Sound familiar? It’s the call of a spandex-clad cyclist barreling towards you from behind on a public trail that’s not so easy to share.
Whether you’re the cyclist or the runner, or the average pedestrian taking a stroll with your friends or family, there are unexpected obstacles to enjoying public outdoor spaces–especially if you take your pet.
If you want to get out on a hike with your favorite fourlegged friend, it can be tricky to dodge cyclists zooming by along with other foot traffic on the path.
Sometimes a sign pops up on a trailhead that tells you dogs aren’t allowed (we’re looking at you, Billy Goat Section A). Read on to see what local spots not only allow doggos but provide some off-leash fun.
1. Billy Goat Trail Sections B & C
Dogs are not allowed on Billy Goat Trail Section A (too dangerous), but Sections B and C are very dog-friendly. Section B is slightly more strenuous than Section C, so be cautious taking a less-than-athletic breed on your adventure.
#FrayLife Tip: It’s illegal to go off-leash in the park though many overlook this rule. Know your responsibility as a dog owner and be confident in your dog’s recall if you choose to take the risk.
2. Scott’s Run
This nature preserve just outside the Beltway in Fairfax County has very dog-friendly trails. The main attraction at Scott’s Run is its small waterfall, so bring a swimsuit! The waterfall is a popular spot for humans and dogs alike to cool off on a hot summer’s day.
#FrayLife Tip: The first parking lot you will come across only holds about a dozen cars. Drive past it a ways to the other lot for better odds at getting a spot.
3. Cabin John Regional Park Trails
Take your pup on Cabin John’s Stream Valley Trail totaling 8.8 miles and they will worship you till the cows come home. Why? Because there is an enormous and magical woodland dog park right off of it complete with a canine rock climbing area.
4. Hemlock Overlook Regional Park/Paradise Springs Winery
Take a drive just under an hour from the district to Clifton, Virginia, for a mild trail hike on one of the many trails at Hemlock Overlook Regional Park. Arguably the most exciting part of your adventure will be a stop at Paradise Springs Winery, a dog-friendly winery right across the main parking area at Hemlock!
#FrayLife Tip: Note that dogs are allowed anywhere on the property except inside the buildings and back patio of the main building. It might be a good idea to take another human with you to stay with your pup while you grab refills.
5. Palisades Trail Near Fort Bennett Park
If you’re one of our Virginia peeps, this trail will be your new best friend (and your doggo’s.) Palisades Trail in situated in Fort Bennett Park, which is over 11 acres in size with many designated areas your pup can run free.

Ranging from 8.1-mile hikes to a simple stroll from the parking lot, the DMV area and beyond offer a variety of gorgeous waterfalls to check out.
Don’t go chasing waterfalls — just kidding, you absolutely should. While this past week has had record high temperatures pretty much everywhere, we are slowly moving into cooler fall days. In just a blink of an eye, we will be wearing cardigans and sipping hot cider, but while the fall weather may feel like the perfect time to cozy up on the couch, it is peak time for hikes in the DMV area and beyond. Enjoy the crisp air, colorful fall leaves and the cherry on top — breathtaking waterfalls.
Celebrate fall a little further away from the city with a weekend away at Blackwater Falls State Park. Located in West Virginia, this park has multiple hikes and waterfalls in the surrounding area with varying difficulty levels. Blackwater Falls, the state park’s namesake, is a 57-foot waterfall that can be reached in just mere minutes from the parking area — the ideal spot for those who hate hikes.
1584 Blackwater Lodge Rd. Davis, WV; wvstateparks.com // @wvstateparks
Located in Maryland’s oldest state park, Cascade Falls is definitely a bucket list trip just outside of the District. While the hike to the falls isn’t too long, be
prepared to stop countless times along the way to take in the spectacular nature Patapsco Valley State Park has to offer.
8020 Baltimore National Pike, Ellicott City, MD; dnr.maryland.gov // @marylanddnr
For the risk takers and thrill seekers, Cedar Run’s Whiteoak circuit is a 8.1-mile round trip hike categorized as strenuous on the hiking difficulty scale. While you will definitely feel a little sore the next day, the cascades on this hike are unbeatable with more than six waterfalls throughout. nps.gov // @shenandoahnps

Coming in at a whopping 78 feet, Cunningham Falls in Thurmont, Maryland tops the chart as the biggest waterfall in the state. Depending on how big your hankering for hiking is, choose between this park’s countless trails including an easy 0.5-mile hike or a not-so-easy 7.5-mile hike.

If you are looking for tranquility, Falling Branch Falls, also known as the Kilgore Falls, is the spot for you. Join friends or go on a solo adventure as you hike this non-developed trail to Maryland’s second highest free-falling waterfall. Fear not if the everchanging weather returns to scorching heat: Bring your bathing suit and take a dip to cool off.

You know ‘em, you love ‘em — welcome to the stage, Great Falls. Seriously though, Great Falls is one of the most known, if not the most, spots to see top-tier cascades in the area. Choose between the Virginia side or the Maryland side, aka the superior side (that’s coming from a Marylander so totally not biased at all), and see all that these ‘great’ falls have to offer – pun intended. If you are looking for a little bit more of a hike, choose between the numerous trails on either side of the rapids.

Scott’s Run Nature Preserve
Run, don’t walk, to this popular hike and waterfall in McLean, Virginia. Just outside of the city, Scott’s Run is the perfect waterfall to visit for all of the last minute decision makers out there — it’s literally just off of the beltway and the hike is just about 2 miles there and back (or longer if you choose a different path).

Growing up in Utah, I had access to rivers all around me — the Bear, the Snake, the Green. Weekends involved packing up tubes and kayaks, driving through canyons and seeking optimal entry points near whitewater rapids. Moving East,
I found kayaking logistics tricky despite living close to the Potomac, a large and varied river that offers just as much fun as the ones I grew up with.
Here in D.C., you’ll see kayaks all over the Potomac, from the whitewater at Great Falls to the steady flow outside the Kennedy Center. But if, like me, you’re not quite sure where to start, we’ve got you covered. Whether you’re into a calm ride or ready to brave a few rapids, D.C. has plenty of options for beginners.
Jill Douglas, regional program coordinator for REI’s Mid-Atlantic region, suggests experimenting with what’s available before buying your own gear.
“Our kayak rental center is great,” Douglas says of REI’s new rental center in National Harbor. “We have sit-on tops, we have stand-up paddleboards. We have tours you can go on where you can actually see what it’s like to be on these boats.”
Driving over any bridge in D.C., you’ll most likely see people on open hard-top kayaks. But there are also kayaks with skirts (the stretchy fabric that prevents
water from entering the boat — useful for those who take on the largest of rapids), inflatable kayaks and origami kayaks that can be folded into a little box for easy storage. Each is used for a different type of river current.
While sections of the river vary, kayaking equipment and water rules remain constant. Life vests, hydration and sunblock are a must, and a dry bag will help you keep valuables safe and contained.
“What’s really key is a dry bag with air,” Douglas says. “You keep air in it so if you drop it, it floats instead of sinks.”
As for water rules? Be wary of your surroundings.
Look out for other watercraft in the Potomac — yachts and motorboats and tour boats — that create currents you should be prepared to take on. Check the weather before you head out, too; wind affects the resistance you’ll experience on routes and it’s not wise to be on the water during thunderstorms.
“It’s all tidal influence, right?” Douglas says. “The Potomac is in Chesapeake Bay. So, look for when there’s low tide and high tide and how that affects certain routes.”
Rivers ebb and flow, literally. The lower the water, the closer you are to rocks.
While out in higher current areas, watch for anything blocking your path that could either tip or rip your ride. Most of these safety concerns are covered in classes at REI and other kayak centers throughout D.C., like Calleva, Potomac Paddlesports and Canoe Cruisers Association.
As for day trips, Douglas recommends learning more about water trails in the area.
“You can canoe from lake to lake by creeks,” Douglas says. “If a creek is too low, you can throw the canoe on your shoulders and hike through the woods in the creek to get to the next lake. There are docks where you can set up tents along the way.”
Too hardcore for now? Check out Mallows Bay instead.
“It’s this graveyard of labor ships,” Douglas says. “It’s pretty neat to see and learn about the history of [how this whole area developed].”
Douglas also recommends the upper Potomac near Great Falls. You can use the canals to create a loop by riding some whitewater, then taking the calmer canal back to where you began.
“You can do overnight, you can sea kayak, you can day paddle or do some whitewater paddling right here in the city,” Douglas says. “I think that’s so amazing.”
Douglas has lived all over the country — from Alaska to Tennessee — and still finds places in D.C. that feel inspiring. She stumbled across a canal while paddling through Georgetown after moving here about a month ago.
“I’ve done that tour twice now, and I’m just in awe,” she says. “I don’t feel like I’m in D.C. when I paddle through that canal.”
No matter what area you want to explore — the calm, the canal, the creek, the crazy — Douglas says to just try it all. Experiment with different boats, utilize resources in the area and decide what recreational style is best for you.
“It doesn’t have to be pure athletics,” Douglas says. “You can just go out and go birdwatching. You can go camping or fishing. There’s a lot more to do than just paddle a lot of miles.”
