Greetings Toastmasters of the new District 47!

We’re well on our way to an amazing Toastmasters year. Our Immediate Past District Governor had the challenge of preparing 2 new Districts last year, District 47 and District 48, to be prepared to move ahead with success. District 47 now includes 7 counties in Southeast Florida and The Islands of the Bahamas. We started the year with 162 Toastmasters clubs!

A more significant change happened as well on July 1. On July 1, Toastmasters International changed the way that they define success for Districts. The previous Distinguished District Program has been replaced with a new system that more closely aligns District goals with the club goals in the Distinguished Club Program. In short, in order for our District to be Distinguished, our clubs need to be Distinguished. We have 3 goals based on the percentage of clubs that are distinguished, the percentage of membership growth and the percentage of paid club growth. Under the previous system, only 6 Districts in the world could become President’s Distinguished and another 6 could become Select Distinguished. Our level of achievement is no longer dependent upon what other Districts accomplish. Every District in the world could potentially become President’ Distinguished, the same as every Club can become President’s Distinguished.

Our main goal this year is to help every club become Distinguished or better. We are available to assist you through our team of Area Governors, Division Governors and other District officers.

The District Trio is completely committed to your success as a member of Toastmasters International. The main focus is on the Member Experience. Are you getting out of Toastmasters what you were looking for when you joined, or more? If you’re not, there are numerous resources available to assist your club in improving.

We hope to see everyone at the upcoming TLI’s. Remember, TLI’s are for all members, not just club officers.

Message from Lt. Governor Education & Training "Our Fall Conference was the best ever!" Those were the words I heard from many of our long-time members. Speaking with many First Timers, they were also blown away by the experience. We had over 300 in attendance and more than 180 were First Timers!

I want to thank many members of the Conference Team, including Lydia Harris, Debbie Kest, Marlene Bryan, Michael Brown, Lou Brown, Beverly Cordner, Joe Duerr, Thomas Plant, John Hockey, Samantha O'Neil, and Lisa Foose. Your efforts are appreciated!

Special thanks to our Bahamian Toastmasters including Judy Simmons and Andrew Albury for showing us the true meaning of "Hospitality". Your team of conference ambassadors made those Toastmasters arriving from Florida feel truly welcomed to the Bahamas!

And Super-extra-special thanks to our Conference Chair, Damien Miller, for spending the time to organize this First Class event!

“Are you getting the Ultimate Member Experience?”

Toastmasters International ranks among the highest providers of self-development programs in the world.

Its success has mostly depended of the thousands of satisfied members who continue to get the best experience during their club meetings or by participating in many of all of the activities sponsored throughout the year. But in District 47, are you getting the Ultimate Member Experience? Do you know what the Ultimate Member Experience should be? Do you know what a Quality Club looks like?

Start by taking a look at the Successful Club Series module: “Moments of Truth.” http://www.toastmasters.org/ Members/MembershipBuilding/Moments-of-Truth.aspx Moments of Truth has been used by countless clubs to sharpen their focus on their most important goal: member service and personal satisfaction. By concentrating on First Impressions, Membership Orientation, Fellowship, Variety and Communication, Program Planning and Meeting Organization, Membership Strength and Achievement Recognition, Moments of Truth ensures that clubs have the information they need to achieve their goals. During this year, our District will focus on Club Quality in order to ensure that our members are truly getting what they came for.

Do you think your club could use some direction in these areas? What about our District in general? We would like to hear what you have to say!!! Toastmasters International recognizes the importance of our members and their feedback so much so that the Area Governor’s report is specifically based on the components of Moments of Truth! We want to continue to provide a safe environment where members can learn. As such, it is important that all we do is evaluated and action plans are implemented.

I encourage each and every member to let us know if your expectations are not being met and how can we continue to provide the Ultimate Member Experience that we are responsible to provide. Use the resources you have available including your Club Officers, District Officers, and World Headquarters to let us know how we can do better. How can I help??? We have such a vast diversity of experienced members who can provide guidance. In the end, our lifeline is our members, without you – Nothing Really Matters!!!

On that note, please take a look at all of the volunteer opportunities we offer for our District. Are you looking to be part of the solution? Or are you in need of a project to get to your next designation?

Advanced Leader Silver (1 year as a district officer, A Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) is the highest credential and providing specific support to another club) a member can earn in Toastmasters. It demonstrates a high level of competence, accomplishment and dedication to the art of both communication and leadership.

Will it take a long time??

You decide! You can take three years or thirty What do I get from becoming a Distinguished Toastyears – it’s up to you!

You get to grow confident in speaking in front of audiences and to define yourself as a leader. You get to learn what makes an excellent speaker and a strong leader. You get to express yourself and discover your own power to organize, motivate, and lead.

Happy 88th Birthday, Toastmasters

Is your club having a birthday party this month?

If not, why not? If Dr. Ralph Smedley hadn’t had that first meeting on October 22, 1924 in Santa Ana, California, we wouldn’t be reading a Toastmasters’ publication.

Dr. Smedley realized that effective communication skills are directly proportional to success on the job and in life. His first group met in the basement of a YMCA but they were all there because they were interested in improving their speaking skills in a supportive, informal environment.

Eventually the group was named ‘Toastmasters’ and word spread. New groups began forming in surrounding areas and it wasn’t long before people in other states contacted Dr. Smedley, asking permission to start additional clubs.

88 years later membership is at an all-time high with the latest count indicating that there are approximately 280,000 members in over 13,500 clubs in 116 countries.

As you know, the organization continues to thrive as it helps more people worldwide develop the communication skills and confidence they need to become leaders in their field. And, it is one of the few organizations that is simply for self-improvement.

So…it’s not too late. Plan that birthday party meeting. We all have a lot to celebrate. Have a ‘toast’ to Dr. Smedley who, incidentally, passed away Sept. 11, 1965 at the age of 87.

I doubt he could have imagined that ‘basement brainstorm’ would have had the impact he has and still be thriving 88 years later.

Will you help share the message about “SPEAK”?

How many of you have heard of “SPEAK” (the movie)? This documentary was recently released. It’s about the fear of public speaking and includes Toastmasters World Championship of Public Speaking. Paul Galichia and Brian Weidling spent nearly two years on this project. According to the website, they “conducted hundreds of interviews about public speaking anxiety, and captured every stage of the tense, highly competitive World Championship of Public Speaking. It all culminates in a week of fascinating human drama in Calgary, Alberta, after which one person is crowned “World Champion of Public Speaking”.” (Our own District 47 competitor, Jim Bussey, competed that year.) Reviews say that it is funny, inspiring, moving, and utterly absorbing while following the trail of those brave souls who take on the fear of public speaking – the world’s #1 fear – and live to tell the tale.

The movie is available to buy for $25 or rent for $149. However, for many clubs it would be hard to show it even once since, at 89 minutes, it’s longer than a meeting. For small clubs, $149 rental is a barrier.

Here’s where I’d like to ask for your help. It is available to save on Netflix…when it’s released. However, according to Paul, there needs to be 60 people put it in their Netflix queue before it will be released.

If you’re a member of Netflix, will you request it so that we can get those 60? Ask your neighbors and friends; ask anyone you know who has Netflix to help us so we can receive it in the mail and watch it at home.

On behalf of hundreds of island Toastmasters, Thank You !

For “JUNKANOO FEVER”!!

This special event was 18 years in the making and it has deep meaning for old and new Bahamian Toastmasters. Countless hours, meetings, phone calls, letters, e-mails and negotiations went toward molding what promises to be a Conference not to forget.

So I thank you for supporting the result of this hard work by attending in some form.

From the moment I joined the Toastmasters Program in 2002, the culmination of my experience has always been realized at the District 47 Conference. It is a forum for our extended family in The Bahamas and Florida to come together and celebrate the true meaning of being a Toastmaster. The Conference is an opportunity to build your professional network, learn new skills and challenge your ability in contest. The experience made me truly appreciate this program, and it added incredible value to the huge investment I was making in my professional development.

Yet, I always wondered of how amazing a Conference would be if it were ever held in the Bahamas. Needless to say, when the news came to me that the District Conference would finally return, I was ecstatic… not even thinking about the next offer to serve that would come my way regarding being Conference Chair.

Today, I admit that serving as Chairperson for this event has been a humbling and challenging experience. The tests were not short in number – longer work hours, countless meetings, liters of midnight oil burned, even a Hurricane less than 7 days before the start.

It is an experience I will never forget and will always cherish for the lessons learned. Yet, I am confident that our goal will be achieved; proving that the Bahamas is ready, willing and able to execute yet another District or International Conference in very short order.

BRATM – A Unique Experience What is it that makes a particular Toastmasters Club unique, that attracts and holds its members, that provides a meaningful and valuable experience for all participants? One club in Boca Raton has found a unique approach that is paying significant dividends to its members and the Toastmasters community.

It is axiomatic that no two clubs are completely alike. The key, underlying processes of planned speeches, evaluations, and table topics vary little. It is how these fundamental aspects of the Toastmasters experience are applied that creates the differences between clubs. Ideally, these differences support the individual members’ needs and preferences. Such is the case of the Boca Raton Advanced Toastmasters (BRATM) Club, which recently celebrated its first year anniversary.

This celebration is notable not so much for its duration as much as a recognition of the value of the club’s unique approach to standard Toastmasters procedures. Shortly after its initiation, the club members recognized the value of the overall evaluation process and implemented two changes to the standard Toastmasters meeting agenda – All speeches receive a formal evaluation, but then, extending the basic purpose of the evaluation process, the floor is opened to all other attendees to provide additional evaluations and insights to the speaker.

The result is a well-developed mix of differentiated inputs for each speaker to consider for future speeches.

The major innovation in the BRATM experience, though, is the establishment of an “impromptu evaluator” in its meetings. Instead of assigning a planned evaluator for each scheduled speech, the evaluator position is purposely left unassigned for several of the planned speeches. It is then the Toastmaster’s prerogative to identify an impromptu evaluator at the completion of those speeches. This approach has the effect of not only ensuring that everyone pays attention to a speech (thereby improving listening skills), but also hones the spontaneous delivery of what is akin to an extended table topic.

Realizing that it was on to a good idea, BRATM has extended this concept and applied it to impromptu speeches during those meetings when time permits during any given meeting. (The idea of always having a speech in your “back pocket” has been given a dramatically new meaning.) Overall, the application of the general impromptu concept has paid significant dividends to the club’s members, ranging from an increased sense of personal challenge and accomplishment to the development of numerous speech contest awards at the Area and Division level.

Rather than rest on its laurels, BRATM has recognized that an advanced club should also act as a model for the clubs from which it draws its members. Accordingly, BRATM has sought ways to provide value added activities and events to clubs in the Boca Raton and immediately surrounding areas. Examples of this aspect of its orientation include the following – 



Open Houses have been conducted every six months in which members from all local and nearby Toastmasters Clubs have been invited to attend and see the innovative BRATM procedures in action.

One of those open house meetings included an invitation to meet and hear a past international speech champion.

Speech contests are actively supported through invitations to all potential contestants from local and nearby clubs to deliver a speech at BRATM meetings and receive multiple evaluations and recommendations for improvement. In addition, BRATM members volunteer to be test speakers for evaluation contests and volunteer to act as judges for club contests.

Although one of the synonyms for brat is “little horror”, do not be mistaken by the acronym – this is actually a club where major personal and organizational growth can be found. BRATM is proud of its contributions to its members and the clubs it supports, welcoming others to come and see it in action. The 10 Commandments of Communication

by Michael Landrum, ATMB 1. Listen generously. Emerson said: “First seek to understand, then to be understood.” How do you listen to an audience? Do your research. Find out who they are, what they need and want, and what they expect from you. When you step to the lectern, pause and listen. Are they ready to hear you? During your speech, keep listening. Pay attention to them. Are they leaning forward, backward or on each other? Be willing to depart from your prepared remarks to recover your rapport with them. Ask questions.

Even something as simple as “Is that clear?” can reestablish contact.

2. Say what you mean and mean what you say. Aren’t these two phrases the same? No indeed: “Say what you mean” is about telling the truth, “Mean what you say” is about making a commitment, keeping your promise, honoring your word. Have something meaningful to say. Step to the lectern with the intention of making a difference to your audience.

3. Use the fewest words with the fewest syllables. I run afoul of this one all the time. It’s the main reason I rewrite so often, looking for big, two-dollar words I can swap for a single 10-cent syllable. Delete therefore, insert so. That’s real economy in writing.

Remember that the basic unit of communication is not the word but the idea.

4. Align with your audience. We may consider it our task to speak to the audience, but it is sometimes more important to speak for them. Express those thoughts and feelings that you share with them. Even if you think they are wrong and you are the advocate of sweeping change, you must first understand and articulate their feelings. Great leaders know that leadership begins with the pronoun we.

5. Be specific. Use stories, anecdotes, parables and examples rather than generalities and abstractions. This is a tough one for some people. They love to wander through a topic in the abstract, scattering generalities as they go. The great teachers and speakers pepper their talks with vivid, detailed examples. “He seemed upset as he left” is general. “He blew his nose, kicked the dog and slammed the door” is specific.

6. Suit the action to the word, the word to the action. Don’t say “I’m glad to be here” while looking at your wristwatch. Be aware of your non-verbal communication. Your gestures, posture, facial expressions, energy, tone of voice, and a thousand other tiny, unuttered elements actually carry the true and specific meaning of your communication. We can understand the words “I love you” well enough. But their true importance, their actual meaning, is all wrapped up in how they are spoken, and by whom.

7. Structure your speech. One valuable way to make your talk memorable is to speak to a structure and make your listeners aware of it. Share with them the form of your thoughts as well as the content and they will be able to follow more complex ideas. It will be easier for you to remember, too. People appreciate the scenery more with a glance at the road map every now and then.

8. Speak to be understood. Have the courtesy to develop your voice so that all may hear you. You groom your appearance, so why not cultivate your voice? With a little effort it can be strong, crisp, clear and various in texture, color and range. It’s sad when speakers expend their energy to create a vivid, well-constructed talk and then whisper, mutter or mumble.

9. Speak for the benefit of others. Serve your audience well by keeping their interests foremost in your mind. This is the golden rule of speaking. As an audience member you can easily tell when a speaker is self-serving. Nothing communicates more clearly than intention.

10. Speak from your highest self. The highest self is where hope resides. To lead effectively requires a courageous, positive, optimistic view. As any astronaut will tell you, if you get high enough you will be in perpetual sunshine. There must be a caveat attached to this rule, however: Beware of elevating yourself with a high horse. Be humble. Having an opinion is a meager accomplishment. On most occasions a modest demeanor improves communication.
