Tony Collier, our past president, will be a hard act to follow but he has not only taken the position as chairman of our board; he has also been appointed to the main board of Altrincham Forward. This will not only strengthen our position but also ensure our continued momentum giving our members a clear and effective voice to help shape the future of Altrincham My goals for my presidency are very simple: In the short term to continue the work already in place to move the chamber forward, to build an attractive package for the membership and to improve communication. Membership is our lifeblood and in the medium term I want to strengthen our base leading to my long-term goal of building a highly respected, self-funding, viable chamber. It is important to have input and ideas from members to shape your chamber of the future. As my presidency begins, we see the beginnings of the new hospital development, which signifies the start of the regeneration of Altrincham. The Chamber will strive to improve our town and, in turn, will help our members who will be part of a thriving business community in South Manchester. Watch this space!

MP attends opening of training centre MP Paul Goggins visited the official opening of Paragon’s new training facility in Sale. During his visit, Mr Goggins, the local MP, found out how the company helps young people gain the qualifications and experience they need to find work. Paragon, a leading provider of apprenticeship training across the Midlands and the South of England, has further expanded its training facilities with the opening of the 2,400 sq ft centre at 4 Brooklands Place, Brooklands Road, Sale. Many young people were in attendance, at the opening including some from local schools and Mr Goggins said: “Too many young people are being denied the chance of a job. I commend Paragon’s apprenticeship programme which is giving practical support and direction to those who are trying to find a way into the world of work and the opportunities that employment brings.” 4

Daniel Okeefe, Managing Director for Paragon, said: “Paragon Skills is delighted to open its tenth apprenticeship centre. By working closely with schools, Connexions and the Job Centre we can support people into jobs with training, For further information about the range of training opportunities available, please call 0800 7832545 or visit, www.paragonskills.co.uk

The One Show comes to town Members of Altrincham Forward were delighted to welcome The One Show and presenter Angela Rippon to Altrincham town Centre. The popular primetime BBC show interviewed several of Altrincham’s small businesses, a representative of the Retailers Forum and an Altrincham Forward meeting at the Town Hall. Cllr. Matt Colledge, Chair of Altrincham Forward, said: - “We were delighted to be approached by The One Show as an example of a place that is positively addressing the challenges facing town centres. I know the show considered other locations and their decision to film here is a reflection of the hard work being done by all involved in Altrincham Forward, including our growing range of fantastic independent businesses.” Board Director of the Chamber and Altrincham Forward, Jackie Campbell and Tony Collier welcomed the visit and highlighted how the partnership is working together. President of the Chamber, SAue Aldridge added: “This was a fabulous opportunity for Altrincham and the local area and clearly shows the great steps that we are all taking in ensuring that Altrincham once again becomes a destination. As Chartered Insurance Brokers, we can signal our commitment to the highest levels of service to our customers.” To date, less than 20 firms in the North West have achieved Chartered status, with only very few brokers based in South Manchester and Cheshire, indicating that this is a highly exclusive award reserved for the leading firms of the broking industry. Citation Employment Law Survey Under rules brought in by the European Parliament, from March this year UK employers will have to allow parents to take 18 weeks’ parental leave per child instead of the current 13 weeks. Currently, parental leave is available to employees on completion of one year’s service, is unpaid and has to be taken before the child’s fifth birthday.

Our survey showed that 45% of businesses asked stated they didn’t know about the new legislation. This is surprising considering the impact it is likely to have, on SMEs in particular.

Almost half of SME’s are unaware of the changes coming in and the effect it may have on their business according to a nationwide survey by employment law specialists Citation.

55% think the new legislation will have an impact on their business; including 1 in 10 who believe it will have a major impact.

As the start date of the new legislation looms, Citation, based in Wilmslow, Cheshire, contacted SME business owners across the UK to understand their awareness of this important new change to employment law. They were asked to answer ‘yes’ or ‘no’ regarding their knowledge of the new legislation and when it comes in. And also share their opinions on the involvement of the EU in the UK’s employment law. Andrea O’ Hare, Head of Personnel and Employment Law said:”This additional five weeks of parental leave per parent per child, to be taken before the child’s fifth birthday, means that every working parent of a child under five will be entitled to take an additional week off work each year.

The survey also reveals the worrying number of business owners concerned by the EU’s increasing involvement in the UK’s employment laws; 63% rated the EU as having too much involvement.” Operating throughout the UK since 1995, Citation provides professional advice and compliance packages to over 7,500 clients, mainly SMEs with between six and 200 employees. Independently endorsed at the highest level, its market leading services provide guaranteed protection in the high risk areas of employment law and health and safety regulations.

Business urged to support cancer awareness campaign Macmillan Cancer Support has launched its new Not Alone campaign which focuses on how one in four people with cancer feel isolated or alone. Businesses can get involved in the campaign through raising awareness around Macmillan services, campaigning and raising funds.

Mediation company launches in Altrincham Resolute Family Mediation has been launched in Altrincham by family solicitor Jane Tenquist.

Amy Lewis, Fundraising Manager, said: “This campaign is the largest we have run since 2008 and is a fantastic opportunity for businesses to work with Macmillan whilst public awareness is high.

Jane is Head of Family Law at Neil Myerson LLP and launched Resolute Family Mediation to provide separating couples with an alternative out-of-court process to resolve issues arising from relationship breakdown.

“Direct communication between the couple is encouraged within a structured and safe framework. Compared to the traditional formal court process, mediation is quicker, more cost effective and less confrontational.”

“With a dedicated account management team in Greater Manchester, we create bespoke account plans in line with your business objectives.

The mediation is aimed at reducing the cost, stress and delay caused by the traditional court process.

Employers can download Macmillan’s free Work & Cancer Toolkit from www.macmillan. org.uk/work

Marathon Man Hopefully, by the time that you read this, our chairman and past president, Tony Collier will be celebrating his completion of the Boston marathon which took place on 15th April. Tony, pictured having completed the Brussels marathon a couple of years ago, is running the Boston Marathon to raise funds for the Children's Adventure Farm Trust, a great charity that his firm Milner Boardman have adopted and over the last 5 years raised over £25,000 for. Before flying off to Boston Tony said, "Training through a really cold winter has been more difficult than I imagined but, despite carrying various injury niggles that I am praying hold out on race day, I have managed to train pretty much 6 days a week and hit weekly mileages of over 50 miles. If I manage to complete the training and the race I will have run approx 650 miles since 24th December, the equivalent of Manchester to some 200 miles South of Paris! I hope to get under 3 hours 30 minutes on race day and for those of you that run on the treadmill this means setting the machine at 12kms per hour and running constantly for 3 1/2 hours! Views of Westminster and a changing Chamber Graham Brady’s annual ‘view from Westminster’ was a major element of this year’s ‘New Year lunch’ … but not the only one. In a rare event it combined with the chamber’s 103rd annual general meeting, opened by the Mayor of Trafford, Councillor Mrs Patricia Young, the installation of new president Sue Aldridge and the end of Tony Collier’s pivotal two year term. “It’s been an amazing two years,” said Tony at the Manchester Airport Marriott Hotel in Hale Barns where the New Year lunch was sponsored by Premium Collections. “It’s been a great honour to represent the town I was born in, where I have lived and worked all my life.” Sue Aldridge was introduced by Jackie Campbell as “a person of ability, intellect, absolutely driven in business, with tremendous enthusiasm and one of the most superb team players I’ve ever met.”

And Graham Brady, MP for Altrincham and Sale West, reviewed the state of the nation’s economy and likely political future. The recession, he said, was not a normal one and there are some “quite intractable problems”. While inflation and wage increases have been kept low, prices are still going up with rising energy costs being “one of the fundamental factors”. Recorded price increases of 168% in gas, 97% in electricity, 63% in water and 60% in council tax, are “going to worry people for quite some time”. Wider public sector finances include insufficient NHS funding, a reduction in the size of armed forces at a time of increasing world threats, reduced police funding and, warned Graham, “we’re going to have to get used to it. Public finances are going to be a difficult for a long time to come.”

The government can’t raise as much as it’s spending, to the tune of £120 billion a year, and to get the economy moving again, he argued, would need a combination of European reform, more flexible EU membership, fewer regulatory burdens and a more competitive approach. His well known dislike for coalition government predicted a possible break down in this one, due to tension between the coalition parties, and the likelihood of another one to follow. “In this country we’ve been used to general elections resulting in clear outcomes,” he said, “but coalition agreements are reached after the election, rather than before, which produces a less transparent way of government that is more difficult to control and hold to account. “In the current circumstances we need a government that is able to take tough decisions with clarity and direction. You’re going to get less of that with a coalition … but we may well get another one next time. It’s very likely.”

The Chamber is delighted to welcome them as a member and very much hope that fellow members will take full advantage of the fantastic facilities.

Presentations were also given from Chamber member Ed Sharp of Minuteman Press and Darren Gregory of Forces Recruitment Services. The next Chamber breakfast is Friday 19 April where members are invited to join the President of the Chamber, Sue Aldridge to learn more about the exciting plans and development which are now on going in Altrincham.

Challenge 1:

A tight deadline was set by the client to design and carry out the refurbishment so that senior management meetings could be relocated to better quality and better located spaces. The tight deadline was achieved by engaging a local architect and a design and build fit out specialist contractor to work in partnership with the audio visual provider to develop the design, whilst planning the procurement of the materials and equipment.

Challenge 2:

14 Lloyd Street, Altrincham, WA14 2DE

During the job, it became necessary to replace the existing roof which leaked and could not support the weight of new air handling equipment.

At the Zip Yard we offer:

The solution adopted was to provide a temporary scaffold and sheeted roof over the building. This allowed the internal finishes to be progressed in parallel with removing the roof, replacing the structure and roof finishes. Also, the air handling plant was installed and completed in the dry, making working conditions more acceptable and minimising the delay that would have occurred during a period of very wet weather.

• Clothing alterations • Dress re-styling • Garment repairs • A tailoring service • And we offer a 1 hour express service for zips, hems and minor repairs We also have on-site fitting rooms, no appointments required.

Jeff Atkins was the Project Manager for the client and brought his knowledge, skills and experience to successfully achieve the project objectives.

Seeking advice over rail line Graham Bowcock

60Seconds

Property owners alongside the proposed route of Britain’s new High Speed line HS2 are being urged to seek advice from a specialist surveyor as soon as possible.

The details released regarding the second stage of HS2 confirm that there are to be two routes north of the West Midlands. The Department for Transport’s map reveals the route running north from Birmingham through Staffordshire to Crewe. From Crewe, the line passes between Winsford and Middlewich then crosses the M6 north of Knutsford. The route broadly follows the A556 towards Lymm where there is a junction with spurs heading towards Manchester and Wigan. Graham Bowcock, of chartered surveyors Berrys, said: “Property owners on the route should take advice as soon as possible. We at Berrys have a dedicated HS2 team with offices based along the length of the route to help you decide your best plan of action.” You can contact Graham on 01606 818953 or graham.bowcock@berrybros.com

New owners outline plans for hotel The Best Western Cresta Court Hotel in Altrincham is under new management after Longrose Buccleuch Hotels (LBML) finalised a multi-million pound deal to acquire the freehold and operating company. LBML has announced that the hotel will remain as a Best Western hotel but will benefit from a programme of immediate refurbishment that will see the new owners invest several million in upgrading all bedrooms and public areas. Garin Davies, operations director of LBML, said: “The hotel has a long history within the south Manchester area and will be a great asset to our company. With the upgrades that we have planned it will improve the Hotel’s appeal to both local corporate users and local people looking to celebrate weddings and other special events. “The hotel has exceptional business potential, with its easy access to Manchester city centre and Manchester Airport making it a great choice for commercial travellers, conference buyers and leisure visitors to both Manchester and Cheshire. Our plans are very much to work with the Hotel team and return the Cresta Court to its status as a premier hotel in the region.”

homes4u achieves Investors in People silver award homes4u, Manchester’s leading property company, has been awarded Investors In People Silver Status. The award recognises the company’s success in helping its team to develop and further their professional skills. To achieve the award, an assessor interviewed a sample of the homes4u team, which is currently over 50, in order to gain an understanding of the people processes that are in place. “The chamber will strive to improve our town, represent the best interests of our members and help them to become part of a thriving business community in South Manchester.” As president, Sue Aldridge has “huge commitment to Altrincham and Sale,” said Jackie Campbell. “She has tremendous tenacity and spirit, she’s driven, motivated and never afraid to challenge.” Sue’s presidential term also started with news that Altrincham Forward’s total funding has now reached £7.5 million after a major donation from Peel Holdings.

ASKTHEEXPERT

Ask the expert... By Andrew Warnes COD Electrical and AKC Kitchen Centre

Q When it comes to having a new kitchen designed, what are the main things you should consider? A new kitchen is a valuable investment in your home and quality of living. It is the heart of your home, and, with the way we live today, it is not just for cooking, but a living space where the family naturally gather to eat, for children to do home work, often a casual entertaining area and may have a settee and television. Put simply, a kitchen needs to be efficient, beautiful and comfortable. Here at COD Electrical and AKC Kitchen Centre, we have many years’ experience in designing the perfect kitchen / living space with our clients. It is very important to design a kitchen with

They should have the choice of English-built bespoke or German-engineered kitchens and have freedom of choice of appliances, but be advised by well trained and impartial advisors.

clients, not for them. After all, we are all different, with different needs.

A client should not be sold to, merely helped in the decision-making process of their beautiful new kitchen. All of this then needs stitching together with high quality delivery, installation and good old fashioned customer service.

It is also important that clients have freedom of choice, for example not being tied by a kitchen designer to one appliance, kitchen or worksurface brand.

BIGINTERVIEW

Human touch pays dividends for law firm John Gorner had always wanted to be a lawyer, driven from his early years by a desire to do a job which gave him daily contact with people and which offered the opportunity to help them overcome problems.

John Gorner Partner, Keoghs, Nicholls, Lindsell & Harris

Having qualified as a solicitor in 1984, he joined Altrincham-based Keoghs, Nicholls, Lindsell & Harris in 2005 and became a partner in 2006, attracted by the firm’s determination to offer a highly personal service to its clients and its commitment to being different in an increasingly corporate world.

unlikely to be competing with mass market legal services providers.”

His role with the firm is as head of its civil litigation department, which includes specialist litigation and community care law teams. John’s key areas are Property Disputes, Will/Trust and Estate Disputes, Community Care Law, and Clinical Negligence. He acts predominantly for individuals battling against authority.

The firm continues to expand. Following its merger with Gregorys Solicitors in 2003, it offers a comprehensive range of specialist legal services throughout the North West and has offices in Altrincham, Stockport, Preston, Oldham and Stoke with new offices shortly to be opened in Chester and other North West locations as yet to be announced.

His clients include many children, the socially and economically disadvantaged and those with mental health problems. He often acts for the Official Solicitor in such cases. He said: “I always wanted to be a lawyer from early in life. I knew that I wanted to help people and being a solicitor provided me with the opportunity to do that. “The areas in which I work are very much a niche and as a firm we see the niche approach as the way forward. We can see value in specialising. “We’re a very unusual company in many ways. All our fee earners are solicitors or those who aspire to be solicitors. We only act for people – we do not act for business nor do we aspire to do so. First meetings with clients are usually with senior rather than junior solicitors; we find this gets the case off on the right foot from the outset. “Legal aid is important to us and has been so for ten-twenty years. We have recently been awarded numerous new legal aid contracts in the North West. This has been a successful strategy for us. We are committed to legal aid despite the Government’s planned cuts. “In both our privately funded and legal aid work we position the business so that we are 22

CV 03.indd 22

That capacity to adapt is one of the reasons for the success of the firm, which recently celebrated its 278th anniversary, a remarkable achievement in any field of business.

Services include Wills, Probate and Trusts, Residential Conveyancing, Litigation, Health and Social Care Law and Immigration. The company prides itself on its family firm approach to individual clients’ needs. For John, the human touch remains key to what the firm does. He said: “The law is changing all the time and we see it as important to move with it but we must not lose sight of the fact that we are dealing with people. “Our motto is traditional values, modern methods. Everything we do is service-based. It is about working with people. “We are very much a people business. People want to meet people face to face. “Our experience is that clients do not want to deal with a call centre miles away when they first ring up a law firm for help. They want to deal directly with someone who is based locally. It’s an approach that works. John said: “As a company we are expanding all the time. The legal market place remains challenging but we have continued to grow. We have five offices now, plus the new offices about to be opened in Chester, and elsewhere in the North West.”

New and Expectant Mothers in the Workplace. When a female worker becomes pregnant it is often a very happy time and a cause for celebration. However, many women worry that they cannot say anything for fear that it may cause problems at work especially in small businesses where staffing levels are low. In today’s society, women constitute a large percentage of the workforce in many industrialised countries, and as a result, addressing pregnancy-related health issues in the workplace is an important factor in order to protect the expectant mother and the unborn baby. Pregnancy should not be equated with ill health and should be regarded as a part of everyday life. Ideally workers should advise their employer as soon as they are able to when they know that they are pregnant. Legally a female employee must give her employer three pieces of information. Firstly, she must tell her employer that she is pregnant prior to or during the 15th week before the expected week of childbirth (EWC). She must then notify her employer of the EWC date, and she must give the date on which she intends to start her maternity leave. This must be given in writing if the employer requests it. Where necessary the company can also ask to see the form MAT B1. The employee can only change the date on which she intends to start her maternity leave by giving 28 days notice before the new intended start date. Again this must be in writing, if requested. Once the employee has advised her employer of the pregnancy they must acknowledge the notification of maternity leave within 28 days. Employers are under a duty to protect the health and safety of their employees and there are special duties that apply in respect of new or expectant mothers in the workplace,

therefore it is important that the employer and the employee work together to deal with any issues, with a full and open communication. Being pregnant does not prevent anyone from working or developing their career and every year around 350,000 women continue to work during their pregnancy and over 69% of them return to work after giving birth. In many workplaces there are conditions that are deemed safe under normal circumstances, but may not be so during pregnancy. For example:* Lifting and carrying of heavy loads * Standing or sitting for long periods of time * Exposure to infectious diseases * Work related stress * Workstation and posture * Excessively noisy workplaces. Therefore, the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations places a legal duty on all employers to assess the health and safety risks that their employees are exposed to. Once the risks have been assessed, as an employer it is your responsibility to implement any necessary control measures to either control, eliminate or reduce the identified risks. As the pregnancy progresses you should constantly monitor and review the assessment to take into account possible risks at various stages of the pregnancy Further advice and guidance on employees requirements in relation to New and Expectant Mothers can be obtained from Citation Plc. We offer a fixed price health and safety and employment law consultancy service in order to help our clients comply with legislation. Loans scheme aims to support budding entrepeneurs A £30 million boost to the Government’s Start-Up Loans scheme has been announced to help young people start their own businesses. The additional money will boost the total available for Start-Up loans to more than £110 million over the next three years. In addition to announcing the new money, Prime Minister David Cameron also revealed that demand from those who had just missed out on the scheme, and the challenges faced to secure loans, had prompted the Government to extend the age limit for application from 24 to 30 years old. More than 3,000 people, including those from Cheshire, have applied or registered an interest in a Start-Up loan and they receive support and mentoring to develop their ideas. When the business plan is approved, they will be able to access financial support in the form of a low interest loan typically in the order of £2,500 with a repayment period of up to five years. Mr Cameron said: “Start-Up loans are an important part of my mission to back aspiration, and all those young people who want to work hard and get on in life, so this country competes and thrives in the global race. “They are a great way to help this next generation of entrepreneurs get the financial help – and the confidence – to turn that spark of an idea into a growing, thriving business. “It is by backing our entrepreneurs and championing small business that we can drive forward and grow the economy, and equip this country for the highly competitive era we are in.” To administer the Start-Up loans, the Government created a new body to provide guidance and direction, the Start-Up Loans Company, chaired by entrepreneur James Caan. He said: “There has been a major shift in the way business is viewed by the public, and entrepreneurs are now seen as creative and exciting role models

It is only with this renewed focus on youth entrepreneurship that we will create more jobs and wealth and see the economy flourish once again.

and I am delighted to see that more and more young people are now looking to set up their own business. “It is only with this renewed focus on youth entrepreneurship that we will create more jobs and wealth and see the economy flourish once again. “Start-Up Loans enable young people to harness their skills, and gives each budding entrepreneur not just a low interest loan, but also the help and support from an experienced mentor to guide them to success. I am proud to chair the Start-Up Loans Company, responsible for delivering this excellent initiative.” Business Minister Michael Fallon said: “The Government is determined to back young people who aspire to get on in business and create jobs. The Start-Up Loan scheme has been very popular and the extra investment will help to meet the demand for this kind of assistance.” More information is available at www.startuploans.co.uk

SPECIALFEATURECONSTRUCTION

Hope among the gloom for construction sector At first glance the predictions for the construction sector look gloomy but in among the darkness are shafts of light. Nationally, research by industry body CITBConstructionSkills revealed a stark picture of 2012. Last year saw 60,000 jobs lost, and a 9% fall in output and, over the past five years, the industry has gone through one of its most difficult periods since the Second World War. The Construction Skills Network report – the industry’s annual skills forecast - lays the blame on n 5% downturn in private housing construction n 10% per cent downturn in commercial sector construction n 15% downturn in infrastructure construction Nearly every sector of the industry will continue to struggle for the next five years, according to the report, although there are some optimistic signs; private housing, repair and maintenance and industrial sectors are predicted to achieve something approaching consistent growth. Recruitment to the industry is predicted to run at an average of 29,050 a year from now until

28

CheshireVoice

CV 03.indd 28

2017 – largely to fill vacancies arising from those leaving the sector. New work output is expected to see growth average 0.9% per year compared with a stronger figure of 1.5% on average per year for repair and maintenance. The strongest performing sector is forecast to be the industrial one. To tackle the national challenge headon, more than 1,400 construction bodies and employers have joined forces in the CITB-ConstructionSkills-inspired Construction4Growth campaign, which has been taken to Government ministers The plan suggests: n Ways to get projects delivered as part of the Government’s pledged capital investment in construction n Investment in shovel-ready repair and maintenance projects to get unemployed construction workers back on site

n A mandatory requirement for teachers to undertake taster courses to understand the value of a vocational career Judy Lowe, Deputy Chairman of CITBConstructionSkills, said: “Construction is a vital engine of UK growth. While construction struggles for its survival, it’s impossible to see how the UK economy can generate significant growth.” “What’s bad for construction is bad for the economy, so doing nothing is not an option. There is too much at stake. Construction remains the only industry that can kick start the economy in the short, medium and long term. We know that, for every £1 invested in construction, £2.84 is generated for the wider economy. There are currently over 150,000 unemployed construction workers. “This potentially costs the economy £2.1bn a year in unemployment benefit and lost tax revenue. The actions we are proposing are straightforward, easy to implement and will deliver the results that re-establish construction as an essential element of economic growth.”

SPECIALFEATURECOMMERCIALPROPERTY

Expertise vital when it comes to making the big move

Selecting a new property is a major decision for any business. There are so many things to consider, so many things that can go wrong, so many details to be closely examined before the paperwork is signed. The challenges presented by the property market are why many business owners and managers turn to specialist companies who are experienced in the field.

Some property industry exponents say that they are seeing a slow return in confidence when it comes to investing. Companies are starting to feel that the time is right for expansion again.

That decision makes even more sense when taking into account the past 12 months, with the effects of the recent recession still being felt and the slow rate of recovery complicating the judgements that need to be made.

The role of the property consultant when a company has decided to invest is to take as much of the hassle away from the process as possible and that starts with locating the kind of sites that would appeal to a client.

Some companies delay or even abandon plans in difficult trading times, and others proceed more cautiously but, on the flip side, the economic downturn has led to competitive property prices in many areas.

Consultants have a vast knowledge of land and buildings available and their expertise is invaluable when it comes to selecting the best one. Their knowledge can save a lot of time. For those in the know, there are some excellent opportunities available in Cheshire.

It is often said that the best time to invest is in a downturn and the same could be said to be true when it comes to property. Moving into somewhere bigger and better is a show of confidence that speaks volumes for clients and prospective clients.

30

CV 03.indd 30

Recent surveys of businesses seeking to expand or relocate have suggested that the main considerations when it comes to investing in new property has been the need to keep costs under control and also the impact a purchase or lease may have on company cash flow. That is true of all

companies but particularly so for small businesses taking their first tentative steps towards expansion. To address those concerns, the number of companies seeking lease arrangements rather than buying outright does seem to be increasing, although there are still companies that prefer the idea of owning their own premises, seeing it as an investment for the future. When the right site has been selected by the client, property consultants are crucial when it comes to brokering the deals because they understand their clients’ needs, and anxieties, and are able to negotiate with property owners to secure the best terms. Once terms have been agreed, property consultants will also be on hand to offer a continuing service until the move has been made and the client is happily settled in a new home. Even in difficult times, investing in property can make good business sense.
