Elevator Pitch for Successful Networking We've all been there; been introduced to someone at a networking event and your mind goes blank as they ask, “so what do you do?”

Scrambling for words doesn’t leave a great first impression. That’s why a wellcrafted elevator pitch is one of the crucial elements of successful networking; it’s a compelling way to introduce yourself, and your business products and services.

When you’re meeting someone new, you never know what opportunities might present themselves, so you must ensure they walk away knowing what problem you solve, who you solve it for, and why you are different from your competitors. And you probably need to do it in less than 30 seconds! That’s why a well-prepared introduction is key.

There’s a fine line to getting your pitch right. I have experimented with several different versions that have adapted over time.

It doesn’t need to be set in stone, your pitch can be quite fluid and change, depending on the environment. Being invited to stand and give your ’30 second pitch’, for example, may be different to introducing yourself in a more casual setting. You certainly don’t want a casual introduction to sound forced and salesy; the main elements will be the same, but the presentation may change.

Importantly though, whenever you are heading to a networking event, and particularly when you are part of a networking community, you should have your wellprepared and practised elevator pitch ready to spark interest in you and your business.

Why is a compelling introduction important?

First Impressions Matter: Whether you are at a regular networking event as part of a business growth community or lining up for coffee, you may be only one conversation away from a huge opportunity for your business.

You may only have a few minutes (or less) of conversation, so a memorable elevator pitch ensures you present yourself confidently, leaving a strong first impression.

Clarity is key: Crafting an elevator pitch forces you to focus your professional offerings into a few key points. This clarity can help you articulate your value proposition more effectively. Remember that people are busy and regular event attendees are meeting a lot of people. Your pitch should be clear, concise and hold their attention. It should tell them who you are, what you do, and the value you bring.

Spark Conversation: A good pitch isn't a monologue. It's a springboard for conversation. A compelling pitch will pique others’ interest and get them to ask questions, which will help you create rapport. When your pitch resonates with others, it can pave the way for deeper conversations and more meaningful connections that can build stronger relationships.

Builds Confidence: Knowing you have a well-crafted pitch can boost your confidence in multiple networking situations, helping you to feel comfortable to engage with others and leave a lasting impression.

Helps you to Stand Out: Your well-crafted elevator pitch can help you differentiate yourself from your competition by highlighting what makes you unique. This strategic differentiation is crucial in capturing attention and opening doors to new opportunities, ensuring your value proposition is both memorable and compelling.

Efficient Communication: Networking events can be hectic. An elevator pitch allows you to convey your message quickly and effectively, maximising your time and that of your listener.

Crucially, you never know where a connection might lead and the opportunities that could be waiting for you from any interaction. Creating a confident first impression, and clarity around your unique selling point, will give you a higher chance of taking advantage of those opportunities.

Crafting Your Perfect Pitch While summing up everything you do, who you do it for, and why you can do it better than others may seem impossible in a 30 second pitch, I can assure you it isn’t. It may take some time and effort, but with trial and error, you will find the words that work for you.

So what elements are important in your introduction? There are plenty of help out there for crafting pitches, but here are the crucial points I use for my elevator pitch: Start with a hook that leaves them in no doubt about what you do This is a bit like a headline that grabs the attention and interest of your audience. A compelling opening sentence will give them a reason to listen but also tells them exactly what problem you solve. Remember, you only have a short amount of time, so make sure there is clarity. Of course, this will depend on the environment, as mentioned previously, a casual conversation will need a different approach to an introductory standing pitch.

Highlight your value At this point, you should have clarified the problem you solve, but why should they choose you? And what skills or experience do you have to set you apart from the competition? An effective elevator pitch will combine emotion and excitement with logic to show why they should choose you for the solution they are looking for. Always convey enthusiasm and passion for what you do to keep them engaged.

Keep it concise and clear Remember, you only have 30-60 seconds to get your point across, so there’s no room for waffle. You must be strategic and make every word count. It must also be clear. If you confuse your audience in any way, they will immediately switch off.

Never leave them wondering who you are or how to contact you This can sometimes be overlooked in a short pitch full of enthusiasm. What a tragedy it would be they were to walk away thinking how great your solution is for their problem, but they have no idea to who you are or how to contact you.

You want your elevator pitch to roll off your tongue, almost without having to think about it. You also want to easily adapt your pitch for a variety of situations. The only way to do this is to know it inside out - rehearse your pitch until it feels natural, using words that you regularly use. If you have written a pitch that uses words that don’t work for you, or doesn’t resonate easily with you, it will take longer to become automatic. Regularly practice saying it out loud. …. And remember, the best pitches go through many revisions and adaptations until you discover what truly works for you.

An elevator pitch is a key tool in supporting your networking success. It's not just about selling yourself or your ideas; it's about opening doors to new opportunities and building lasting relationships. A great pitch will equip you with the ability to make a strong impact in a variety of networking situations, ensuring that you're remembered for all the right reasons.

Particularly in a business growth community, like District32, investing time in a strong elevator pitch, will prepare you to seize networking opportunities and make those all-important connections that can lead you to build a better business.

Are You Leading the Way? When you step into a leadership role, you become someone who is in the position of influencing others. While much has been written about leadership, there is a difference between simply understanding leadership and being a leader. In my experience, there are four steps (the "4 L's") that are critical to developing a simple, yet effective leadership process in your business.

Step 1 - Luminate All great leaders from Sir Richard Branson to Sam Walton have had a clear vision of what they wanted to achieve. I interact with several business owners every day, and one of the common problems they face, is their lack of vision. If they had one initially, it's become cloudy or is gone all together. For example, upon starting a business, one business owner is focused on how to get their first client, while another business owner is thinking about how to find their first 100 clients. As a business owner, think big, dream big and define your vision as clearly as you can.

Step 2 - Liberate To realise your vision, you must be excited about it. It's always amazing to see how some people are consistently energised at a higher level than others. One concept related to this idea is to determine what "zone" you're in. This is an area studied extensively by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, a psychology professor at the University of Chicago. Mihaly defines the three zones as: The Flow Zone, The Drone Zone and The Panic Zone.

In the Flow Zone, individuals consistently perform at peak level. I'm sure you can think of at least one person you know who is always in this zone. They are amazing to watch, and they attract the right people and the right opportunities into their lives that propel them even further.

In the Drone Zone, nothing seems to go right. People get down and often feel like they're "stuck in a rut." Most of us have been there, and you may even be there now, or know someone who is.

In the Panic Zone, people lose confidence and hope. They may resort to blame, denial and excuses, or as we say in my coaching practice, "below the Point of Power behaviour." These stuck people may make hasty decisions out of desperation, that deviate from a proven plan, only making matters worse.

We all move in and out of zones, but clearly, we want to be energised in the Flow Zone as much as possible. To do this, we need to think positively, take control of our own destiny, focus our attention on the immediate challenge before us and measure our performance against pre-determined goals.

Once you are energised, you need to liberate your team. A positive attitude is vital - and it's contagious. As your enthusiasm and positive energy spread, your team will be likely to follow, and together, you can rise to new levels of success.

Step 3 - Leverage You and your team need the right tools and resources to succeed. This may include equipment, training, infrastructure or knowledge; resources you and your team can turn to for the right information. Take risks and leverage your team to take risks (within defined boundaries). The consequences of inaction far outweigh the consequences of any initial risk. Leaders understand they, or their team, will sometimes make mistakes. But mistakes are incubators for great success. Leaders understand how they must evolve, or their plans, programs and businesses will inevitably dissolve.

Step 4 - Lead by Example As a business owner, you are the personification of your business vision. For example, you can't declare the importance of customer contact and then spend all your time hiding in your office. You need to walk the talk and instil your passion and energy within everyone you meet. One of my colleagues, John Maxwell, states, "If you think you're leading and no one is following you, then you're only taking a walk." Certainly, this is true in the business world. If you find yourself 'only taking a walk,' you're likely headed for some difficult times ahead.

Leadership is not a choice; in business, it's an obligation. Take the time to check yourself against the 4 steps above, then lead yourself to personal improvement and lead your team to greatness.

How to Write a Proposal that Wins the Business You don’t know me, and you’ve never heard of my company. But for some reason, best known to your personal assistant, you agreed to meet with me in a sales call.

I arrive, and you show me into your office. I immediately begin the conversation by introducing myself and my company.

As I drone on, metaphorically beating my chest, telling you about our awesome products, your attention starts to wander. Your parents are coming over for dinner and you need to pick up a cooked chook. Oh, and you must remember to ring your colleague and tell them a job well done for helping with that urgent order.

Now, imagine you are on an evaluation panel, reviewing tenders for that important thing you are buying; about $4 million worth of work and services over the next 2 years for a mission-critical project you are embarking on. It is not without risk, and you want the safest pair of hands delivering it. So, you pick up the fattest tender document and begin reading. The company introduces themselves and tells you how good they are, what their special ingredient is, and how many other companies have enjoyed working with them. How big they are, and so on.

What is your reaction? Well, speaking as someone who has evaluated hundreds of tenders just like that, I can tell you what usually happens. The readers’ eyes glaze over, they get to the bottom of the page and turn to the next without making a single positive observation or remembering what they read, and then they score most criterion 5/9 (reasonably confident the tenderer understands the requirements and can deliver).

You just failed to sell yourself and lost the tender. You are told you are too expensive, and that is why you lost.

No. You lost because nobody picked up how well you are going to deliver the goods/services.

Why? Because the decision-making part of the brain is self-centred. It is so not interested in what you have to say about yourself. It’s scanning for the bit about itself. How the tenderer is going to solve the problem you have, trouble and risk-free.

You failed to engage the reader. You talked in generic terms, and didn’t offer a single, compelling reason why you are different, other than to say, “we are different”.

A proposal/tender is just like a sales conversation. Just as you don’t talk about yourself in a sales conversation, you don’t talk about yourself in your proposal.

You need to grab their attention. Remembering the decision-making part of the brain is self-centred, you talk about them. Specifically, how well you understand their problem, and how, exactly, you are going to solve it.

Start with their problem. If you don’t know what it is, you have failed before you started. If you are submitting a proposal following a sales call, that meeting should have been an inquisitive conversation, unpacking what they think they want, why, and how it will help them achieve their goals.

If you are submitting a tender in response to a formal request, then the problem should be articulated in the tender documents. Or, at least, the goals and objectives of the tendering process.

Restate their problem in your words.

Then propose some options for a solution, where you settle on your recommendation. Discuss the pros and cons of each solution and explain why your recommendation is the best option. Unpack the risks of your solution and discuss how you intend to address and mitigate them.

Provide a price, in detail, being transparent in what and how you will be charging them.

Then, and only then, are you allowed to talk about yourself, but only to demonstrate your experience, capacity and capability to perform this contract and help them achieve their goals.

It really is that simple. And since almost nobody writes a proposal that way, you will be way in front.

This One Is for Men Over 40 (But It’s Not Just the Men)

Chances are you’re wondering how you got to this age already. You might be wondering if you are really that old. Good news is, if you’ve got kids, you can definitely stop doubting. They love telling us how old we are.

So what now?

A lot of guys start asking...

“Is this all there is?” We grow up with the belief that by the age of 40-50, we should have conquered the world and now be full of wisdom that everybody wants to hear.

The reality is, many of us start wondering what life was all about at this age.

What now? Where is the fulfilment? Where is the happiness I was promised?

Whether it’s been an incredibly “successful” life or one that feels the opposite, we are all men, and have the same feelings, emotions and desire to leave a legacy.

So how do you do that?

As with the rest of life, there is no simple answer. But here are a few topics to think about.

What would you really (deep down, honestly) want to do? Fulfilment and joy don’t come from playing golf all day or sipping on cocktails on a beach in Fiji (well, not for most of us).

True joy and fulfilment is about striving for something, serving people and contributing in a great way. How would you like to do that? (Read the last question again - slowly).

Here is an incredibly small list of topics to consider: How is your physical health? At this age, this is very important. It can get better, and you can live a healthy life. Don’t be a statistic; be a change maker. This is when the gym, nature and the food we eat become even more important than ever.

What state are your relationships in? I know guys on absolutely every spectrum here. Remember, Tomorrow is Not Today. When things are bad, it can often feel like the rest of your life will be a nightmare, but take it from experience, things can be better than ever, and yes it does take time.

Although we have hit a milestone in age, we still have time.

If things are going well. Double down on the effort as life happens to all of us. Again, this can be the best part of life, whether with family, friends, business relationships or anything else.

What legacy do you want to leave? That question is 100% up to you. Were you ever told to leave things in a better way than you found them? This is where you can leave a great legacy, and you can choose that legacy, as well as the beneficiaries: family, a certain group of people, an industry, a specific geographic location, a people group, a species of animal or something else of your choosing.

Who are you and what do you want to be remembered for?

It’s not too late, in fact, right now is the best time, because you have the experience, skills, understanding and wisdom like never before.

The WisDumb Way WisDumb: To honour what you’ve learned and are competent in, while being acutely aware of how little you actually DO know.

As most of us know, a really important aspect of networking is building relationships, not trying to sell our service/product the minute we meet someone new. To achieve this, there are a number of barriers to navigate our way through, and as you’ll see, when you do, magic can and does happen.

Three common barriers are Arrogance (I’m superior), Dogma (I’m right, you’re wrong), and Judgement (harsh or critical opinions about others). Have you met people like this? How did you view them?

Whether we like to admit it or not, almost ALL of us have or still express these traits in one form or another in certain situations or contexts, and they can be quite subtle. Our words may say one thing, but our tone and/or body language may say another. People can sense this incongruence fairly easily and you, unknowingly, pay the price.

I have identified three key qualities that when cultivated and practiced, are antidotes or solutions to these traits, and, in combination, have amazing side benefits. They are: 1. Curiosity drives us to Investigate, Learn and Understand. Our minds become open to different perspectives and possibilities.

2. Embracing Uncertainty involves not being afraid to take action & pursuing a challenging goal. Being comfortable with whatever outcomes happen.

You either succeed or learn.

3. Conscious Vulnerability means opening ourselves to criticism or judgement, building trust, and creating deeper connections. It allows us to learn from our mistakes and grow as individuals.

Where the Magic Happens Curiosity, Embracing Uncertainty, and Conscious Vulnerability form a virtuous cycle, such that trust and authenticity arise naturally and easily.

Openness is the opposite of Dogmatism - When curiosity and embracing uncertainty combine, openness to feedback and a willingness to seek out diverse experiences and viewpoints arise. They also promote continuous learning, adaptability and the ability to connect with others on a deeper level.

Acceptance means embracing reality as it is, externally and internally, without resistance, and is the opposite of Judgement. It allows us to let go of negative emotions and make positive changes, increasing Self-Acceptance, which promotes inner peace, resilience and the ability to handle difficult situations.

Humility is the opposite of Arrogance and is the result of the interplay between Conscious Vulnerability and Curiosity. It involves acknowledging our limitations, being open to feedback, and learning from others. Humility fosters empathy, cooperation and growth. You will also no longer be a hostage to other people's opinions.

What WisDumb is NOT About Wisdumb is not about learning new techniques, methods, manipulating others, or cramming your mind with more and more information. It’s ultimately about dropping stuff, letting go, and when you do, your authentic self can’t help but shine.

A Deeper Analysis of the WA Economy The WA economy performed well over the past 12 months.

Population growth and business investment kept the WA economy powering along in 2023. The sharp rises in interest rates, beginning in April 2022, have shocked businesses and households who had become accustomed to ultra-low interest rates. Higher debt levels do make borrowers more sensitive to changes in interest rates. Nonetheless, interest rates at around where they are now are closer to “normal” than they have been for years. This is a good thing for the RBA who are far more comfortable having room to lower rates if the economy really needs it. The economic stimulus from the tax cuts starting in July and any other cost of living measures the Treasurer announces in the May Budget will determine the timing of any future interest cuts.

Despite the impact of thirteen interest rate rises that have weakened economic growth in the eastern states, the WA economy was riding high in 2023. State final demand, which measures activity in the domestic economy less trade, grew at over twice the national average in the 12 months to December 2023, the latest national accounts show. WA grew by 5.5 per cent, above its long-run average of around 4 per cent. Household consumption, which fell or was flat in NSW, Vic and Qld, grew by 1.7 per cent in WA, although this is below the long-run average of 4 per cent.

However, WA’s population has soared recently, growing by over 3 per cent in the year to March and adding around 200,000 people since September 2021.

WA’s population is now just shy of three million. The story is quite different when we look at household consumption per person.

Consumption per person declined by around 1.5 per cent in the year to December 2023, indicating households are spending more money to purchase a smaller volume of goods and services than they were 12 months ago.

Without the boost to the population, businesses would be finding conditions more challenging than they are.

One of the surprises to come out of the current rate tightening cycle is the resilience of the labour market, particularly in WA. Unemployment remained at a low 3.4 per cent in March, the lowest rate outside the ACT and below the national average of 3.8 per cent. Employment grew by a solid 4.1 per cent in the 12 months to March. The tight labour market has pushed wages up by around 4.6 per cent in 2023, higher than at any time since 2011, giving some relief to households, but still lagging inflation.

Growing productivity is the only way to secure long-run growth in living standards and investing in capital is the key. Since 2018, a lack of investment has seen capital productivity going backwards in WA, meaning there is less capital per worker. Typically, businesses increase labour productivity and profits by supplying workers with more and better capital per worker, not less.

In good news for WA’s growth and productivity outlook, private business investment grew by just under 15 per cent, with nondwelling construction, and machinery and equipment, well above average.

This is much needed investment because the seemingly endless income flows from WA’s iron ore sector look to be slowing as Chinese steel making reaches its peak and global supply increases.

We need to triage the most crucial tasks in your business, which will have the biggest impact early in the onboarding process.

Choose a couple of key projects which will free up your time in the first 3 weeks; whilst also teaching your VA about your business through immersive learning.

Some good examples are: Get your VA to conduct a social media review. Research what your industry is posting about, key themes and ideas. Then build a social media calendar and content based on the learning.

Review your website from an out-siders perspective. What does it say about your business? Is it clear and are there questions left unanswered?

Map out your processes while your VA is learning them (a chart tool like Miro is handy). This will help them understand the customer journey. Are there gaps? What could be improved or simplified?

Discuss with your VA what actions need to be taken for each type of email and work out the process steps which follow.

Once they have a good understanding of the queries coming into your business and appropriate responses, get them screening your inbox each morning.

They can respond to anything they can and send you a summary of what they have sent and what you need to reply to. (80% of emails can probably get answered by your VA; leaving with just a few to answer each day!)

Since our inception, 100 Women (a philanthropic giving circle), has fervently championed the rights, voices, and aspirations of women and girls across the globe. Through holistic collaborations with our members, volunteers and partners, and in supporting the innovative initiatives by our grant recipients, we continue to drive pathways toward gender equality and inclusivity.

The generosity of our member donations over the past ten years has allowed 100 Women to raise $1.25 million in grant funding, supporting 39 projects and 37,100 women and girls around the world.

As we reflect on the milestones achieved and challenges overcome, we are delighted to share with you our 10 year impact report which also serves as a call to action.

We all possess a unique power to shape the world around us through compassion, empathy, and action.

Mental health and mental illness are intricate topics, but what if there's a straightforward way for each of us to enhance our mental well-being? Could there be a correlation between mental health and heart-brain connection that's measurable? Cameron Oates, the founder and president of the registered charity U alright mate? Inc., is determined to explore these questions.

U alright mate? Inc. is dedicated to empowering individuals with workshops and online tools to regain control over their mental health. Inspired by personal tragedy, Cameron Oates, who lost his brother to suicide in 2018, felt compelled to do more in the realm of mental health. He assembled a passionate team committed to helping people understand their ability to influence their mental well-being and began sharing tools and techniques with anyone willing to listen.

Today, U alright mate? Inc. is honoured to have Tim Costello as their patron. Costello, a prominent figure in charity and social justice in Australia, lends his support to the charity's mission. His alignment with the charity's core values strengthens their resolve to revolutionise mental health approaches.

Costello's extensive experience and dedication to humanitarian causes make him an ideal patron for U alright mate? Inc. His involvement is expected to contribute significantly to the charity's ongoing success.

Partnering with District32, U alright mate? Inc. aims to provide valuablemental health tools to the corporate sector across Australia. By teaming up with organisations like District32, they hope to address the growing issue of mental illness and decrease national suicide rates.

District32 Supports Charlie’s Hope Our son Charlie is 13 years old and was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy in November 2017, no cure, 100% fatal, with an average age of 26, DMD is a slow degenerative muscle condition and Charlie will slowly lose the use of every muscle in his body ending with his lungs and heart, caused by a body protein called dystrophin.

Charlie has a second Cataract Formed. Charlie also has PHPV: Persistent Hyper-plastic Primary Vitreous, this essentially means he is almost blind in one eye. With 1 Cataract removed and an inocular lens inserted aged 3, due to no gel behind the eyeball, the sunlight does not penetrate correctly.
