Brett Bags a Win In #BraggingRights Competition Thousands of locals shared their love of Penrith on social media recently as part of Council’s #BraggingRights competition.

Their favourite places, things to do, cafes, restaurants and locations were showcased in photos and videos posted to Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

The natural beauty of the Nepean River and recreational activities at the Sydney International Regatta Centre featured in many posts, while Penrith’s great food experiences and worldclass attractions were also captured in fun and imaginative ways.

Grand prize winner Brett Pascoe, a forklift driver from Emu Plains, said he was thrilled his photo of Victoria Bridge was selected as the winning post.

“Photography is a hobby that I would love to turn into my profession. It’s something I’m passionate about and it’s nice to be recognised for this. I’ll definitely make good use of my new drone!” he said.

Penrith Mayor John Thain said the competition has brought out the very best of Penrith.

Ever feel like getting away from it all? Need a quiet place to relax, slow down and just listen to yourself think? Luckily for us, a beautiful slice of serenity lies in our midst, The Nepean Gorge.

And, one of the best ways to experience it is by paddling up The Nepean River.

Kayaking and canoeing has become very popular among all age groups along the river because of the calm waters, stunning scenery and plentiful wildlife. Ben Hankinson, owner of Horizon Line Canoes in Emu Plains, says they see a wide range of people including school kids, adults, grandparents with their grandchildren, groups, individuals, locals, Sydney siders from the eastern suburbs and internationals.

“All our staff are paddlers, and we love nothing better than chatting to other paddlers or first timers about our sport” said Ben. Boats and gear can be purchased or hired, depending on needs. For a half or full day paddle, he recommends starting about 3km South of the M4, which he refers to as an ‘Out and Back’ trip, because access further upstream is limited. “For people chasing a quick paddle”, he added, “the section adjacent to Penrith is still very nice”.

Alison Fletcher has been regularly kayaking the Nepean River for about two years. She started going along to the Saturday morning social group to learn how to kayak and get to know the river. “There’s always lots of wildlife” said Fletcher. “Sea eagles, azure kingfishers, water dragons, lyrebirds and turtles to name a few”.

She enjoys stopping to take photos, explore caves or have a bite of lunch. Her favourite spot is the junction with Erskine Creek, 13km up the river from Emu Plains. “The water is crystal clear and has a beautiful swimming hole and sandy beach” said Alison, “very peaceful. Feels like you are miles from anywhere!”

More Than Meets The Eye Isn’t it lovely to have a herd of cows back in the fields along Old Bathurst Road!

Cows are the kind of animal we all assume that we understand perfectly – but apparently there’s more going on than meets the eye. Some researchers in the early 2000s discovered that cows love to all stand in the same north-south direction while they eat. And not just some cows, but all cows, in every corner of the globe. We’re not sure why, we’re not even sure how, but study after study has shown that it’s true!

Sometimes you can think you understand something, but it turns out that things aren’t as simple as you thought. That there’s more than meets the eye. And I wonder if the same is sometimes true for Christianity and Christians. It’s easy to look at Christians and think that you know all there is to know. Maybe you don’t think much of Christians because you’ve had some bad experiences. Maybe you’re convinced that Christians are just backwards, anti progress and anti science and anti fun. And I’m sure that there are some Christians out there who, sadly, fit those descriptions.

But if that’s all you know of Christians, then you’re missing the bigger pieces of the picture. Like with cows, there’s definitely more than meets the eye! Here’s how I’d describe a Christian.

Take an ordinary person. Give them a real solid hope that God’s got their future looked after thanks to Jesus. Give them a desire

to share that hope with the people around them, because it’s just so good. Give them a passion to honour God by listening to him and loving people. And boom! You’ve got yourself a Christian.

Still ordinary. Still flawed. Still prone to doing the wrong thing.

But NOW knowing that, thanks to Jesus, it’s all going to be ok.

That’s who a Christian is.

The Westies Markets - WOW! The Westies Markets were held for the first time in Emu Plains last month, with the local community showing up in big numbers to embrace this wonderful monthly event.

There was lots of delicious food, arts and crafts, homewares and entertainment on hand, set in the picturesque leafy grounds of Nepean Creative and Performing Arts High School.

“We're still processing how awesome the launch was. Thank you for spending your Sunday with us and supporting our local makers and creators! It was a beautiful day. Make sure you mark the third Sunday of the month as market day. The next one is August 20th. See you there” said Katrina James from The Westies Markets.

Local Mothers Love MOPS many things she enjoys about the group is “getting to know women from the community and meeting their little ones.” Lis would love to extend an invitation to all local mothers with a child or children aged 0-6 years to come along and be part of this amazing group. Emu Plains Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) has been connecting mothers in our community for over five years.

Organised by Emu Plains Baptist Church, MOPS started off in Lapstone Scout Hall with just a few attendees. It has now grown to a group of ten mothers who meet fortnightly to connect, share and explore.

MOPS is primarily designed to support mothers with children aged 0-6 years. The mother’s program includes a quick game, a talk or a video on a particular topic, and a fun creative activity.

To enable the mothers to be free to participate, the MOPS team offer a separate program for the children called Moppets. The Moppets are lovingly cared for on the premises and have the opportunity to play games, dance to music, participate in craft and play together whilst their mothers chat with each other and have some timeout.

It is equally important for the development of healthy selfesteem that children learn how to deal with disappointment.

As a reaction to not getting what they want, such as being chosen for a team, children may sometimes put themselves down, saying things like: “I’m dumb”, “you hate me” or “I’m just stupid”. If this happens, try to avoid being too sympathetic.

Instead encourage your child to try again after the set-back and to enjoy the activity or game even if they aren’t the winner.

Rather than simply reassuring your child that everything will be okay, you can help your child develop their own sense of worth by letting them know that you understand their feelings of disappointment and that you are there to help them work out a reasonable way of dealing with that disappointment.

Remember too, when you’re helping your child with an activity or with homework concentrate on effort not results.

Praising your child for trying and making an improvement will motivate them to continue trying at a difficult task.

Is My Child Ready for School?

The pressure to give your child the best educational start in life leaves many families stressed and fearful of making the wrong decision. How do you know if he/she is ready? What should they know before they start? Should you send them when they are 5 or 6?

In New South Wales, the law states that a child must be enrolled in school by the age of 6. This means that you may send your child if they are turning 5 on or before July 31st (for Public Schools - the suggested cut-off date varies in Independent and Catholic). Children should attend school from the beginning of the year if they are already 5, turning 6 that year.

Despite the plethora of opinions about the ‘correct’ time to send a child to school, it is ultimately the decision of the parents to do what they believe is best. As each child is unique, it is important to consider a number of factors when making your decision.

Here are some basic questions you may like to answer to assist in making an informed decision: 1. Can your child listen attentively and follow instructions?

2. Is your child able to go to the toilet, wash hands and open food packets independently?

3. Can your child concentrate on a task and complete it?

4. Does your child express thoughts, feelings and ideas?

5. Is your child able to use a pencil to draw circles, lines, scribbles and letters?

6. Will your child share with others and take turns?

Along with your responses to these questions, it is important to consider your child’s emotional maturity, social awareness and additional needs before making a decision.

Remember - the greatest preparation for school is talking with your child about it. Let them know that you think school and learning are important. Children develop positive attitudes toward school when they see that their parents and families value education.

Juniors in the Swing at Leonay

Leonay Golf Club Head Professional Ben Breckenridge ran his first Junior Clinic during the second week of the July school holidays and there were positive signs for the future of golf in the district.

Twenty one children attended the Under 12 segment on the first day of the Junior Clinic, with six attending the Over 12 segment.

The next day saw quite a few new faces at the Clinic, with thirteen players aged Under 12 and once again six Over 12's attending.

Breckenridge was pleased with the strong turn-out, stating "The Junior Clinic was a great success".

"All of the kids appeared to have a great time and lots of the kids showed some real potential, so with a bit of luck they will be back for more".

Leonay Golf Club Committee Member Les Knox said "The Leonay Golf Club Junior Development Committee was very pleased with the number of juniors that attended the clinics over the two days, with the morning sessions for under 12's being booked out on both days".

"Many of the juniors showed a high degree of enthusiasm and an ability to grasp the art of playing golf" said Knox.

"Special mention must go to the Sponsors of Junior Golf at Leonay, the Tattersall's Centre at Penrith". Knox also said "With this sponsorship, there are many more plans ahead for Junior Golfers at Leonay".

He also singled out Breckenridge and one of the Club's leading A-Grade male players Simon Masters, who has just returned from College in the US, for their efforts. Trade Training Centre Students Scoop Awards

Help Provide a Safe Home For Life Uniting Burnside is looking for people who can provide a safe, nurturing home for children who are unable to remain with their families. You will be assessed and trained as foster carers to care for children in a range of options.

McCarthy Catholic College Year 12 student Mark Doughty beamed when he was awarded the NSW Western Region School Based Apprentice/Trainee 2017. This prestigious NSW Training Award was won from over 100 nominees. Mark is completing a Certificate III in Horticulture – Parks and Gardens.

“My hairs stood up end to end, heart thumped and my adrenalin was pumping”, joked Mark after the event. “I couldn’t believe I had won!” Mark is an apprentice with Skyline Landscaping Services, an Australian profile firm, with over 1,200 employees. Mark plans to further his workplace preparation with training in landscaping, garden design, construction and green keeping.

Kiera Kruger, also a McCarthy Catholic College Year 12 student, was one of only four finalists in the same School Based Apprentice/Traineeship category. Kiera is completing a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care. She has a passion for helping young children learn and develop. Kiera’s ‘magic moments’ are when she “makes a connection with a special little child”.

Kiera’s reaction to being a finalist? “I was just thrilled. I couldn’t believe it!” Kiera is a trainee with Little Triumph Early Education Centre in South Penrith. She plans to further her education with a TAFE Certificate in Child Care and a WSU Bachelor of Education – Infants. Kiera is intent of completing a drug and alcohol-affected babies course. “I want to learn how to help and care for all little children” she said.

New Business for Emu Heights

Local business OccFit Physiotherapy has gone from strength to strength, initially beginning as a mobile business in 2014, before opening their new clinic in Emu Heights earlier this year.

This has now allowed them to have a more focused role within the community.

Potassium - The Hidden & Maybe The Most Important Bone Protector Potassium is one of the most important bone building nutrients we can eat!! We’ve known since the early 1950s that deficiency in potassium results in reduced bone calcification in animals. Yet this nutrient is rarely talked about in relation to osteoporosis! There is a direct relationship between the rate of bone mineralisation & the level of potassium in chick cranial bones. If more mineralisation needs to occur more potassium is needed and visa-versa. Indeed, feeding small amounts of ammonium to rats (yes, the cleaning fluid) which blocks uptake of potassium in the intestines causes rats to lose bone, while feeding potassium (bicarbonate) to the same rats stimulates bone formation and even prevents osteoporosis when these rats are fed low calcium diets. Potassium seems to help control the deposition of phosphate in bone and in this way, promotes bone calcification somewhat independently of calcium intake.

In humans supplementing potassium daily: 1. does not change intestinal calcium absorption, but rather 2. decreases bone resorption 3. increases bone formation and 4. significantly reduces calcium loss in urine helping the body retain calcium.

Several studies show high potassium diets protect against osteoporosis. Tucker et al. showed that men and women in the highest quartile of potassium intake (about 3494–3999 mg/ day), had significantly greater hip-bone density compared with men and women in lower quartiles.

In another study of 266 elderly women, subjects in the highest quartile of urinary potassium excretion (a marker that reflects potassium intake) had significantly higher total hip bone density after 1 year (5%) and 5 years (6%), and significantly higher total body bone density (4%) bone density in distal tibia total (7%) and trabecular (11%) bone densities at 5 years than those in the lowest quartile.

Potassium intake levels in the modern world are a real problem.

Dietary patterns have changed so much that westerners have seen a 400% decrease in potassium intake (and a 400% increase in sodium intake – see next month). The displacement of vegetables & fruit by grain products, milk & meat is the fundamental problem. In the US, 10% of men and less that 1% of women consume sufficient potassium daily. Australian’s have similar dietary patterns. Australian men eat about 2800-3200 mg, women 2600-2900 mg potassium daily. The Australian NHMRC recommends 4700mg per day to avoid chronic disease.

In paleolithic times people received between 7000-10500mg per day. You can see why we might have a problem.

So where do you get it? Yes, that’s right you need to eat a large amount & variety of vegetables (especially green leafy veges), potatoes, nuts, seeds, legumes fish & fruit daily. 10 servings of veges if possible. Aussies tend to have cereal & milk for breaky, a sandwich or wrap for lunch and meat rice or pasta for dinner but not with enough veges! Potassium supplementation is not the answer – and could be dangerous for certain medical conditions. Let’s take a look at the potassium content of some different foods. You can see that the foods we eat most of are generally lower in potassium.

RSPCA Cupcake Week in August 2017 A Cupcake Day is a great way to raise awareness and money for the RSPCA. We are hosting a Cupcake Week at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital from Monday 21st to Friday 25th August 2017 between 9am-7pm.

Pop in to enjoy a cupcake (or two!) and even a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;pupcakeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; for your beloved pet. We have made â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;pupcakesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; which are dog friendly and do not contain any chocolate which is toxic to dogs.

The RSPCA is the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a non-profit, community based charity that works to prevent cruelty to animals by actively promoting their care and protection.

The RSPCA is not an agency of the Australian Government and therefore relies on the generosity of the community â&#x20AC;&#x201C; through animal adoptions, volunteering, event participation, donations, fundraising, corporate partnerships, corporate support, bequests and grants â&#x20AC;&#x201C; to support its vital daily work.

PupCake Recipe This special treat for your pups are sure to get the tail wagging!

Remember to serve up these doggy cupcakes in moderation because we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want your poodle addicted to strudel!

Makes 12-14 pupcakes.

Ingredients 2ž cups water

Ÿ cup unsweetened apple sauce Ÿ teaspoon vanilla 4 cups wholemeal flour 1 cup dried apple pieces (you can also use fresh fruit) 1 tablespoon baking powder 1 cage-free egg, beaten slightly 4 tablespoons honey Directions 1. Preheat oven to 175°C. Spray a cupcake tin with cooking spray.

2. Mix all wet ingredients thoroughly and combine dry ingredients in a separate bowl.

3. Slowly add wet ingredients to dry ingredients, scraping well to make sure no dry mixture is left.

4. Pour the mixture into the cupcake tin.

5. Bake for 30 minutes. Insert a toothpick into the centre of a pupcake and if it comes out dry, they are ready to come out of the oven.

6. Wait until cooled to serve.

7. Store in a sealed container.

How To Help Kids Understand the Death of a Loved One Death is difficult to understand but especially tough for kids. They often ask, “When am I going to see…?”

“Can we visit…?” or “Where is…?” These questions make it uncomfortable for adults.

1. It’s best to be honest in what you tell them. It’s important to be direct with the information of the death. Be mindful of the child’s age and development when choosing what details to share. Keep it simple.

2. Let the children grieve in their own way. Keep the lines of communication open. If they ask the same questions repeatedly, answer them as if it was the first time you heard it. They’re trying to make sense of what has happened.

It’s crucial to give them the opportunity to express their emotions.

3. Children love to help, so include them in the final goodbye.

Children love being creative. You can help children make a gift, draw a picture, write a letter or make a card. This is an opportune time to discuss what happens when you die.

4. Remember there is no right way to grieve. Children may resort to their imagination i.e. having an imaginary friend, having the person who died be in their play etc. this helps the child feel safe and allows them to make sense of what has happened.

5. The best way to support your child/children is to listen to them without judgment and encourage them to grieve.

Reassure them that you will always be there to support

them.

Sometimes there are no words for the pain that you’re feeling, only tears and that’s okay. Let them know that grief is a normal response to what has happened. Tell them that everyone who knew that person will be sad too and that’s all right.

Well Winter, is nearly behind us.

Despite the icy cold mornings and chilly evenings, the days have been surprisingly pleasant. As I write this, I notice the weatherman has forecast 7 days of sunshine. You know Spring is around the corner when the sun is peeking through the frost.
