Emu Plains Lions Shine for Brave Bella!

Bella Osbourne is 9-years old and suffers from autism and a debilitating and rare condition which can cause her to have continuous epilepsy. Bella is constantly required to attend treatment at Westmead Children’s Hospital and as the family doesn’t have a car, they need to travel by taxi, bus and public transport. There was a need for a wheelchair or stroller, to assist with the travel.

Emu Plains Lions stepped in to provide a Convaid Rodeo stroller, sourced from Dejay Medical and Scientific P/L at Seven Hills, an NDIS approved supplier, at a cost of just over $5,000. The funding has been jointly provided by the Emu Plains Club and the Australian Lions Foundation; the ALF being set up to provide financial assistance in times of need, just like in Bella’s case.

Anzac Nurses

On Anzac Day each year, we honour and remember the brave soldiers who have fought and sometimes lost their lives to ensure the freedoms that the rest of us often take for granted.

One of the least known of all Army services is the Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps (RAANC), who have supplied much needed care for Australian servicemen both during and after wars.

The history of the RAANC dates back to the formation of the Australian Army Nursing Service (AANS) in 1898, which originally consisted of one Lady Superintendent and 24 nurses. Their first overseas deployment was to Africa during the Boer War. They also served in Burma, India, The Persian Gulf, Egypt, Greece, Italy, France and England.

They worked in some very challenging times and often horrendous conditions, trying to save lives and heal limbs, hearts and spirits without running water, electricity and adequate supplies including equipment, medicine, antibiotics and anaesthesia. In WW1, a one thousand bed hospital in Cairo, completely made of tenting without a floor covering, was staffed only by 1 Matron, 15 Sisters and 30 Staff Nurses with male medical orderlies from the Australian Army Medical Corps. Unfathomable.

During WWI, more than 3,000 Australian civilian nurses volunteered for active service. 2,286 nurses served overseas, 423 served in Australia, 25 died on active service and 388 were decorated with seven Military Medals awarded to Australian Nurses for their courage under fire.

In WWII, 3,477 joined the AANS, 71 of whom lost their lives and 38 became prisoners of war. There were 137 decorations, which included two George Medals in recognition of ‘acts of great bravery’.

In 1948, the service was renamed as the Royal Australian Army Nursing Service.

Thank You Rosemary One Saturday afternoon back in the year 2000, Rosemary Weaver’s phone rang. She answered it and said hello to a 17- year journey and a lifelong connection with the Nepean District Historical Society. She vividly remembers a friend on the other end of the line telling her how she should “get down to the Arms of Australia Inn Museum as there was a book launching and a special presentation of a bugle to the members and that I should film it, which I did, and never left!”

And the rest…well, it’s ‘history’ of course, in every sense of the word.

She started out as publicity officer and was responsible for all press publicity, writing and producing brochures, videoing special events and helping with exhibitions. In 2008, she became editor of the Chronicle and produced 107 issues over the years.

Her interest in history began when she first came to Australia in 1964 from the UK. “Australia’s European history is relatively short, so you can get a handle on it and it is more personal” she said. “I got very involved with the Blue Wave steering committee for the re-enactment of the crossing of the Blue Mountains by Blaxland, Lawson and Wentworth”.

She enjoyed getting together articles for the Chronicle about all sorts of things that the early settlers got up to, which she found very enlightening.

NDHS held a farewell luncheon in her honour at O’Donoghue’s Pub, where she was awarded a very well-earned Lifetime Membership! Everyone was of course very sad to say goodbye to her but are very grateful for all of her hard work and dedication over the years.

She is now happily ensconced in Ballina in the North Coast where the views remind her of the English Countryside. She has also recently joined the local historical society, Alstonville Plateau Historical Society, who run the Crawford House Museum which is owned by the Ballina Shire Council. Well, no surprise there. And, Ballina, you are very lucky to have her.

Living Water Cape Town is about to run out of water. It’s a city of four million people, but its dam is so low they’re talking about turning off the taps in a few months.

People will have to collect water from a water station each day and carry it home. The limit will be 25 litres – that’s 25 kilograms. Have you ever tried to carry 25 kilograms? And can you imagine that happening here in Sydney? Our city is really not so different from theirs. How would we live without such an essential service?

Water is so critical for life you need a reliable water supply. Our lives depend on it. And water is so critical for life, Jesus used it

to show a woman he met at a well one day how essential he is to life. She had come to do what you do at a well – collect water.

But when Jesus met her there, he used her need for water to help her see her need for him. Jesus said, ‘If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water’ (John 4:10).

You can read more about what happened in the book of John in the Bible (John 4:1-26).

The point is, there are some things that are essential to life.

Water is one of them. Jesus claimed that he and what he did at the first Easter was just as, if not more important.

$1.75 Million Of Cannabis Seized – Emu Plains Police have seized nearly 350 cannabis plants worth $1.75 million dollars from a home in Sydney’s west.

About 10.30am, (Tuesday 13 March 2018), police from the Penrith Proactive Crime Team attended a house in Hillcrest Road after receiving information about suspicious activity.

Police executed a search warrant and located a sophisticated hydroponic set up, including 349 cannabis plants, some of them over one metre tall.

Investigators estimate the crop has a street value of about $1.75 million.

No arrests have been made in relation to the warrant and inquiries continue.

Zucchini Pancakes With Bacon & Avocado

ingredients 150g (1 cup) self-raising flour 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1 egg 310ml (1 1/2 cups) buttermilk 1 (about 150g) zucchini, coarsely grated Extra Virgin Olive oil spray 3 rindless bacon rashers, excess fat trimmed 250g punnet cherry tomatoes, quartered 1 small avocado, halved, stone removed, peeled, sliced 1 cup fresh basil leaves 1/2 small red onion, cut into thin wedges 1 garlic clove, crushed 2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar preparation 1. Combine the flour and baking powder in a bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Make a well in the centre. Whisk in the egg and buttermilk until just combined. Add the zucchini and stir to combine.

2. Heat a large non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Spray with oil. Spoon one-quarter of the zucchini mixture into the pan. Tilt the pan to form a 13cm-diameter pancake. Reduce heat to medium-low. Cook for 3-4 minutes or until bubbles appear on the surface. Turn and cook for 3-4 minutes or until golden and cooked through. Transfer to a plate and cover with foil to keep warm. Repeat with the remaining zucchini mixture, reheating the pan between batches.

3. Meanwhile, heat a small non-stick frying pan over mediumhigh heat. Cook the bacon for 3-4 minutes each side or until crisp. Tear into large pieces. Combine the tomato, avocado, basil, onion, garlic and vinegar in a bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Serve the salad and bacon with the pancakes.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT Harry Karavias Photography Harry Karavias is a local Landscape Photographer and is the owner of Harry Karavias Photography.

Harry has been photographing landscapes since 2009. “My love for photography began back in 2004 while on a camping trip with my family. We drove along some of the most picturesque countryside boasting rolling green hills and flowers a plenty. Along the way I stopped and took a photo with my then point-and-shoot camera. What was produced by the camera blew me away!

A passion for photography was stirred in me that day” said Harry.

For years thereafter, he attended workshops and studied the art of photography. Photography has taken him to some amazing places. It has opened his eyes to look at things differently, taught him patience and to appreciate the beauty that surrounds us.

Harry has entered several competitions with his photos and has received awards for them. He has described it as ‘very rewarding’ when this happens.

He has a website that showcases all his photos and he prints and sells all his photos as limited-edition prints. “I also organise and run Photography Workshops on location in the beautiful Blue Mountains. What’s unique about my Workshops is that they are designed for complete beginners to amateurs and explained in simple to understand language, because I know how daunting it was when I first started learning the art” he explains.

Girls, It’s Time To Get Your Footy On! Emu Plains JRLFC is excited to be part of the all new girls rugby league competition in 2018.

The all girls competition will give girls the opportunity to play in U6, U8, U10 and U12’s age groups with these games being played at the same time and same ground every Sunday. This is in addition to the already established U14, U16, U18’s and Open Girls teams.

In 2018, Emu Plains JRLFC will field girls in the mixed teams from U6’s to U12’s, along with their all girls teams from U14s to U18s, and they hope to grow this into the future as girls rugby league continues to get bigger.

In March, they hosted a girl’s coaching session with Simaima Taufa and other women who played in the World Cup. Simaima is an International rugby league player who has played for the Jillaroos and represented Australia at the 2017 Women’s Rugby League World Cup. She also won the Dally M Female Player of the Year in 2017. Through their partnership with Mounties JRLFC, they are lucky enough to have Simaima as an inspiration for all the girls at Emu Plains JRLFC and look forward to further coaching sessions with her.

I’m seeing a lot of stroppy three-year-olds in my work at the moment.

Families are streaming in through the door with stroppy three-year-old in tow. Too many young children are ruling the roost! It’s the same story - aggression and anger from the child.

This is what I have learnt in over 20 years of working with families – when a child is aggressive it usually means that there are not enough limits and boundaries, and/or they are applied inconsistently. Kids want to feel safe. Limits and boundaries provide safety. When a child is angry and aggressive, they are asking you to set a limit on that behaviour – their behaviour is saying ‘you are the parent, I am the child and I need help’.

Parents don’t know what to do. They frequently don’t have a parenting plan for how to deal with behaviour. So they try many different things. They are inconsistent in their management of behaviour, their approach to the child, and between partners where there are two parents in the home.

Parents don’t want to smack their kids and that’s good. What do you teach your kids when you smack them? In order to resolve conflict, I have to hit to get what I want. That’s not the sort of kid I want at my place, no thanks.

So, the only other tool left in the tool kit is yelling. And that’s ineffective because kids tune you out, and they just learn to yell to try and get what they want.

The thing about setting limits and boundaries is that you don’t have to be mean. As Jane Nelson said “Where did we ever get the crazy idea that in order to make children do better, first we have to make them feel worse? Think of the last time you felt humiliated or treated unfairly. Did you feel like cooperating or doing better?”

Setting limits and boundaries is about being calm, consistent, immediate, and decisive. We choose consequences that are related to the mistaken behaviour and apply them consistently, immediately and decisively. We tell the child what to do (rather than what not to do). When they are making poor choices, we tell them what they are doing wrong and what to do instead.

When we give instructions, we get close, say their name, and touch them. We pay lots and lots of attention to when they are doing behaviours that we like because it encourages them to do more of that. And as I said last month, stop talking so much. Image | www.pexels.com

FIFA 18 is a great game for people who like soccer. It has all the famous soccer players in the whole entire world, like Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. You can choose any team to play against a team that’s in a different league, such as an English Premier league team versus a LaLiga team or an A-League team. In this edition the players can perform more skills and the graphics are so much better. You can buy it for Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Xbox One and Xbox OneS. I really like this game because I get to choose to play with and manage my favourite team. You can also go into single player mode and choose to be a goalkeeper or a player so you can get better at the game.

I give this game 5 out of 5 stars.

Positive Partnerships in Education It is often said that a child’s education starts at home, so why is it when our children go to school that we often feel we have relinquished all rights to input into their learning?

A positive and collaborative home-school relationship is pivotal in creating a supportive environment which encourages learning.

Over the years society has become more complicated and these relationships have all too often degenerated. Unfortunately, in many communities, educators and parents just do not seem to have enough time to get to know one another and establish relationships on behalf of the children. Sometimes parents feel discouraged from visiting classrooms and teachers rarely consult with families unless a child is in trouble. The result of this situation is a clear division of home and school with misunderstanding, uncertainty and a lack of mutual respect. This can ultimately lead to a vicious cycle of teachers blaming the parents and parents blaming the teachers which, of course, is a worst-case scenario but it highlights the idea that when parents and teachers are active partners in a child’s education there is more chance of success.

So how do we produce a strong home-school connection that will set the stage for a child who will grow up with a love for learning? The resounding answer is clear and authentic communication. The problem, however, is that it needs to occur from both ends to be most effective. Families need to be interested, invested, available and realistic. They need to ensure they speak positively about the school, show how they value education and be willing to accept suggestions and praise. Teachers need to be approachable, open-minded, considerate and available. They must ensure they take the time to get to know the students and share their observations and understanding with families whilst showing respect and involving families in the child’s learning process. Helen Owen, Bella’s Mum said, “It’s all about how thankful we are for the support and help from the Lions Club, and Bella’s new purple coloured chair, in addition to raising awareness of rare diseases and epilepsy. We are so thankful�.

When Bella was first diagnosed with PCDH19 Epilepsy, she was one of only 11 in the world. That number soon grew to 15 and, over the years as awareness has grown, there are now over 150 documented cases worldwide. As research and awareness continues to grow, the number of affected individuals is estimated to dramatically jump much higher.

There is no cure for Bella and it is likely there will not be in her lifetime but, there is hope that one day there may be a cure or treatment to help children and families in the future.

Lions haven’t just donated the stroller and left Helen and Bella. Emu Plains Lions President, Alan Cooper, says “We have asked MP Emma Husar to assist in resolving NDIS issues to get support for the family with transport and help at home. Meanwhile, we are doing ‘little things’ like providing home cooked meals for the family, including a teenage sister, that can be frozen and used on days where constant care for Bella overrides the ability to do something as normal as cook dinner�.

Inflammation – Many People Have It But What Is It? Many patients who visit the clinic have inflammation & therefore pain. Often, they’re taking a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) to manage symptoms. Examples include: • ibuprofen - Nurofen, Advil and Bugesic. • diclofenac –Voltaren, Dinac and Fenac. • naproxen –Naprosyn, Naprogesic, Aleve. • celecoxib – Celebrex.

Using these drugs to alleviate inflammatory pain short term (a few days) is appropriate. For long term pain relief however, these drugs seem to be ineffective (which may be why patients are seeking help). Indeed, long term intake may produce negative effects.

First, let’s look at what inflammation is & how it causes pain.

Inflammation is a beautifully intricate protective mechanism, designed as the body’s response to tissue damage from physical / chemical trauma, or infection. It is a process with distinct stages.

At the microscopic level the first phase looks something like this: 1. Cells & tissues are damaged by something.

2. Damaged cells raise the alarm. They do this by releasing chemicals that tell surrounding cells that damage has occurred.

3. Surrounding normal & immune cells then release additional chemicals which: a. bring in immune cells from the blood stream and lymphatic vessels and b. stimulate bone marrow to make & release additional immune cells 4. All these immune cells hone in on the area of damage 5. There they release their own chemicals of alarm to really raise the stakes.

All these chemicals create a fever pitch of activity Immune cells release huge amounts of peroxide, and free radicals to kill any bugs, 8. Still other cells are activated clean dead & dying bugs, body-cells, and bits of tissue Some (but by no means all) of the chemical mediators released during this process include: a. Bradykinin b. Histamine c. Cytokines (protein hormones produced by tissues & immune system – eg Interleukin 1β & TNFa, substance P-for pain, etc) d. Bacterial fragments called endotoxins e. Oxygen free radicals f. Leukotrienes & Prostaglandins (fish-oil based hormones) At a macroscopic level it looks like this: • blood vessels widen & much warm, red blood flows to the damaged area • blood vessel become leaky and fluid flows from blood vessels into tissues • sensitivity of pain receptors greatly increases This produces the 4 ‘Cardinal Signs’ of inflammation: 1.

Calor (heat) 2.

Rubor (redness) 3.

Tumor (swelling from fluid retention) 4.

Dolor (pain) The chief concern for most people of course is the pain. It might be pain in the back, the knee, shoulder, it could be your toes, or elsewhere. That’s why patients go to their doctor or chemist and ask for help, and they are often given an NSAID. Next month we will look at what NSAIDS do to alleviate pain.

Chocolate Dangers at Easter Time We all know Easter is a fun time spent with family and chocolate... lots and lots of delicious chocolate! Easter is a great time for the human members of the family, but the infamous Easter egg hunt can end in tragedy for our four legged friends. Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which when ingested by a dog or cat, causes vomiting, diarrhoea, hyperactivity, increased heart rate, restlessness, muscle twitching, increased urination, excessive panting and if left untreated can be rapidly fatal.

If your dog does accidentally eat some chocolate it is vitally important that they are seen within 30 minutes to an hour by your local Veterinarian. The Veterinarian will give an injection to make your pet vomit, which removes most of the toxins from the body. Sometimes, your pet will be hospitalised, where intravenous fluids may be used, an enema or stomach pump

may be required, and we may also need to use muscle relaxants and activated charcoal. â&#x20AC;˘ Hide your Easter eggs in areas which cannot be accessed by your pet. â&#x20AC;˘ Ensure small children do not give your pet any chocolate. â&#x20AC;˘ Ensure all chocolate is kept out of reach from your pets.

Dogs have a good sense of smell and will find chocolate in kidâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s schoolbags! â&#x20AC;˘ Distract your pet with their favourite treats while chocolate is around.

Leonay GC Announces Masters Pennants Team Leonay Golf Club has arguably announced its strongest-ever Masters Pennants team, with several highly-credentialed A Grade players qualifying for the first time in the age bracket.

Led by one of the Club's highest-achieving players in captain Laurie Cupples, the Leonay team also includes seasoned Masters campaigners Gary Bennett, Ken Gordon, Peter McFarlane and John Kennedy.

The new faces in 2018 are Ian Barnes, Mark Cain, Peter Homan, Brett Evans and Peter Fowler.

The overall strength of the team is highlighted by the inclusion of Barnes and Cain, who are both currently members of the A Grade Pennants squad.

Leonay GC Committee members Peter Walker and Paul Latimer will undertake the Manager and Assistant Manager roles respectively for the team.

Leonay's opponents this year are Bardwell Valley, Lynwood and Macquarie Links, with the first round of games scheduled for Sunday 29th of April.
