The Ideal Support Wigan-based Ideal Business Services is one of the many North West IT companies that has been supported by Business Link Northwest. has already won similar contracts with neighbouring Caribbean islands.

Business Link Northwest Digital and Creative Adviser, Ian Dunkerley, has supported Ideal Business Services’ penetration of the overseas market and recommended that they contact UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) to help them achieve more international work. Following this the directors took an intensive course called Passport to Export to equip them with the skills they need to achieve more overseas work.

For Ideal Business Services, the Caribbean is not a far off and exotic location, but more of a home from home. The company has successfully developed bespoke software solutions for the air and shipping ports in St Lucia and has now opened a second office over there. Since then, Ideal Business Services

We found that the financial side of the business required attention, we needed to look into promoting our achievements with public relations and our website needed revamping.

THE STORY SO FAR...

Merit was started in 1988 in order to address the IT related issues being experienced at that time by some of the larger organisations based in the region. The demand for computing power to help drive the business processes within these organisations was immense yet there were issues surrounding the local supply and availability of technology and the all important expertise to tackle projects.

Merit took the lead in seeking out and bringing technology solutions to share amongst its members and others. Over the years this formula proved to be very successful and organisations were able to get information about solutions for their organisations. Often, the success, or otherwise, of these adopted IT solutions was fed back through the Merit knowledge sharing forum which in itself proved to be valuable in terms of organisations being able to make better informed choices about the right solutions; often saving them time and money.

As time went by and the larger organisations improved their IT capability Merit’s focus was drawn to the greater need now developing in the much larger SME sector. Merit was able to take advantage of the public funding available to support SMEs and along with partners such as the local chambers of commerce and universities, Merit was able to deliver much needed technology projects to the SME sector bringing them knowledge, capability and the much needed skills helping them to become more productive increasing their competitiveness and growth potential.

TECHNOLOGY SEMINARS Currently Merit works across the North West to promote best practice in the use of IT in all organisations, bringing the maximum benefits achievable with appropriate technology and employees with the right level of skills to manage and use the technology effectively.

Going forward Merit will build upon its past successes in assisting businesses to achieve the most benefit from their investments in technology by continuing to deliver the Merit Seminar programme promoting best practice use in IT. The programme delivers technology seminars that are both informative and enlightening; and offers delegates the opportunity to ask experts questions pertinent to their needs. Delegates also have the opportunity to build their network of contacts and can share their experiences and solutions with colleagues from other organisations who face the same challenges as them.

Trying to keep ahead of, or at least up with, your competitors, keeping your customers so happy that they want to come back for more; keeping your suppliers happy by ordering plenty and paying them on time; keeping the books up to date to keep the accountant happy; and most important of all, the staff, for without this bunch of highly skilled, highly motivated and professional individuals our businesses would not survive.

It can sometimes feel like you’re working in isolation with little or no support except for some correspondence from your bank or the tax man telling you that they’re really you’re friend and they’re there to ‘help you’.

It’s no small wonder that we dream of a simpler life on a beach without a worry in the world, no customers, no competitors, no staff, no banks, no tax man; no chance!

The reality is that all businesses, no matter how large or how small, all face the same difficulties and challenges; managing to survive and hopefully succeed in an ever increasingly competitive world. Despite the challenges each of us has to deal with on a daily basis there is a real friend willing and able to help us manage not only the monotonous and onerous tasks we need to perform just to keep the business machine ticking over, but to lend a hand making it possible for our businesses to become more competitive, develop and grow by enabling them to be efficient, low cost and productive.

We, of course, are referring to ICT (Information and Communications Technology) in all of its forms, hardware; software; applications; PDAs; smart phones; mobiles; laptops; desktops; voice and data networks (LANs, WANs, WiFi, WiMax) and of course the Internet. But more importantly, how these digital technologies are harnessed by businesses to help deliver the business strategy and that all important competitive advantage.

These ‘Digital Decade’ technologies are converging to deliver the ‘Connected Experience’ for both consumer and business alike and at the same time helping to drive the ‘Digital Inclusion’ and ‘Flexible Working’ agendas enabling everybody to participate equally in both business and society.

So what exactly are these technologies and how can we use them to enhance our business performance?

Connectivity is the key to enabling these technologies, whether that’s directly to each other, via the Internet or a private network. Access to the Internet has dramatically increased at both consumer and business levels in the past few years stimulating the market in online applications for both business and leisure activities. We are now seeing the beginnings of a seamless merging of our private and business lives, no longer are we tied to time and place for our work, technology has enabled flexible and remote working so that it’s a real possibility to work anytime, anyplace, anywhere. The technological barriers have been breached, its now time for a paradigm shift in cultural and business management attitudes to take full advantage of the opportunities offered by technologies such as wireless, VoIP, online applications accessed via the Internet and hand held devices such as Blackberry, XDA and iphone.

Applications delivered via the Internet are on the increase with businesses demanding new ways of accessing, managing and deploying software. The prevalence of this type of application has been in areas such as CRM, marketing applications to deliver and manage e-mail campaigns and newsletters, off-site data backup and restore, and more recently the virtualisation of the desktop enabling users to access their whole desktop including applications and data remotely.

Devices from laptops and PDAs to smart phones enable users to work just effectively away from the office; with a client, a collaborative partner, at home or anywhere a wireless connection is available.

These devices are converging to give voice, data and applications in one small portable device, making easier and quicker to respond to customers and colleagues alike; and in this always connected ‘Digital Decade’ it could mean the difference between success or a missed opportunity.

Digital technologies have slowly and stealthily entered into our world over the past few decades without us paying too much attention to them. They have crept into every part of our daily lives, from work to leisure and healthcare to learning; they’re there benignly working away to improve our lives.

They have crept into every part of our daily lives, from work to leisure and healthcare to learning; they’re there benignly working away to improve our lives.

In recent years this arrival has increased in both pace and variety from its first appearance in our lives as strange looking machines in the workplace, cash machines in the street [another Liverpool first], computer controlled traffic lights [who can forget the chaos caused by Benny Hill as the ‘eccentric’ professor Peach tampering with Turin’s computer controlled traffic light system in the 1969 classic the Italian Job in order to create the sort of traffic jam nightmare we face today?]. But not to worry, digital technology has a solution to ease the burden of this daily trial; congestion charging, on its way to a city near you very soon!

But it’s not all bad news; digital technology is not just there to assist the authorities to punish us more easily for our minor transgressions and the councils to extract even more of your hard earned cash for very little effort [it just seems that way some times], it can be used for the power of good too and help make our lives easier and hopefully less stressful.

Take your average small business employing several people, all on the 9 to 5 treadmill, working in the same office, travelling in their own single occupied car for an average journey time of 45 minutes to travel 10 to 12 miles each way 5 days a week. Why? Well because that the way things are! The business is run from this office, the computers are there, the telephones are there and so are all the files and records. The boss is there too, because this is his [or her] domain where he [she] is the master in complete control of all they survey and its the way things are done, because that’s the way they’ve always been done, and while employees are sat at their desks [where they can be seen by the boss] they’re working productively and efficiently helping the business to grow; aren’t they?

As a good example of appropriate use, and a little leap of faith, why not bring about a step change in your business and use digital technology to enable your workforce to work flexibly; from home or anywhere else for that matter? The technology is widely available, and it’s relatively inexpensive, and with the right training businesses can manage it themselves without too much fuss and with increased productivity as demonstrated by most studies into this mode of working. “But what about the health & safety implications?” I hear some people ask; yes there are some basic requirements to put in place, but this is often put forward by management as a reason why they can’t allow their people to work remotely; and more times than not it’s a poor excuse for poor management who don’t trust and can’t manage their staff effectively.

Arming your workforce with technology enabling them to work remotely can improve productivity considerably. Giving them the ability to process workflow quicker by remotely being able to accept orders, raise invoices, process payments and deliver higher levels of customer satisfaction by being able to respond quickly, efficiently and accurately to customer demands will all impact significantly on your bottom line – or that of you competitors if you don’t act quickly enough.

Its not rocket science, the digital technologies required to enable business growth are available hear and now, all you need to do as a business owner/manager is to HARNESS them. Find out what technology is out there to suit your particular business need, get some advice, get some demonstrations of the available solutions, see if there’s any business support available in form of advice, guidance and grants. Research your business sector to find out what the industry standard applications are.

What are the alternatives? What is the competition doing? What are you going to do?

There can be no doubt, harnessing the right digital technology, for some of the key functional areas of your business can reap many benefits for your business, your employees and most importantly for your customers.

So there you have it! It’s a win/win situation all round; and it’s good for the environment too, less travel, less pollution, less CO2, reducing your carbon footprint. And with less demand on paper and print resources, it keeps tree huggers happy too!

HOW TO BUY IT Merit believes that the old axiom ‘Caveat Emptor’, or ‘let the buyer beware’, has no place when sourcing new technology. Merit wants individuals, businesses and organisations to be confident that their decision making process has been helped by virtue of the fact that some effort has been made by them to research the market, and the claims of suppliers, by undertaking some very simple ‘due diligence’ and ‘best practice’ steps.

Prospective purchasers should always exercise caution whenever selecting a new supplier, especially if they are making a significant purchase in terms of cost and criticality to business processes. As a rough guide the following areas should be addresses carefully:
