While most of Oklahoma is frozen at the moment, walking into GreenLife Plant you are transported to a green oasis right here in Downtown Cushing. The owner, Carol, is a transplant originally from the Caribbean island of Trinidad, and then a New Yorker for 15 years. When, 2 years ago, she followed her heart and hit the road with her huge collection of Cacti and Carol told us that she instantly felt at home when driving into Cushing.

Carol explained that she has always loved gardening, house plants, and connecting with nature. One of her true passions is educating others about plants and gardening. She stressed how gardening is wonderful for one’s health, telling me about scientific studies about gardening improving health, with exercise and fresh air. With the Covid-19 pandemic causing food shortages and Victory Gardens coming back in style, Carol feels like a home garden is an insurance to help others protect themselves and their communities from food insecurities. Carol felt like her new home needed a place to not only buy house plants, seedlings and gardening supplies but a place where people could have a friend to help them with their gardening goals. Since GreenLife Planet’s opening, Carol has worked to encourage Gardening in the community around her. She says her favorite part of her business is building relationships with her customers, and she loves sharing her knowledge and learning from her new friends. Each week GreenLife planet has a featured plant of the week with a 25% discount on the featured plant. Carol posts the plant each week on Facebook, with care information on the featured plant. With tons of plans for the store and community and plans for “Seed to Table” classes in the works, Carol and GreenLife Planet are quickly becoming a pillar for gardeners to lean on.

Discussing women in business, Carol explained that everything comes down to passion and determination. You must never give up if you fall get back up and dust yourself off. She says she learned a long time ago to see value in every experience, even when it hurts, there is a lesson in every experience. Always look for the lesson, she told me. She advised that women have to face things head-on and believe in themselves to make their dreams come true.

After spending a little bit of time with Carol, one can feel her love for plants and people alike. Her soothing voice, explaining everything you need to know about successful gardening. Carol is growing a garden of change in Cushing, walking out of GreenLife Planet a person feels like they can grow anything, and they know if they hit a snag they can always come back and see their friend Carol for advice.
