THE DISTRICT32 ‘PAY IT FORWARD’ INITIATIVE IS BACK! The District32 Pay it Forward Initiative prompts us to put our existing spending through the network. Often, we forget that we belong in the broader network and give our jobs (and spend) to random businesses found on Google.

For example, we may need our lawns mowed, flights booked, or paving fixed. Or we might need a new logo, advertising assistance or a BAS agent. The Pay it Forward Initiative prompts us to think about what we'll spend money on and put this through the network to support other District32 Members.

WHY IS ESTABLISHING A CONNECTION SO CRITICAL FOR BUSINESS LEADERS TODAY? A connection is an interaction of depth and substance between two or more people, where a genuine bond is formed. That would seem to imply a high level of trust and respect is required, which perhaps we might expect would take significant time to develop.

However, an article by leading social psychologist Amy Cuddy, and communications strategist John Neffinger, suggests that connection in leadership can happen quickly. In their article Connect, Then Lead they discuss the importance of warmth and strength when it comes to leaders achieving high levels of productivity within their teams. In fact, their research shows that these two traits alone account for 90% of the positive or negative impressions we form when first interacting with business leaders.

And, perhaps surprisingly, they found that warmth is more influential than strength when forming a connection, which can even be acknowledged during the first meeting. As humans, we all want deeper, more authentic connection, so when we meet someone who portrays warmth and is willing to listen, we embrace them with trust and respect early in the interaction.

Of course, communication is so much more than language.

A warm vocal tone and an authentic smile go a long way to creating a bond. Add to that a little empathy and attentive listening skills, and you are well on your way to building a connection in a short period of time. We all have the ability and ‘gut feeling’ to know when someone is acting in a genuine way and with good intention – if we allow ourselves to trust in that feeling. This is a basic premise, not just for business, but will enhance all interactions and relationships we encounter in life. So, as a leader, we know creating a connection with our team will increase productivity but where else in business does connection have an impact?

Connect then refer: 85% of new business is based on ‘word of mouth’ referrals.

Connection establishes a culture of trust within our network, customers, and B2B partners who will, in turn, feel confident to refer our services and products on to others.

Connect then engage: Regardless of how positive the referral or lead is from a trusted partner, if we do not engage with warmth with the potential new customer, do you think they will even consider working with us?

Connect then market: When it comes to marketing your services or products, it’s commonly thought that new customers require an average of 8 ‘touchpoints’ before a connection is strong enough to cultivate a sale.

A touchpoint is a way of interacting with potential customers and includes your website, printed media, social media, and direct conversation either meeting face to face or via phone. The number of touchpoints required can vary significantly in our experience, but still, each of the touchpoints needs to first establish, and then build the connection with the potential customer or collaboration.

Connect then sell: It’s now understood that people don’t buy products and services – they buy you!

Customers can buy products that solve their problems from anywhere and from anyone, but they choose your business because of the connection they feel they have made with you.

Connect then partner: Collaboration is key in today’s business world. Working with other businesses gives us an opportunity to work together to achieve common goals, generate exciting new ideas and generally improve productivity. These benefits are only possible if a strong connection is formed.

Your team and why culture is everything Culture is everything, I have often said in life even before I stared a business that your job is only as good as the company you work for, the team you work with, and the clients you serve.

What do I mean by this?

It is everything, the right team, the right systems, the right service offering, and the constant drive to be better in everything we do than the day before.

Put simply there are no shortcuts, never leave things

Without your team you cannot perform, without your team you cannot grow, and without your team you will burn yourself out trying to please everyone.

During our growth and development, it is the culture that I have worked hardest to protect.

There have been challenges and I have had to make some hard decisions, some of which have negated our growth or caused issue, and each time I have learnt and developed personally to be a better leader than the day before.

My most valuable learning over the last 4 years has been to empower your team.

Empower them to make decisions, to take ownership, and give them the freedom to fail and learn.

This enables true growth in your team, and after all they are adults young and old, just give them a place to collaborate, share and grow.

Build a better system, then build it some more One of my favourite acronyms is S.Y.S.T.E.M.

It stands for save yourself some time effort money – which is why we are always working on our systems and processes.

Building, working from and constantly working on, your systems and processes enables you to let go, step back and empower your team.

It creates efficiency, consistency, a quality and standard, and the ability to scale your business.

Always be working on the improvement of your systems.

Share the wealth Let me start by saying I never set out to build a team, but when I did my first approach has always been to share the wealth.

There are three areas that I am speaking of when I say, share the wealth. The mind, the heart, and the pocket.

From the moment we are born we live to learn and grow.

When we are developing our knowledge, when we have heartfelt alignment with the work we are doing, and when we never have to worry about money; this is when we perform at our best.

As a leader the best thing you can do is to make sure these areas are full and taken care of, because this enables your team to do their very best work whilst in your care.

NETWORKING IS YOUR MARKETING How you conduct one-on-one meetings IS your marketing

Business networking involves maintaining positive relationships with colleagues, customers, leads, and other professionals in your industry.

There's no going around it; if you're a business owner, you need to spend time and effort networking. Networking is also a vital part of your marketing.

Keep in mind that how you show up is your marketing.

Dictionary.com defines marketing as "the action or business of promoting and selling products or services, including market research and advertising." In other words, it's letting people know how you can help and that you care about solving their problems and pain points. You can do this through networking and how you communicate with the people in your network.

Here are key points to remember when thinking about networking and marketing:

Networking IS your marketing We can all agree that 85% of all business comes through referrals. That’s because our personal branding and how we show up and deliver IS our marketing. If 85% comes from referrals, then surely our most robust funnels must be those for networking and referrals.

Consistency is key with networking.

How you follow up and communicate with other people IS your marketing After you meet new contacts at events, continue to reach out to them.

Are you polite?

Do you respect other people's time?

After meeting a prospect or someone in your network, how you follow up and communicate with them is part of your marketing.

Establishing professional relationships and connecting with other people can be done by setting one-on-one meetings. For instance, after meeting an industry expert at a workshop, set an appointment with them to continue to keep in touch.

How you conduct yourself during the meeting is also your marketing. Make sure to ask yourself, are you listening or pitching? There is a time and a place for everything.

How you help people afterwards IS your marketing Check-in with former colleagues and invite them for lunch and coffee. Maybe you saw them again at a conference connected via LinkedIn. Reach out and see if you can set a personal meeting with them to build and strengthen your professional relationship. Show the people you meet that you sincerely care about them and their problems.

How you actively nurture your database and contacts to develop your relationships IS your marketing Building a robust professional network is a big part of your marketing.

Growing your contact list and nurturing this list to develop business relationships is also part of your marketing. Networking also allows you to receive leads on professional opportunities and potential customers and, ultimately, achieve your business goals.

2. Pitching Another critical part of professional networking involves pitching yourself. A pitch is a valuable way to market yourself and your business. While it can be awkward and uncomfortable to "sell" yourself, you can make it easier by preparing your elevator pitch ahead of time.

When you set up a meeting or get in touch with someone from your network, keep it professional and business-like.

Remember, the person you're meeting with is also there for the same reason - to see how you can help each other professionally.

There are several ways to build your business network effectively and grow your marketing efforts.

1. Attend Network Events Industry-specific seminars, trade shows, conferences, and workshops are networking events. Typically, people who attend these events are from the same or closely-related industry.

Meeting and conversing with other attendees during networking events helps you grow your business network.

Within a business or company, there can also be internal events to encourage employees to network with each other. Events such as company mixers and corporate retreats allow you to meet other colleagues that you may not interact with regularly and add them to your network.

For example, your LinkedIn profile should not be the same as your Facebook profile.

People are on LinkedIn to grow and build their professional networks and learn from industry experts, not to read about the new restaurant you ate in last weekend. Take note that you are also marketing through your profile. Keep it cordial and professional.

An elevator pitch introduces who you are, your business or position, and what you have to offer. It is usually 30 to 40 seconds long and introduces yourself and what's unique about your business clearly and concisely. The goal is to quickly explain your unique value proposition and leave a good impression for more opportunities in the future.

Networking is essential to putting yourself and your business on other people's radars. This is essentially what marketing is all about. Even if you network as an individual, you are also marketing the organization you represent.

Keep the above points in mind while growing your professional network, and ultimately, continue marketing your business.

3. Professionalism Of course, it's essential to always keep networking professional. Yes, you can form authentic friendships while networking, but your primary goal is to network and market for your business.

1.Remember, nothing will be perfect Don’t wait for perfection – just start and make changes as your business or you market requires.

2. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes Mistakes are a business owners’ best learning opportunity. Take your mistakes and learn from them.

3. Always remember that not making a decision is still making a decision Inaction is still an action. It is choosing not to choose – and this can be a problem for a few reasons.

If you are indecisive, then you give time for your competitor to jump ahead of you, and you may also risk missing out on new opportunities and a chance to grow the business if you remain indecisive.

Another issue can be that your mind gets a bit cluttered and overwhelmed.

Indecision means you are essentially handing the power to others to decide for you.

4. Trust yourself BUT also use trusted advisors when needed The right advice is invaluable.

Being able to talk with a trusted contact, whether that be another business owner, a friend, a mentor – it means you can talk through any business concerns, thrash out issues or decisions to make, or simply have a sounding board to let out some feelings or worries.

Make sure you choose the right person as not everyonebe it friends or family will understand what you are going through.

5. Remember that no one else in the business will work as hard as you – and that’s ok Just make sure you find staff who believe in you and your vision. While employees might not have the same attachment to the business that you do, many employees if treated right, will give their all to their role.

6. Treat those staff fairly So, it is important to treat your staff and your contractors fairly. Set out clear job descriptions and KPI’s, pay them fairly, accommodate their flexible working requests where possible, and treat them as the talent they are.

7. Watch your cashflow Always put your tax and super obligations away weekly or monthly so that you never owe $$$ to the government.

And look to set up and manage a good cashflow system, seek advice from a trusted accountant or experienced advisor if needed.

8. Earn the trust of clients/customers and show loyalty to them

‘Social capital’ can be described as the networks and relationships that exist within companies. It is a resource that is slowly being recognised as being critical to organisational success, however many companies still don’t invest in it.

Why is social capital important?

Studies in social psychology show us that our brain prioritises warmth over competence.

This happens subconsciously, so no matter how much we as leaders focus on showing our employees or stakeholders how competent we are or how good our business is, the first question they are subconsciously asking is “do I like this person?”.

If the answer is yes, then they are more likely to engage with us. If the answer is no, they are

WA ECONOMY – OUTLOOK The WA economy has been a tough environment for small to medium businesses for the past eight years. In fact, it has been operating well below potential since the heady days of the mining investment boom where growth averaged around 5.5 per cent per year. Since 2014, the economy has grown by an average of 1.25 per cent per annum and the outlook from most forecasters expects this to continue to at least the mid-2020s. In fact, growth in WA state final demand (SFD) – the domestic economy excluding exports – declined in 5 out of the 8 years since 2014. Then, after all this, businesses were hit by the impacts of COVID, followed by rising inflation and rising interest rates.

The government and the Reserve Bank (RBA) responded aggressively to the pandemic, providing unprecedented stimulus and ultra-low interest rates. These measures had the desired effect and supported households and businesses through the pandemic. SFD fell by 11.6 per cent over the year to June 2020 but rebounded strongly by 14.6 per cent in June 2021 as consumers splashed out after 12 months of restraint. From December 2019 to June this year, the economy has grown by 9.6 per cent.

But surprisingly, SFD remains around 7.5 per cent lower than its peak in September 2012.

The latest National Accounts released on Wednesday show governments and households have continued to spend up following the pandemicinduced restraint. Household consumption rose by nearly 6 per cent in June 2022, as consumers began buying new clothes and footwear, driving and travelling more, and eating out.

Unfortunately, with this renewed spending has come rising inflation. The whole world is spending money again, which has stretched supply chains to breaking point, pushing up prices across the globe. For many consumers and businesses, inflation at these levels would be a distant memory. We must go back to 1990 to find inflation higher than it is today in WA. With higher inflation come higher interest rates. The RBA has an inflation target of between 2 and 3 percent, on average, over the medium term. This is seen as the range that maintains economic stability. Nationally, inflation was 6.1 per cent higher than a year ago and 7.4 per cent higher in WA.

The RBA has done the only thing it can and acted aggressively in raising interest rates by a total of 2.25 percentage points since April, with more rises expected. This is the first time the RBA has lifted rates since November 2010. The fear is that once inflation becomes entrenched, it is much hard to eradicate.

So, for the WA business community, the recent strong consumer spending growth will not last. Growth must slow to bring prices back to the 2 to 3 per cent target. The hope is the RBA can execute a soft landing and put the economy back on a sustainable path to prosperity. What is the most important thing I could suggest businesses do to stay ahead? Focus on productivity.
