Sustainability can have a long term positive impact.
Company scoops top award.
DAVINA TANNER President of Norfolk Chamber of Commerce
The theme of this issue of Norfolk Voice is ‘sustainability’. It’s an interesting word with a plethora of possible meanings. For example, when referring to environmental responsibility it can be defined as: “capable of being maintained at a steady level without exhausting natural resources or causing severe ecological damage”. Or if you’re talking in an economic sense, a definition could simply be; “capable of being sustained”. In my opinion, sustainability is what all of us as business people should be aiming for. In these times of economic pressure it is vital that we build organisations that have longevity; that can offer people security and that can have a long term positive impact on the economic success of our region. The ‘green’ side of sustainability can go hand in hand with the economic side. For example, in 2006, Chapelfield set itself a huge challenge: to reduce our recycling figure from 31.4% to 95%. To do this we had to completely revolutionise our waste-management process; instead of waste being sorted off-site (as for most shopping centres) it is now sorted at source. We ensure that wherever possible waste materials are recycled and food waste goes to be composted. It has not been a simple task and has demanded investment of money, manpower and enthusiasm. But we reached our target and 95% of our waste is now recycled thanks to the commitment of staff and retailers. We’ve reduced the amount we send to landfill from 37 tonnes per month to three tonnes per month and, over a year, this reduction prevents 270 tonnes of CO2 from being emitted. But our commitment to recycling also has financial benefits for Chapelfield and its retailers, meaning that it is a truly sustainable project. The Norwich Carbon Reduction Trust (ncrt) works in and around Norwich to help ensure that current generations help build communities that are environmentally sustainable; making a difference to people’s lives today and leaving a positive lasting legacy for future generations. ncrt aims to achieve this by preserving, conserving and protecting the environment and promoting the prudent use of natural resources. It seeks to promote sustainable means of achieving economic growth and regeneration and offers people the opportunity to learn more about sustainability. I’m proud that organisations such as Chapelfield, Norse and May Gurney are committed to supporting ncrt to ensure that this organisation can provide best practice advice to individuals and businesses in our county. I would urge anyone that doesn’t already know about Norwich Carbon Reduction Trust to get in touch with them. 2012 will be a tough year for the economy but Norfolk Chamber will be doing everything it can to help the Norfolk business community to survive and thrive.

Grant Thornton calls for inheritance tax review. Leading financial and business advisory firm Grant Thornton, which has offices in Norwich, is calling for a review of the UK’s Inheritance Tax (IHT) system.
Stuart Maggs, Senior Tax Manager at Grant Thornton East Anglia
Grant Thornton’s call follows the firm’s recent survey of more than 400 UK homeowners with properties valued over £250,000, which showed that the majority of respondents found the current IHT regime confusing and unjust. Stuart Maggs, Senior Tax Manager at Grant Thornton East Anglia, said: “The results of our poll show that people are generally dissatisfied with the current IHT system. There are several ways in which UK policy could be adjusted or replaced if there is the political will to do so. “The Government fears that scrapping or adjusting the IHT system would have a detrimental effect on its coffers in difficult economic times. “However, this overlooks the fact that an alternative tax would be introduced to take its place which could raise equivalent revenue whilst reducing collection and administration costs.” Grant Thornton suggests a number of alternative measures or adjustments to the IHT system which found favour with survey respondents. The most notable result was that 86% of those questioned wanted the main family home to be exempt from IHT. The current system is seen as unjust as, if for example, siblings live together in the same way as a married couple, the surviving sibling may be forced to sell the home on death to meet the IHT bill. A further 74% of those surveyed said small trading businesses should be exempt from IHT to help sustain growth in the current climate. Another popular proposal for change, receiving 41% support, was for a combination of progressive IHT rates rather than the flat 40%, which vary both by relationship to the deceased and the size of the inheritance. This could mean, for example, a 10% rate for children, a 20% rate for other relatives and a 40% rate for non family members, combined with
a ‘step’ rate of tax on the inheritance, starting at 10% above the current £325,000 threshold ‘nil rate band’ and moving up through 20%, 30%, 40% leading to 50% on assets above say, £5million. As an alternative to IHT, the most popular option supported by 41% of respondents was to abolish IHT in favour of ‘green taxes’. This could create the same levels of revenue and demonstrate the Government’s commitment to the environment. The least popular alternative to the current IHT regime (with 67% of those surveyed) was any increase in income tax such as a 1p rise which would raise an estimated £3.9 billion - larger than the £2.7 billion raised by IHT last year.
Stuart Maggs said: “What started off as a fairly straightforward system introduced in 1986 has now become a complex maze of traps for the unwary. There are a number of options for improvement going forward and we must also consider how the best features from other European countries could be appropriate for the UK. “One thing is clear from our survey and that is the antipathy felt towards a tax on the home. If IHT is to be retained in some form, serious consideration should be given to introducing a main residence exemption. We would welcome a full review of the system by the Government and the Office of Tax Simplification.”

Creating confidence is key to Routes to Growth. Yarmouth and Lowestoft Enterprise Zone, with its relaxed tax and planning rules, would also help create jobs, while the county also needed to press for full dualling of the A47. South-West Norfolk MP Elizabeth Truss emphasised the importance of good skills and training and said more needed to be done to encourage youngsters in Norfolk to study maths and sciences. Mid Norfolk MP George Freeman stressed the crucial role that the life sciences sector around the Norwich Research Park could play in fuelling growth.
John Longworth
Businesses attending our ‘Routes to Growth’ event on 3 February had the opportunity to take part in open and honest debate about key local issues and hear from six of Norfolk’s nine MPs, as well as John Longworth, Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce. Speaking at the event, which was held at and sponsored by Sprowston Manor, John Longworth said that creating confidence was key to helping businesses bring about recovery. He felt that the Chamber’s call for a Plan A, which would see Government spending on road and rail links and increasing capacity at airports, were crucial measures to leveraging in private sector investment and encouraging growth. He added that while businesses were going through tough times, the outlook was not as bleak as was often reported in the media, but much could depend on what happened in the Eurozone.
Speaking at the event, Caroline Williams, CEO of Norfolk Chamber of Commerce, said: “It’s important for businesses in Norfolk to utilise the drive and strength of our local MPs. If we want change the route is through the ‘Norfolk Nine’, the affectionate name now given to our Norfolk MPS, to feed the message back into Westminster. It is business which will drive Norfolk’s economic economy and we need to ensure that we articulate our needs and wants to help us to achieve that aim. Improvements in the local infrastructure such as broadband, road and rail, up skilling our workforce, especially our young people, and the reduction of red tape surrounding employment law will be key to encouraging investment and growth in Norfolk.”
He also said the Government should look at short term measures such as boosting credit allowances, particularly for smaller firms to encourage them to invest or export.
Question from the floor
“If we can get business confidence moving so that they have the confidence to invest and take people on, then we can start to move in a much better way,” Mr Longworth said. “We think we can have, on a short term basis, credit allowances for businesses prepared to invest in the next year, particularly smaller businesses, but without it being a problem to the ‘Plan A’ envelope. “We have got to stick to Plan A, as it’s important to the UK economy that we keep the same rate of borrowing,” he added. “The most important thing to take away is that we are not in a recession - we are bottoming along with minimal growth. The indicators are that we are not going to go into a recession this year, unless something goes wrong with the Eurozone.” The MPs at the event focused on the coalition government’s current deficit reduction plans, and there was no mention of measures such as a targeted VAT cut, which some businesses have called for, or raising of the minimum tax threshold, which has been hinted at by Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg. Great Yarmouth MP Brandon Lewis told delegates that measures such as the Great

Company secures college contract. Partnership centrepiece. Two Mongolian yurts are the centrepiece of a new link-up between City College Norwich and Eaton Vale Activity Centre, further enhancing the status of the outdoor adventure course at the college as one of the best in the UK. The new five-year partnering with Eaton Vale Activity Centre will mean closer ties between the outdoor adventure course and the industry in which the students will go on to work.
Bob York - Deputy head of estates, and Ruth Metcalf - Commercial director at Norse Commercial Services
Norse Commercial Services has won a contract to provide cleaning and security at Northampton College. The three-year contract, worth approximately £350,000 a year, started on January 1.
The cleaning and security operations cover the three college sites, with staff transferring from the two incumbent contractors, consolidating services under one provider. Cleaning will be carried out on a daily basis, augmented by periodic ‘deep’ cleaning. The security contract includes guard patrols, CCTV monitoring, car park and on-site traffic
management, key control, fire drills/inspections of fire safety equipment and concierge duties. Norse Commercial Services Sales Director Geoff Tucker said: “This is a significant addition to our educational cleaning and security operations. It was one of the hardest fought tenders we have ever submitted and we are really looking forward to working with such a prestigious college. “This is the first of a number of high-profile contracts and expansion plans that Norse will be announcing over the coming months, building on all areas of the company’s growing reputation, both within Eastern England and other regions across the UK.” Bob York, Northampton College Deputy Director of Estates, said: “We are looking forward to working with Norse because their knowledge of the public sector gives them a natural understanding of the budgetary pressures the education sector is facing, and the need to achieve greater efficiencies. “We look forward to seeing how their innovative and imaginative approach to cleaning and security management will achieve the cost reduction programme they have outlined.”

Being based at Eaton Vale’s 14-acre site means that the students will now benefit from combining their learning and practical training within one of Norfolk’s leading providers of outdoor activities. The Sport (Outdoor Adventure) BTEC Extended Diploma is a practical, work-related course that prepares students for careers in outdoor adventure. In addition, the centre will take on six students as full-time employees during the busy summer season, which benefits Eaton Vale Activity Centre by providing fully qualified and trained staff who already know the centre, whilst giving the students further experience. City College Norwich Principal, Dick Palmer, said: “Basing our outdoor adventure students at a commercial activity centre is a real coup. Combining classroom study in the on-site yurts alongside access to a full range of outdoor activities means that the students can spend more time gaining their instructor qualifications and getting relevant industry experience under their belts.” Richard Lang, Operations Manager, Eaton Vale Activity Centre, one of Norfolk’s leading providers of outdoor activities, said: “The real benefits of this partnership are that we are producing work-ready staff for local and national providers of outdoor activities. The course allows my staff to integrate with the students, sharing their experience and giving them an unrivalled start to their outdoor careers or when applying to top outdoor industry universities such as Bangor or Cumbria.” For more information about the Outdoor Adventure course at City College Norwich, see http://www.ccn.ac.uk/course/sport-outdooradventure-btec-extended-diploma, call the College on (01603) 773 773 or email information@ccn.ac.uk.

Ian Hacon, CEO of Blue Sky Leisure, helped get fundraising off to a flying start at the conference by running a sweepstake on how far he would travel on his turbo trainer cycling machine while staff enjoyed their evening meal. Travelling 28.3 miles in one hour and 20 minutes, he raised £200 for the charity. He also announced that he would be raising money for EACH when running his third London Marathon in April. Ian said: “We’re proud to be supporting such a fantastic local charity and pleased that any funds we raise will help EACH continue its amazing work.
Staff from across the group, which owns Kelling Heath Holiday Park, Woodhill Park at East Runton, Blue Sky Homes in Bradwell and the Zaks restaurants in Norwich and Poringland, hope to raise thousands of pounds for the charity this year through fundraising activities.
“We spent a long time looking for a charity that would unite staff behind a common cause and from the reaction we’ve had already it’s clear we made the right choice. Staff development and morale is crucial for us, so it’s great to see so many of our people getting involved already – they’ve got some fantastic ideas.”
Danielle Gravestock, EACH Norfolk Fundraiser, said: “EACH is very excited to be working in partnership with Blue Sky Leisure.
EACH has also announced that Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge accepted the honorary position of Royal Patron of the charity.
“Their support will not only help EACH to carry on supporting families and providing care for children and young people with lifethreatening conditions across Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Essex, but it will also help to raise our profile in the local community.”
Graham Butland, EACH Chief Executive, said: “Having our work recognised in this way is not only a tribute to our staff and supporters, but a huge boost for the children, young people and families receiving our care and support. The Duchess’s support will help us increase the awareness and understanding of the full range of services we offer children and families, and really celebrates the great work being done by all children’s hospices across the UK.”

Your local link to London 2012 Waveney Gymnastics Club, a purpose built, world class training facility on the outskirts of Lowestoft is renowned through-out the country for bringing international athletes and recognition to the area. Waveney, which is also a charity, will be bringing a taste of this year’s Olympics to the local area through its role as an official London 2012 Pre Games Training Camp. “In less than six months, Waveney Gymnastics Club will be hosting up to three Olympic delegations in preparation for London 2012. This is a very exciting time for the club, town, county and country” said Chloe McMorran, Manager. “Only last month we hosted three international teams; Gymnastics Canada, Australia and Great Britain’s Men, which received extensive televised coverage. We have already signed MOUs with Australia and Canada for them to return in July, and we are still waiting to hear from the Japanese Trampoline Squad, who expect to win Olympic Gold!”
The ‘package’ that we provide these international teams is fully inclusive of accommodation, catering, transport and gym hire. As soon as a team lands at the airport, we look after their every need. However we want to offer more to ensure these teams return to the area, benefiting the Club and District as well as local businesses. As is often assumed, these international teams don’t receive extensive funding and therefore our prices have to be very competitive, which consequently means the charity has to often subsidise international visits. If any businesses/organisations can offer assistance at any level, whether it’s financial support of a team, a free trip up the Broads or vehicle hire, we would like to hear from you. Fendercare Look to Expand Further into the Energy Industry. ADVERTISING FEATURE
Fendercare Marine became a part of the James Fisher & Sons PLC group of companies in 2005 and since this time has seen considerable expansion with revenue growth increasing in excess of 10 fold over the past decade. From a background of marine product sales and ship to ship (STS) transfer services, including the world renowned Yokohama fenders, Fendercare has developed into a multi facetted company that can provide a number of complex marine solutions into the Oil & Gas and traditional maritime world. Alongside this growth in its own capabilities, being part of James Fisher group has enabled Fendercare to leverage the many synergies from other companies in the group that are also leading providers of global marine services. The culmination of this effort has recently resulted in BP awarding James Fisher [Angola] Limitada a multi million USD, 5 year contract to provide turnkey marine management services, which include the complete marine, diving & vessel
berthing management services for their floating production storage and offtake (FPSO) vessels and the single buoy mooring (SBM) offshore Angola. A significant part of this contract will be executed by Norfolk based Fendercare. “The award of this contract to James Fisher and Fendercare, is a huge vote of confidence from an oil major” “that we are able to deliver high quality turnkey services in remote offshore locations.” commented Martin Dronfield [Group Director of Services] This expansion into port and terminal management demonstrates the step change in the group’s capabilities and was originally made possible by the acquisition in 2010 of a Great Yarmouth based diving company. A core part of Fendercare’s history has been to supply marine products and equipment and in this area Fendercare continues to innovate and expand it’s portfolio. This year Fendercare intends to launch a new range of subsurface buoyancy products to the offshore industry. In addition, Fendercare has been working with it’s sister company, Scantech, to develop a safe workover solution for use in deepwater drilling environments.

The facility will enable us to do what we do best: provide an excellent reliable service & it will act as a conduit to bring solutions from other James Fisher group companies to the Southern North Sea area”. “It is a very exciting time here at Fendercare”, commented Martin Dronfield “and I am hugely excited to be part of the company as we continue to expand our global footprint and target not just our traditional marine based supply of equipment but also the provision of marine related services”.

Norwich design company ‘best in show’. Expanding company takes on staff.
A Norwich design company has beaten off competition from 200 exhibiters to win ‘Best Stand’ at Autosport Engineering International at the NEC in Birmingham. GGS, based at White Lodge Business Park on Hall Road, which specialises in exhibition stands and graphic design, produced the 24sqm stand on behalf of fellow Norfolk business bf1systems, of Diss. The stand was designed and built using GGS modular aluminium hire stock and featured two high-definition plasma screens, glass display cabinets, LED floor up-lighters and a Damien Hirst-style showcase to house a £70,000 carbon fibre bike. bf1systems is a leading manufacturer of electrical, electronic and composite components featured on World Championship winning vehicles in Formula One, Indycar and Moto GP.
It appointed GGS in November last year to design a stand with clean lines and clinical lighting techniques, to showcase its offering in an eye-catching way. GGS specialises in the production of small to medium exhibition stands and in the past year has designed and built stands for shows in the UK, Brussels, Germany, Cape Town and Brazil. Duncan Smith, Director of GGS, said: “For one of our stands to be selected as ‘best stand in show’ is a fantastic start to the year. “We are noticing a renewed confidence in exhibiting and clients are appreciating the value of face-to-face marketing tools such as exhibition stands, which can quickly make a return on investment if designed with skill and panache.” John Bailey, Managing Director of bf1systems, said: “We were very pleased with the stand that GGS designed for us. The design of the stand helped bf1systems showcase the engineering and electronic technology we launched at the Autosport show.” Autosport Engineering International is an annual exhibition which is widely regarded as Europe’s largest trade-only motorsport exhibition.

Is time moving faster than usual this year?.
Obviously it is not, but lots of people have expressed surprise to me about how quickly this year seems to be passing. Usually time drags when things are going badly, so does that mean that Norfolk businesses are feeling buoyant? As the Chamber membership includes businesses across all sizes and sectors, their feedback is a good barometer as to how the overall Norfolk business community is feeling. The British Chambers of Commerce’s Quarterly Economic Survey, which includes Norfolk members, asked a number of key questions about current and expected business prospects. 2011 Q4 results indicated that Norfolk businesses are faring better than the UK as a whole in many areas, and are generally feeling more confidence about the future. Norfolk Chamber’s theme for 2012 is ‘Unlocking Growth’ which was kicked off at our business conference in December when business leaders and the Secretary of State Dr Vince Cable identified what they felt the opportunities were for 2012. The key enabling factors to unlocking
growth, which locally we have some control over and I exclude the world’s economy from this list, are infrastructure, skills and supply chain development. After much work and lobbying from business and the public sector, the A11 work has been started, funding for the NDR took another step forward and better Broadband is getting closer. Skills shortages are trickier to solve, but as businesses we can support our schools and make use of the new funding coming through the system to businesses to help employ and train our young people. It is difficult to get most businesses excited about infrastructure and skills – we just want them to be better and quickly. However, what is currently exciting businesses are the supply chain opportunities which are emerging in Norfolk. Many of our larger Norfolk businesses and public bodies are looking more actively to source from local suppliers. It makes good business sense for them, with the additional advantage of improving their green credentials when buying locally. New opportunities are also being created through the energy sector and through capital projects being delivered, for example NRP. Businesses will be able to directly access many of these buyers at the Opportunities 2012 event in March www.opportunities2012.co.uk. The Norfolk companies who will rise to the current challenging economic situation will be the ones who are open to new ideas, get out there and network, are willing to take risks and recognise where they need to improve their own skills.
There will be exciting opportunities for Norfolk businesses during 2012 – ensure you unlock your own growth!

NORFOLK VOICE
Gunter Pauli.
THE B
Is this the end of the days of Big Business?. Entrepreneur Gunter Pauli will give a keynote address to the Chamber’s Sustainability 2012 on May 10. The event which has been designed to engage the Norfolk business community in opportunities available within the sustainable supply chain and help them to be more sustainable and more profitable themselves.
With so much talk about the ‘green revolution‘, business people could be forgiven for thinking that the battle for hearts and minds is won. That companies understand the challenges and are rising admirably to them. Talk to Gunter Pauli and you quickly find another, bleaker message. Gunter, one of the world’s leading thinkers on sustainability in business, said: “I do not think that business has got the message. “They have an idea that they have to do something about sustainability but they are more concerned with jobs and being competitive. “Sustainability is a big challenge for businesses and to them, it seems, and I stress seems, that anything green has to be expensive and that their customers will squeal about the cost.
Innovation is something he has espoused throughout his own business career. Born in Antwerp, Belgium, in 1956, he obtained his masters in business administration in 1982 at Fontainebleau, France, and went on to become founder and Chairman of PPA Holdings and of more than ten other companies, as well as founder and CEO of the European Service Industries Forum, Secretary General of the European Business Press Federation and Chairman and President of green products company Ecover. Under his leadership, Ecover pioneered an ecological factory in 1992.
Gunter said: “I am interested in his research into the technology and I asked him to show me his lab. I knew a company in Sweden that also specialises in the technology and they have already sent people over to see him.
Gunter also founded the Zero Emissions Research and Initiatives (ZERI) at the United Nations University in Tokyo, and established The Global ZERI Network as a foundation, redesigning production and consumption into clusters of industries inspired by natural systems.
He does not believe, however, that such competitive mindsets should necessarily involve big business. As a big supporter of local businesses around the world, he is sceptical of the contribution made by global companies. His latest initiatives, for example, include the redesign of mining operations and the development of a new concept for transparent investment banking. He also constructed the largest bamboo pavilion in modern days at the World Expo 2000 in Germany to present the case for traders in the coffee region of Manizales, Colombia.
He takes water as an example to explain his ideas, saying: “If you go to places in the world where there are water shortages, big business tends to talk about resolving the situation with membranes and reverse osmosis but what if there was another way which smaller companies can do?” The way he has in mind is to use a vortex, which can remove air, salt and other impurities using only the force of gravity. Vortex technology allows water that flushes toilets on the 10th floor to be reused just one or two floors below, reducing by a factor of 10 the water wasted. He argues that by employing gravity-powered vortex devices to replace the chemistry used to purify water, we move closer to a more sustainable world. He said: “The problem is that although the vortex can solve the water shortages, if you are a big company and membranes and reverse osmosis is a billion dollar business for you, you are unlikely to support the idea of vortexes, so come up again against the issue of competitiveness against sustainability.
“If you look at the statistics that the UN is issuing, less than one per cent of the world’s companies are green. We have been talking about this question for twenty years now and we are still at less than one per cent.
“My message is that there is a way for small companies to compete with the big companies. If you are facing a giant, you cannot do it on your own and that is why we need clusters and networks. If you have 40 or 50 companies working together you can, for example, make a success of something like the vortex.”
“Either we have got the wrong proposal or businesses do not understand it. I do not think we have got the wrong proposal. What we need is for employers to be more innovative, not just in the technology but in their mindset.”
It was such an approach that brought him to Norfolk because he wanted to find out more about vortex research being conducted by Phil Risby of the University of East Anglia.
THE MAGAZINE OF NORFOLK CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY
“We need innovative thinking like this. In 2012, businesses will be concerned about rising unemployment and government cutting back on its spending but we still need to be innovative. We can do that and can also be competitive. That will the message when I speak at the Chamber Sustainability Conference in May.”
His beliefs are driven by a growing conviction that the days of a globalisation dominated by big business may be numbered. Gunter, who has written 15 books and edited four, selling millions of copies and being printed in more than 30 languages, will this year bring out another, called The End of Globalization. He said: “I believe in keeping things local. Take the cookie. I always thought the cookie was made by Grandma but look at it today. It uses ingredients in one country, is manufactured in another, blended in another and shipped all over the world. It makes more sense to keep it local, to have 450 companies making cookies. “Globalisation was brought in at a time when governments were imposing severe restrictions on trade but that has gone. Globalisation has emptied local communities. By thinking local, we can put the life back into them.”

Local commercial finance team shortlisted in Moneyfacts Awards. Delight over planning decision.
A Norwich-based commercial finance broker has been confirmed as one of six national finalists for the prestigious Business Moneyfacts Broker Awards 2012 to be announced on March 29. B2B Cashflow Solutions Ltd, a privately owned and independent commercial finance, business banking and financial project-management consultancy, has been shortlisted in the ‘Asset Based Finance Broker of the Year’ category. The company was nominated and recognised from within the industry based on the high level of excellence across all aspects of its business model throughout the year. Director of B2B Cashflow Solutions, Simon Reynolds, said: “Being shortlisted in the Business Moneyfacts Broker Awards 2012 is a welcome acknowledgment of the work we have undertaken in regard the quality of our service and expertise, and our overall progress to become the preferred commercial finance partners to businesses and financial institutions throughout East Anglia. Our business model offers region-wide coverage with dedicated local support and we are encouraged that our approach is recognised within the industry.” B2B Cashflow Solutions was established in 2006 with a vision to broaden the scope of commercial lending through innovative products and services. Following the 2008 banking crisis, the directors identified the opportunity to develop funding solutions, within an increasingly restrictive financial climate, which complement those offered by the banks and other traditional lenders on behalf of their business customers. Simon continues: “Our differentiation in creatively bringing together a wide range of elements to build financial solutions is underpinned by our consciously relationship driven and personcentred approach to our customers, partners, and our business.” This approach has proven very successful. B2B Cashflow Solutions has gone from strength to strength in the five years they have been trading, with a 43% increase in turnover in its current financial year. Today, more than 30% of the company's business originates from referrals from the major financial institutes while maintaining and developing a direct, proactive approach to relationships with business customers to deliver asset based lending solutions throughout East Anglia. Around 75% of small businesses which fail do so because of poor cash management within their

business and not necessarily because they don't make a profit.
Paul Robinson Partnership (UK) LLP has announced that a change of use planning permission has been granted for the Nexus Consortium secondary/higher education facility on Beacon Park.
In the current economic climate many perfectly viable businesses are failing to secure the financial support they need to invest and grow while others are increasingly struggling to generate sufficient cash to meet daily working capital requirements, and to service debt.
The bespoke unit forms one of up to fifteen adaptable commercial units which PRP has designed on this site.
The commercial lending markets have become increasingly introspective post 2008 and this trend is set to continue as the recommendations from the Vickers report on the banking sector are implemented.
It represents a £700,000 base for engineering skills in east Norfolk, which will provide training and apprenticeship opportunities for young people over the age of 14 and is set to open in September.
Core funding products have been repositioned over recent years. The Commercial Asset Finance and Leasing sector for example has significantly diminished with fewer lenders evidencing restricted appetite.
The centre will support students to develop careers in energy and advanced manufacturing and is being led by the East Consortium, with support from Norfolk County Council and Great Yarmouth Borough Council.
Finance and re-finance of commercial property for investment also represents a significant challenge to applicants and lenders alike. Current criteria are increasingly proving unworkable for new and existing funding. Property security which traditionally made ‘operating’ business attractive to a bank can more often be the ‘deal-breaker’ in the current banking climate. Indeed, security has never been a guarantee that funding can be achieved and even if it was, current business assets will almost certainly attract lower loans against a reduced asset value. There is some good news. B2B Cashflow Solutions and other consultants to the SME sector are thriving in the current climate because they can combine years of experience and creativity with the ability to resource ‘whole-life’ or ‘transactional’ cash solutions delivered through a diverse panel of banks, professional partners and specialist providers.

Technology takes the travel out of learning for businesses… The University of East Anglia (UEA) will unveil three innovative business development programmes offering professional support and mentoring to businesses across the region. Businesses will also be shown how to take their first steps into international trading. Yours Business Networks (YBN), which has centres in King’s Lynn, Cheshire and Gateshead, has
offered to be the platform for the UEA to launch these courses and bring distance learning to businesses across the country through the use of advanced video conferencing equipment. The YBN centres all boast HD video conference equipment which are supported by 100Mb broadband and allow businesses to access the live and interactive learning and training. According to Hayliegh Beckles, spokeswoman for YBN, the benefits of this approach are access to the best programmes and speakers, a platform to interact with other like-minded businesses, time and cost savings and access to global markets and supply chains. The programmes offered by The UEA include; Four months of business growth support targeting the growth in micro and small businesses - Business Growth Programme This is for micro and small businesses that have the potential and motivation to grow. This programme
runs over four months. It will involve five ‘hands on’ sessions led by professional business growth trainers and six hours of one-to-one mentoring with a professional, experienced mentor. These will support participants to develop and realise their business growth plans and strategies. The programme is designed for a maximum of 16 participants. The initial creation of the BGP was funded in 2010 by the European Union’s Interreg IVB North Sea Region Programme. Availability of research and development resources for all businesses - MBA Consultancy Programme Research and development is an important aspect of any business, but so often eats into executive management time. Dr Kevan Williams from the Norwich Business School will explain how MBA students can undertake bespoke consultancy projects over a range of businesses and provide focused development options from this research. First steps into International Business Management - International Business Management Placement Programme The University Business School can connect its foreign students to UK-based businesses who are considering internationalising. Through a 6-week period, students can familiarise themselves with the business that they are attached to and in turn that business will benefit from the insight that the student has gained in a particular market. Such an arrangement can, in certain circumstances, lead to a professional relationship between businesses and foreign students when they repatriate. For more information about the launch about any of the programmes or the launch please contact Hayliegh Beckles on 01553 611120 or kingslynn@yoursnetworks.co.uk

Meeting the challenges of the green revolution. Every business person is aware of the green agenda as the British Government and the European Union impose ever-more stringent carbon reduction targets on companies.
For all the growing awareness, however, there still remains much to be done, which will be the theme of the Chamber’s Sustainability 2012 Conference on May 10. Organised to engage the Norfolk business community, the event will help companies become more sustainable and more profitable, including examining new regional and local initiatives. One of the organisations arguing that more needs to be done is the Carbon Trust, which works with businesses to help implement green programmes. Dominic Burbidge, Senior Client Manager Carbon Trust Advisory, said: “Many business leaders, particularly CFOs, have seen the financial benefits of cutting emissions in their own organisations. However, when it comes to dealing with carbon emissions generated
The region’s energy sector is booming in every part of the supply chain. New opportunities in offshore gas, decommissioning, offshore wind and nuclear are collectively worth more than £50bn over the coming years.
upstream by suppliers and downstream by customers, there’s a different story to tell; currently, fewer than half of multi-nationals, forty per cent, are addressing these indirect carbon emissions, so are missing out on reaping considerable cost savings. “While CFOs may not see how this area is directly linked to their role, it would be very surprising if they weren’t familiar with the bottom line impact of suppliers demanding higher prices as they pass through the cost impact of rising commodity and energy prices. Or the potential top line impact, particularly in this economic climate, of consumers preferring and opting for innovative “green” products and services which have been enhanced to help them save money by consuming less energy or fuel in use.” Dominic argues that tackling such issues not only saves money but can improve a company’s image. He said: “Carbon is increasingly being seen by business stakeholders as a common currency for costing and valuing the impact that different business decisions have on both an organisation’s environmental and economic performance. “Monitoring carbon emissions can uncover a strong business case for change within a business as ultimately it can identify new ways to cut supply chain costs, respond to resource scarcity, reduce negative environmental impact and, ultimately, drive revenue. “Businesses that successfully embed value chain carbon analysis into everyday operations give themselves a massive advantage over competitors as they can drive out waste across the complete supply chain, and minimise energy and material use. CFOs who have identified the business case for these changes are likely to be recognised and rewarded for their foresight in addressing a complex issue that many are struggling to tackle.” Among initiatives supporting Norfolk companies to address such issues is the Low Carbon Innovation Fund (LCIF), based at the University of East Anglia, which last year announced an extra £4.5m to extend it to creative industries wishing to reduce their carbon emissions through inward investment. Investments in low carbon products and services will continue; the Fund has more than 25 live applications in the pipeline at the moment. This addition to the existing fund of £8 million from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) will be matched by private
THE MAGAZINE OF NORFOLK CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY
investment and means that 30 million in all will be invested in businesses in the East of England. Dr Richard Harvey, Dean of UEA London and Chair of the LCIF Investment Committee, said: “In tough times, it is very pleasing to be able to be able to invest in the region’s creative industries. This is the first time that LCIF venture funding has been available in the region for companies such as film studios and game developers to develop ways of changing to become low carbon organisations.” Vice-Chancellor Edward Acton said: “The creative industries make a tremendous contribution to the eastern region and the University itself plays an important role in this field. We have many graduates working in the media, the arts, film and computer design, for example. “I am delighted that we are able to give businesses working in these areas the benefit of our long-standing expertise in carbon reduction programmes, in addition to the support we are already providing for energy and engineering companies.” LCIF aims to provide 40% of funding for each investment, the remaining 60% from private coinvestment. More information is available at www.lowcarbonfund.co.uk. Another recent encouraging sign was the announcement that the region’s energy sector can benefit from a new £2.2m programme of support from the East of England Energy Group (EEEGR), the industry association for energy in the East of England, representing more than 350 members. The programme, part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), will allow EEEGR to deliver development programmes to SMEs across the low carbon energy industries in the East of England. Announcing the news, John Best, CEO of EEEGR said: “The region’s energy sector is booming in every part of the supply chain. New opportunities in offshore gas, decommissioning, offshore wind and nuclear are collectively worth more than £50bn over the coming years. We are delighted to launch this new programme at a time when the business opportunities across the energy sector in this region are at their greatest.” And the challenges will just keep coming; the current EU target is for member states to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2020, but a European Commission report out in late January examined the potential to increase that to 30%. Campaigning organisations such as the RSPB and WWF can see the sense in such a move.

Martin Harper, Director of Conservation at RSPB, said: “The UK must build on its climate commitments and, with others in the EU, move to supporting climate targets in line with the science. An EU move to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2020 is an important first step.” Dr Kat Watts, WWF’s Principal Advisor, Global Climate Policy, said: “This report shows clearly that greater ambition on reducing emissions has clear economic, as well as social and environmental benefits.” For more information on the EEEGR initiative telephone 01493 446535, or Nautilus Associates at supplychain@eeegr.com or 01502 509266.

Waste not want not.
Educating the next generation. One way to ensure that the environmental message gets through is by educating the next generation of workers. Carbon reduction is one of the themes of a new £700,000 base for engineering skills in east Norfolk.
An artist’s impression of the Willows site
Another organisation pushing forward the environmental agenda is Norfolk County Council, which recently secured confirmation from DEFRA of a £169m Waste Infrastructure grant for the power and recycling centre proposed for the Willows site at Saddlebow, King’s Lynn. The plant, which would be operated by the Cory Wheelabrator consortium, is currently going through the planning and environmental permits process but it is envisaged that it would: n Treat 268,000 tonnes a year, which would include 170,000 tonnes of Norfolk’s residents’ residual waste and 98,000 tonnes of waste from local businesses, so providing a lower cost waste disposal option for the commercial sector n Save Norfolk council taxpayers at least £200m over the 25 year life of the contract
compared with the cost of using landfill to dispose of the waste n Generate enough electricity for 36,000 homes and the potential to supply cheap heat for local businesses. Thousands of tonnes of materials for recycling - mainly metals and construction materials - would also be recovered each year. The council is working hard to improve recycling rates in other areas as well. In addition to the recently-opened facility in Dereham, the council is planning a new Recycling Centre to replace the existing one for the Thetford area, which is due to open in Spring 2013. Plans for a replacement recycling centre at Caister, for residents in the Great Yarmouth/west Norfolk area, are also well under way. Councillor Bill Borrett, the Cabinet Member for Environment and Waste, said: “Norfolk’s joint waste strategy is much broader than an energy from waste plant which will, after all, deal just with that part of our waste that’s left over. “Our strategy is really a much bigger picture that requires us all to work hard to reduce, reuse and recycle as much as we possibly can and we want to continue working with all our local government colleagues in Norfolk on this very important agenda.”

The Nexus Centre, which will provide training and apprenticeship opportunities for young people over the age of 14, is to open in September and will cater for students developing careers in energy and advanced manufacturing. Led by the East Consortium, which is made up of 11 schools and colleges in the east of the county, and supported by Norfolk County Council and Great Yarmouth Borough Council, the project is supported by Government funding for vocational education. The new centre, which will be on Beacon Park, Gorleston, Great Yarmouth, part of the New Anglia Enterprise Zone, will include an energy/ renewables laboratory. Among those welcoming it has been George Denby, headteacher of Caister High School, who said: “In the Great Yarmouth area we are fortunate to have more than 400 companies involved in the energy and advanced manufacturing industry and we want to work as closely as possible with those companies to ensure our students can make the most of the opportunities they present. “Young people are facing an increasingly tough jobs market and we want to give them access to the skills and knowledge that will help them to stand out from the crowd.” Councillor Steve Ames, Leader of Great Yarmouth Borough Council, said: “With the Enterprise Zone further aiding our emerging offshore and engineering markets, we need to ensure that our young people in the borough are equipped to be able to access the employment opportunities that are arising both now and in the future.” *Material from Carbon Trust reproduced with kind permission from the Trust.

Sustainability 2012
Suffolk Chamber of Commerce The Ultimate Business Network
10 May, John Innes Centre, Norwich – 8.30-15.00
Now in its third year, this year’s Sustainability conference offers delegates from sole trader, SME and large corporate companies an opportunity to understand, and therefore realise, the benefits from the changing policies and fiscal drivers set by the government for sustainable development and economic growth in Norfolk and the UK. Unlike previous years, Sustainability 2012 will focus on two key areas; Low Carbon Technologies and Built Environment Innovation, with clear distinction between how small and large companies need to react and plan for a range of new initiatives. There is massive potential within these two aspects of sustainability and the conference will be the platform to really get to grips with the
economic opportunities associated with resilience which overarches the practical implementation and delivery of sustainable development. Delegates will be offered a global insight into the need for sustainable development, the UK and regional perspectives as well as county-based opportunities. There will be a wide choice of learning and participatory
workshops in order to significantly raise the awareness of impending and forthcoming initiatives. In addition, the conference incorporates an exhibition which highlights new products and innovations. Sustainability 2012 will provide an opportunity to fully understand the green growth areas and other supply chain opportunities fit for small and large enterprises alike.
Expert speakers: Gunter’s Presentation: ‘Redefining competitiveness by changing the rules of the game’ The main challenge of the ‘Green Economy’ is that it requires companies to invest more and consumers to pay more. This is justified when the world economy is expanding and unemployment is decreasing, but is a more difficult strategy when demand drops, consumer confidence dwindles and people know their jobs are in jeopardy.
Gunter Pauli Gunter is an entrepreneur, lecturer, author and commentator on culture, science, politics, sustainability and the environment.
The aim of The ‘Blue Economy’ is to stimulate entrepreneurs to bring innovations to the market that has been inspired by the way ecosystems work; moving from the core business competencies to the search for a bundle of activities where the best is cheap, social capital is built and everyone aims to meet the basic needs of everyone else.
Other speakers include: George Padelopoulos, Sustainability Manager, Ethical Trade, B&Q Tom McGarry, Communications Manager, Sizewell C, EDF Energy Jonathan Cage, MD, Create Consulting Engineers Paul Bourgeois, Director, Zero Carbon Britain John French, CEO Adapt Low Carbon Group Mark Pendlington, Director of Corporate Affairs, Anglian Water The event will be Chaired by Andy Wood, CEO of Adnams
The conference will include lunch and networking opportunities. For more information and to book your place or a stand go to www.sustainability2012.com or call 01603 625977. Sponsors supported by

CORPORATE HOSPITALITY
Reasons to be cheerful in the world of corporate hospitality. ADVERTISING FEATURE
Corporate entertainment can be one of those investments that come under pressure in tight economic times, but there is plenty of reason to hope that 2012 could turn out to be a good year for the sector. The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in June and the London Olympics in late July running into August will both be feel-good events that will offer all kinds of opportunities for businesses, particularly those close to the Capital. At a time when some corporate hospitality sectors are battling an economic downturn, the events could offer a timely boost. According to market researchers MBD, the sector is already holding up well. Last Summer, the company released a major survey into the hospitality market which suggested that its value was expected to increase by 2% during 2011. This was believed to have reflected an increase in demand from businesses in the UK as they began to feel a little more confident. That figure is in sharp contrast to 2009, when a 5% decline took turnover to a five year low of £933 million. This was attributed to lower levels of spending on corporate hospitality by businesses seeking to minimise costs by cutting back on marketing and related activities.
The turnaround started happening in 2010 when a one per cent growth was recorded. Prior to 2009, sales growth was recorded in each year between 2006 and 2008, with turnover peaking at £1045 million in the latter year, driven by a series of major sporting events. MBD predicts that demand for corporate hospitality will continue to stay strong in some areas because of the positive effects of the London 2012 Olympic Games and 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. That increase is expected to gather pace as the events approach. There is reason to believe that the Queen’s Jubilee could have a similar effect. The statistics underline what has been known for a long time, that companies are prepared to invest in corporate hospitality if they can see something to be gained from it. The recent increase in growth underlined the importance that business still places on showing clients and staff alike that there is life after work. One key reason for the sector’s enduring popularity is that it allows firms to maintain relationships with clients. In a fast-moving age dominated by the Internet, texting and Cloud Computing, the personal touch is still highly valued. Often it is when client and customer are together, watching a sporting event or enjoying a good meal, that business is done, that relationships are forged and deals are struck. Creating that kind of environment takes many forms. For many companies, it often revolves around sporting events, a trip to the races, a day at the cricket, perhaps a meal followed by watching a football match. There are other options, trips and teambuilding events among them. The key to them all is time away from the office and a sense that the company staging the corporate hospitality values those whom it has invited.

Automatic enrolment – What it means to you. ADVERTISING FEATURE
When you think about 2012, what do you think of? Possibly the Olympic Games being held in London?
When I think about 2012, I think about people being enrolled for the first time into a workplace pension. Beginning next October for employees of the biggest companies, and gradually including workers in the smallest firms – this change will have a massive effect on saving in this country. Here is what we are doing and why. Eleven million of us will live to be 100. We are now spending around a quarter of our lives in retirement. Yet at the same time, we as a society have never been saving less for our later lives. Currently, only one in three workers in the private sector is contributing to a workplace pension. Young people often prefer to save for a house instead of a pension. And the end result is that people simply are not prepared for their retirement and could find themselves poorer as a result. Clearly something needs to be done. We know that people want to save, but too often it becomes something to think about another day. And as we all know, the sooner you begin to save, the better. This is why every employee over the age of 22 and earning above the PAYE threshold – that’s over £7,475 (2011/12 tax year) a year – will be put automatically into a workplace pension. If the company you work for has a pension scheme already, then you could be enrolled into that scheme. If not, then your employer will have to pick an appropriate pension scheme. We have made that easy for them by creating NEST (National Employment Savings Trust) as a low cost, easy to use option, which is run on a not-forprofit basis and designed especially for people new to pension saving. Having a pension means that you will be expected to pay into it. We will start small, with 1% of your pay going into the pension, and it will eventually go up to 4%. And yes, we realise that in these tough times, every little bit counts and a 4% reduction in your pay packet will seem like a lot. But the key to workplace pensions is that your employer will have to contribute as well. And we will also help, by giving you an additional 1% in tax relief. This will mean that eventually you will be putting 8% of your pay aside for your retirement. Depending on how much you save now, this may seem like a lot or it may seem like not
enough. You will of course have the option of contributing more to your pension as you earn more, and it’s important to remember that you will have the option of opting out at any time. If you feel saving isn’t right for you, we will not force you. However, after three years, we will come back and try again. Hopefully, it will be the right time for you to save. These changes will make it as straightforward as possible for you to get saving for your retirement. Saving will be automatic, you will put money aside, and your employer will contribute too. The basic State Pension will always be there, and these changes will ensure that people have the opportunity to save on top of it for the lifestyle they want in retirement.
What you need to know: The new employer duties are planned to come into force from October 1. Under these duties, employers will have to: n enrol eligible workers into a qualifying workplace pension arrangement; n make a minimum 3% contribution towards a defined contribution scheme (based on qualifying pensionable earnings) or NEST (the National Employment Savings Trust); or n offer membership of a defined benefit scheme or certain hybrid scheme which either has a contracting out statement or meets the test scheme standard. An eligible worker is an employee aged between 22 and state pension age and earning above the income tax personal allowance (£7,475 in 2011/12). Contributions will be payable on earnings between £5,035 and £33,540.
will not have will to comply until January 1, 2016, at the very earliest, but as late as April 2017. The Forum’s Chief Executive, Phil Orford, said: “We welcome the Government’s clarification on the dates for auto-enrolment. This temporary delay will allow small firms to now focus fully on running their business until the economy is back in firmer territory. “We believe this will also allow small business the extra time to plan for and subsequently implement the scheme successfully.”
Minimum contributions Where a worker is automatically enrolled, there will be a minimum contribution of 8% of qualifying earnings, of which the employer must pay a minimum of 3%. If the employer chooses to pay the minimum 3%, the worker will pay 4%, with a further 1% paid as tax relief by the government. (Qualifying earnings is earnings between £5,035 and £33,540). Minimum contribution levels will be phased in between October 2012 and October 2017.
Opting Out Workers will be able to opt-out of their employer’s scheme if they choose not to participate. More information can be obtained on www.pensionsadvisoryservice.org.uk/future-pensionreforms/auto-enrolment Or: www.thepensionsregulator.gov.uk/employers/7-steps. aspx
Employers will also have an ongoing duty to maintain qualifying pension provision for workers who; n are already members of qualifying schemes; or n become members of such schemes.
The phased introduction of AutoEnrolment Although new duties come in from 1 October, individual employers’ own duties will be introduced gradually over the following years and will be based on the size of the employer, typically by PAYE size. Confirmation that the Government’s autoenrolment pension scheme has been pushed back for SMEs has been welcomed by the Forum of Private Business. Firms employing between 30 and 49 staff will not now have to enrol staff until August 1, 2015 at the earliest. Those businesses with fewer than 30 staff

Recession – what does it mean for Norfolk? ADVERTISING FEATURE Many commentators are predicting a gloomy forecast for 2012. Following the banking crisis in 2008 and, latterly, the collapse in confidence in the European markets, a consensus seems to be emerging that the economy will be in for a ‘double dip’ in the near future. There is a wide range David Missen, Partner of opinions as to whether the second dip will be a gaping chasm or a mere undulation; few experts are predicting anything very positive. What does this mean for Norfolk? No part of the country will be immune from recession and this will tend to mean reduced public and private spending, lower business profits and, in some cases, business failures and redundancies. However, the fundamentals for East Anglia are probably better than they are for most parts of the country. We have a vibrant agricultural sector which operates in a separate economy from the main economy. Although the 2010/11 results were difficult, the position is still much better than it was

ten years ago and there is a certain amount of optimism, reinforced by rising world food prices and supportive banking. This has a knock-on effect for other related sectors, since, when farmers make money, they spend it on machinery, building work and diversification projects and, more importantly, they tend to spend locally. The region also benefits to some extent because it is not a big recipient of the public money which will be cut over the next few years. Of course, there is a public sector element but, compared with other parts of the country, the influence (and the potential for cuts) is proportionately less. The third factor which helps East Anglia is that it has, in recent years, increasingly become a destination for wealthy retirees. This has a downside in that it pushes up the prices of local property and can lead to ‘ghost villages’ but, on the other hand, it brings funds into the region which are generated elsewhere but spent locally. Because of the age profile, the retirees often tend to spend more heavily on local services, so we have the position where, for example, a pension which was earned in London may end up being spent in North Norfolk.

There seems to be little doubt that there will be a national recession in 2012, but national statistics only show an average position and therefore do not necessarily reflect regional variations. If one draws an imaginary line from the Wash to the Severn, the pattern may be very different above and below it, as any visitor to Burnham Market and Birmingham would testify. Rather like the EU itself, the UK experiences enormous local variations and from the Norfolk perspective we hope that any recession may be both shallow and temporary. NORFOLK VOICE
Unlock growth with our new community website. Q A
Will this be a members only website?
The Norfolk Chamber of Commerce is launching a brand new website to give Norfolk businesses an extra tool to help them unlock growth in their organisations.
For the benefit of our members’ profiles and the wider business community, we will be allowing non members to register on the site so they can join in discussions and access helpful information. But this is restricted. Only members have a business profile, can upload articles and access our members’ services and benefits.
Q A
What’s next on the horizon for the Norfolk Chamber?
As I said before, the Chamber is evolving and we hope the new site will enable our members to take one extra step to unlocking growth. It’s important that we create a site that can evolve with us. We can adapt the site and make additions that would benefit our members, but is important that we receive feedback from our members so we can continue to support them.
The new site has been developed with the business community in mind to give Chamber members even greater opportunities to raise their profile, make new connections and access business training, knowledge and services. The Norfolk Chamber’s membership manager Chris Perry answers some of the key questions about the new site, and how it will benefit Norfolk businesses.
Q A
What prompted the Norfolk Chamber to create a new website?
As with all businesses in the current economical climate, we needed to look at new ways to diversify and serve the needs of our customers and the wider business community. As the business community is evolving, so must the Chamber evolve and keep up to date with new technologies, such as all social media channels, so we set about designing a site which directly meets the needs of our members.
Q
Which areas did you identify that Norfolk business needed from the Chamber site?
A
Norfolk businesses join the Chamber for many reasons, but we tried to focus on six main areas to assist our members: n New ways of building connections and increasing business profile n Easy access to business knowledge and training n Saving money by accessing our business services and benefits n Keeping businesses up to date on our events and conferences n Easy access to our international and export services. n A conduit for members wanting information on business policy, local business knowledge and supporting the community.
Q A
What new features can the business community look forward to seeing?
The whole site has been re-designed to be far more visual, interactive and community based. We have enhanced the feature which allows members to upload their own stories and news articles, so that they can now be rated and discussed by the business community. This tool will allow a business to really increase their profile by encouraging discussions and allowing professionals to offer top tips and industry news to assist the other members .The top rated articles will be given increased profile, so it will encourage members to be innovative about the content. This opens up a whole new possibility of linking supply chains and keeping our members up to date on new projects and developments around Norfolk. I must point out, however, that this is not for free advertising, so please keep the articles topical and interesting. The need for advice and knowledge is growing, so we will also be making the access to knowledge easier by breaking it down to areas such as access to skills and training seminars, HR and legal knowledge and services. £100,000-plus salaries revealed for Norfolk’s Group Finance Directors. Salaries reaching £120,000 for Group Finance Directors can be achieved in Norfolk according to the annual Salary Survey by Chamber member and recruitment specialist Cooper Lomaz.
The Cooper Lomaz Salary Survey, now in its ninth year, compares Norfolk salaries against those in Suffolk, Essex and Cambridge. It focuses on eight employment sectors, including accountancy, engineering, food manufacturing, human resources, information technology, oil, gas and renewable energy, sales & marketing and supply chain. The survey reveals salaries of up to £120,000 for Group Finance Directors, £100,000 for Finance Directors, £60,000 for Financial Controllers and salaries up to £45,000 for Finance Managers. Elsewhere, the number of job opportunities in the oil, gas and renewable sector in Norfolk are expected to increase. Jane Lovell, pictured right, co-founder and joint managing director of Cooper Lomaz, said: “Businesses in the oil, gas and renewable energy sector are paving the way for the many projects planned along our coastline. “From offshore wind farms and gas production to carbon capture and bio-energy projects, employers will be looking to strengthen their workforce in Norfolk.” In Norfolk, the Salary Survey reveals there have been fewer Human Resources roles available in the past 12 months and noticeable lower salary levels. This is being attributed to the cost of fuel in rural areas, influencing how far people are prepared to travel for work. Norfolk’s IT sector has seen a significant increase in vacancies, largely a result of innovation and investment in technology to enable growth and drive down operating costs. In particular there is a real shortage of Java and PHP specialists in the county.

CHAMBER NEWS
While Britain dithers on aviation expansion, other European countries are forging ahead. As an island nation, and one with such a magnificent history of trading with international markets, the UK’s air links with its economic partners are essential.
These vital arteries provide the lifeblood for the UK economy, allowing UK businesses to export their goods and services to the world and overseas companies to bring inward investment. This translates into jobs and prosperity for the whole country. All of this, however, is currently under threat. While Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Madrid build more capacity at their hub airports, Britain dithers. New data reveals the true extent of the problem. More than two-thirds of business leaders in Brazil, India, China, Mexico and South Korea report that better air connections with other European cities would make them more likely to do business there. In 2009, the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) estimated that for every year expansion of hub capacity was resisted, the country’s economy loses around £1bn. This must be compared with direct economic benefits of between £8.6bn and £12.8bn and wider economic benefits of £20bn for allowing extra runway capacity at Heathrow. Our survey data supports this, with 62 per cent of respondents saying they would only consider trading with the UK in the future if flight connections to their home markets are strengthened. The current movement, however, is in the opposite direction, with the number of
destinations served by Heathrow declining by around 25 per cent over the past two decades. This trend will cause the UK to miss out on economic growth, as its inability to accommodate new routes to emerging markets is hampered. This is the view of 64 per cent of those who responded to our survey. While our members welcome the ambition displayed by the recent announcement on a possible 4-runway airport in the Thames Estuary, this so far unfunded project will take 20 years to
A ‘super’ evening. We had a fantastic turnout for our Super Bowl Challenge on 26 January. Eighty six people attended Namco FunScape, in Norwich, and formed 15 teams, all battling it out to receive the coveted trophy. After a nail-biting
contest the team from Price Bailey emerged as the winners. Well done to them, and thank you to everyone who came along and made it such a memorable evening. We will be holding a series of new evening networking events from April, so keep an eye on our website to find out what’s going on.

deliver. What is to be done in the meantime to solve the UK’s capacity crunch? The BCC is a strong supporter of measures such as high speed rail and better use of excess capacity at our regional airports. Indeed the former will bring Birmingham Airport to within a 38 minute journey of Heathrow, providing some much-needed alleviation there. Further phases to the North of England and Scotland will also bring our airports closer together, which could reduce the need for internal flights. At most, however, this will only release around nine per cent of slots at Heathrow – capacity that will be instantly consumed given current levels of demand, which see airlines selling landing rights for more than £30m per pair. In less than a third of the time and for one tenth of the cost of an estuary airport, a new runway at Heathrow would show that the UK is serious about staying connected to the world through the extra capacity it would provide. Only then will the government’s boasts about Britain being open for business ring truer.

TAKE A BREAK
Ridley Pinstripe. Sudoku Mar-Apr
It’s 9.30am on Monday at the offices of Barking, Madd and Madd. A fairly moribund atmosphere because it’s too close to the weekend for anyone to think of getting any work done. There has been some excitement already, though. As I think I have mentioned before, my position as Assistant to the Assistant (Stationery) in the Stock Control Department gives me a unique insight into the inner machinations of the company. So when I heard last week that management wanted to order a new batch of black-edged paper, I realised that something big was afoot.
Answers in the next edition
And so it proved, because just after 9.30 this morning we received a memo headed Cutbacks. Well, I say headed Cutbacks. Whoever put it together had initially tried to head it Austerity but after trying to spell it Osterity, Ousterity and Austria (damn spellcheckers) they had settled for Cutbacks, forgetting unfortunately to remove the earlier efforts.
Sudoku Answers Jan-Feb
Anyway, the note was from our owner from what appeared to be an address suggesting he was writing from a cell at Barbados Jail but was, I am sure, just a misprint. In the missive, our glorious leader indicated that a ’sudden cash flow fluctuation scenario’ meant that we would have to plunge into immediate Osterity/Ousterity/Austria measures. To be honest, this was not a major surprise; everyone had seen the writing on the wall. The writing in question had said: ‘We regret that the Canteen is closing until further notice due to Oster…’ well, you get the idea. The owner’s missive, which was rather strangely signed Prisoner Number 513, concluded with the news that a team of Change Facilitation and Management Specialists would be coming into the factory to assess ways of making savings.
Cartoons to name those people losing their jobs ahead of the formal announcement, as this would be unfair. The identities of those to be made redundant would be revealed at briefings the following morning. In theory, this meant that no one knew who was for the chop. Or rather, it should have done, except for the fact that within an hour we had all received further letters which revealed that most of us were to go to the main hall on the following morning and 86 people had to go to Room P45 on the second floor.
We had only just stopped reading the memo when the Change Facilitation and Management Specialists (they look remarkably like removal men) burst into the office and took away half the desks, two filing cabinets, a wastepaper basket and Old George, who had fallen asleep half way through filling in a purchase report the previous week and had not yet woken up again.
Which room was I directed to, you might ask? Well, dear reader, it will come as no surprise to you that I was directed to the main hall. As I have said before, green marker pens do not buy themselves.
Within half an hour, we all received a letter saying that, as a result of the initial findings of the review, there was a need for further job losses. The letter said that the company did not wish

The four ‘ages’ of the Internet. ADVERTISING FEATURE
The internet is evolving and our use of it has changed too. It may seem that it has been around ‘forever’, but reality is that it is quite new. 15 years ago Google hadn’t even launched, 20 years ago many offices didn’t even have computers. That evolution has led us to think of the Internet in four, quite distinct, ages.
1980-1989 – The Age of Invention In 1980 virtually nobody had a computer at home and, if there was anything akin to a computer in the office it was more than likely a ‘word processor’. A machine that secretaries would use to create typed documents that could be edited on screen and then printed and stored for future use. Some people had a Sinclair ZX80 or a BBC Micro, but these were reserved purely for games that would be meticulously typed into the computer and stored on cassette tapes. In the mid-1980s PCs became available through machines like the Amstrad 1512 – very advanced for its day with 512 kilobytes of memory! Advanced users started to use services like Compuserve or Prestel which they would connect to via a modem and access their ‘mailbox’.
1990-1999 – The Age of Utility In the 1990s computers became common in the workplace. Some started to be ‘networked’ so that they could ‘talk’ to each other and share files and printers. TCP/IP was emerging as a
common ‘protocol’ for communication and businesses, mainly in the IT industry, started to create very basic Internet websites. The use of word processors and spreadsheets in the office became more common and the computer began to take hold in business as a ‘must have’.
2000-2009 – The Age of Necessity By the turn of the millennium almost everyone was using a computer either at work or at home. No longer did people look at a book or visit a library to look things up, they just went online and ‘Googled’ what they wanted to know, getting instant results.
Our shopping habits changed forever. We didn’t plan a visit to the shops to look for that elusive item we wanted. We went online and found the cheapest Internet site to buy it. We stopped going to the travel agents to browse the brochures for our annual holiday, we simply went online and booked it there – probably with a budget airline that only sells its seats online!
2010-Now – The Age of Maturity We don’t even dream of working without a computer. Every business, no matter what it does, has some reliance on the computer. Whether it is running the accounts, the payroll, or advertising what the business does. Whether it is providing an online service, or just a way for our customers to contact us, in some way we rely on a computer. Computers have changed too. In 1990 a high specification computer would have cost around £8,000 to buy and cost around £70 per year to run. A basic server now costs around £2,000 to buy and costs £1,100 per year to run. The cost of the computer is no longer the issue, it is the cost of the electricity to power it. Sentry42, the Norwich based data centre is designed, built and run to very high environmental standards. That means that it costs less to run the computers installed within it. If you would like to know more about how you can save your business money, talk to Sentry42 on 08451 424242 or email info@sentry42.com

its programme of community engagement and to offer more opportunities, in particular for children and young people, to participate in free events and activities.
Since joining the Festival, William has put in place plans to create an international destination festival bringing an exceptional programme of specially-commissioned performances and work to the region each May, including a recordbreaking number of UK and world premieres.
William said: “We cannot achieve any, or all, of this on our own. Partnerships continue to be central to our development. We will never be able to achieve our goals without the full involvement of those artists and companies with whom we work and collaborate.
New for 2012 will be an extended Festival season through the summer, featuring a two-week sound and visual art experience on the north Norfolk coast in August.
“At the same time, we need to recognise the important role the Festival plays in supporting the cultural economy. The Festival brings a major return on investment to the wider economy, but it’s also instrumental in putting Norwich and Norfolk on the map as an inspirational place to live and work, ensuring that we continue to attract and retain talented staff, as well as bringing audiences from outside of Norfolk to our region.”
The Festival is seeing its permanent staff grow by almost one third, including a number of senior level appointments, such as new Associate Producer Patrick Dickie, who worked with English National Opera, and Mikey Martins, who is recognised nationally as an authority on outdoor performance.
