Back In Time
I
It is a real pleasure to be writing this note for the Oiler. Last year was very disappointing with COVID – 19 and while we still aren’t out of the woods, progress has been made and I’m hopeful for the future.
to come here and spend my money going to school? The teachers don’t care if I learn or not. That was my wakeup call. From that point I began to apply myself to my education. My father used to tell me that a college degree was very important but it was really just an indication to potential employers that you can be taught, stay focused and disciple yourself. He said the company that hires you will teach you what they want you to know and do. Very wise counsel!
Back in time, think about this. If you could go “Back in Time” what would you do differently? If you could only make one change, what would it be? Having the benefit of decades of experience, we do have the ability to share some of what we’ve learned with our children and grandchildren. So, in a way we can go “Back in Time!” Personally, if I could go back, I’d worry less about what others thought of me. I’d take high school more seriously. High School is a time of preparation for our future and the future of our families. I’m confident that many of my classmates already understood that. It took me a little longer. The second semester of my freshman year I thought, why am I here? No one is forcing me to go to college. The real key for me was this question. Why did I work so hard all Summer Today I tell my grandchildren to pay attention in school and do their very best. • CHS Pep Rally 11:25 to 11:55 CHS Field House – Alumni should be in the lobby by 11:00 for pre-seating. Guided Tour of Field House immediately following Pep Rally. Leave from Lobby.

2020-2021 CHS HALL OF FAME INDUCTES
The Cushing Alumni Association is proud to announce two new inductees into the CHS Hall of Fame. The 2020 inductee is Bob Hall, Class of 1970; and Terry Brannon, Class of 1987, is the 2021 inductee. There will be an awards ceremony on Saturday, October 9, 2021, at 6:30 p.m. in the Cushing Community Theater in downtown Cushing.

2020 CHS HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE BOB HALL
’m nominating Bob for the Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 1970. When at CHS, Bob was in Drama Club, Oiler Staff, Band and was a Varsity Scholar. Following graduation, he went on the University of Oklahoma where he earned a BFA in Drama. Bob is a member of the Executive Board of Local 600 of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees and Motion Picture Machine Operators and the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Operating Cameramen. Bob has had a very successful career in tv and film cinematography since his graduation for CHS. He is a well-known and well-respected cameraman. His career began in 1979 and has lasted nearly 40 years. Many of us, who grew up with Bob, got use to looking at the movie credits hoping to find his name and we often did – over 80 times! Although Bob has been a Californian for some time, his hometown is Cushing and his growing up in Cushing is just part of who he is! His work has certainly taken the name of Cushing to the world! Bob has worked on more than 80 feature films and television shows, mostly in the role of First Assistant Cameraman. The First Assistant Cameraman works directly with the Director and the Director of Photography in setting up and executing the shots that make up the movie. While the Camera Operator is mostly responsible for the framing and moving of the camera during the shot, the First Assistant is responsible for maintaining the actors in focus. There is no ‘autofocus’ on a movie camera. Focus is done by the First Assistant physically adjusting the focus directly on the lens or using a wireless remote control. Not looking through the lens, but basically guessing the distance and going by whatever marks and measurements
were done during the rehearsal. Most modern productions employ two or more cameras, but the First Assistant on the ‘A’ camera is the head of the Camera Department and is responsible for most of what goes right or wrong during the show. Of the movies for which Bob has served as the ‘A’, First Assistant, three have been nominated for Oscars for Best Cinematography and one of them won the Oscar in that category. Some of Bob’s work include City of Lies, Rampage, Dunkirk, Westworld TV Series, Looper, The Dark Knight Rises, Water for Elephants, Valkyrie, The Dark Knight, Walk the Line, Stuart Little, The Exorcist III, and Silkwood. Bob retired a year and a half ago. His last show was Grace and Frankie. He thought it would mean shorter hours since Jane Fonda and Lillie Tomlin are in their 80’s. The crews generally work a minimum 12-hour day. It turned our that Jane and Lillie could still do 12-14 hour days! Bob is now pursuing a second passion – playing drums. Bob lives with his wife Karen of 45 years in Woodland Hills, California. He has a daughter Jessie, age 32, who is a hair stylist. He is the son of Tom and Bobbie Ruth Hall. 2021CHS HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE TERRY BRANNON
would like to nominate Terry Brannon to the Cushing Alumni Association Hall of Fame. Terry Brannon, Class of 1987, resides in Cushing with his wife Casie Brannon and their daughter Ariya Regnier. He also has two stepchildren, Garret Moore and Kassi Mitchell. He is a proud papa of five grandchildren. His mother, Viola Brannon, also resides in Cushing. After graduation he became a police dispatcher for the City of Cushing for three years and worked his way up to becoming an officer. Terry served the community as an officer for 10 years and was the assistant Chief of Police for three years. While serving as the assistant police chief, he attended Redlands Community College and obtained a degree in criminal justice while being in the college’s honor society. He was promoted to Police Chief in 2007, where he served until retirement in 2012. During his career in law enforcement, he was awarded Payne County Law Enforcement Officer of the year in 2012; he established the Autism Registry in Cushing; and he was an adjunct instructor for Meridian Technology for five years. At the age of 17, Terry became the voice of the Tiny Tigers Football, and will be starting his 35th season this fall. His love for youth center sports continued as he was an umpire and referee for ten years. He served as the Youth Center Board President for two years, as well. A long time Lions Club member, Terry was named a Melvin Jones Fellow, and served as president for two years. After retirement, he missed serving the community, so he chose to run and was elected to the city council. He was a councilman for four years and chairman for one year. In 2017, he was approached to serve the city in a greater capacity and was hired as City Manager where he still serves today. It was during this time that the vision of Cushing Pride came to fruition. With Terry’s longtime vision of this program and with Richard Thackray’s hard work, it continues to be a thriving program today. Terry was also a chairman for the Tomorrow’s Leaders High School Program for juniors. Although he no longer serves in this role, he still makes time to go to the high school and speak to Julie Puls’ class regarding the future for them and showing them good job qualities and character traits. He currently serves on the Payne County Drug Court Board. Despite how busy he may seem, he thoroughly enjoys
officiating high school basketball, which he has done for the last 34 years. In this time, he has officiated sixteen OSSAA State Championship games. During one of Terry’s yearly officiating camps, he was awarded the Bill “Sarge” Stover Encourage Award by the OSSAA. While being well-known in the basketball community, he was offered a position as a NCAA Big 12 Women’s Basketball Observer. When Terry isn’t at work, community events, or his sporting gigs you can typically find him at this daughter’s collegiate sporting events or out and about with his family. He enjoys spending time with his grandkids and family. Terry loves to collect police memorabilia and Challenge Coins which is very evident when walking into his office. He has been attending Life Church with his family for 10 years. I am nominating Terry Brannon for this distinguished award because to me he is the true definition of a Cushing Tiger and what it means to be one. He is always going above and beyond to help not only bring up our community but the people within in it as well. You won’t find many people who love and devote themselves to the city they were born in. Terry is a strong believer and practices servant leadership. He believes in servant leadership and he believes he exists to serve the people. Terry has taken the name of Cushing to people in other communities by being a representative of good character and being a well-known man who is extremely proud of where he is from. Whether officiating a basketball game or out to dinner with his family, he always tells people he is from the Pipeline Crossroads of the World and all the good things that are going on in the Cushing community. His selfless heart and love for serving others has a great impact on every individual he meets. He has opened his home and heart to foster children in Oklahoma. I could go on and on about the number of selfless acts he has performed. If you were to ask around the community you would find many stories about Terry Brannon and his selflessness and servant heart. Submitted anomynously.

CUSHING ALUMNI ASSOCIATION AND CUSHING DISC GOLF CLUB PRESENT
1ST ANNUAL CUSHING OPEN DISC GOLF TOURNAMENT October 9 & 10, 2021 Earlier this summer, the Cushing Board of Commissioners unanimously approved improvements in Memorial Park, expanding the disc golf course from 9 holes to 18 holes so sanctioned tournaments through the Professional Disc Golf Association can be held there. The Cushing Rotary Club obtained a grant to pay for 9 concrete pads and signage, and Geoffrey Beasley matched the grant to pay for the remaining 9 holes. This will help make Cushing a destination city for future tournaments and tourism. The current disc baskets will be moved out by the high school for the newly formed high school team to use. The improvements in Memorial Park are free to the public year-round. Disc Golf is the fastest growing sport in the world, is all inclusive, and gets people of all ages exercising and enjoying nature. Cushing Alumni Association has partnered with Cushing Disc Golf Club to offer a new family friendly activity for Homecoming and Alumni Reunion Weekend October 9-10. The first annual Cushing Open Disc Gol Tournament’s shotgun start is at 9 a.m. on October 9!. This is a fantastic way to support your Alumni Association and the Youth of Cushing.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP
Each year the Cushing Alumni Association awards a $1,000.00 scholarship to two Cushing High School seniors who meet criteria for character, academic performance, and personal achievement and honors during grades 9 through 12. In addition to submitting an application and written essay for consideration, applicants are required to attend one Cushing Alumni Association meeting and perform a service project for the association.
2021 CUSHING ALUMNI ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT JAYSE NICHOLAS
S
eventeen-year-old Jayse Nicholas is ranked 7th in her class of 115 and through hard work and determination, can boast a weighted GPA of 4.37. She has been a member of the National Honors Society for two years, and received the Cushing Academic Society award. She is involved with Cushing Pride and Tomorrow’s Leaders. Her leadership class recently completed a food drive and will soon engage in a teddy bear drive to benefit Payne County Youths. She has been on the Principal’s Honor Roll and Superintendent’s Honor Roll. If studies and community involvement weren’t enough, this busy senior also plays fast and slow pitch softball and basketball. Jayse wishes to attend Oklahoma State University and is interested in going into the medical field with emphasis on Pharmaceuticals or Sports Medicine. “My whole life I was raised with the ‘If you want it, you have to work for it’ mentality, and that’s what I’ve been doing,” Jayse wrote in her essay. No doubt. And no doubt she will accomplish whatever she chooses in whichever direction she decides to go.

2019 CUSHING ALUMNI ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT AVA BRICHACEK nother seventeen-year-old recipient is Ava Brichacek. She is ranked 12th in her senior class with a 4.28 weighted GPA. She is a member of the National Honor Society, National Technical Honor, Key Club, and DOVE leader at her church.
Ava is also enrolled in Central Technology’s Biomedical Science Program and is currently involved in a Capstone project to create gel mattresses to fit into an incubator with sound waves going through the mattress to simulate the womb. She is the HOSA president, and served on the Central Tech Superintendent’s Advisory Committee. This spirited young lady has big ambitions. She plans on attending the University of Oklahoma where she will study medicine and specialize in cardiology. In her essay, Ava quoted Lin Manuel-Miranda in Hamilton, ‘They think me Macbeth, ambition is my folly.’ She went on to clarify that she would not go on a murderous rampage as Macbeth did, but that she would not stop until her goals were achieved. We look forward to seeing great things from Ava, and wish her well.

illiam J. (Bill) Yantis, Class of 1945, came home from Tucson, Arizona in December 1984 to visit his parents. He kept trying to get some of his friends to have a dinner at the Country Club and talk about having an all school reunion. The word spread and a good 25 of us showed up that night at the Cushing Country Club. I can’t recall all who were there, but it got organized. Frank Cochran said he’d be President; others just spoke up to assume duties. Everyone just got to work, and we had the 1st ever CHS All-School Reunion in May of 1985. We had 750 CHS Tigers attending. The 2nd ever was even bigger and at the 3rd one in 1987 we had 1,000 Alumni return, Bill Yantis was the Parade Marshall and Jay Daniel, Class of 1961 (TV director and actor who gave Dora Hobbs much credit for his success) was the celebrity for that year and one of the three to receive the first Hall of Fame award. Plaques were also presented to Frank Lewis, Class of 1931 and John “Mickey” Imel, Class of 1951...and think of all the honors that have been presented since.

The more from these younger classes that start blending in, seeing what needs to be done, and beginning to take the helm with newer ideas – will be great!! You are needed. The ones that have worked every year should certainly be appreciated as they are helping the Association to continue for all of us. One must also think what a positive function this reunion is for our community. Talk about a good economic development activity! Consider the impact when hundreds return to their hometown for the weekend, then other relatives plan family get-to-gathers while alumni are here which brings additional family member to Cushing. All are making purchases, filling up cars, staying in our motels, eating in our restaurants. Creative retail business owners would certainly see this as an opportunity. The list goes on and on. It even helps the community pride and attitudes. Notice how the town is ‘spruced’ up for that weekend. I’m sure you will see every business in town with a “Welcome Alumni” sign in their window. The downtown area, now branded the “Broadway District”, is very anxious for all to return and visit the new businesses in the district, the renovations and see how the Downtown Cushing Revitalization Association has been successful in helping the Broadway District to flourish. The CHS Alumni Hall, located in the Broadway District, certainly needs to be mentioned. This is located at 116 East Broadway, was donated by John Bryant, ’59 (Bank of Cushing) and was dedicated to the association on May 23, 1998. A meeting place for all, and all are amazed at the amounts of memorabilia and all the history that is within this Hall. Don’t miss seeing your Alumni Hall when in Cushing. Everyone is invited, whether a CHS graduate or not. You will be amazed at the work and organization that has been done there in the past few years. Also remember to view the monument that was placed in 1992 on the site of the former high school on North Street. A good photo opp site too. No one person can do it alone. All of us CHS grads are needed to participate, provide impute, support and have fun together. No matter where you now live, always keep your CHS Reunion weekend on your calendar to come home, renew acquaintances and count the many blessing that we all have in our hometown of Cushing, America. CUSHING ALUMNI HALL
f you desire a healthy dose of nostalgia, or a jaunty trip down memory lane, may we recommend a visit to the Cushing Alumni Hall located at 116 East Broadway. For those born before 1970, you might remember it as the west side of the C. R. Anthony building downtown. In 1998, the building was donated by John Bryant and the Bank of Cushing to the Alumni Association who had been formed practically a decade earlier. Since that time, upkeep and updates to the building and its contents have been maintained by donations. The Alumni Hall holds an impressive collection of Cushing High School trophies, cheerleading and band uniforms, pictures, year books, scrap books, and Oilers that span nearly one hundred years. There are a number of glass cases containing memorabilia from various graduating classes. A Memorial Board along the west wall was created at the onset. Those who have lost loved ones can honor them by making a $15 donation. The loved one’s name and class year is engraved upon a brass plate and placed on the board. The Alumni Association gladly accepts all manner of donations whether it be financial or long forgotten articles collecting dust in the back of your closets. The Alumni Association meets in the hall at 6:00 p.m., the first Tuesday of each month, and welcome any and all participants. It will be open for the All-Class Reunion, Friday, October 8 from 2 :00 p.m. until 5:30 p.m., and again Saturday, October 9, from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.
