2004 REPEATS AS TOP CLUB NICK CARTER SPARKS CONVENTION of the District's second place Club, Orlando Toastmasters Club 1066, which finished with a respectable 2643 points. 1066 has placed second for the last four years after being District 47's top club and Toastmasters International's eighth ranked club in 1969. Club 2004 has an excellent chance to be International's top club this year, and 1066's manual has also been forwarded for consideration as a top ten club.

The Ft. Lauderdale Toastmasters Club 2004 was named District 47's top club for the fourth consecutive year at the gala Awards & Installation Banquet which climaxed the successful Summer Convention in Orlando July 13-15. The presentation was made by outgoing District Governor Charles L. Jones, Jr., ATM, to 2004's representative, Robert E. Dempsey, new Area 4 Governor.

Senior Lt. Governor of District 47, presented a motivational talk during the Saturday morning Educational Session on the subject "Getting Airborne", then provided the fireworks at the evening Awards & Installation Banquet with a dynamic Keynote Address. Also appearing on the exciting educational program was Professor of Communications, Ed Wycoff of Florida Technological University, twice Region VIII Humorous Speech Contest winner, who addressed the Toastmasters on "Better Communications".

AIM HONOR TO SERVE I have always considered it an honor to serve in any elected office because that position, regardless of its relative degree of importance, carries with it the trust and hopes of those who made it possible. As your new District Governor, I express my heartfelt thanks for placing your trust and your hopes in me. It is certainly an honor to serve you once again.

"GETTING AIRBORNE" Seven years ago, shortly after joining Toastmasters, I heard a dynamic presentation from a club member who challenged his audience to "get airborne". I never forgot his enthusiasm for life, or his spirit of helping and motivating others. And he never forgot Toastmasters! Now a successful motivator and Vice President with the Nightengale-Conant Corporation in Chicago, Nick Carter returned to District 47 last month to spark one of the most successful Summer Conventions in memory. His presence was a tremendous motivation to our new District officers and to me. Because of Nick's unselfish contribution to Toastmasters, District 47 is "airborne", and on its way to becoming another Distinguished District.

"SPREAD THE W E A L T H " To spread the spirit and educational value of Toastmasters, we have redesigned and improved the format of "The Sunshiner". Its distinctive yellow color will be noticed internationally, and its balanced mixture of news, educational ideas, and humor will hopefully make the publication the perfect "voice" of a Distinguished District.

Associate Editor Hugh Burgay's idea of a monthly Club Idea Corner is certainly a step in this direction, as is our professed willingness to print as many "letters to the Editor" as space will permit - educational, controversial or otherwise. Our Founder, Dr. Ralph Smedley, once wrote, " A l l speech is for communication, and there can be no possiblity of communication, unless people understand." We must each accept this challenge - to "spread the wealth" of Toastmasters to every member. Realizing this challenge, I have adopted that phrase as my motto for the coming year. Let's work together to "spread the wealth" of Toastmasters.

Senior Educational Lt. Governor Roy Ivey, ATM presented well planned educational programs for the Toastmasters. Emmett Clary, DTM, Lt. Governor for Administration, conducted a lively Area Governor training session for District 47's new Area Governors.

HUMORIST PENDLETON ATTENDS Author and Humorist, Win Pendleton, spoke briefly at the District Governor's Luncheon and was well received.

WEEKLY AWARDS: - Give a Best Speaker, Best Evaluator, and Best Table Topics winner an award he can keep, at a low cost to your treasury - by awarding ribbons to the winners. Your club can have ribbons made, in a variety of colors, for about $8.50 per hundred for seven inch ribbons and $11.00 per hundred for eleven inch ribbons. You can design the ribbon with a TM decal on the front and the type of award, and a tag on the back listing the winners name, date and president's signature.

Calliope Installs A Toastmasters club that meets at 7:30 A.M. every Saturday morning (after Friday night?) and has managed to stay in the same restaurant for over ten years can't be that bad a club after all! District Governor Karl Righter, DTM, found this out July 7th when he installed their new officers on his way home from a Friday night party (Toastmasters of course). The club is a fine one, consistently averaging over 40 members.

Shayne Announces Candidacy (Editor's Note: Past District Governor, Michael G. Shayne, DTM, announced his candidacy for International Director at the recent Region VIII conference in Knoxville, Tennesse, joining immediate Past District Governor, Charles L. Jones, Jr., ATM, in what may prove to be a very exciting contest for the available Directorship. This announcement was also made in September of 1972 at the Region VIII District Governor's Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. The following excerpts are from his formal announcement:) " I am pleased to announce my candidacy for International Director from Region VIII. The response from the District Governors and officers who were present in Atlanta was enthusiastic, as it was in Knoxville. I am sure you will agree that a prime requisite for Director is total dedication and involvement in all of the programs of Toastmasters International. I feel that I have demonstrated these attributes.

One of my main programs as District Governor was "Educate for Leadership". The event was successful, as District 47 was named a President's Distinguished District for the year 1971-1972.

My platform will be simple, yet will be based on the principles of sound business practices, and will incorporate the basic premises of our founder, Dr. Ralph Smedley. I ask for your vote of confidence as District 47's candidate for International Director of Region VIII for the term 1974- 1976."

A PIG DEAL Pathfinders Toastmasters Club No. 2271 (Orlando) had a club party and officers installation that was really a PIG DEAL. The party was an all dav affair at the house of Past President Roy Thomas, with boating, swimming, and games. The guest of honor was a 40 pound pig, which was roasted over a charcoal pit for 12 hours.

Members brought a covered dish and paid $3.50 each, which covered the cost of the pig and drinks. Master chef was President Hugh Burgay, and AVP Richard Dehler was Chief Hog Butcher. After the feast, District Governor Karl Righter installed the officers in an impressive, but informal ceremony.

Evening entertainment was provided by talented club members, professionally emceed by Rosemary Dehler, and ably assisted by the hot piano of DG Karl Righter.

The Pathfinders recommend this type of party as a break from the restaurant routine, with lots of fun, at very low cost.

The Summer Executive Committee Meeting is now history, and we can begin the job of rebuilding Toastmasters in the Eastern Division. My sincere appreciation to everyone in the East, and particularly to the Convention Committee, for making the convention a great one. An extra expression of thanks is in order to District Governor Karl Righter for securing the services of Motivators Nick Carter and Ed Wycoff, who conducted the greatest educational seminar ever in District 47.

First, I want to thank you for your vote of confi dence. I hope to perform as LGND in such a way as to justify your faith in me.

Second, Immediate Past Lt. Gov. Sherley Dunn has been most helpful in my development in Toastmasters and I want to take this opportunity to express my deep and sincere appreciation for his very wise counsel.

The realignment of areas gives everyone plenty of work to accomplish in the next 11 months, especially the Area Governors. Dick Dehler, Area 5 Governor, has two radio stations announcing Toastmasters in the Orlando area. He secured nine minutes of TV time for District Governor Righter and Lt. Governor Middleton during July.

The goals of District 47 waxed so eloquently by DG Karl Righter have rippled north and we in the hinterlands are beginning to move out in our efforts to contribute our share to the "Distinguished District" award which will surely be ours once again.

Vern Barlow, Area 9 Governor has been working hard to get his area back in shape. He held his area, training seminar on June 27. Virgil Brown reports that membership looks dark in Area 11. To build the clubs and to assure they continue meeting, he has arranged for two clubs to meet jointly until membership can be firmly established.

I am certain that with the team of AGs made up of Frank Lohman (7), Guy Ballou (8), Floyd Sewell (12), Roger Peltier (15) and Ed Basdekian (17) gracing the northern division, we will significantly increase club membership and establish new clubs to carry forth the Toastmasters experience.

Larry Kittinger, Area 16 Governor, has the largest club in District 47 and possibly in International in his area. The Winter Park Club has 58 members as of this writing. Areas 5 and 16 conducted a joint area training seminar July 28th. Past District Governor Hugh Burgay and District Governor Karl Righter were the principle speakers. Toastmasters is on the GO in the East!

SELL It is so easy to sell Toastmasters! because Toastmasters sells itself. Is there a person whom you know who does not want to better himself or herself both personally through heightened self-esteem and professionally as manifested in promotions and pay raises? As we learned from Nick Carter at the recent Spring Convention, Toastmasters uniquely can do this!

Last year, as AG of Area 15, I undertook a public relations campaign to promote Toastmasters involving radio and television spots and bumper stickers. I have asked the five AGs to appoint publicity chairmen to carry forth on promotional activities. Recently, I advised DG Karl Righter to consider the possibility of designing, printing and distributing a TM decal which would be placed on the rear window of your automobile. This would certainly get the word about Toastmasters around!

Congratulations to Dr. Al Nowak, 3003, for attaining D.T.M. status. Win Chesley is planning a week-end in Nassau with the Bahamian TMs. A poolside Luau will be just part of the fun. September 14-16 is the date. Join the fun.

If you see pink paper think Area 20. Vicki Wood, AG-20, is printing her correspondence and Area Bulletin in that color. Wonder why? Bill Whann and Tom Booz, 2903, have volunteered to be Area Coordinators for Vicki. Warning, she has set her cap for the Outstanding Area Governor Award, so - Area Governors get set for a race.

As for races, Mike Shayne is making the rounds to be sure that everyone knows he wants to be the next Director from Region 8. His plans for the Winter Convention in Ft. Lauderdale are shaping up with high promises of another top notch event. Plan to attend.

• Club 2727 in West Palm Beach reports through its club bulletin that eleven women in recent weeks have expressed interest in joining Toastmasters.

LUCKY 13 Club bulletins have been coming in profusely this month from all areas except Area 13. For the ensuing year Dick Myers, former Sunshiner Editor, promises a fine bulletin from that area and perhaps even a few club bulletins. He informs me that Lakeland has a per capita of 19 members and that all three clubs in Area 13 are strong and well.

PATRICK HENRY In Area 2 St. Petersburg d u b 2284 and Sunshine City Club 3524 combined to put on a Patrick Henry program for Boy Scout troop 263 in St. Petersburg.

They received fine newspaper coverage in the June 19 issue of the St. Petersburg Independent.

In their June 11th meeting Tampa's Toastmasters 1810 elected John Nelson, President; Educational Vice President, Dave Bond; Administrative Vice President, George Lamereux; Secretary, Dave Culley; Treasurer, Louis Oritz; Sergeant-at-Arms, Gene Schmuckler; and in newly established position Parliamentarian, Darrell Kahl.

Tampa Noonshiners 3909 held their installation of officers banquet on June 27. Elected were Bob Cushman, President; Mick Rindosh, Administrative Vice President; Bill Johannsen, Educational Vice President; Secretary, Gerry Tierney; Treasurer, Harry Lennard; and Sergeantat-Arms, Norman Vik. A fine banquet was had at the Egypt Temple in Tampa.

EDITOR DISCOVERED We have discovered that our new Area 10 Governor, Bob Martin is a long time toastmaster and a former district bulletin editor in the cold north land. We are looking forward to a fine administration from Bob, and perhaps an interesting area bulletin. He is the editor of the Palm City Communicator which is the bulletin of the Fort Myers Club 1702. He will take a 6,000 mile trip through the United States and Canada this summer for six weeks and is leaving toastmaster Nick Arlington in charge of Area 10.

Charlotte County Toastmaster Club 1463 is planning three evening meetings, those evenings are: July 18, August 1, and August 15th. Toastmistresses will be their guests on August 15th. These meetings are set up on a trial basis to see whether Charlotte County should change to an evening format rather than lunchtime.

Past District Governor, Hugh T. Burgay, ATM, apparently tired of being referred to as "past", is now the current president of Pathfinders Toastmasters Club 2271 in Orlando.

• The Earl K. Wood Rotating Humorous Speech Trophy was facetiously originated ten years ago in the Orlando Toastmasters Club 1066 after Earl's evaluator got more laughs than he did. (Earl is the current Orange County Tax Collector, and now you know why there's nothing funny about Mr. Wood!)

A good way to improve your membership is to block off the business area surrounding your club meeting place. Assign an area or territory to each Active Club Member. Borrow a City Directory, all cities have them.

Your Power Company, Telephone Company, many large business, a Public Library or City Hall, can lend you one.

This will give the address geographically and the name and telephone number of the business in each mans' territory.

What do you say in a Toastmasters Club that has the town mayor, city councilman, legislator and county commissioner among its members? The club in question is Past District Governor Mike Shayne's Plantation Club No. 2582. When these four guys are on the program, there's nothing unsaid.

Then have each man make a telephone call or physical contact on each business. Make an appointment with the man in charge and introduce Toastmasters to him.

You'll be surprised how many members you'll pick up by this method, and many businesses will be very interested in what you have to offer. Try it, it will really build up membership. You may be able to start a new club this way. More next month.

Bryan Lewis, EVP and Editor of the bulletin for the Saturday morning Toastmasters Club 2840 in Jacksonville, got so carried away with the July 14th issue, that he left no room for his name. Like speakers, maybe bulletin editors should give an "announced length" each week and strive to hit it within one or two pages.

Past Lt. Governor, Art Rowhedder, DTM, likes his new job as District Parliamentarian. During the dull business session at the July convention, he almost fell asleep twice.

• District Treasurer, Dale Saville, reports that the Apopka Toastmasters' last membership drive "drove" out the remaining six members. Now they have a New Club drive in Apopka.

• Past Senior Lt. Governor, Carleton Smith, DTM, the new District Distinguished Club Plan Chairman, has promised to motivate 20 clubs this year to use TMI's Distinguished Club Plan. "The formula is simple", says Carl, " i f each club now on the plan will work with a nearby club to get them started!"

All of the Western Division's new Area Governors were in attendance at the Summer Convention in Orlando, a feat which no other division could match. They were: Dick Wood, No. 2; Harold Burcham, No. 6; Bob Martin, No. 10; Dick Myers, No. 13 and Dick Anci, No. 18!

This was a great showing; we should really shine in October at the Happy Dolphin! See you there.

He becomes only the 15th in the State.

The Winter Park Toastmasters d u b No. 3674 has more members than all of Area 11, (which has 6 clubs).

The Friday morning club, with 58 members, is thinking of electing its own District Governor.

This is new officer time for many clubs, and those who only elect officers once a year should have rejuvination time. The summer doldrums will soon be over and it will be necessary to institute an active membership campaign.

" A N OUTSTANDING CONVENTION" International Second Vice President John F. Diaz, DTM, called the Summer Executive Committee Meeting "an outstanding convention" and commended Convention Chairman, Morris Middleton, ATM for a superb effort. Morris' committee was. able to provide a free cocktail party on Friday evening to all Toastmasters and guests, as well as a free children's banquet on Saturday afternoon.

Despite the freebies,' the convention ended up in the black. (Audit in next month's issue).

DOLDRUMS?

District 47 is off to a flying start this year, partly as a result of considerable activity during the previous administration in the area of new clubs. Eleven new Toastmasters Clubs were chartered between July 1, 1972 and June 30, 1973. Here are District 47's newest clubs:

Have you found yourself slowly progressing from spring fever to the summer lazies? The doldrums of summer may have arrived but instead of drooping into complacency, let's catch on fire for Toastmasters.

These are critical months and should be approached with enthusiasm and positive thought. Our energy should be devoted to the effective management of our goals and objectives in Toastmastering.

You may be a brand new Toastmaster or one of the old timers . . . . but until we follow an orderly course of action, we will achieve nothing. The time for action is now. If we wait until September, we will already be two months behind.

PLAN Our time is valuable and should not be treated lightly.

Time wasted is lost forever. With this thought in mind we should now, not tomorrow, use our time economically by planning, organizing and controlling our thoughts for 1973-1974.

With this experience behind us we have the momentum in District 47 to start at least 20 new clubs this year, and that is the goal of the Extension Committee.

Planning requires: 1) Setting our objectives 2) Outlining the procedures for accomplishing our objectives

Let's look at the immediate prospects: In the Western Division, Phil Cole of Club 3909 is in the process of organizing a breakfast club in Western Tampa; John Barreto, Past District 29 Governor, is planning a new club in Dunedin; and, Area 18 Governor Dick Anci is busy in Tarpon Springs working with prospective toastmasters. Area Governor Dick Wood, ATM, has excellent prospects with employees of Florida Power in St. Petersburg, and our new District Youth Leadership Chairman Verna Jo Smith reports excellent chances at McDill Air Force Base in Tampa. I will personally be working toward starting a new club in Area 13, probably in Bartow.

Organizing requires: 1) Analyzing the work necessary to accomplish our objectives 2) Arranging and correlating this work Controlling requires: 1) Setting standards with which to compare the effectiveness and efficiency of our planning and organizing.

2) Recognizing that our plan may encounter problems and being able to make adjustments to to overcome any problem.

Your new District Governor Karl Righter, DTM, chartered a new club in Jacksonville Beach July 11th.

Past Lt. Governor Roy Pooley created this club from a Speechcraft Course. The new club, No. 3397, gets the Northern Division off to an early start, and Area 8 Governor Guy Ballou, ATM, flush with the success of his new Navy Jax Club No. 3001, has a gleam in his eye for a Naval Air Station Toastmasters Club.

We can have another outstanding year in District 47 if we will only "MAKE IT HAPPEN."

JACKSONVILLE GAINS NEW CLUB

The Eastern Division has hopes for a new club at Walt Disney World to be sponsored by Orlando Toastmasters Club 1066, with good chances for clubs in Apopka, Winter Garden, and Kissimmee.

In the South the Lt. Governor, Jean Tillman, ATM, has been most successful in new club activity in the past, and is looking for at least one club in each of his areas this year.

Area 12 Governor Floyd Sewell was on hand to install the new officers during the gala installation night Banquet at the new Howard Johnsons Motel on the Atlantic Ocean.

Each Toastmaster in District 47 can help form a new club. Keep your eyes open for prospects and report these to your club extension chairman. Also Toastmasters need to start a new club as one requirement for achieving DTM. Let's spread the word by telling the world about the benefits of the Toastmaster program.
