Cattle To Continue As Part Of Emu Plains Future Cows are coming to Emu Plains Correctional Centre with 100 beef cattle due to arrive in the middle of this year as part of the Corrective Services Industries’ Paddock to Plate programs.

The Paddock to Plate program offers inmates diverse education, training and employment opportunities in primary food production, food processing and meal preparation.

Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith welcomed the decision to bring a cattle herd back to Emu Plains Correctional Centre following the decision not to proceed with an expansion last year.

“The return of a cattle herd to Emu Plains continues a long tradition of utilising agriculture as part of the rehabilitation of prisoners and I am pleased to see this continue into the future.”

“In 2007, I was invited to go to Jamison Park in Penrith to see the radio control aeroplanes fly. When I arrived, I was immediately awed by what I saw. Electric model aeroplanes flying around with very minimal sound, incredible speed, detailed models and all made from foam� said Renato Cantalupo, member of the Penrith Electric Model Aeroplane Club (PEMAC) based in Emu Heights.

Renato was immediately accepted by the great people that regularly met every Sunday. There was talk of forming a club, as they all knew that they couldn’t stay flying at Jamison Park forever. Mark Fenlon decided to approach Penrith Council and ask if they had a venue that they could fly at on a regular basis. Following some restrictions, they struck a deal with the Council. The Council gave Mark the only piece of ground they could think of, the old soccer fields on the corner of Russell Street and Palomino Road in Emu Plains.

Mark Fenlon invited around 20 people from Jamison Park to have a look at it. With his vision, he persuaded them and formed the Penrith Electric Model Aeroplane Club (PEMAC). It was sheer hard work and with no funds available to them, they soon began. They had to level the grounds, build a runway, fence the area and build a car park.

The club invited Stuart Ayers MP and members of the Penrith Council along, who encouraged them to apply for a grant. They received the grant and with this they built an awning for all the members and their guests to enjoy.

The club has been going for over 7 years, with over 150 members. They are open 7 days a week and open to anyone. If you would like to know more about the club, visit the website www.pemac.com.au. Angst Over Authority In 1993 newlyweds John and Debbie Ford went up to Byron Bay for their honeymoon. It’s a beautiful place where lots of people go scuba diving. They were no different. But it all went pear shaped. They’d nearly finished their dive when Debbie saw a dark shadow making a beeline right for her. It was a shark, a five metre great white. She was as good as dead. But John, only two weeks her husband, pushed her away and put himself between her and the shark. He died, so she could live.

As we celebrate Easter this month, you may be left wondering what all the fuss is about. But the story of John Ford’s sacrifice, as sad and at the same time as beautiful as it is, has it’s parallels.

What the Bible tells us is that we have experienced what Debbie experienced. Jesus died, so we could live. Like John, his was an act of love, a rescue mission, a costly sacrifice. But of course there are differences as well. While Debbie loved John, the extraordinary message of Easter is that Jesus died for people who didn’t love him, but who needed him just the same. The Bible puts it like this, ‘But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still his enemies, Christ died for us’ (Romans 5:8).

Now if he’d remained in the grave his life, his actions, his words, they would have been nothing memorable, in fact they would have been full of lies. But on the Sunday after he died the first witnesses saw him alive again, mission accomplished, God’s promises fulfilled. And the result? All who put their trust in him need not fear death, because through his death he has won life, eternal life with God.

Cattle To Continue As Part Of Emu Plains Future Commissioner Peter Severin said around 100 cows would pass through Emu Plains each year and be tended by minimum-security female inmates from the nearby correctional centre.

“I know that the people of Emu Plains and the Penrith area will be pleased to know that cows are returning to the paddock on Old Bathurst Road,” Mr Severin said.

“While we had to close the dairy last year, we didn’t realise that the cows would be sorely missed, so we’ve found a more viable alternative to use the farming land.”

The 100 beef cattle will be relocated from Mannus Correctional Centre, near Tumbarumba in the Riverina region of NSW. CSNSW continues to operate a milk processing facility on the site with raw milk supplied by external dairies and then pasteurised, homogenised and packaged on site, before being distributed to CSNSW inmates around the state.

Local Couple Recognised on National TV Show The husband-wife duo behind Cafe2U Emu Plains drove onto the small screen last month for the second season of Channel Seven's The Franchise Show.

Franchise partners Marina and David Rowe shared their story with viewers about the real-life journey to becoming your own boss and a small business owner, in a segment dedicated to the local mobile coffee van and women in business.

After a twenty-five year stunt in the New South Wales police force, Marina Rowe and her husband took to the road and decided to run their own small business and become a part of the Cafe2U family.

Five years on, producers behind The Franchise Show were drawn to the duo's motivation behind buying into the franchise network.

Feelings All feelings are OK. Some parents tell their children that strong emotions such as anger, frustration, excitement are unacceptable.

Even strong emotions are OK. They are normal and all of us will feel them at some time in the day or week. Strong emotions are quite motivating and energising. Think about how much can get done when people get angry about injustice (for example, Vincent Lingiari, Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Nelson Mandela).

So, all feelings are OK, but it is what we do with our emotions that matters. It is not OK to hurt someone else’s feelings or physically hurt others when we are angry.

It is also not OK to blame someone else for how we feel, for example “you make me feel angry”. You are having the emotion and taking responsibility for how you feel gives you the power to change it. Blame is a dead end street – it stops you from feeling that you can take the initiative to make changes.

So what else do kids need to know about feelings?

• You feel feelings in your body.

• You can tell how someone else is feeling by looking at their facial expression and body language, hearing what they say, watching what they do, and looking at the situation.

You can also ask them how they feel.

• Different people can have different feelings about the same thing. This can sometimes cause conflict, but it is important to understand that not everyone will think and feel the same as you. Even the best of friends will disagree.

• You can have two different feelings about the same situation. For example, you may be excited about moving to a new school, but worried too.

• Your feelings about something can change over time. This happens because over time you gain more knowledge, understanding, experience, and maturity.

• To understand others’ behaviour, you have to understand their perspective.

Our thoughts, feelings, and actions are linked. If we are thinking negative thoughts, it will lead to feeling sad, angry, or frustrated. These strong negative emotions will affect what we do, our actions. When we learn to understand the nature of our feelings, we gain a greater understanding of ourselves and others.

McCarthy Catholic College Cheerleaders Kayla Fenech and Mia Vanoostward recently became Winning Champions, as members of the Excite Cheerleading Junior Team, which competed and won at the Hawaiian Athletics Championships in Honolulu. Incredibly the girls also competed as members of the Senior Team and were placed second! The quality of the Excite teams was also recognised, with the Youth Team placing second as well.

Kayla and Mia have been with Excite for several years and train at the club’s centre in Glenmore Park. “Winning was so exciting, I cried”, admitted Kayla. “Winning at my age (14) just seemed incredible”, she added. Mia was also excited and repeated “Wow!” The Junior Excite Team competed against a large number of well experienced local Hawaiian and guest teams and the win was exceptional. Kerry Richardson, Principal Dance Teacher of Excite, congratulated the girls on their commitment to training and to perfect new routines. Kerry also praised the way the girls “came together to understand each other’s strengths, building each other up and their mutual encouragement”.

Both Kayla and Mia are already Grand Champions at the Australian Nationals. To achieve this goal, the Junior Excite Cheerleaders defeated hundreds of Australian teams. Excite Seniors and Youth are also National Champions. The girls are modest about their achievements and that of their fellow dancers. Kayla has career plans to be a scientist and to investigate space (with a wish to be an Australian astronaut!).

Mia is aiming towards a career as an exercise physiologist.

The way the girls have demonstrated their capacity to aim for cheerleading goals, there is every expectation they will achieve these career goals. Green Thumbs Compete For Top Prize The Greenest and Most Sustainable Garden competition is on as part of preparations for International Compost Awareness week coming up in May. Penrith Mayor Cr John Thain said Penrith Council is proud to be a major sponsor of the event.

“Our involvement in this initiative is part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability and securing the environmental future of our City,” Cr Thain said.

“It would be really wonderful to see locals getting involved, and who knows, maybe there’s a winner somewhere in Penrith,” he said.

The Pride of Emu Plains After a long hot Summer and a wet start to Autumn, the players and families at Emu Plains Glenmore Park Lions AFL Club are eager to get started on the 2017 season. Pre-season training started in January, with multiple opportunities to come down to Dukes Oval at Emu Plains to try out the sport.

The club is very excited to announce that from their membership base of 213 registered players (and still growing), they will be able to field 13 competitive teams between the Under 9’s and Under 17’s, including their Under 15 Youth Girls team that is growing from strength to strength. The club can also boast an Auskick membership of nearly 40 younger players.

Last month, all of the club members had the chance to meet and train with GWS Women’s player Renee Tomkins. They now look forward to special guest visits from their affiliated club ambassador, Callum Ward throughout the season.

The Club Launch event late last month officially started the season, with most teams participating in trial games against Canada Bay and Southwest Tigers before the first round. They were also excited about the GWS Club March at Spotless Stadium that weekend.

Their upcoming Annual Trivia Night Fundraiser will take place on May 5 at Melrose Hall in Emu Plains. Drug Induced Osteoporosis Many commonly prescribed medications contribute to significant bone loss and fractures, yet according to researchers at Oklahoma university, many physicians are unaware that ‘Drug-induced osteoporosis is a significant health problem. The problem is compounded because sicker & older people often take multiple medications, many of which induce bone loss.

Just taking extra calcium and vitamin D won’t really counteract this drug-induced bone loss. It just ‘ain’t that simple’. Bone undergoes continual turnover, i.e. it is continually broken down and rebuilt anew. At any-one-time about 5% of your bone is undergoing this carefully coordinated process. The process involves many different cell types. It’s controlled by many sensitive cell-cell chemical signals, including nutrients from the diet. Medications can interfere with this process, leading to bone resorption. So, which drugs can harm bone density? Let’s take a look.

Glucocorticoid medication e.g. prednisone taken longer term (>3 months, not necessarily consecutive), can lead to significant bone loss. As little as 3–10 mg prednisone is associated with fractures, with between 30–50% of patients developing these.

Antacid drugs called proton pump inhibitors used to treat acid reflux, heart burn & ulcers, with longer term use (several years), especially at higher doses, reduce absorption of calcium (Osteoporosis Canada 2017c) and many other nutrients important for bone strength. This increases hip fracture risk in older adults.

Aromatase inhibitors - breast cancer drugs, block estrogen production & significantly lower blood estrogen inducing bone loss, some studies showing increased risk of esp. vertebral & wrist fractures.

Antiandrogen therapy for prostate cancer reduces bone mineral density, more during the first year of therapy in men over

50, increasing fracture risk.

Longer-term injectable Depo-Provera use for contraception, significant reduces bone mineral density, partially reversible on discontinuation.

Excessive thyroid hormone replacement can also reduce bone mineral density and quality, & increase fractures.

Anti-seizure medications TegretolÂŽ (carbamazepine) and DilantinÂŽ (phenytoin) lower vitamin D & calcium absorption leading to low bone density.

Diuretics, for fluid retention and swelling caused by heart failure e.g. LasixÂŽ (furosemide), promote kidney calcium excretion & reduced hip bone density.

Aluminium-containing antacids for heartburn can inhibit phosphate absorption & reduce bone density. In patients with reduced kidney function, aluminium can inhibit bone mineralization Antirejection/immuosuppressive therapy such as cyclosporine (NeoralÂŽ) and tacrolimus (PrografÂŽ) used after organ transplant can increase bone loss.

Heparin a blood thinner - long-term use may reduce bone density.

Some cancer chemotherapy drugs can cause ovarian failure in women & premature menopause, or testicular failure & low testosterone in men, both lead to bone loss. Others include glucocorticoid therapy further increasing bone loss.

Antirejection drugs to prevent organ transplant rejection or autoimmune disorders are associated with bone loss and increased fracture risk, exact mechanisms not known.

Cadbury Egg Inspired Easter Trifle

Ingredients 12 Oreo Cookies 4 cups marshmallows (about 2/3 of a 16 ounce bag) 2 tablespoons water 1 (3.4 ounce) box French vanilla pudding 2 cups cold milk 6 ounces milk chocolate, chopped Method 1. Pour marshmallows into a large microwave safe bowl, drizzle water over top. Microwave for 1 minute. Remove and whisk to combine. Set aside.

2. In a large mixing bowl combine pudding mix and milk. Beat with whisk for 2 minutes. Place in refrigerator until ready to use.

3. Chop Oreo’s and add to the bottom of four trifle dishes. Chop chocolate and set aside. Add about ¼ cup marshmallow to trifle, over top of Oreo’s. Top marshmallow with pudding.

Add about ½ cup per dish. Sprinkle with chopped chocolate and finish with a dollop of marshmallow.

4. Serve and enjoy!

5. Cook’s note: If you would like some extra colour, add a few drops of yellow food colouring to your marshmallow and whip. Then top trifle with yellow marshmallow.

Method 1. Heat ½" oil in a sauce pan on medium heat.

2. In a large bowl mix together the chicken, cream cheese, sour cream, salsa, co-jack and spinach. Add salt and pepper to taste.

3. Once oil is hot enough (place hand over pan, above oil, to feel heat), add a few tablespoons of chicken/cream cheese mixture to the centre of a tortilla and spread out. Roll up and set seam side down in oil using tongs. Cook until golden brown on both sides.

4. Repeat until all the tortillas are filled, rolled and fried.

5. Set on paper towels to drain.

5 Self Care Tips for a Busy Life I work hard in and on my business and sometimes I don't realise how low my mood is. I have a fabulous support network who tells me when I've worked too much. The question they ask is, "Who have you said yes to that has taken you over the edge?"

Self care is anything you do to avoid any sort of mental or physical health problem, it is an essential part of our life. Taking care of yourself, mind, body and soul will keep you in peak condition to deal with stress. Putting â&#x20AC;&#x153;Me timeâ&#x20AC;? into your daily routine is often thought of as being selfish. The person who has a busy life is praised and looked up to and the one who is making time for self care is seen as being lazy.

Follow these tips for self-care and saying yes to yourself because you are number 1.

1. Good Nutrition: Eating a balanced diet helps our brain health. Make sure you eat plenty of fruit and veggies.

Research shows that you actually are what you eat and your mood is impacted, â&#x20AC;&#x153;good food, good moodâ&#x20AC;?.

2. Dance: Dancing also lifts your mood and keeps you physically fit. Join a dance class, learn new moves and make

new friends. Winning all round.

Swear: I was shocked to read that research shows that swearing can reduce physical pain and lift self esteem.

4. Read: Reading on a regular basis keeps your mind sharp.

Reading fiction helps creativity and generates a more open minded thinking.

5. Funny Animal Videos: Research shows that looking at something cute instantly elevates your mood. It also helps you be more productive at work. Watching funny cat videos while the boss isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t watching boosts productivity, yay!
