Innovative Strategies for Building Meaningful Connections It’s true that networking has, in the past, been synonymous with the exchange of business cards at conferences, meetings or unexpected encounters, however networking throughout the past decade, has evolved into so much more than just adding to your contact list. Meaningful networking goes way beyond swapping contact details. While business cards still have a place, true professional growth hinges on cultivating genuine connections that extend past a handshake or virtual introduction. It’s about creating lasting relationships that can offer support, spark innovation and open doors to new opportunities. So how can you ditch the business card mentality and discover how to create truly collaborative business relationships? Here are a few innovative strategies to help you network more effectively:

Personalise Your Connection It doesn’t matter how you may have been introduced to a new contact, whether through a face-to-face event, meeting, or through online networking, a webinar, or even social media, if you want to build a connection, you must follow-up your initial introduction with a personalised message. Don’t send an automatic, generic message from your database. Connect with them through a personalised thank you message or refer to the conversation you had. You can do this in a variety of ways, through email, text or social media messaging, but make it personal. Ensure you are authentic and that they know you paid attention to your conversation. Mention where you met, and a mutual topic of interest, otherwise, you will become just another business card.

Leveraging Social Media to Stay Connected These days we all know social media as a powerful tool for networking, so what we’re suggesting here won’t be new. However, we must reiterate that to network effectively through social media, you must actively engage with your contacts. Join industry groups, participate in relevant discussions, and share valuable content to establish yourself as a thought leader. Share relevant content, participate in discussions and comment on posts. This will enhance your profile as someone who is engaging and knowledgeable. Linkedin is one of the best B2B social platforms for connecting and engaging with industry professionals and can lead to some great opportunities.

As mentioned above, if you are using social media to connect, make sure you personalise your request, to show you are genuinely interested in connecting, and not just increasing your number of followers.

Be Active in Business Growth Events & Communities (online and in person) Joining forums and communities and regularly attending events, either related to your field, or just hanging out with like-minded professionals, can be a great way to network. These platforms or communities allow for deeper discussions and the chance to build ongoing relationships. They can be a hotspot for advice, trends, and opportunities, as well as a way to establish yourself as an expert in your field.

Implement a ‘give first’ approach. When networking, focus on what you can offer instead of what you can get. This might be sharing a resource, offering your skills, or introducing and referring someone to another contact. Genuine acts of kindness make you memorable and can often lead to reciprocal gestures, naturally growing your network.

Actively supporting others can make you a go-to person in your field, which will naturally expand your network. Sharing resources and knowledge shows a willingness to be part of the community which helps to build rapport and strong connections.

Asking questions and showing your interest and willingness to learn from others can also encourage engagement and build mutual respect.

Host Informal Meetups in Groups or 1-to-1 Meetings Even when you are part of a business growth community, relationships grow faster when you meet outside of planned events for small group or 1-to-1 meetings.

As with any type of connection, always follow up with a personal message to confirm you ‘heard’ what was said in the meeting and that you want to continue the relationship.

Create or Join a Mastermind Group Mastermind groups are small, peer-to-peer mentoring groups designed to help members solve their business problems with input from the other group members. Typically, Mastermind Groups have a set number of people, who usually meet once a week, fortnight or month for a designated period of time.

Consistency is key, as regular meetings keep the group focussed and productive and also create strong bonds within the group.

Try to join or form a group with members from various backgrounds. This diversity can lead to innovative ideas and strategies. Collaborative initiatives also often grow from this environment.

Thinking About Business Differently to Achieve Growth In today’s rapidly evolving business landscape, standing still is not an option.

I have always said to my team “if you aren’t growing, then you are going.”

At Ford & Doonan Air Conditioning, our 40-year journey has been an exhilarating one for many reasons, none more so than maintaining growth. I cannot recall a single year when we did not grow our revenue. Sure, some years' growth might only be a couple of percent, while other years we have doubled. Managing the growth is the challenge, and the reason, in my opinion, most businesses in Australia stay small.

The challenge is to find new pathways to growth, but many times there is something else holding back their growth, themselves, or their team.

Traditional strategies may no longer suffice. Instead, innovative thinking and adaptive approaches are crucial. This article explores how thinking differently about business can unlock new opportunities for growth, and to help you get started, here are my top three strategies to consider:

What condition is your Business in?

Is your business prepared for growth with the spare capacity of staff levels, staff skills, stock, capital necessary, and let's not forget, you have the marketing plan done, fully costed and funds available.

Is your business currently delivering a product or service to a level that exceeds what your competitors are delivering? Is this service level good enough to grow from?

Are you, the business owner, really wanting growth? Can you let go and allow others to deliver the service, even when you know you can do it better? Can you not intervene when you hear a function of the business is not being done as you once did it?

What is a typical day for you? Do you work ‘in’ the business or ‘on’ the business?

An owner of a growth business must create regular “Deep Work” time. I refer to those half day blocks of time when you are not being disturbed, and you can really think, plan and create what the business needs.

If you are always busy, have no spare blocks of time, and are wearing too many hats already, then growing should not be your focus right now, instead repair and prepare your business first.

Who is your client and what product or service do they want?

Simple question, but how well do you really know the answers? A common mistake business owners make, including myself, is they believe it will be easier to bring a new product or service into the business and sell this to your existing clients, than it is to expand and grow your existing product or service.

In many ways it is logical, right? You have existing customers you can market and sell to, with a new product or service, so selling costs will be reduced and closing rates should be higher.

This strategy is not wrong, and it has worked for Ford & Doonan at times, but many times, it also hasn’t worked.

From my experience, I believe it is better for the business to focus on what they currently do, find ways to do it better, and/or quicker, and then find more customers like your current ones, to sell it to. This especially applies to a business with a revenue of $1 million or less.

Not only does this lead to growth via referrals, it creates a benchmark of service and quality your competitors cannot easily match, and thus, elevates your company’s reputation as the market leader, leaving those competitors in your wake.

When was the last time you surveyed your customers to find out what they feel you are not delivering well enough? Or what else would make their dealing with your company even easier?

Consider calling (yes, use the phone and talk) to your top ten customers. That is, yourself calling - not a manager or team member. Introduce yourself so they know you are the owner and ask a few questions ... and then shut up for their reply. You may be surprised with what they share with you.

If nothing else, that phone call to them will make them feel special, valued, and will build a level of loyalty.

Summary Growth is challenging, fun, and should be profitable. But keep it simple.

Is your business, and more importantly, are you, prepared for growth?

Never disagree with their comments or try to defend why you are not currently doing their suggestion. Then thank them for their candid response and consider what of their feedback is practical and could be implemented. Of course, some feedback is just impractical or unviable, but much of it, if implemented, will ensure a steady growth trajectory for your business. This is especially true if multiple clients say the same thing. (Act on these ones!)

How to Build an A-List Team

Don’t hire B or C Players. If only it were that simple.

Imagine entering your office every day and being greeted by a skilled team genuinely excited about solving problems and driving your business forward.

That’s the result of having a team of A-players.

“A-players solve problems proactively and effectively. B-players follow instructions, and C-players create problems. Making a full commitment to having a team of A-players is the best business decision you could make.” ~ Paul Claessen.

The challenge is to attract these A-Players, then manage and lead them well.

Having a team of A-players requires a total commitment from you, the business owner. Recruiting employees in a tight labour market is one of the most challenging tasks I help clients with. Once you secure your A-player talent, ensuring they meet the role's needs is the next task at hand. Implementing a specific, effective management system is an excellent way to invest in your A-players.

Equally importantly, it’s important to manage your A-Players so they know appropriate or required behaviours in your business.

Outstanding leadership goes a long way, and leading A-players well, will reward you with their discretionary effort. As an employer of an A-player, it’s on you to ensure that your leadership warrants their effort. A-players are in demand; other companies will reward them with money, opportunities or ‘perks’ of any description. You can maintain their loyalty with great leadership. There are five essential practices of great leadership: Model the way - Set the example by aligning your actions with company values.

Inspire a Shared Vision - Enlist others in a common vision, focus on, and share a future that inspires them.

A Stocktake of the WA Economy

The Reserve Bank declined to lower interest rates at its meeting in August.

This suggests that, on balance, the bank remains more concerned with the stickiness of inflation than with a slowing economy. The Bank looks at aggregate Australian data which averages growth over all states and territories. The level of interest rates can have quite different consequences on a weak economy than a strong one. By most measures, WA is ahead of every other state.

I wrote about the relative strength of the WA labour market in the last article.

The June update shows unemployment remains historically low at around 3.8 per cent, below the national average with participation close to 70 per cent, higher than every other state. High participation can be seen as a vote of confidence in the economy. People become discouraged and participation falls when economic conditions weaken.

Retail trade grew by 4.3 per cent in the 12 months to June, faster than every other state and territory and well above the national average of 2.9 per cent.

Spending on essential goods grew by 4.7 per cent over the year while household goods, supported by strong net interstate and overseas migration, rose by a very solid 8.6 per cent. The only flat spot was in footwear and clothing, which was down 0.6 per cent.

Nationally, approvals for new dwellings declined by 2.6 per cent over the year with double digit falls in NSW and VIC. In WA however, approvals of houses and attached dwellings grew by just under 80 per cent. There were over 17,000 new dwellings approved over the past 12 months at a value of over $8 billion.

Although more dwellings are needed before the market balances out.

Of course, approved dwellings need to be built. Finance for the construction of dwellings by owner-occupiers, a leading indicator of home building commencements, grew by 72 per cent in the 12 months to June. And by 16 per cent for the purchase of already completed dwellings. The number of loan approvals for first-time home buyers fell by around 7 per cent, but the value increased by over 9 per cent, reflecting the rising cost of new dwellings. An interesting statistic is the growth in the first home buyer investor. This category purchases or builds their first home as an investment property.

While their share of the market remains relatively small, it has been growing steadily.

Building completions have been steadily rising in trend terms, since the low point in 2017. Over 17,500 new dwellings were completed in the 12 months to March. This indicates the construction pipeline, from approval by the local authorities to commencing construction to finally moving in, is flowing along smoothly for most people.

In all, the WA economy remains solid. This means that, with the rest of Australia slowing, when the RBA does cut rates, the WA economy will be better placed than most to take advantage of them.

For me, I find that if it is scheduled and I do not have to think too much it will happen.

2. Social Connection Staying connected with friends and family is vital; social engagement supports cognitive health. Something to look forward to, to prepare for and to surround yourself with like-minded people who lift you up. I’m writing a book about longevity, interviewing people over 90 who are living well, mentally and physically. I can assure you that the 102-year-old I met last week in Mauritius is only surrounding herself with people who give her life, not those who suck life out of her. Are there any people in your life who drain you? Spend less, or no, time, with them. I am sure you know people who leave you with a spring in your step and motivation? Spend more time with them - your mental health and longevity will thank you for it!

3. Brain Games and Puzzles - Learn Something New that Brings Joy Challenge your mind with crosswords, Sudoku and brain teasers to build cognitive reserve. We love a game of Wordle and recently my daughter taught me how to play solitaire on the plane, so I have a new brain game to enjoy.

Engage in lifelong learning; acquire new skills or hobbies to stimulate neural connections. I am learning Arabic and Spanish now. It is very frustrating, but I persevere to get the dopamine from the sound on Duolingo and the satisfaction of being able to recognise words. Next step is speaking, but even though I have taught all over the world, I am still shy to speak in foreign languages, unless I am ordering coffee. Sometimes you need to feel the fear but do it anyway, for everyone’s benefit. Learning a musical instrument is on the list every January 1st. I figure I have another 50 years to master one, but the sooner I start, the better I will be.

Participate in activities that bring joy and mental stimulation, to reduce stress and promote cognitive well-being through mindfulness practices. As well as being a biohacker, I am a poet.

I run mindfulness creative writing groups, often around cultivating calm. I ‘write to breathe’ and find that daily meditation is essential to prevent grumpiness. Oh, and coffee. But only before 3, or I won’t sleep well, which is so important; adequate rest supports brain health and cognitive function. I used to be a terrible sleeper, but since adopting Longevity Lab sleep protocols, I am a wonderful sleeper, which is good for everyone around me too.

Eating well and staying hydrated, together with incorporating these simple brain hacks into your daily routine, will help reduce the risk of dementia and keep your mind sharp, healthy and resilient. Your future self will thank you!

With our clients, we split work into two categories - projects and day-to-day work. As entrepreneurs, focusing on project work is key to growing your organization, but day-to-day admin can often get in the way. Switching between tasks is inefficient and multitasking can lead to burnout. One Wealth Secret That Can Make You Rich I’m often asked if there are secrets to getting rich. While not exactly secrets, there are crucial factors that can change everything. One key factor is whether you have a scarcity mindset or an abundance mindset.

Let me illustrate this with a story. After leaving the military, my first job was cleaning offices—vacuum on my back and feather duster in hand. I was earning $10 per hour for nighttime work, 6-7 hours per night. It wasn’t much, but it was a job.

One morning, after a shift, I was having coffee in a South Perth café when I overheard a conversation about a cleaning business. The men realised I was listening and invited me into their discussion. One of them, thinking I was a cleaning business owner based on my attire, offered to buy any contracts I had for 50% of their annual value.

I didn’t understand what he meant, but he quickly recognised his mistake.

Instead of walking away, he offered me a chance to make real money. He explained that if I went door knocking, followed his quoting rules, and secured contracts, he would buy them from me for 50% of their value. I agreed and spent an hour learning from him.

I called my wife, Cathie, from a phone box (no mobile phones back then) to let her know I was staying out to give this a try. On my first day, I signed a contract for $6,000. I went to his office and received $3,000. I went from earning $60 a night to $3,000 a day. Over that year, I made just over $500,000.

However, around the 12-month mark, I thought to myself, “This guy will run out of money, staff, or interest,” so I decided to quit.

What I learned was that I had a scarcity mindset. If I had an abundance mindset, I would have realised there were countless other cleaning businesses like his across Australia, ready to offer the same opportunity.

Sometimes we only discover our scarcity mindset when someone shows us a different perspective.

When that happens, our world can change dramatically. The real question is, are you ready for that change?

District32 Supports Charlie’s Hope Charlie, a 13-year-old diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) in November 2017, faces a progressive and ultimately fatal condition due to the absence of dystrophin protein. DMD gradually weakens every muscle in his body, including those vital for breathing and heart function, with an average life expectancy of 26 years. Additionally, Charlie deals with visual challenges, including a second cataract and Persistent Hyper-plastic Primary Vitreous (PHPV), which severely impairs vision in one eye.

Despite these challenges, Charlie's family is committed to raising awareness about DMD and PHPV through their initiative, Charlie’s Hope.
