-old daughter, Hannah has completed 20 Parkruns, while my now fiveyear-old son Daniel was just four when he completed his first. Lions Set For A Big Day The Lions Club of Emu Plains will be selling freshly cut Xmas trees for $35.00 from 6:30-11:30am on Saturday 10th December at Lions Park, Great Western Highway near Melrose Hall at Emu Plains.

They have ordered 80 trees, so it pays to get there early to ensure you don’t miss out. All proceeds from the sale of Christmas trees goes to Our Community Cares.

Our Community Cares aims to increase the level of patient care in the outpatient services of Nepean by providing funds for equipment beneficial to the patients’ well-being. They collaborate with the management of the outpatient medical services to determine priorities of the required resources.

Our Community Cares aims to assist the needy and aged by providing support to enhance their quality of life.

Later that day, the Lions Club will be manning the ‘donation buckets’, seeking a gold coin for car parking at the Emu Sports Club at Leonay, where Carols on the Course will take place, with the ‘fun’ starting around 4:00pm and capped off by a traditional Lions BBQ (where again the proceeds go to Our Community Cares) and fireworks at 8:00pm.

Celebrate this Christmas We celebrate and remember all sorts of important things. We celebrate the birth of a child, of a new little person. We celebrate history changing events. We celebrate royal visits. We celebrate amazing rescues and acts of love. And we remember great sacrifices on days like ANZAC and Remembrance day.

How amazing is it then that Christmas should combine threads like each of these all into one!

Last month I reflected on how God gave us our identity and purpose by making us in his image (Genesis 1:26-27). That’s life shaping. But Christmas launches the story of just how far He would go to love us. You see Jesus’ birth was the beginning of a royal visit. God himself came as one of us, to live with us. And it was the launching point of His great rescue. What would finish at Easter, began at Christmas. He came to sacrifice himself to rescue us from ourselves, from our sin, from our go our own way attitude to him (Matthew 1:18-25).

If you ever wondered how valuable you are, and how loved you are, you only have to look to Him. That’s worth celebrating!

So this Christmas we’re turning it on with our Christmas Eve Fair and outdoors Carols night. We’d love you to come and join us – participate, relax, sing, listen, celebrate! We love being a part of Emu - Leonay, and what better way of celebrating than a Christmas Eve Fair and Carols. You can see all the details on this page and the next.

Cinema Under The Stars Is Back Grab your favourite camping chairs, picnic blankets, popcorn and drinks because the free Cinema Under The Stars will be on again at the Emu Plains Anglican Church in January.

This will be the third year that the Cinema Under The Stars has been successfully running, with each year more and more locals coming along and enjoying a great night out with family and friends.

“The weeks after Christmas are such a great time of the year, and we wanted to give a gift to our community, to help everybody enjoy spending time with each other” said Roger Cunningham, Senior Minister at Emu Plains Anglican Church.

The Cinema Under The Stars will run over two weeks, with two movies, Star Wars: The Force Awakens on Saturday 7th January and Finding Dory on Saturday 14th January.

Gates will open at 6:30pm, with the movies starting at sunset on both weeks. There will be plenty of parking available. A sausage sizzle, popcorn and slushies will be available to purchase. It promises to be a night the whole family will remember. Emu Plains Anglican Church is located at 26 Short Street in Emu Plains. Christmas Pottery Exhibition

The Nepean Potters Society will be holding their annual Christmas exhibition in the Glenbrook Community hall on Saturday the 3rd and Sunday the 4th of December.

The sale commences at 9am and closes at 5pm on each day and entry is free.

People who attend the exhibition can expect to see a wide variety of unique pottery for sale which would make ideal Christmas gifts.

New Beginnings For Natalie

For the past five years, Natalie Face has been helping people stay fit and lead a healthy lifestyle in the local area, with Contours Emu Plains and The Fit-Nest in Emu Heights. She has helped transform many lives over this time, but now it’s time to say goodbye as The Fit-Nest closes its doors.

“I took over the gym as Contours Emu Plains on the 1st November 2011. In July 2014, we went independent to become The Fit-Nest. Since then, the business has had some massive changes” said Natalie.

“Becoming The Fit-Nest was huge. We went from being a Franchise with a specific operational model, to becoming completely independent. We had to incorporate all the things our members loved from the original circuit gym, whilst introducing many new things such as our boxing and personal training space, some more functional training, lots of new classes, and some new equipment, all without losing our sense of community and personal touch. For me it has been a huge learning experience and I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know some very inspiring women, both our members and the staff who have come to the gym to work and work out. It has been a labour of love for the last 5 years and one that has been very rewarding” she explained.

The inspirational business owner will certainly miss working in the local area, with lots of friendships formed over the years working with her customers. “The best thing about being in Emu Heights is the sense of community. Being over the river from Penrith and right at the foot of the Mountains, we have a similar feeling here to that of being in a smaller regional town.

People are friendly and look out for one another. I have seen many great friendships start and grow here, and I am positive that these friendships will continue long after the gym is gone” lamented Natalie.

Natalie promises she won’t disappear completely and she will still be doing personal training and group classes “here and there”. She currently has a group boxing/kickboxing class on Monday nights at Blaxland Public School Hall that people can attend for $10 per class and hopes to put on a few more classes around the local area. Natalie will also be working for another local fitness centre which she looks forward to.

If your New Year’s resolution is to work towards a healthy lifestyle, Natalie has this exercise advice, “Find an exercise or sport that you love, and do it often. Move when you can – the old cliché of ‘take the stairs, not the lift’ still rings true today”.

Continuing Our Series on Parent Traps…

This month we wrap up the series on parent traps that we have been focussing on all year…

Blame Is A Dead End Street.

It stops us from looking clearly at a problem, and how we can change things so that our children (and ourselves) can learn new skills and behaviours.

It is always better to try to solve a problem in a proactive way rather than being consequence-driven. Being proactive means thinking about what we need to teach our children and how we can teach them, with the aim of preventing the mistaken behaviour.

Blame takes two forms: • Blaming The Child For How You Feel “You are making me angry.”

Who owns your emotions? You do. Yes, your child may be doing something extremely cheeky, but your emotional response is your own.

It’s no wonder that many children blame others for the problems they are experiencing. We role model it for them.

Take responsibility for own thoughts, feelings, and actions.

Most child behaviour does not require a light-speed reaction.

You can take 20 to 30 seconds to take some deep breaths and centre yourself before your respond to your child’s behaviour.

• Blaming yourself, and thinking that you are a bad parent.

You cannot be a calm, patient, and consistent parent if you are stressed or depressed. Knowledge is power. These days, most parents don’t want to smack or yell at their children, but they don’t have any other strategies in their parenting toolbox.

A parenting workshop or course, either in person or online, will provide additional tools to enable you to be a more positive parent.

• Blaming Someone Else.

If you blame someone else (partner, siblings, teacher) for your child’s behaviour, you may come to the conclusion that there is nothing you can do to change it. This can lead to frustration and may affect your relationship with other people and your child.

There is no such thing as a perfect parent or a perfect child. Most of the training is on-the-job and all new skills and behaviours take time. When we have a positive attitude towards our parenting and the belief that we can make change, the whole family can benefit.

Carols On The Course It’s time to start celebrating the festive season, with the Annual Carols On The Course held on Saturday 10th December at Emu Sports Club.

Kicking off at 5.30pm, the Carols will feature a talented lineup of local singers, dancers and entertainers. There will also be a spectacular fireworks display, jumping castle, sausage sizzle and bar, glow sticks and wands for sale, and let’s not forget our guest of honour – SANTA! Now in their 12th year, the Carols are a fantastic event with nearly 3,000 community members coming together to celebrate in 2015.

‘Carols On The Course’ is free to attend, with proceeds from the night donated to ‘Our Community Cares’, a local charity that assists the aged and needy in the Penrith and Nepean area, and aims to improve their quality of life. ‘Our Community Cares’ delivers much needed community support such as providing food to feed the homeless, equipment to outpatient services of Nepean to increase patient comfort and well-being, and support to local aged care residents.

It is sure to be a great night, and raising money for a great cause, so show your support, bring your blanket and get into the Christmas spirit!

New Golf Professional at Leonay There was a bright new face in the Pro Shop at Leonay Golf Club last month, with newcomer Corinne Kelleher taking on the role of resident Golf Professional.

Corrine has been working in the Golf industry for twelve years since 2004 and is familiar with the local area thanks to stints at both Penrith and Dunheved Golf Clubs. Corrine was also the head Professional at the Lynwood Country Club (Pitt Town) from 2012 to 2015, before working at the Professional Golf Association (PGA) as the Member Services Coordinator. Whilst working in the latter role, Corinne looked after the 'Trainee Program' and also ran the 'Legends Tour' events.

Golf runs in the family, as Corinne is married to Adam Kelleher, who is the Head Professional at Campbelltown Country Club.

The Pro Shop will undergo a radical change under the management of Corinne, who will increase the amount of equipment and accessories which will be available. McCarthy Education Chat Show Stirs The Airwaves Craig Laffin, McCarthy Catholic College’s radio host loves Monday nights! Craig hosts the McCarthy Educational Chat Show on WOWFM 100.7, the Nepean, Lower Blue Mountains and Western Sydney Community Radio. Craig said, “Each Monday between 6-7pm, I have the privilege of ‘chatting’ with wonderful and fascinating guests to my show, which is now in its fourth year. I have chatted with guests young and old, from 5th Grade primary students, through to very senior citizens”.

Guests to the show have represented McCarthy Catholic College, state, other catholic and independent schools (primary and secondary /teachers and students), Western Sydney University, educational authorities, community organisations, sport and business. McCarthy Catholic College presents the show, as part of its commitment to the Greater Nepean Community.

“I have chatted with bald 16-year-old girls who participated in the World’s Greatest Shave and 16-year-old boys who have walked the Kokoda Track; young teenage sport champions; founders of several organisations, including assisting cancer patients, victims of domestic and sexual violence and children of Vietnam veterans. While another guest was the inspiring entrepreneur and founder of the proposed Blacktown Zoo; teachers and school students achieving great learning and teaching; the young university students who founded WSU Rotoract; WSU PhD students with research having world impact implications; WSU lecturers leading the way to academic and business achievement; educational experts guiding parents towards competent numeracy and literacy; Careers Advisers with pragmatic and good advice – there have been over 250 guests on the show! During each show, I aim to help guests present their story in a positive and entertaining way. There

is always laughter and some banter. I often tell stories against myself, as a way of helping guests express themselves and sound even better!” Craig said with a laugh.

Most recent guests have included six WSU PhD postgraduate students, researching water conservation, auditory processes (including infants), detection of kidney disease in children and crowdfunding. In mid-December Professor Kathryn Holmes, a world expert in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) will be a guest. And on a much lighter note, recent guests have been from Ruby Productions Theatre Company. The WOWFM 100.7 studio has rebounded to laughter, exuberant chat and the acting out of plays. Agatha Christie’s A Murder is Announced is the most recent. Striking actor Margareta Moir (Letitia Blacklock) and Steve Donelan (Director) acted out several scenes. McCarthy Year 10 student Nick Nisbet and English teacher Rachel Miller acted a scene from A Boy Overboard, a play performed by Year 10 Drama for Year 8.

Give a Gift For Life this Christmas!

Stuck for gift ideas this Christmas? In an emerging trend, grandparents, parents,carers and relatives are thinking outside the (gift) box, and bypassing more traditional presents for experiential presents, or gifts which teach children a skill.

Swimming lessons proved to be one of the most popular choices last year, with gift voucher sales in 2015 showing an increase of over 50% on the previous year’s numbers.

With the weather heating up, it is important to remember that drowning is still the biggest cause of accidental death in Australian children under 5, with the majority of deaths occurring in backyard swimming pools. Encouragingly, each year registered swim schools in Australia conduct over 20 million lessons to approximately 600,000 families nationwide, however an estimate from Royal Lifesaving Australia suggests that less than 25% of all children in Australia are being taught to swim by commercial swim schools each year.

“I think parents and grandparents in particular are looking for gifts that will enhance their child’s learning outcomes, or provide them with a skill or an experience.” Alan Bentley, owner of Nepean Swim and Fitness stated. “Of course children’s safety is a huge factor in the decision making process when choosing the gift of swimming lessons, but I am also hearing from parents that they are reluctant to give their children another piece of technology to encourage couch potato habits, and instead would like to see their children get out and get active.

A gift that ticks both these boxes represents value for money to parents” said Bentley.

Bentley added “Interestingly, we are also seeing an increase in enquiries for our CPR courses for carers, so I think the water safety messages and behaviours are really starting to be taken onboard and practiced in the wider community. However while drowning’s are still taking place in Australia, there is always room for improvement.”

“Parkrun is great because it gets people out into the fresh air. Everyone can participate at their own pace whether that’s flying through the course in 17 minutes or taking more than an hour to walk it at a leisurely pace. That’s the beauty of it.

Everyone can participate and nobody can come last because we have a volunteer – the tail runner – whose job it is to make sure nobody’s left behind. Everyone who completes the course and scans their barcode will get an official time” explained Sheri.

“As well as all the participants, volunteers are a huge part of the Parkrun experience and we couldn’t make it happen without them. We have lots of volunteer roles available so there’s something everyone can do. We encourage all runners to volunteer at least three times a year. That’s part of the Parkrun spirit. I am thrilled that our launch went off without a hitch and look forward to many more Parkruns to come” Sheri said.

Both Nepean River and Penrith Lakes Parkruns are on every Saturday, at 8am, however first-timers are encouraged to arrive before 7.45am for a briefing. Nepean River Parkrun’s course starts on the pathway alongside Jamison Road near Cables Wake Park, heading towards the river where the course makes two loops on the eastern side of the river before heading back to the finish line on the Jamison Road pathway.

Parkrun is held rain or shine, however severe weather events could cause cancellation for safety reasons, so check the Facebook page on Saturday mornings if the weather looks threatening.

2kg Frozen Rolled Turkey Breast 1 Orange, Juiced 40ml (2 Tablespoons) Olive Oil Rosemary Sprigs + Gravy, to Serve

Preheat oven to 180°C. Defrost turkey in the fridge overnight. Place in a large roasting pan with the foil on and roast for one hour 15 minutes. Remove the foil.

Combine orange juice and oil together and use to baste the turkey breast. Return to the oven and roast for a further 30 minutes.

Slice the turkey, garnish with rosemary and serve with gravy.

16 Chocolate Biscuits 1.25 Litres Vanilla Ice-Cream, Softened 1 Cup Vanilla Custard 1 Cup Mini Marshmallows 1/4 Cup Desiccated Coconut 1/4 Cup Granulated Nuts 1 Cup Frozen Raspberries, Roughly Crushed Chocolate Ice Magic, Sprinkles + Silver Cachous, to Decorate Vanilla Custard, to Serve

Line an 8 cup-capacity metal pudding steamer with plastic wrap, allowing a 2cm overhang.

Break 10 biscuits into 2cm pieces. Combine ice-cream, biscuit pieces, custard, marshmallows, coconut, nuts and raspberries in a bowl. Spoon mixture into prepared steamer. Smooth top. Top with remaining biscuits. Freeze overnight or until firm.

Stand pudding at room temperature for 5 minutes to soften. Turn out onto a plate. Carefully peel away wrap. Drizzle with Ice Magic.

Top with sprinkles and cachous. Serve with custard.

Christmas Grief Having holidays without your loved one is tough. For some people the first Christmas is the most difficult but for others it’s a blur because the death occurred toward the end of the year, so the second Christmas becomes difficult instead.

My mum died on Christmas Day 2015. I vividly remember getting the call from the doctor telling me that Mum had died, I remember ringing my brothers and sisters to let them know and then we all went on with our day. We were with family and it felt surreal at the time.

This whole year has been hard (as grieving is). This year I’ve felt vulnerable. The thought that hits me hard sometimes is that I’m now the eldest daughter of three generations of eldest daughters not 4 anymore. I’ve also thought about my own mortality.

Christmas is tough because you thought you’d be more

together than you are. If you’re finding the second Christmas more difficult than the first, it’s normal. The first year you might have cut out seeing some of your friends or skipped celebrations because you were too sad and friends understood last year but this year everyone expects you to be back on board as usual.

Last year people probably cut you some slack, they understood that the grief was fresh and you wouldn’t be yourself.

If you’re finding Christmas celebrations difficult this year (or any other year), be kind to yourself. Let people know how you’re feeling and get their support.

Be kind to yourself by letting people know what you do and don’t want to do.

Feel what you need to feel and don’t be governed by others.

Animal Protein – Does It Cause Or Help Osteoporosis??

OK so let’s look at one of the most misunderstood nutrients when it comes to osteoporosis - protein. There is a lot of misleading literature that suggests that excess protein consumption – especially animal protein - can be a cause of osteoporosis, by increasing calcium loss via the urine. But let’s take a look at what well done science tells about protein’s effect on bone (including animal protein).

Protein makes up 50% of bone volume, 1/3 of its mass. It forms a network throughout bone around which calcium crystalizes. This network is continually broken down and rebuilt, but to rebuild it, the body needs protein from the diet. So dietary (animal) protein intake from real food: o Increases urinary calcium excretion, but o Increases intestinal calcium absorption o Does not result in net reduction in calcium balance o Has a direct anabolic effect on bone (independent of calorie intake) which helps build bone (by) o Increasing production of a bone building hormone called IGF-1 (that) o The drives formation of the structural matrix of bone Note: A net calcium loss from the body is observed when purified proteins or amino acids are taken in isolation as in body building supplements for example, but this does not happen with protein in whole food form, from animal or plant

sources. Clinical studies do not support that animal proteins are detrimental to bone health, or that vegetable proteins are better for bone health. Indeed, some (but not all) studies show animal protein is associated with increased IGF, mineralization, and fewer fractures.

This doesn’t give all those meat-o-philes the green light to avoid there veges though!! Vegetables in the diet beneficially effect bone health, indeed bone loss observed statistically in populations with increased meat consumption may actually be more a reflection of inadequate vegetable intake.

Importantly, protein intakes that are too low (< 50g per day = ½ a salmon fillet, for a 60kg adult) actually cause reduced intestinal Ca absorption, plus increased parathyroid hormone which then causes leaching of calcium from bone.

If you have read my other articles on osteoporosis, you will be getting the picture that building and maintaining strong bones depends on many factors. A balanced, highly varied, nutrientrich whole food diet that â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;includes enough proteinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; is key. So whether from animal or plant sources, complete protein will help the body build and keep bones strong. Protein from organic grass fed animalsâ&#x20AC;Ś especially nutrient-rich organ meats, muscle meats, or wild caught fish, oysters & other sea foods is best; or a carefully combined mix of organic pulses and whole-grains is required if you are a vegetarian.

Decorations and Wrappings - Risk for intestinal obstruction (linear foreign body) or strangulation.
