JULY 2023 FIFTH UPDATE
QUARTERLY UPDATE MULTIPLY

HELLO DISTRICT CHURCH,

As we seek to be a church for the city, I’ve been amazed at the ways God has allowed us to minister holistically. We just finished a 7 week series on forgiveness that helped our church grow in freedom from bitterness, resentment, and bondage. This year, our counseling ministry has been able to offer 500+ hours of benevolence counseling to those in our community, and beyond, regardless of ability to pay. We continue to meet the needs of people inside and outside of the church through our addiction recovery ministry.

And, the prayer team is bigger than ever, and continues to grow, as we seek to intercede and lift up people in our community. We’ve witnessed people healed from cancer, several have been delivered from the enemy’s attack on their lives, people have had their hearing restored, and God has opened doors where in the natural realm things seemed impossible.

In March 2023, we had 45 couples come together for a two day marriage retreat to enrich their marriage. Pastor Aaron and I, along with the amazing support of Taek Kim, our Director of Counseling and Care, facilitated conversations to help couples go deeper in their relationship. Many couples left the retreat with stronger, more intimate connections and others learned things about their spouse that they hadn’t really known before.

For the last 13 years, God has been on the move here in DC and God is still moving! I am so glad that I get to be a part of it with you! It is truly a joy and an honor for me to be a part of this community and to serve as one of your pastors. I’m excited to see how God will continue to bring His kingdom to fruition through The District Church and how He will transform lives in DC and beyond.

Rooted

Over 100 people have gone through Rooted. This discipleship experience helps you connect with God, church and purpose. We've seen people grow closer to God and to one another as they develop the rhythms of the experience. Our prayer is that everyone who calls The District Church home will go through It. New groups will start this September!

“I was brought back to the Lord after 2022 turned out to be the darkest year of my life. I was diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder Recurrent, but I didn’t want to believe it. Fast forward to Fall, I had accomplished my dream of starting law school. But about 3 weeks in, I had to stop and leave because I was experiencing the worst depressive episode of my life. I spent that remaining Fall trying to get better through therapy and antidepressants, but nothing seemed to work. I was floating out in space and felt more alone than I'd ever felt before. Then, on New Year’s Eve 2022, I suddenly remembered that my old church live-streams their special service; and so, I worshipped and praised the Lord for the first time in about 6 years. Then, New Year’s Day 2023, I gave my life to the Lord. Literally, a month and a half later, I got the approval to get off antidepressants! Plus I was approved to return to law school in Fall 2023! Getting baptized was my declaration that the Lord is my light, and with Him, I will never see the darkness of depression again! Getting baptized at The District Church was a warm experience, especially with my women’s small group cheering me on. As I rose anew, I was shaking with an overwhelming fire to learn more about my God and a hunger to serve others in whatever ways He calls me to.”

INTERPRETATION MINISTRY

Members of our Latino Affinity Group, led by Susana Marin and Carly Pappanastos, have been praying for ways to reach Spanish speakers in DC. From those prayers and collaboration, a new Interpretation Ministry was birthed!

"I had been asking God to provide opportunities for me to use my gifts and skills to foster the Kingdom of God where I live, so when I heard Susana mention in the Latino small group that there was a desire to open the church up to the Latinos of DC, I started praying about it and eventually told her I was interested in participating," said Carly. We have seen great fruit since we started the ministry on Easter Sunday. A family visiting for the first time came forward for prayer, and one rededicated their life to Christ.

We

hear a message in their

“I'm reminded of 2 Corinthians 4:15, "For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people, it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God,"

"The good gifts that God has given The District Church are now being shared more widely with the Latinos in our community at The District Church, and soon to be shared with the wider community of Latinos in DC. These shared gifts result in thanksgiving and praise, and God is glorified.” said Carly. Bilingual volunteers sit in the sound booth on Sunday with a transmitter and headset and interpret the service in Spanish live. Spanish speakers can pick up headphones at the sound booth to listen. Today they have 12 volunteers to interpret. Both Carly and Susana say tht this Is Important because there are few to no Spanish speaking churches in DC, yet there are many Latinos not only in the city but In North West DC, where

we worship every week. We hope that God will make this ministry a beacon of hope and joy that brings healing and life to the immigrants in our church and our city.

MULTIPLY OUR LOCATIONS

NORTH WEST DC

Praise God that we were able to renew our lease at CHEC for our Sunday space for another year! We continue to save for and actively look for our permanent Sunday space in DC, but we praise God for the great partnership at CHEC in the meantime.

DIGITAL

In addition to establishing The District Church communities in Virginia and Maryland, we are also working to enhance our digital presence and engagement, particularly in the DMV area. We aim to reach as many people as possible and help them become devoted followers of Christ who love, think and act like Him. We encourage you to follow us on our social media platforms; instagram, twitter, facebook (@districtchurch), and youtube (@thedistrictchurch.) Help us disciple others through these platforms!

PATHFINDERS

Several leaders who have gone through the Rooted experience will be participating in prayer and discerning the process involved in launching the different locations. These are our Pathfinders and the first meeting of these leaders will be happening in Northern Virginia this summer. If you feel called to be a part of the Pathfinders for our Virginia or Maryland locations please reach out to Pastor Kevin at kevin@districtchurch.org

MULTIPLY OUR GENEROSITY

GLOBAL PARTNERS

In June we had two of our global partners visit and preach for us. Pastor David Pothier of La Chapelle and Pastor Dieudonné of New Generation. Through your generosity we are able to help partner with La Chapelle in planting vibrant churches in French-speaking Canada, the most unchurched area of North America. We are also able to support New Generation that is investing in street children from Burundi, giving them a bright future in the poorest country in the world.

OUTREACH

In May 2023, Pastor Amy had the opportunity to take 22 people from our church to Israel/Palestine to experience the places where Jesus walked, taught and led. They also learned, with the help of one of our partners, Telos, what it means to be a peacemaker in the midst of perpetual conflict and trauma. With every person, perspective, and situation we encountered, they asked, “Where do you see Jesus here?” It was a powerful discipleship experience and Pastor Amy looks forward to taking more people on this trip in the future.

LOCAL PARTNER

Casa Chirilagua exists to develop relationships with families to see the Chirilagua neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia transformed by Christ. They seek to live incarnationally among their neighbors, positioning themselves to be the hands and feet of Jesus daily. The Monthly Family Dinner at Casa Chirilagua is a chance for families to enjoy one another while sharing a meal. It is a great way for the community to develop relationships! The District Church served dinner to over 100 families that are part of the community at Casa Chirilagua.
