Earthquake: 8.0 on the “Righter” Scale! By Gloria Grehl, ATM·G
A
naheim, California. It rocked! It glittered. It roared. No, it wasn’t any infamous California earthquake – it was Toastmasters’ 2001 International Convention. I should know, I was there. District 47 probably had more representation on the Grand Stage than any other district in the world, and we made ourselves known! We began our boasting by ending the fiscal Toastmasters year of 2000-2001 as the #2 District out of over 70 districts. An even more amazing phenomenon was that each one of the eight districts in Region 8 had achieved Distinguished status or higher. Each time a Region 8 District was called to collect their award, a blue and white banner proclaiming “Region VIII – 8 FOR 8” was marched to the stage by a jubilant parade of
Toastmasters. The indigenous “8’ers” in the audience chanted “REGION 8! REGION 8!” at the top of their lungs as if it was a major sporting event. District 47 members were equally as loud as District officers Meunier, Epler and Gerbin each took the stage to receive their awards for achievement. Of course we brought our own bright yellow banner proclaiming: “District 47 ROCKS The World!” Our very own Karl Righter, DTM, climbed the stairs twice to shake President McWilliams’ hand and receive both a Top 10 District Newsletter Award and also a Presidential Citation. As if that wasn’t enough, at the International Speech Contest where nine of the best speakers in the world competed for the World Championship of Public Speaking, See “L.A. Story”, Page 2
