April 2, 2021 Fellow Toastmasters in District 47, Welcome to the 2021 district conference: One Community Connect-Ed. As a result of the continuing global pandemic this conference is likely to be unlike any you have experienced before. The Conference Team has worked tirelessly to ensure that have the best experience possible. Throughout this conference you will have the opportunity immerse yourself in the various activities the conference team has assembled for you. Take time, when possible, to network with your fellow Toastmasters, make new friends, and build lasting relationships. I challenge each one of you to meet someone new and learn something about them.

The educational sessions will provide you with the opportunity to learn from others. You will gain new skills that you can use both in and out of Toastmasters. In addition to the educational sessions, you will hear from keynote speakers who will inspire and entertain you. Share what you learn with others, remember, knowledge is only worth something when you share it with others.

During the conference you will get to witness the thrill of competition! The best speakers in the district will take the virtual stage competing in various speech contests vying for the title of District Champion.

Who will be the leaders responsible for leading your district towards continued success in the upcoming year?

For developing the strategies and innovative programs to increase the reach of Toastmasters throughout the district and help members achieve their goals? During the annual business meeting the voting members will be responsible for electing these leaders, this is a tremendous responsibility. Meet with these leaders and get to know them prior to the business meeting and then select those who will best serve the members, the district, and Toastmasters International.

Use your conference experience to make an impact on others and continue to keep District 47 One Community Connect-Ed.

District 47 Toastmasters: It has been a whirlwind of a year for many of us, as we weathered the storm, both in our personal and professional lives, having to deal with extraordinary challenges the global pandemic has created. We were forced to adapt to a new way of life, showed our resilience to forged forward and continued on our personal development journey acquiring new skills along the way.

Our family of Toastmasters across the district unified through their clubs, collaborated with other members and successfully transitioning to online meeting while continuing to make it a fun learning environment for all.

Although some of your fellow Toastmasters were unable to continue on their journey due to personal priorities and circumstance, you showed your commitment to continue pursuing your communication and leadership goals. I applaud you for taking accountability for your personal development. Please stay in touch with the former club members and continue to be the motivation they need to pick up from where they left off on their quest for success.

The leaders of your district demonstrated exceptional courage and leadership over the past year and will be remembered as the only batch of leaders to lead a district fully online, working diligently to fulfill the district mission and keeping their members engaged.

This unique conference of One Community Connect-Ed is a result of their effortless work and planning to stay committed and connected. It promises to awake your inner fire and focus on the memories, challenges and successes during this Toastmasters term.

Congratulations to all of you in District 47 for staying the course, navigating the rough storm and remaining resilient through it all.

Dear District 47 Toastmasters, When people ask me for one take away from my year as Region Advisor, my answer is, that this year has proven to me that even though we are separated by our circumstances, we are connected by our passion and purpose. Your conference theme “One Community Connected-Ed” therefore resonates with me and underscores the importance of unity and collaboration despite our current circumstances.

In my home District, the Caribbean, we are 26 islands united by water and have no option but to bridge the distance between us by practicing excellence in communication and leadership. We are so used to not seeing each other more than twice or, in case of the Trio, four times a year and to depend on the possibilities of technology to be able to lead and engage with our fellow Toastmasters. It has been the skills developed from this experience, that has helped us to easily continue in the “new normal”.

The current circumstances have proven that our Toastmasters education has prepared us to effectively translate our skills into our new reality. Being able to stay connected as a community, in our communities is a vital skill and an urgent necessity. I invite you to make use of the opportunity offered to you through this conference experience. to connect with your fellow Toastmasters. Learn from their experiences, grow your network and keep sharing the passion that unites us as a community of communicators and leaders.

As I am coming to the end of my term as your Region Advisor, I want to thank you so much for allowing me the opportunity to learn from you. However, the program year is still not over. Stay connected with your members, Clubs and District. Stay focused on the higher level of excellence you have committed yourselves to achieve by the end of this year. Encourage others to join, to participate actively and experience how Toastmasters will change their lives.

Welcome to District 47’s first Four Day Virtual Annual Conference!

A special Congratulations and Thank You to the many toastmasters who gave their knowledge and support in the planning of this event. The theme of this conference, One Community Connect-Ed personifies the District’s 2020-2021 vision of the Culture of Community through education, community, and connection.

We knew this Toastmaster year would be one of recovery, reigniting the interest, reminding us of our why, and reaching out in adapting to the virtual change. With the District Mission to build new clubs and to support all clubs in achieving excellence, we have continued to focus on rebuilding the membership in our clubs, by making our clubs member-centric, enriching the club quality, delivering value to our members in an environment of respect and trust.

This year’s District Executive Team shared the promise to the District to be unified in one purpose to follow the District Mission, and to operate with these four principles - Commitment, Collaboration, Communication and Consistency with an intention of “Creating a Legacy Where Members Excel”.

We applaud all Toastmaster Leaders for showing the way, for elevating your member’s experience, for reaching out to the communities and extending the Toastmasters brand and benefits to our youth, to parents, to organizations. You have impacted so many lives in sharing your toastmaster gift! You are epic examples of servant leadership and together you have made this district and this organization better and stronger. My District 47 Family and Guests, I am overly excited to welcome you to District 47’s first – ever four-day virtual conference experience: One Community Connect-Ed. This conference promises to be one for the record books filled with educational sessions, fun, engaging sessions, an award-winning event App and accredited speakers from around the world and so much more.

Fellow Toastmasters there has been nothing normal about our Toastmasters journey this year and this conference will be no different. The Program Quality Team used every opportunity this year to bring you the best, most elevated training and the Conference Team spared no hours in planning various activities that I guarantee will leave you transformed once you immerse yourself fully this week.

To pull off such an extravagant affair required countless volunteers and so I embolden you to engage with the volunteers this week. Send them a thank-you note via chat or on the community board. They deserve it all!

Through sheer resilience and commitment to personal growth and development District 47 continues to thrive. We have done this together as one community, as one family. We are not clear from the challenges due to the global pandemic; however, as Toastmasters I know we have the skills necessary to provide exceptional support to each other and to strengthen our District. We have done this numerous times before and we can do this again.

Thank you for your partnership and commitment this year district 47. I know I join many in saying this Toastmasters program made me a better communicator and leader and for this I am eternally grateful. It has been an honor to serve as your Program Quality Director 2020 – 2021. Working together we educated, we elevated and we certainly did energize!

Welcome one and all to the District 47 Annual Conference, where we are One Community Connect-ED! This action-packed virtual conference has a little bit of everything and is a great way to connect with Toastmasters and persons from all over the world. We appreciate you being here and being a part of the fun.

The Toastmasters District mission is to build new clubs and support all clubs achieving excellence. The only way this can happen is if all of our members come together and achieve our respective and collective goals.

This year, in the midst of a pandemic, the members of District 47 have stepped up and answered the call. The Club Growth team would like to thank each and every one of you for your steadfast commitment to Toastmasters core values: integrity, respect, service, and excellence.

The Club Growth team has had the distinct pleasure of working intimately with members across the district, supporting with areas such as membership retention, membership extension, club retention, and club growth.

We have welcomed new clubs and new members this year, despite all of the obstacles. These clubs demonstrate that anything is possible when you put your mind to it. We have also welcomed back a slew of reinstated members that found a silver lining in the pandemic via virtual connectivity through Toastmasters.

Together we embody the benefits of this great organization.

Thank you for not yielding during these trying times and for re-instilling a sense of faith in humanity for so many out there. Whenever I have the opportunity to do so, I boast about how resilient District 47 is. I can say this as a benefactor of a decade-plus tenure of interacting with our members and leaders. When I joined the toastmasters' program in 1999 District 47 was a large distract which included clubs all over Florida. I remember attending my first conference in Cocoa Beach, and the significant impression that encounter left on me. I quickly learned from that experience toastmasters is not just a place that develops communicators and leaders, it is the place of family.

When I use the word family I do so understanding that our members are committed to helping each other grow and strive. They do it with care and smile on their face. I have witnessed the split of our district, the evolution of our members, and the growth of the district. We have weathered major hurricanes, internal and external conflicts, yet we remain resilient and encouraged.

We are now forced to navigate through the tumultuous seas of covid-19, which has impacted us individually and collectively. This year’s conference theme One Community Connect-Ed is fitting, as it speaks to the singular element that has made us resilient. Once we remember we are stronger together, we can and will accomplish much. Whether you live in South East Florida, the Bahamas, or elsewhere in the world regardless of our varying cultures we are all human beings.

This community of toastmasters provides a network of resources that has the potential to fan the flames of your destiny. Take full advantage of this opportunity and embark on the journey with an open mind and willingness to serve. While are not meeting physically to host our conference, this will be short-lived and before we know it we will be seeing each other in person real soon. I implore you take full advantage of the smorgasbord of activities planned for your enjoyment during this year’s conference. Please do catch up on old times with your fellow toastmasters’ friends and family. May we continue to defy the odds and blaze trails together, while we forever remain One Community Connect-Ed! In a world of so many uncertainties, one thing is certain; we remained “ONE COMMUNITY CONNECT-ED”. District 47 Communication Achievement Award The District vision for this toastmaster year was to reach out to our community around us – to the youth groups, to the churches, to the organizations who work with the youth and organize Youth Leadership Programs, to reach out to businesses and offer Speech Crafts for their employees’ benefit. To be involved with Junior Achievement, Rotary, and the Boys & Girls Clubs.

The Boys & Girls Club organization is dear to the toastmasters’ organization. Toastmasters across Palm Beach County have served as mentors for the Youth of the Year candidates over the past 7 years. This past year this mentorship expanded into St. Lucie County. We were introduced to Tommy John through this mentorship endeavor. It was apparent that he is a person dedicated to the youth and who should be a toastmaster as his listening skills were highly honed. In weekly sessions, his stellar communication skills were evident in his comments to Elyse, the 2021 Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County Youth of the Year. This may be his paid position, but he genuinely loves what he does. His experience with the Boys & Girls Clubs and his current role as Director of Community Outreach is a blessing to the Boys & Girls Club organization and to the many youth who have come under his mentorship.

Tommy John moved to Florida 6 years ago from the northern city of Chicago. He has 11 years of experience working with children, families, and building community partnerships. He currently works with the Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County, has worked with other Boys & Girls Club agencies, and as a licensed school teacher. In his former role as Director of Education and currently Director of Community Outreach, he is excited to help guide the development of the youth by implementing meaningful programs. One of the reasons he works with the youth is to provide them with meaningful handson learning experiences to better prepare them for the future.

Tommy says, “Our goal is to make sure that all of our youth are prepared for any future endeavor they wish to pursue!”

International President, Richard E. Peck, DTM Richard E. Peck, DTM, of Seymour, Connecticut, was a senior member of the Network Support division at AT&T, where he had worked for over 30 years. During his tenure as a project manager, he led cross-functional teams to successfully deliver several multimillion-dollar high-tech projects annually. His responsibilities also included writing and updating technical and training documents, as well as providing project analysis and solutions. He was also responsible for streamlining processes through the use of Robotic Process Automation.

He earned an MBA in international business at the University of Texas at Dallas. Peck is a certified project management professional by the Project Management Institute. His volunteer work includes serving as club president and Lieutenant Governor for Kiwanis International, serving with Lions Club International, as well as serving in various capacities with the Catholic War Veterans. He also enjoys traveling, studying world cultures, and helping others achieve more than they believe they can. Peck was a recipient of the 2018 Presidential Award for Volunteerism.

A Toastmaster for 14 years, Peck has been a member of his home club, Nutmeg in Woodbridge, Connecticut, since 2006 and is also a member of Park City Toastmasters in Stratford, Connecticut.

He has held a number of high-profile leadership positions within Toastmasters and has attained the Distinguished Toastmaster designation—the highest level of educational achievement in the organization.

He says, “To me, Toastmasters is about making a positive, life-changing impact on individuals throughout the world. Through Toastmasters we have the ability to change the world one member at a time!”

As an officer of the Toastmasters International Board of Directors, Peck is a “working ambassador” for the organization. He works with the Board to develop, support, and modify the policies and procedures that guide Toastmasters International in fulfilling its mission.

It’s amazing to realize how much of a challenge it was to step out of my comfort zone versus stepping up to the challenge. I joined Toastmasters in October 2013, and when I received my CC manual, I checked to see what the requirements were for achieving the DTM award. After seeing what the requirements were, I likened achieving the award to a journey of a thousand miles and I had no desire to travel that far. I forgot about the journey and started walking. The first step was the famous Ice Breaker speech, and I kept walking and finally, after years of persistence I arrived at my destination – DTM.

My DTM journey was much longer than I anticipated because I allowed too many other essential issues, like my health, and non-essential issues, like work, to get in the way. But my other Area Directors all getting their DTMs when I should have been receiving mine as well woke me up!! The rest is history.

My DTM journey did not begin with a personal or professional aspiration, but it was a culmination of fellow Toastmasters planting the seed, creating the right environment, nudging and assisting in the journey, and a desire to repay what I have received through Toastmasters.

When Pathways was introduced and there was a time limit to complete the legacy DTM, I realized that I already had about 85% of what I needed.

In June of 2019, I became Area Director of six clubs. In September 2019 I suffered a stroke, losing 75% of my vision and cognitive abilities. The Division B team helped me stay on as Area Director and even mentor a new club. On March 13, 2020, one day before my Area Contests, COVID19 cancelled everything. I had to reschedule and learn something called Zoom. Toastmasters pulled me through my stroke at a faster rate than my doctors thought possible, and I owe it to all the Toastmasters along the way!! I have been a member of the Toastmasters organization since April 1998.

I am a member of the Healing Communicators Toastmasters Club 7178, First Bahamas Branch Toastmasters Club 1600, Pinnacle Seekers Club 1513325 and the Earnest T. Strachan Advance Club 7108. I have served in basically every capacity at the club level including Club Coach, Sponsor, and Mentor. I have also served as Area Governor, Division Director, Distinguished Club Growth Director and Distinguished Program Quality Director. The most interesting thing about my DTM journey is being afforded the ability to serve the wonderful members of our District.

The achievement of this award is due largely in part to them.

I started visiting Brickell Toastmasters on December 4, 2013, and until the day I delivered my icebreaker March 6th, 2015 (457 days), I sat by the wall hoping I would not be called upon for Table Topics or a functionary role. I succeeded as if I had an invisible cloak. Actually, my then 9-year-old son delivered a Table Topics speech before I ever did and won best Table Topics speaker!

Earning my DTM award made me realize that the most important and least recognized skill in communication is listening.

My DTM journey started when I was invited to Toastmasters lunch in February 1974. This was my first day as a vice president at Citibank in New York. I joined the club and stayed for two years. This really took my career to the next level. In 1976, I left because my job required that I work in 40 countries during the next 30 years. What I learned from Toastmasters helped me immensely in adapting to cultures, making speeches and being an effective leader. I rejoined Toastmasters in Boca Raton in 2017 and was able to receive my DTM in June 2020.

My DTM journey was a very productive one. Although, we are in the midst of the Covid 19 pandemic throughout the world, Toastmasters found ways to stay connected. We stay connected by participating in various virtual webinars, club meetings and training sessions. It was good to see other Toastmasters club members visit and share with BUT Nation Builders and vice versa.

My Toastmasters journey has been 7 years in the making, and one of the most interesting factors of it would have to be earning a brand-new family.

It started with my home club, Luminaries 1510789, who gave me a chance and a space to be. Then I, along with my incredible Toastmaster brother and sister DTMs Glenisha T. Albury and Garth G. Jackson Jr., formed Visionaries 7548881, which was a joy to plant and water into blossoming. During that time, all Area 60 Clubs, Action for Achievement 1095, Chickcharney 971904, and Cable Beach West 6796, supported, respected, helped, and covered me. These incredible 5 clubs became the family I never knew I needed, and made me the DTM I am today, and for them, I am eternally grateful.

I have made the best choice in my life and it was -- joining Toastmasters in 2010. It was purely like taking a chance to know if I could speak before an audience. I had to admit to myself that it was a complete failure. It was the encouragement of the fellow Toastmasters in the club who had come to help me to stand up on my feet. I started to build up the confidence to stay and continue Toastmastering in the club. Toastmasters positively changed my life.

Toastmasters provides a mutual learning environment. I know that while I have benefited from Toastmasters, I have to support fellow members to develop oral communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth.
