Toastmasters International Where Leaders are Made

Toastmasters International unveiled its refreshed brand on August 17, 2011. Since that date, I’ve seen and heard many comments about the new brand. Some were positive and some were not so good. I encourage every member to review the history of the Toastmasters brand to see how much work was involved in the process.

Toastmasters recognized the need for a brand refreshing in 2008 and preliminary discussions were held in 2009. Branding agencies were researched and interviewed and in November 2009, a company by the name of Innovation Protocol was selected. Many of their employees are current or former Toastmasters.

The agency partner Innovation Protocol spent several months researching Toastmasters. They did the following: · Talked with members, District leaders, board members, potential members and guests of Toastmasters Clubs · Reviewed Toastmasters materials · Attended conferences, club meetings and Club Officer trainings · Researched the competition Research revealed that the Toastmasters brand was lost. While Toastmasters encourages club and district individuality, they also encourage us to communicate a consistent message around the world.

Many districts had their own banners and logos, adding to the inconsistency of the Toastmasters brand.

The Toastmasters logo was changed and you may ask why it was necessary to change the globe emblem. Continents were removed to equally represent the 116 countries where Toastmasters meet.

The globe represents worldwide presence and the tilt of the latitude and longitude lines implies motion. The globe emblem will always be a part of Toastmasters. It is used as a seal on the backs of manuals and other official documents.

Our responsibility as members is to reinforce the new brand through consistency in our Clubs. This means, updating agendas, websites, letterheads and business cards. Badges and pins are now different so when you order these items from Toastmasters International, you will receive the newly branded material.

POSITIONING STATEMENT

I wasn’t born a leader. They were all around me though. In the community, at work, at school. Leaders were everywhere. They were the heads of families, coaches of teams, business leaders, mentors, organizaFonal decision-­‐makers.

I admired these leaders. They influenced who I was and who I was becoming because I aspired to walk in their footsteps.

And, so, I commiJed myself to becoming one.

Finally, it came to me. It wasn’t just what leaders knew that enabled them to lead. They had a voice. They could tell their story. They could listen and answer. They didn’t just accomplish, they communicated.

So I set out to find my voice. Learn to process ideas in the midst of discussion. Train myself to listen aJenFvely. Learn to give feedback – and accept it. I needed to organize, plan, deliver and follow up. I needed a place where all the ingredients were available, and someone would guide me along the way.

I found that place. I found a community of learners and the path to leadership.

I am a leader – and I was made.

Unfortunately however, Shawn was KO’d by the clock.

He went a few seconds overtime and was Shawn Purvis therefore, disqualified.

“My Daddy’s Shoes” This did not dampen our spirits; we are extremely proud of Shawn for his effort.

International Speech Contest Finals at 8:00 AM. The winner with rights to the title, ‘2011 World Champion of Public Speaking’ is Jock Elliott, District 69, Australia. The team then attended the Region 8 meeting and participated in the roast of outgoing International Director, Pamela Christopher DTM. District Governor Pamela D. Rolle presented her namesake Pamela with a gift as a token of appreciation on behalf of District 47. In the afternoon, we attended the annual business meeting where we assisted in electing the new Board of Directors of Toastmasters International.

On Friday, the morning sun had barely begun to illuminate the Las Vegas strip when the team’s schedule kicked off with the Candidates Showcase. Since Monday, the FAB 5 were busy interviewing candidates vying for positions on the Toastmasters International Board. These were done by appointments, which in some cases DG Rolle had scheduled weeks in advance of arriving in Las Vegas. A happy District Governor Rolle had this to say: "This is the reason your clubs’ proxies were so important. I wish to thank all clubs who responded to the call to assign club proxies. Due to your overwhelming response, District 47 had a 'strong voice' at Saturday’s business meeting."

The rigorous but exciting week closed out on Saturday night with the grand affair… The President’s Dinner Dance. The team, all adorned in the hottest fashions, was present and accounted for at this gala event. Following the fabulous dinner and all of the formalities, it was time for dancing… and then there was more dancing. In fact, some (who shall remain nameless) literally went from the dance floor straight to the airport for the early Sunday morning ‘red eye’ flight.

Sounds like fun, right? Well, by now you’re probably saying, “Wow what a great time I missed!” The good news is… you don’t have to miss it next year. Begin planning now to join the huge District 47 contingent that will be in Orlando Florida next year when we hope to be recognized as ‘President’s Distinguished; #1 in the world!’

It’s That Time Again … Dues Renewal Tips!

The time has come for club members to renew their dues!

Here are a few tips that will help ease the dues blues when processing membership payments. Club Officers simply log in to the www.toastmasters.org/ login.aspx. Enter your user name and personal password (a club password is no longer required).

1. Once logged in, click on Members site (top left of page)

Some important notes regarding membership payments processing:  Dues must be paid for a minimum of six members and at least three must be renewing.  We do not suggest submitting renewal by email because it is not secure.  The payment deadline for October dues is September 30, 2011.  Submitting dues by September 30 earns each club half of DCP goal #10.

If paying by check, you can print the list with the renewing members indicated and mail it, along with payment to Toastmasters International. Checks must be made payable to Toastmasters International. With more than 12,500 clubs paying dues online, we encourage you to pay early and avoid any system slowness due to heavy activity.

What I Learned on By:aKenneth Rainy Night in Boca Raton West, CTM I had the privilege of being the Evaluation Contest Test Speaker during the Boca Raton Toastmasters Club’s Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contests held on August 9, 2011. It was a rainy Tuesday night in Boca Raton. Jerry Fernandez, who is a member of the Boca Raton Toastmasters (also Area 43 Governor), had asked for a volunteer. I’m so glad I did!

I got a chance to see a dynamic and very well organized clubsponsored event. Contest Chair, Michele Guarino publicized this contest so well that they had a full house. I could have sworn there were about eighty people, but Michele tells me that she counted about fifty-five. Whatever the number, their enthusiasm made it seem like a hundred people!

Kris Dawkins, the Contest Master, was perfect in his first-time Ken West, VP Public Relations role. He did an amazing job with his welcoming personality and good humor. The five humorous speakers were truly funny, and my five evaluators were uniformly excellent. This event was a team effort… and it showed!

I learned as an individual Toastmaster: Being an Evaluation Test Speaker at an Evaluation Contest gives you an amazing opportunity to learn from numerous evaluations offering multiple perspectives.

You learn about mannerisms you may not be aware of.

You get ideas for new openings and closings.

You receive suggestions about movement and gestures.

You get many different perspectives from accomplished speakers.

You get confirmation of your strengths, as well as how you come across to different audiences.

You get to hear other accomplished speakers, the contestants. You get a real energy boost.

If you want to gain the maximum benefit from being a Toastmaster, volunteering to be an Evaluation Test Speaker is one good way to begin. If by chance it’s a rainy night, do it anyway… you’ll be glad you did!

Doctor Prescribes 8 Doses of ‘YLP’ for Pembroke Pines Kids By: Anthony (Tony) Longley, District 47 PRO

After seeing a promotional blitz sent out by District 47 in early 2011 about the Toastmasters International Youth Leadership Program (YLP), TM Bhaskar Karumanchi of Pembroke Pines Toastmasters Club #6003 knew immediately that this is something she would really enjoy doing. So, she contacted the then District 47, YLP Chair for East Coast and The Bahamas, Anthony (Tony) Longley, DTM to learn more about what’s involved and how to get started as a YLP Coordinator. With the “how to” information in hand… she felt she was ready! Her target group would be children who reside within her housing development complex, Pembroke Isles. Their parents are members of the Home Owners Association (HOA), so this would be easy, she thought. TM Bhaskar Karumanchi, who is also affectionately referred to as ‘Dr. K’, is actually, Dr. Bhaskar Karumanchi, M.D., a renowned Anesthesiologist by profession, now retired. ‘Dr. K’, said, “I faced numerous challenges, from parental concerns to the disappointing numbers by some children not showing up and personal health issues. Yes, I felt discouraged many times but… I never gave up!” She continued, “What was particularly encouraging was the support of the HOA President, Mr. Roberts, who gave approval for the use of the club house.”

Finally, on April 16, 2011 with 14 students, ages mostly ranging from 13 to 16, ‘Dr. K’ started her YLP. Two of the participants were only 11 years of age but they were matured, gifted children and were eager to learn and explore new horizons so she allowed them in. During the 8 weeks program, it was an amazing experience to watch the metamorphosis of these once bashful and in some cases, introverted kids opened up like new petals on a flower.

“It’s crazy how fast the weeks can go by when you’re having so much fun!” Says; ‘Dr. K.’ It was now time to plan the final session. The date was set…

June 11, 2011. It was decided that each participant would present a speech to display their newly acquired skills for the parents and friends. Invites were communicated to parents and supporters. Mr. Lou Roberts, the HOA President and Distinguished Toastmaster Longley, the Keynote Speaker who resides in The Bahamas were the Guests of Honor. Following the speeches, the participants got a chance to display their analytical skills by evaluating their colleagues. In his keynote address, DTM Longley told the students, “You should never give up and must be willing to accept the responsibility for everything you do, no matter the outcome… good or bad!” He said, “The world has room for more great leaders and effective communicators.” YLP coordinator, ‘Dr. K’ gave remarks and thanked the participants, sponsors and supporters.

She also recognized Pembroke Pines Club President, Luis Velez for the club’s sponsorship of the YLP participants’ handbooks and TM. Stuart Perez, her Assistant Coordinator.

‘Dr. K’ said, she is an avid Toastmaster whose greatest passion is participating in Toastmasters and earning Educational Awards. TM Bhaskar Karumanchi said, “I feel proud that I have earned my ACG ALB and I’m privileged to now be serving as the Area 24 Governor in Division B with Jeanine Kinsey, DTM – Division Governor. I am also extremely motivated by the outstanding leadership of Pamela D. Rolle, DTM – District 47 Governor. I’m inspired by her example so, I strive to do the best I can!

The name, Sensor Toast Toastmasters Club may suggest that it is a corporate club but it’s actually open to anyone. We have over 30 registered members. Our average attendance is about 15 members per meeting. Our motto is, “Home of Champions”. Our club has had a contestant finish in one of the top three positions in each Area 44 contest starting from September 2007 through February 2011. We recently held our Humorous and Evaluation Speech Contests, with 4 evaluation contestants and 5 humorous speech contestants. This is the largest number we’ve ever had competing in our club’s history. Competition was fierce! Good luck to Michael Thorn (our evaluation contest winner) and Atul Khungar (our humorous speech contest winner) as they advance to the upcoming Area 44 contests on Friday September 9! We look forward to both of them continuing our Home of Champions tradition!

The year ending 6/30/2011 was a record breaking year for our club since we accomplished all 10 DCP points for the first time ever in our club’s history! Due to the guidance of our Immediate Past President Linda Magness and other club officers, we had well-organized meetings with superb manual speeches, original table topics, and meaningful evaluations. Together, these standards led to the accomplishment of our goals. We earned 4 new competent communicators, 2 advanced communicators, and 2 competent leaders. Due to our warm and supportive club environment, we had more than 10 new members join during the year. In addition, most of our club officers were trained at both Toastmaster leadership Institute workshops held during the year. The dues section of our club’s website enabled us to ensure that notices were sent to all members and resulted in all dues being paid in a timely manner during the year. We are looking forward to another record breaking year by again accomplishing 10 DCP points! Keep your meetings well organized and exciting and your members will remain enthused. Then, after June 30, 2012, your club will also have good reasons to… CELEBRATE!

Growing Up!

As we grow and mature our lives become more fruitful, but alas, more complicated. It’s hard not to think back to the things that were GREAT about being a kid. Hopefully reading my favorites will trigger a few of your own.

Here goes:  Staying home from school sick and having mom feed me tomato soup & ginger ale  First day of summer vacation – riding bikes to the pool with my brother

 Playing Marco Polo in the pool until our parents couldn’t stand it anymore  Lying in bed on Sat morning, hearing the lawnmower and smelling the fresh cut grass  Playing school (and I stress the word playing)  Staying up late when my parents had a party  First new puppy  Sunday night TV – ED Sullivan, Disney, Bonanza  Getting dropped off at the mall with a friend for two hours and having $10.00 to spend on whatever I want  Riding to U-Tote-Um on my boyfriend’s bike handlebars & getting an orange wax whistle Of course the biggest thing about being a kid was having no responsibilities and no worries. It has been said a million times, but bears repeating: “If only we knew then, what we know now!” It’s lovely to reflect on the past and happy times, but dangerous to dwell there. One of the hardest parts of life (for me) has always been “living in the moment”. Every day is a new opportunity to make new “firsts” and new memories to reflect on later. While we should never stop growing, we also should never fully let go of the kid in us!

I will leave you with a quote from Dale Carnegie: “One of the most tragic things I know about human nature is that all of us tend to put off living. We are all dreaming of some magical rose garden over the horizon - instead of enjoying the roses that are blooming outside our windows today.”

Getting aBy: Louis DTM is Easier Than…

Brown, Area 44 Governor Are you working to achieve that ultimate Toastmasters goal of DTM? Getting all those speeches presented, projects accomplished and having it all signed off by the VPE. I am diligently working towards my DTM which appears totally less daunting than the professional credentials I have recently earned. I am now officially a FCAS. FCAS is not a new spa technique, nor is it an acronym for remembering passwords, it represents – Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society. This is the highest level to be earned for insurance representatives pursuing an actuarial designation.

The process for becoming FCAS certified includes 9 exams, each requiring approximately 400 hours of study. Considerably less time is needed to get that DTM. The Society passes only 30-40% of the candidates each exam sitting and it is not Louis M. Brown, ACB, ALB Area 44 Governor uncommon for an individual to fail a particular exam several times before passing. lbrown@toastmastersd47.org So you can imagine my joy and relief upon the news I had indeed passed the exam.

Good thing there are no tests at Toastmasters! However, like Toastmasters there is a conference in November which will be held in Chicago. The President of the Society will confer a degree on all new Fellows, of which I will be one. More information about the Society can be found on the web site: www. casact.org.

Now about that DTM. More information on all the educational programs and how to earn your DTM can be found on www.toastmaster.org. I encourage you to further your personal and professional education; it increases your career eligibility, your confidence and your spirits!

Now, while you’re at it… why not pursue that DTM the same time. Follow my lead and you’ll find that it’s a lot easier than… you may think!

International Convention First Timer First time convention attendee, Lydia Harris, Area 25 Governor, took full advantage of the networking opportunities at the 80th Annual International Convention held in Las Vegas.

As a member of the District Delegation, Lydia seized every chance to meet new people and build new friendships. “I wanted the real convention experience!” she said.

Dualing Areas!

By: Matt Siewert, Area 35 Governor A DUAL Area Contest was held on September 13, 2011 in Tampa, Florida presented by Area 34 and Area 35. This combined Dual Area Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest served a DUAL purpose. The combined Area contest selected respective winners of Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contests to advance to the Division C contest on October 8, but this event also served as a donations drive and fund raiser for Metropolitan Ministries in Tampa, Florida - a non-profit organization that helps families in crisis and the homeless.

A volunteer Executive Chef prepared fancy high-end dinners for attendees who pre-purchased in advance, via the online event registration at www.ToastmastersD47.org. All the proceeds from this amazing meal went to an equally amazing cause - providing “Boxes of Hope” filled with nutritious food to feed a family in crisis for three days.

Speech Contest Admission was FREE with a donated good will item to Metropolitan Ministries. Metropolitan Ministries provided an exceptional venue for the Area Speech Contests. The new program follows a very successful “Pilot” program organized and established at the JPMC Highlanders Toastmasters Club #680990 at J.P. Morgan Chase in Tampa, Florida.

The program was born as a High Performance Leadership project led by Matt Siewert, Area 35 Governor and immediate past President of JPMC Highlanders Club. A team of unbelievably helpful Toastmasters and PMP’s, so dedicated to this cause that without them this would not have been possible.

As part of this new program, any PMP who is a member of PMI-Tampa Bay (PMI-TB) and who also belongs to a Toastmasters club in the Tampa Bay area registered with the local PMI will be able to take advantage of earning Professional Development Units (PDU) with Toastmasters roles at the Toastmaster club meetings. Not only will the Project Management Institute benefit, this collaboration will also benefit the Toastmasters Clubs in the long run as a result of increased CC and CL manual completions and this means… more DCP points! So you see… it’s a ‘win win’ formula!

The bi-product, of course, is that the individual member attains his or her goals in the process. Don’t forget, in Toastmasters the member is where it truly counts! Family, Friends & Fellow TMs of Neil S. Percentie: Neil Sean Percentie, AKA "100 Percentie" was fatally shot in an incident in Nassau on the evening of Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at the age of 35. He was an active member of his home club, First Bahamas Branch, Toastmasters Club 1600, a Past President of Club 9477 and was this year's Treasurer of Advanced Club 7108. He was a well respected political activist who kept many sitting politicians "on their toes" which resulted in additional nicknames such as "Mayor" & "Senator". Neil was known as a fun loving, "life of the party" type of guy whose deep, thunderous laughter could cause the floor to vibrate. He was a community leader, philanthropist and a benefactor to the underprivileged. His loyalty to loved ones and his sense of commitment earned him his tag name "100 Percentie" by his TM brothers in Club 1600. The club meeting on Sept. 8 took the form of a memorial tribute and it was decided that the first meeting in September each year be dubbed, Neil Percentie's Night. Funeral services are planned for Saturday September 17, 2011 in Nassau.

Family & Friends of Victims of the Tragedy on 9/11: Our thoughts, meditations and prayers are extended to the families and friends of the 3000 plus victims, whose lives were changed in a wink on that faithful morning of September 11, 2001. So many loved ones were either lost or left severely scarred. On that day, the world came to a virtual standstill. The resulting affects were felt physically, emotionally, psychologically and economically, on a global level. To our members who were personally impacted, please know that your District 47 family stands with you now and always as you reflect upon the memories of those whom you lost but will always love!
