2016ANNUALCONFERENCEPREVIEW
A platform for pride It's Martin Baggs
Institute of Water Conference Chair and Chief Executive Officer, Thames Water
As chairman of the Institute of Water conference, I am delighted to invite you to this year’s event, which takes place in Birmingham on 12 and 13 May 2016. The conference, ‘It’s Water We Do Best’, will highlight the immense pride across our industry in the service we deliver every day. Through talks, exhibits and interactive speaker sessions, this two-day event will provide a platform to discuss a wide range of live topics for our sector. It promises to be thought-provoking, provide networking opportunities and include input from across the water industry and related organisations. The event will put the spotlight on our core business – delivering high quality water and wastewater services to our customers 24/7 – with insights into how the water industry can deliver a world-class service through innovation and great customer service.
we do best
We will consider water industry resilience not only for our customers but also the future protection of the environment. Our sector has a significant impact on society, through developing talent and providing career and learning opportunities – this is something very important to both the IOW and me personally and the conference will allow us an opportunity to explore this further. With competition on the horizon, we will also consider whether we can all be unique while selling the same product. Having worked in the water industry for 30 years, I am passionate about what we deliver and how we deliver it. This event promises to bring together what it really means to work in our ever-evolving industry today and in the future. And finally, following the success of previous years, we will also be hosting an informal ‘meet the leaders’ session during the afternoon of Wednesday 11 May and I am delighted that we will be joined by leaders from across the industry, including our regulators and new entrants. I do hope you can join us for what looks to be an exciting and engaging conference and a great opportunity to meet people from right across this fantastic industry.

EXHIBITOR PROFILES Acoustic Sensing
Dräger
Floating Solar UK
SewerBatt™ from Acoustic Sensing Technology quickly and accurately assesses the serviceability of drains, sewers and other pipe networks.
Toxic sludge, aggressive chemicals and flammable gases; work in water treatment plants, sewer systems, tanks or pipelines can be dangerous.
It is a rapid first pass sewer survey solution that prevents wasted investment by efficiently targeting CCTV and sewer cleansing at pipes that have failed or have a high probability of failure.
For over 125 years, both in the UK and internationally, Dräger has proven to be a trusted partner in safety. In addition other key sectors for them include fire and rescue, oil and gas and chemical. They also serve areas such as hospitals, power generation, construction and many more.
A new, reliable, innovative and affordable solution to turn bodies of water, such as drinking water reservoirs, into solar power plants. The floating system Hydrelio© can represent a serious alternative to ground mounted solar solutions.
The primary application of SewerBatt ™ is to proactively target resources for where they are really required, but its capability also supports other applications, including prevention of repeat blockages as part of a reactive maintenance response, thereby under-pinning the value of proactive sewer cleansing and the monitoring of sewer serviceability. SewerBatt ™ is unique in the fact that it can survey up to 100 metres of sewer in just three minutes by utilising acoustic technology rather than camera technology. It is also designed for single person operation and is lightweight and portable in use, allowing access to often otherwise unreachable locations. The use of SewerBatt ™ acoustic technology is extremely cost effective when compared with more traditional surveying methods; it delivers greater operational efficiencies by allowing conventional CCTV surveys and sewer cleansing to be targeted at assets with actual investment needs. The wasted investment avoided can be used to understand the serviceability of more of the network and ultimately to improve customer service.
At Dräger, innovation and quality is at the heart of everything they do and they take their responsibility seriously - right from the customer requirements process, through to research and development and rigorous testing phases. With a wide range of products and solutions that protect both personnel and plant and operations, their portfolio includes gas detection devices (both portable & fixed), air sampling tubes, personal protection and breathing equipment, emergency escape devices and leading drug and alcohol detection and screening solutions.
Floating Solar UK is the first official exclusive distributor of floating PV systems in the UK. The Hydrelio© system is particularly suitable for energy and water intensive industries who cannot afford to waste either land or water and can benefit from the synergy that their system creates between sun and water. Since Europe’s first 200kw system that Mark Bennett built at the end of 2014, Floating Solar UK has been successful in deploying large scale solar systems across the UK for water utility companies including a 3MW and a 6.4MW. Floating Solar UK is a subsidiary of French company Ciel & Terre who have a large worldwide presence and have been involved in the technology since 2006.
All of this is supported and underpinned with extensive service, maintenance, training and rental options – providing our wide customer base with a truly holistic set of safety solutions.
SewerBatt™ returns a Red, Amber or Green (RAG) status immediately after a survey showing whether the pipe is serviceable. Typically, between 30% – 50% of pipes are serviceable, meaning that unnecessary CCTV use or sewer cleansing can be avoided, plus the investment associated with these activities.

Confined spaces and working at height – stay safe with Arco “Disturbing figures released from the HSE for 2014/15 year suggesting that falls from height are the most common cause of death in the workplace, highlights a serious need for professional training” said: Nick Marshall, Divisional Director, Arco Training and Consultancy.
Typically accessed via a vertical shaft, many confined spaces in the water industry present two major safety challenges – compromised air quality from a build up of toxic substances, and the requirement to work from a height. Safety expert Arco is working with professionals across the water and waste industry to equip them with the adequate training to combat these serious mortal risk issues. A significant number of people are killed or seriously injured in confined spaces each year in the UK. This happens in a wide range of industries, including manufacturing, sewage work and agriculture. Those killed include both those working in the confined space and those who try to rescue them without the correct training and equipment. In fact, around 40% of confined spaces deaths involve people trying to rescue those already trapped or injured.1 Despite stringent health and safety measures across most workplaces, these statistics highlight that confined space working still poses a considerable threat to employees today. Arco’s recent acquisition of specialist confined space, health and safety education and support services provider Confined Space Training Services Limited (CSTS) builds on Arco’s growing Training and Consultancy division. This now enhances its own Award Winning mobile confined space training offering and working at height solutions delivered by Total Access, now also part of the Arco family. Practical training covers entry (vertical and horizontal), suitability checks (i.e. for claustrophobia), selection and use of equipment, developing a safe working system and the initiation of self-rescue or full rescue. Simulation exercises give trainees the necessary skills and confidence needed to work in confined space environments. Refresher training will be required periodically and its timing will depend on the continued experience after initial training. Additionally, personnel will need training on the use of equipment involved in safe confined space entry such as gas monitors, breathing apparatus and personal protective equipment.
For those working at height, highly experienced instructors from Total Access can simulate realistic working environments at their site in Staffordshire. They can provide advice on the correct equipment to use, and how to use it, together with practical training which can be taken back to real life situations. Employers have a legal obligation to safeguard the health and safety of employees. This is clearly a major consideration for those employees working at height or in confined spaces. Our managed service approach is designed to allow the employer to focus on their core business rather than burden over stretched resources with these requirements. It has the additional benefits in that our technical expertise and test facilities will ensure that the original performance specifications are maintained and the PPE retains its physical integrity to ensure wearer's safety. Arco offers courses which are accredited by City and Guilds, or bespoke training. Courses can be theoretical or practical and
can be delivered either on site via a fleet of mobile training units or in specialist facilities. Supporting services such as face-fit testing and breathing apparatus training can be offered simultaneously. Arco also provides 24/7 dedicated standby rescue teams and specialist confined space rescue consultants who are highly experienced in confined spaces safety and provide both 'entry' and 'non-entry' rescue solutions to businesses. Arco’s range of confined space cleaning services includes cleaning services for culverts, tanks, vessels, silos and pipes. For further information, please visit: http://safetyservices.arco.co.uk/
