TOASTMASTER CHATTER • Majcher Citation Mark Majcher, CTM/CL from Club 9269, received a 2002 Presidential Citation from International President Alfred Herzing for his “TOPICAL TIPS” column for the Toastmaster magazine. Majcher is a member of ToastSTARS Toastmasters, a Northrop Gruman Club in Melbourne, Fla. Only four other District 47 members have earned the honor: 2001 Karl Righter, DTM; 1989 David Meeks, DTM, 1988 Ann Tillman, DTM; and 1986 Frank Tillman, DTM. Majcher was honored at the Hall of Fame ceremonies at the 2002 Toastmasters International Convention in San Antonio, Tex.

• Advanced Club If you are a CTM within three speeches of obtaining your ATM-B and interested in joining an the Advanced Toastmasters Club of Central Florida, now’s your chance. Conference highlights you won’t want to miss include the Communication and Leadership luncheon, Communication and Leadership awards presentation, enlightening educational workshops, the District Council meeting and election of District Officers to serve from July 1, 2003, to June 30, 2004.

But the favorite events are the Friday night Table Topics Contest and Saturday evening International Speech Contest.

Winners of Club events compete at the Area level then Division. Both winners go on to compete at the District 47 Spring Conference, with the winner of the International Speech Contest moving on to the Region VIII Contest. Come cheer on your favorite!

The winner of that event competes for the title “World Champion of Public Speaking” at the International Convention in Atlanta Aug. 23.

We have reached our ATM goal for Distinguished District! Kudos also to the 66 Toastmasters who have earned a CL, the 18 Toastmasters who have earned an AL and the 16 Toastmasters who have earned a DTM between July 1, 2002, and December 31, 2002! You all are helping to “Unlock the Possibilities” for yourself and your Clubs! Thank you for working diligently to improve your own communication and leadership skills and to help your clubs in achieving the Distinguished Club goals.

Keep up the good work and we will achieve the CTM goal for Distinguished District by March!

Go for the GOALS Eileen Sarris, District Governor

The December Distinguished Club Program reports have been posted on the Toastmasters International Web site.

You can check your Club’s progress at the following link: http:// www.toastmasters.org/reports.asp This is the half way point in the Toastmaster year. The Clubs in District 47 are doing well, but we still have a lot to accomplish before June 30!

We have 43 Clubs which have already met 5 or more goals. Many Clubs are close with 4 goals (26 Clubs) and 3 goals (48 Clubs). Every Club can reach Distinguished Club status by June 30. How? 1) Determine which members are close to achieving a CTM, ATM, CL, AL, and/ or DTM and make sure that they are completed and submitted before June 30.

2) Hold a membership drive to bring in new members. Two of the goals are met by the Club enrolling 4 new members and 4 more new members.

3) Make sure your Club Officers attend training. The dates and times of the Division Planet Toastmasters are posted on the District 47 Web site. Talk to your Division or Area Governor for time and location of make-up training sessions if your officers cannot attend a Division Planet Toastmasters.

Officer Qualifications and Responsibilities District 47 officer elections will be held at the District Conference at 2:15 p.m. on May 17, 2003, at the Hilton Orlando/Altamonte Springs, 350 S. North Lake Blvd., Altamonte Springs, Fla. If you would like to serve in one of these positions or if you know of someone who would like to serve, please contact Nominating Committee Chair Cathy Epler at 727-376-5825. She will send information to you about the eligibility requirements, Toastmasters International’s rules on campaigns and a release form that you must sign and return.

LT. GOVERNOR EDUCATION AND TRAINING -- Mission/ Purpose: Under the guidance of the District Governor, strives

to have every Club and each member reap the benefits of the Toastmasters educational program and to have every club become a Distinguished Club. Responsible for achieving Distinguished District goals for CTMs, ATMs and Distinguished Clubs. Provides direction and counsel to Division Governors, Area Governors and Club officers on the educational opportunities in Toastmasters. Responsible for the design and conduct of successful District training programs, conferences and other District educational events. Qualifications: The Lt. Governor Education and Training shall have served at least six (6) consecutive months as a Club President and at least twelve (12) consecutive months as a Lt. Governor, Division Governor or an Area Governor or a combination thereof.

THE MISSION OF THE DISTRICT The mission of the District is to enhance the performance and extend the network of Clubs, thereby offering greater numbers of people the opportunity to benefit from the Toastmasters educational program by: • • •

Focusing on the critical success factors as specified by the District educational and membership goals.

Insuring that each Club effectively fulfills its responsibilities to its members.

Providing effective training and leadership development opportunities for Club and District Officers.

TALK UP TOASTMASTERS! Sign up five new members between February 1 and March 31

C

lub-building is a continuing process and it’s up to every member to help recruit new Toastmasters.

Earn a special ribbon from Toastmasters International to display on your Club’s banner by adding 5 new members during the months of February and March.

During the Talk up Toastmasters! membership contest, encourage your Club’s members to invite as many guests to your Club’s meetings as possible.

Consider conducting a special guest meeting – where you conduct a regular meeting, but also specifically discuss the benefits Toastmasters members receive as they participate in the program.

TOASTMASTERS INTERNATIONAL VISION Toastmasters International empowers people to achieve their full potential and realize their dreams.

Through our member Clubs, people throughout the world can improve their communication and leadership skills, giving them the courage to change.

The following officers will be elected: District Governor; Lt. Governor Education and Training; Lt. Governor Marketing; and Division Governor.

DIVISION GOVERNOR -- Mission/Purpose: Achieves the Mission of the District within the Division, accomplishing District goals in membership building and retention, Club extension, and educational accomplishments. Ensures that each Club realizes its Mission and fulfills its responsibilities to its members. Responsible for achieving Distinguished Division Program goals and for ensuring that Areas and Clubs within the Division achieve Distinguished status. Serves the Division Clubs by providing District support and resources through the Area Governors. Qualifications: A Division Governor shall have served at least six (6) consecutive months as a member of a District Council (e.g., Club President, Vice President Education, Area Governor, District Secretary or District Treasurer).

DISTRICT GOVERNOR -- Mission/Purpose: As the District’s chief executive officer, directs the District in a way which fosters strong Clubs; produces maximum growth in education completions, Clubs and membership; and is consistent with the interests of members of Toastmasters International.

Responsible for motivating the District to achieve Distinguished District. Achieves the Mission of the District in a manner which motivates volunteer leaders and promotes a standard of excellence in all District activities. Qualifications: At the time of taking office, the District Governor shall have served at least six (6) consecutive months as a Club President and at least twelve (12) consecutive months as a Lt. Governor, Division Governor or a combination thereof.

AREA GOVERNOR Mission/Purpose: Provides District contact, support, and assistance to the Club so that it may achieve the Club Mission and fulfill its responsibilities to its members. Helps Clubs by keeping in regular contact with Club Presidents in the Area and by visiting each Club at least twice during the year. Is responsible for achieving Distinguished Area Program goals and for ensuring that each Area Club is a Distinguished Club. Qualifications: Insofar as practicable, an Area Governor should have served as a member of a District Council (e.g., Club President, Vice President Education or District Officer).

DISTRICT PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICER Mission/Purpose: Works under the direction of the District Governor. Helps maintain communication between the District and its members and works to increase public awareness of Toastmasters International through the media. The Public Relations Officer prepares a public relations program designed to achieve goals for membership growth, Club growth and educational achievements in Clubs and achievement in the Distinguished Club Program. Promotes District Conferences and leadership training opportunities within the District. Qualifications: This officer serves in a staff position under the direction of the District Governor and must be a member in good standing of a Toastmasters Club in good standing.

DISTRICT TREASURER Mission/Purpose: Establishes and maintains effective fiscal management of the District. Promotes the growth of Toastmasters by providing sound fiscal guidance to the District. Produces monthly reports reflecting the District’s financial status and ensures that expenditures remain within the budget approved by the District Council. Ensures that the District maintains the financial controls established by Toastmasters International. Qualifications: Should have accounting experience and understand basic bookkeeping practices.

DISTRICT SECRETARY Mission/Purpose: Helps the District function effectively and achieve its Mission by recording and maintaining accurate minutes of District Council, Executive Committee and other meetings. Serves as custodian of the District Administrative Bylaws and policies.

Qualifications: Should be a reliable, prompt, well-organized Toastmaster who can accurately record meeting actions. Should have access to facilities for word processing and reproduction materials.

Fun Weekend Features Awards, Training & Contests

T

he District 47 Fall Conference held Oct. 25 - Oct. 27, 2003, was a rousing success thanks to co-chairs Bill and Sandy LeClere and their talented conference committee. They welcomed more than 200 attendees to the Jacksonville Adams Mark Hotel, including secondyear International Director Frank Connelly and first-year International Director Paul Meunier.

The northeast Florida venue also attracted many first timers, including Johnny Thomas from Division E, who won the first timer’s contest for collecting the most signatures from District officers and other delegates!

The weekend started on Friday night with the Evaluation Contest featuring a test speech by Tricia Hopkins, a visiting Toastmaster from Georgia. The contests were outstanding, with first place going to Division C’s Monica Wofford, second place going to Caren Neile from Division D and third place going to Division G’s Joel Verlin.

Saturday morning was highlighted by nearly a dozen educational workshops, plus a joint presentation by the International Directors on building membership.

The conference concluded with a heated and hilarious Humorous Speech Contest.

Tom Kemper from Division C took first place, David Prince from Division A placed second and James Bussey from Division E took third. Congratulations to EVERYONE who ensured the conference and contests were a success!

A team of Toastmasters paid their very vocal “disrepects” as they fondly roasted Queen for the Night Cathy Epler, District 47’s REALLY outgoing and outspoken 2001 - 2002 District Governor.

DG Eileen Sarris shares a smile with Division C’s Tom Kemper who holds his first place award from the Brenda DeArmond was one of 12 Toastmasters who received DTM medallions at the conference.

The day also included Hall of Fame awards presented by Immediate Past District Governor Cathy Epler to Division and Area Governors who helped District 47 achieve Distinguished District status in 2001-2002. In addition, she issued Governor’s citations to Joel Verlin, Pat Abeling, Jim Miller, Paul Greenberg, Wayne Fogel and Margaret Wan. At lunch, Cathy Epler was roasted in fine District 47 tradition by a team of Toastmasters who gave her a royal tribute, complete with a crown, robe and scepter ... and a few other gifts and gags.
