Margo Lewers - Artist and Local Resident On Monday 13 September at 11.00am Darani Lewers will be giving a talk on her mother’s life in Emu Plains at the Penrith Regional Gallery and Lewers Bequest. Margo Lewers was a distinguished 20th century artist who, together with her husband sculptor Gerald Lewers, developed and created their home at Emu Plains, now known as Penrith Regional Gallery and Lewers Bequest. The property was donated to Penrith Council by their daughters, Darani Lewers and Tanya Crothers in 1979. The NSW Heritage Council has nominated the Penrith Regional Gallery and Lewers Bequest to be placed on the State Heritage Register. Penrith Council is currently discussing this nomination. Historic Mortimer’s House Last month’s article on the Arms of Australia Inn revealed confusion over these two separate buildings. Mortimer’s House is to be found only a few doors away, having been home to the innkeeper, John Mortimer, and his family from the early 1840’s. The house features one of Australia’s earliest styles of architecture, sometimes referred to as Colonial Vernacular or Colonial Georgian. Joseph Barrow Montefiore, (after whom Montefiores village, Wellington, is named) first owned this property in 1832-1833, on-sold it to William H Mackenzie (1833 or 1834), who then sold it to Mortimer in the early 1840’s. It was surmised for many years that Mortimer had the house built, however this does not match the architecture which shows that it is highly likely that the front half was built around the early 1830’s (or earlier) and the other half added in Mortimer’s time. Recent discoveries, historical and physical, seem to support this. The house features ashlar stonework, which is in perfect condition, across the front of the building. It is built of solid 18 inch thick sandstone

likely from two different quarries, due to the two different times of the build. This home still stands solidly showcasing the beautiful polished, grey gum, wide-boarded timber floors, and unique but simple architecture. Several of the window panes have the original glass with its slight waviness and tiny creasing showing the rolled-glass techniques used in their day. Walking into the front rooms, seeing the floors, architecture, and swagged windows, one feels transported into another time. The flagstones across the front of the property are still in excellent condition, no doubt due to protection from the wide wrap-around verandah which also serves to keep the house naturally cool in the summer. One of the original fireplaces is still in use, but sadly the other was removed many decades ago. Slow combustion fireplaces now warm the home adding to its charm. There is also a hand-built well on the property which is over 10m deep, featuring brick lining for most of its depth. Over the years very few families have owned the house. For several decades the Gow family owned it, running a small business at the front. Many locals still recall buying their

sweets from Mrs Gow on their way to school. It has also been a butchery and a parsonage. More recent years have seen the current owners, of more than 20 years, removing unsympathetic features, lovingly restoring, renovating and rebuilding, thus bringing the entire house into a seamless blending of the old and new. These days it is a beautiful, large 5/6 bedroom family home, with large living areas, sitting graciously on spacious park-like acreage barely noticed by passers-by and in almost perfect silence from the busy world outside its gates. This remains one of the Penrith region’s best kept secrets and havens, well loved by all who come to take in another world that is slowly being forgotten, but nevertheless longed for.

Koori Cup Basketball Challenge On Friday 6 August 14 keen Aboriginal students from Nepean High School travelled to Penrith Sports Stadium to participate in the Koori Cup Basketball Challenge. The Koori Cup Basketball Challenge is an initiative held in conjunction with the Koori Cup Tobacco Project, which students completed at school. The aim is to broaden awareness of the prevalence, as well as the damaging effects of smoking among Aboriginal Australians. To be eligible to play in the Basketball Challenge, students designed a comic style information booklet about smoking which they titled “Smoking is for Buttheads”. The Koori Cup Basketball Challenge is a fun-filled community event that provides Aboriginal kids with the opportunity to mingle with other Aboriginal students in a friendly and positive atmosphere. They can be proud of their culture while participating as part of a team. Ten boys and four girls from Nepean High School were split into two teams, Junior and Intermediate and students played up to eight games throughout the day against teams of Aboriginal students from schools in

4

our region. Going into the day with a ‘nothing to lose’ attitude, students quickly realised they worked very well as a team. Playing to each other’s strengths, both Nepean teams were undefeated going into the Semi Finals. The Intermediate team bravely bowed out in extra time against Cranebrook while the Juniors progressed to the Grand Final against Kingswood. The Junior players showed not only great team work but also perseverance and spirit and won the Junior Koori Cup in the Grand Final against Cambridge Park. All Nepean Aboriginal students who participated also took out the award for Best Koori Cup Tobacco Projects, a highly commendable achievement. Well done!

Five Year Anniversary for Bank of Queensland in Penrith Anthony Walker is a proud local resident of Emu Plains and has lived here all his life. One of five children, he attended schools in the area and worked locally. Working in a major bank for 17 years prior to Bank of Queensland, Anthony has extensive experience and a good understanding of what a customer is looking for. “An Owner-Manager brings to a customer genuine sincerity when it comes to listening, understanding their needs, offering solutions and delivering them on time. We take accountability and own it, whatever the requirement is. I would like to put a sign on my office stating: ‘I’m Responsible! As an Owner-Manager I’m here for the long haul.” “The autonomy and independence attracted me to the BOQ Owner-Manager model. Having the flexibility to ‘make local decisions for local conditions’ really works for local people in our community here at Penrith. I love helping people and banking is what I know - combine these two things together and you have something unique and successful,” said Anthony. Anthony said he and his team were delighted to be able to provide personal service to the Penrith community and really believed the branch would continue to grow with the local economy. With the support of the local community, the bank has been able to deliver on its initial promise of an alternative to the big banks. If you would like to find out more about banking services offered by Bank of Queensland call in and speak to Anthony or one of his team. The Branch is located at 77 Station Street, Penrith, phone 4723 7650 or www.boq. com.au.

Political Achievement On Monday 2 August, Emu Plains Public School was represented by Kelsie Brodribb and Matt McAlpine in a “mock” council meeting held in the chambers of Penrith Council. There were fourteen primary students from various schools in the local area all learning about the formal part of council business. Sitting in the councillors actual

seats in the chamber, being mentored by actual councillors and using special microphones, they debated two items of business, the closure of a laneway and the expenditure of $1 million dollars of ratepayers money on cycle ways. The Emu Plains representatives acquitted themselves exceptionally well in the “mock” debate….even getting job offers when they get a bit older!! It was a great privilege and wonderful experience to be involved.

National School Tree Planting Day: Council’s bushland management trailer unveiled Penrith City had double celebrations for National School Tree Planting Day on Friday 30 July at Clissold Reserve, Emu Heights. Three hundred trees and shrubs were planted. As well, there was the launch of the bushland management trailer which has recently had a makeover. Penrith City Mayor Kevin Crameri OAM said: “Emu Heights Public School has been helping ‘green’ Clissold Reserve for the past five years. Over this time, they have improved the bushland edges with about 1,500 plants which create a buffer to the creek line vegetation. When grown, these will translate to taking up to 88 cars off the road permanently in carbon dioxide - CO2 - savings. “The school’s efforts have made a significant impact on the reserve. Those plants are thriving and the buffer is helping improve the biodiversity along the creek line by increasing the habitat area. The plants

also help reduce erosion,” said Mayor Crameri who was on site to help the students and pep them up with a short speech. “Council’s revamped bushland management trailer underscores the importance of this work to increase the biodiversity in Penrith City yet balance that with human development.” Councillor Crameri said: “The trailer is emblazoned with an important ‘call to action’: Community + Council = Conservation. It’s a powerful message that highlights community is central to Council’s conservation efforts. “You won’t miss the trailer – it’s been painted a vivid blue. It’s a key part of the bush regeneration team’s arsenal to fight weeds – they keep their tools in there!”
