Message from The Hon. Obadiah H. Wilchcombe MP, Minister of Tourism on the occasion of the Toastmasters’ 60th anniversary Conference held at Atlantis Resort, Bahamas.

Toastmasters have achieved a significant milestone in the Bahamas with its 60th anniversar y. Over these three decades it is easily verifiable fact that Toastmasters’ has sophisticated a fine cadre of Bahamians in the skill sets and discipline in communications and public speaking for which the organization is so highly respected.

Further; in the international arena, Toastmasters remains an appealing and dominant training and preparatory institution for citizens interested in attaining the highest goals of their profession and vocations.

The ability to relate in this new world age of Communications and the multimedia platforms available, the emerging new nuances and colloquialisms that are constantly in development; requires and needs organizations like Toastmasters to properly establish and mandate a universal approach and standards.

I am par ticularly pleased with the work Toastmasters continues to do in our Nation’s Junior and Senior High Schools in laying the early ground work for elocution in our boys and girls. This is very noble.

As you meet under your theme, “Back to the Future”; I hasten to humbly remind you of Shakespeare’s treatise ““Neither be the first to whom the new is tried nor be the last to lay the old aside.”

As Toastmasters is an international organization with affiliates in numerous tongues other than English, I wish to implore you to be vigilant in your endeavours to ensure that the basics of good grammar, punctuation, spelling, pronunciations, oratory and selected emphasis remain the nonnegotiable platform of your agenda. The abbreviations and slangs of the internet and the cell phone have become accepted and tolerated inclusions in the Queen’s English. As with all short cuts, the standard can be compromised.

I implore you to guard against this.

The Ministry of Tourism welcomes you to the Atlantis Resort for your conference.

In your 60 years you no doubt have much to talk about, much to share and so much more to do.

As you turn down your emblematic hour glass or as the future now provides a digital stop watch; to begin your deliberations, please be assured of the highest regards of my Ministry for a most successful Conference.

Sincerely,

Area 92 Director TM Tiffany Burrell-Roberts would like to congratulate all the clubs in Area 92 for having 100% officers trained, membership dues paid and for having at least two or more goals posted. Congratulations. Let’s end this year as President a Distinguish Area once again.
