S t a n l e y became D i s t r i c t S a t u r d a y began w i t h Governor S t a n l e y , capa b r e a k f a s t , and t h e

ping o f f t h e annual D i s t r i c t 47 Summer Convention.

This year's meeting was h e l d i n t h e Weste r n D i v i s i o n a n d was hosted by St. P e t e r s b u r t Toastmasters Club 2284. And l i k e t h e l a s t convention held i n St. P e t e , i t h a d a b i g band theme, t h i s t i m e " B i g Band '82."

The weekend began w i t h a B i g Band B a r - b e - q u e , w i t h t h e o n l y sour note being the p o s s i b i l i t y

in-coming divisional and a r e a g o v e r n o r s h a d an o p p o r t u n i t y t o t e l l t h o s e . o n hand a b o u t t h e upcoming y e a r .

The m o r n i n g c o n t i n u e d w i t h e x c e l l e n t educat i o n a l s e s s i o n s , a n d was capped o f f a t noon w i t h a luncheon, where o u t g o i n g D i s t r i c t Governor T i l l m a n p r e s e n t e d a "State o f the D i s t r i c t " message, a n d p r e s e n t e d a w a r d s t o s e v e r a l members.

Enthusiasm key to success

O b v i o u s l y , I was d e l i g h t e d a t t h e May D i s t r i c t C o u n c i l Meeting, but beyond p e r s o n a l s a t i s f a c t i o n , I am even more d e l i g h t e d a t t h e continuing s p i r i t of u n i t y and e n t h u s i a s m i n D i s t r i c t 47. T h a t u n i t y was e v i d e n c e d a t t h e May and J u l y m e e t i n g s , and a l l t h e weeks o f p l a n n i n g b e f o r e and since.

I t i s a contagious enthusiasm spread by d e d i c a t e d T o a s t masters w i l l i n g t o serve.

This i sthe f i r s t i s s u e of our administ r a t i o n , and t h e f i r s t of 12 messages from me to you.

We c a n n o n t r e s t on p a s t l a u r a l s o f c o u r s e , b u t must move.

B e f o r e we do though, i t i s f i t t i n g again to congratulate Frank T i l l m a n and h i s admini s t r a t i o n f o r an outstanding year.

As i s r e p o r t e d e l s e where i n t h i s i s s u e o f THE SUNSHINER, F r a n k not o n l y a c h i e v e d Distinguished D i s t r i c t s t a t u s , he a l s o achieved President's Select District, a f i r s t i n the history of D i s t r i c t 47.

F r a n k would be t h e f i r s t to i n s i s t that i t was h i s team t h a t d i d it.

T h a t team i s s t i l l i n p l a c e . Our l i e u t e n ant g o v e n o r s were a l l i m p o r t a n t members o f t h a t c h a m p i o n s h i p team and most o f o u r a r e a govenors were a l s o important contributors.

I f e e l tremendous p r i d e t o have been

chosen t o l e a d s u c h an o u t s t a n d i n g group o f Toastmasters.

But t h e r e s t of us can take p r i d e i n our c o n t r i b u tions as well. I n fact, the contributions of b e t t e r T o a s t m a s t e r c l u b s , w h e t h e r i t be

S p e e c h c r a f t , Youth L e a d e r s h i p , o r any o f our o t h e r programs... or simply emphasising the b a s i c s of Toastmastering, speaking from t h e manual and completing i t . . . t h i s i s what makes D i s t r i c t 47 t h e g r e a t d i s t r i c t it i s .

I n 1982 and'83, we i n tend t o r a i s e o u r s t a n d a r d o f e x c e l l e n c e even higher.

Now t h a t I have been given t h a t opportunity, l e t me t a k e t h i s time t o p r o v i d e some more d e t a i l on my a p p r o a c h of "how t o . " My f i r s t a c t i o n w i l l be t o e s t a b l i s h a s t r o n g , w o r k i n g educat i o n a l committee, headed by Chuck T a y l o r .

The f u n c t i o n o f t h e committee w i l l be t o r e v i e w , recommend and implement e d u c a t i o n a l programs t o a s s i s t t h e membership i n r e a c h i n g t h e i r educational goals.

I t was my o r i g i n a l plan to publish a monthly e d u c a t i o n a l b u l l e t i n , s e p a r a t e from THE SUNSHINER. Howe v e r , I am c u r r e n t l y

working w i t h Jim S t a n l e y t o have s u f f i c i e n t room p r o v i d e d i n e a c h i s s u e o f THE SUNSHINER, t o a l l o w me t o p r o v i d e t h a t same educational platform f o r a l l t h e members i n t h e district.

I w i l l prov i d e a montly c o l l e c t i o n o f "how t o " i d e a s t o b e n e f i t t h e members of t h e d i s t r i c t .

I had a l s o m e n t i o n e d the the beginning of a l i b r a r y of video taped presentations, again d e m o n s t r a t i n g t h e "how t o , " w h i c h c o u l d be borrowed by a member, club, e t c . Each p r e s e n t a t i o n w i l l be g e a r e d f o r an e i g h t - t o - 1 0 m i n u t e t i m e segment, s o t h e y c o u l d be u s e d a s an i n t e g r a l p a r t o f a c l u b program t o b e n e f i t t h e membership.

Obvio u s l y , t h i s c a n o n l y be s t a r t e d t h i s year, be-

c a u s e i t s h o u l d be a n o n - g o i n g program. I f you b e l i e v e you have a presentation that i s e x c e l l e n t and p e r t i n e n t to such a l i b r a r y , l e t Chuck o r m y s e l f know.

I plan t o provide a s i n g l e panal-type p r e s e n t a t i o n , w i t h an agenda p u b l i s h e d t h a t w i l l a l l o w t h e member to a t t e n d those segments o f s p e c i a l i n terest.

I n addition, I p l a n t o have an I d e a F a i r display to allow t h e member t o become familiar with the vari o u s programs and l i t erature available f o r t h e i r u s e from T o a s t Masters I n t e r n a t i o n a l .

I t i s during these s e s s i o n s t h a t I , and t h e members o f t h e e d u c a t i o n a l committee, w i l l c o n t i n u e t o seek t h e i d e a s and needs o f o u r membership.
