As the CEO of Sussex Enterprise I often ask myself ‘ Do we engage enough with our members and how can I improve our services to you? The definition of customer service is “the engagement of customers with one another, with a company or a brand. The initiative for engagement can be either consumer or companyled and the medium of engagement can be on or offline.” That engagement can either make or break any understanding.

So how can I ensure that Sussex Enterprise engages with businesses and provide you with the service you require?

Firstly I need to look internally at my team, my employees.

The team at Sussex Enterprise are my biggest advocates and communicate the benefits that our services can bring to you.

Your first point of contact is through the employees. That’s why I have been spending a lot of time with the team reviewing our processes, how we interact with you and looking at ways to enhance our service to you. By listening to your needs, improving our communication, having greater participation through our steering groups, we can bring you an improved offering.

I joined Sussex Enterprise as an apprentice in December 2013 and transferred over to the International Trade Department In April 2014. On a day to day basis we process all different kinds of documents that our customers require for trading to international customers, as well as offer guidance to anyone who needs our help.

I think apprenticeships are really good ways to get young people working because not only are you in a work environment, which helps with your confidence, you are also learning at the same time. For me working in the International Trade team is always exciting, you can come across new things everyday and find out things you never knew. At Sussex Enterprise we work with a wide variety of businesses and are always happy to see new customers.

The Year The Zebras Came To Gatwick From the Champagne reception to the spectacular Zebra Tribal Dance by 12 talented dancers, the launch of the new Gatwick Office of ACUMEN BUSINESS LAW was a true celebration of the firm’s growth and success.

Approximately 270 business executives booked to come along to the glitzy launch cocktail party that was held at the grand Gatwick Mercedes Showroom. Guests were greeted with a glass of Champagne on arrival together with an Acumen Cash Card with £300.00 to use on legal fees.

Most guests were then attracted to the marvellous smell of the scrumptious, freshly cooked food served by ASK Italian on the night.

But did we say Cocktail Party? Yes we did! A buzzing and busy Cocktail Bar with

three impressive mixologists were frantically making cocktails throughout the night.

The most popular ones were Acumen on the Beach and The Litigator. For those who were driving, the refreshing and delicious Fixed Fizz (a name inspired by the ground breaking fixed fee charging system of ACUMEN BUSINESS LAW) was on offer.

While sipping cocktails and networking, the Jukebox DJ was playing the delegates’ tracks that were chosen in advance, completing the fantastic party atmosphere on the night.

No doubt, the ‘Acumen Wow Factor’ was the 12 spectacular Zebra Dancers who conjured the tribal warrior spirit and enchanted the crowd with their surprise entrance to the sound of loud tribal drums.

Dressed as zebras, with tribal face paint and all the accessories, they danced their way in through the front door among the delegates who were networking and created a spontaneous, almost biblical parting of the crowd who watched the performance with amazement. They then took to the stage, and wowed the delegates further, jumping and summersaulting off it acrobatically with the grace and beauty of their animal inspiration.

Afterwards, delegates enjoyed more cocktails, more networking and some fun shots at the photo booth. Others also recorded some heart warming video messages in the booth, while many walked around looking at the wonderful cars on display.

The showroom, which was decorated throughout with black, white and a

touch of orange, to suit the Acumen corporate colours, was a fitting venue for a magnificent event.

Penina Shepherd the Founder & MD of ACUMEN BUSINESS LAW said: “A day after the event we received more than 100 messages via email & social media from business clients and contacts saying how much they enjoyed the night. One good business contact of ours even sent us the most beautiful bouquet of flowers on Friday, which really made our day!”

Shepherd then added: “Of course the launch is just the first step in many more that we need to take to form and grow the Acumen Family in Gatwick as we have done in Brighton & Hove. I know that we will give it our all to make it a success and with the current support we already have in the area, hopefully we can replicate the Brighton success all over again”

Brighton Seafront Regeneration continues The next phase of regeneration for Brighton’s western seafront has been formally unveiled.

This includes a new creative retail quarter on Brighton beach, and ground was broken for the construction of the Brighton i360 attraction.

Members of the community, local businesses and the i360 team gathered to see Brighton & Hove Mayor, Cllr Brian Fitch, cut a ribbon to open the arches, which have undergone restoration, between Alfresco and the future i360 site, with eight independent small creative firms opening for business.

Brighton & Hove Council leader, Councillor Jason Kitcat led a group including David Marks, the architect behind the i360 and the London Eye, putting the first ceremonial spade in the ground to formally start building works for the Brighton i360, the world’s first vertical cable car observation tower.

Cllr Kitcat said: “Our seafront is our most important asset that helps make our tourism industry such a great success in Brighton & Hove. Our innovation here will make all the difference to helping the city continue as one of the UK’s most desirable and successful tourist destinations in the years to come. Bold decisions by the council and our partners have made sure this work has happened.”

Cllr Ian Davey, deputy leader of the city council, said: “The restoration of the arches has been carried out as part of ongoing work to strengthen the A259 seafront road by the council’s transport team, with

external funding from the Local Transport Plan.

“The arches are stunning, with some really superb businesses already leasing them and helping to make a very special new creative retail quarter on the seafront.”

David Marks of Marks Barfield Architects said: “It has taken over eight years to get to this point, but the Brighton i360 will now be a reality and will be one of the most exciting visitor attractions in the world.

The i360 will be the world’s first vertical cable car; an engineering wonder and a major new performing arts, conference, dining and hospitality venue for Brighton.

It will generate more footfall to this part of Brighton – and we hope bring about the sort of transformation that the London Eye helped create on the South Bank.”

Rachel Clark, West Pier Trust, said: “This is a very special occasion for the West Pier Trust because it marks the beginning of a long awaited new era. The i360 will be a brilliant attraction and entirely in the spirit of the West Pier – a vertical pier. It will transform the site and the entire city.”

Ron Crank, Chief Executive of Coast to Capital LEP, which has made a seven-year loan of £4m to assist the Brighton i360, said:, “All the elements are here to create a true economic regeneration of this area, attracting investment and visitors to this location whilst increasing employment growth within the Coast to Capital region.

We are delighted to be supporting this important project and look forward to seeing its progress as it develops on Brighton’s iconic seafront.”

Newhaven Port expansion plans welcomed Locate East Sussex has welcomed expansion plans that could see up to 150 jobs created at Newhaven Port.

Harbour authority Newhaven Port and Properties (NPP) is submitting an application for a new quay which would handle a variety of cargoes and may result in a new ferry terminal being built.

The authority also plans to clear an area of land behind it to provide an area for port activities and cargo management.

Philip Johnson, Director of Locate East Sussex, the county’s inward investment and commercial property service, said: “This is brilliant news for Newhaven, which is becoming an increasingly attractive place for businesses to locate.

“Developing the port will allow for increased traffic. This will bring huge economic benefits, importantly including the creation of jobs for local people.”

He pointed to the relocation of Forfars Bakery from Brighton to Newhaven earlier this year as another sign of the area’s regeneration.

Locate East Sussex helped the company, which employs 150 staff, to secure £230,000 from the Regional Growth Fund for the move.

Mr Johnson added: “Newhaven is emerging as a popular hub for business premises for larger SMEs and manufacturing firms, and this news will create further interest in the town, as well as improve East Sussex’s commercial offer as a whole.”

A public consultation on the expansion plans will be held at the Hillcrest Centre in Newhaven from 2pm to 8pm on October 14.

Matt and Lorraine created Young Startup Talent, a community based project aimed at inspiring and encouraging young people to explore their entrepreneurial flair.

The team and I at Sussex Enterprise meet businesses all the time and again and again, we hear the same issues.

These are - preparing young people for the world of work and improving skills, access to finance, making it easier for businesses to export, rebuilding infrastructure, driving down business costs and making the European trading bloc work better for business.

That is why the British Chambers of Commerce (of which Sussex Enterprise is a member) launched a nine page business manifesto - A BRITAIN BUILT FOR GROWTH. This is a particularly important event as we approach the general election next year and the possibility of a referendum on the UK’s membership of the EU. Whatever the results of these momentous events, we hope that the party or government in power in 2015 and their representatives in Sussex will have read our manifesto, which Sussex businesses have contributed to, and listened to what they have asked for. We are confident that some of our proposals will be accepted leading to an education system that better prepares young people with skills to successfully make the transition to work, a new era in business banking where businesses enjoy better terms and conditions, more businesses with the support to break into new overseas markets. In addition, businesses will benefit from a tax system that supports business growth, we will see infrastructure improvements and our relationship with the EU will reflect what businesses tell us they want.

Our ambitions for Sussex businesses may be high but as a member of one of the leading voices for business and with a number of BCC proposals adopted by the Chancellor at the last budget, we are confident of change. New office opened by accountants Hilton Sharp & Clarke, a firm of accountants with offices in Brighton and Billingshurst, have announced the opening of their new office in Haywards Heath.

Joe Rose steps into New Role New premises for high tech audio visual specialists Avensys, the largest independent Audio Visual specialists in the South East, have consolidated their commercial, retail, event and head office function into a new 40,000 sq ft site in the heart of Fleming Way, Manor Royal.

Avensys is a family run firm, established 14 years ago by Markus Wood in Copthorne, West Sussex with just three employees – the firm is now a multi-million pound business that employs more than 40 staff.

Sussex-based firm Big Foot Systems, which leads the way in non-penetrative rooftop support solutions, has announced the appointment of Joe Rose as Technical Marketing Manager.

Joe has been with Big Foot for three and a half years and was previously Regional Specification Manager at Big Foot Systems – London & South East. In this role he provided support solutions for plant and associated services on flat roofs working with construction professionals along the supply chain, from architects to contractors.

Joe’s new role will involve managing all the technical and marketing functions of Big Foot Systems providing solutions for its customers throughout the world.

Dementia care home set to create 100 jobs Guild Care’s new dementia care home and wellbeing centre will create 100 new jobs in Worthing.

Karen Lisher, one of the charity’s most experienced home managers, has been appointed to manage the new home, Haviland House, at Goring-by-Sea, which will open in January.

Karen, who has been part of the Bournemouth University’s Dementia Working Group, who have contributed to the new project, said: “Supporting people with dementia is an exceptionally rewarding career.

I am incredibly pleased to have been offered this wonderful opportunity and I am very passionate about making this home a very special place for residents with dementia.”

Haviland House will provide high quality specialist dementia care for 60 residents at all stages of dementia.

The home will feature distinctive reminiscence rooms and a large secure garden, with sensory and themed areas to help people connect with the past.

Microsoft boost for young games expert A former Games Design student at City College Brighton and Hove has won a place on Microsoft’s accelerator programme Microsoft Ventures.

Isaac Howie-Brewerton, 22, is now Creative Director of games company Pixel Blimp, one of only 12 companies to be selected to take part in the 14-week workshop in London, which could result in an opportunity to pitch to top venture capitalists and investors.

He said: “This opportunity means an exciting new chapter for our company, because it’s given us the resources and tools to upscale our development and deliver larger, better products than was previously achievable. The access to established industry veterans as mentors is allowing us to gain insight into the industry that we wouldn’t otherwise get.”

I see so many small businesses with a sound business plan but no marketing plan to deliver it.

This is where things can get lost in translation and can make or break a growth strategy. Consider your goals, your growth plans, the need for acquiring new customers and new channels to market – what exactly are you going to do to get there and when? Investing the time in a clear marketing plan from the start will be one of the most important things you can do.

Delivering your marketing plan doesn’t have to be expensive We would all love to have the large amounts of budget that some small businesses seem to spend (or waste) on their marketing – but in truth you are unlikely to have a huge marketing budget. The best you can do is to focus the small budget you have, in the right areas, to generate the maximum results and at the right times. Could you get away with the basic package – logo, website and a suite of branded stationery? This could be done really well for as little as a few hundred pounds. If you go back to basics and understand which channels your potential customers are likely to see or engage

in, then you will head down the right path. From there, you need to assess the funds needed for each one – advertising for example, is an expensive medium but requires little time and in some cases can drive significant results for local marketing.

Social media however, is mostly free but requires effort to make it work properly. You can take on some elements yourself and outsource some – play to your strengths.

REMEMBER – above all else, be bold and write that marketing plan, put yourself in your customer’s shoes when doing it and don’t throw good money away on scattergun marketing – get focused and stay focused.

An Icy Experience The board of a leading Sussex solicitors had a chilling experience when they were drenched in icy water, all in the name of charity.

To keep the challenge going and raise even more money for charity, Mayo Wynne Baxter Solicitors decided to nominate three other firms’ board of directors to take up the challenge. They were Piglets Pantry, Reeves and Samuel & Son.

Trainee solicitor at the firm, Jo Ironside, decided that the current ‘ice-bucket challenge’ craze would be the perfect opportunity to raise money for the firm’s sponsored charity, Macmillan in Sussex. A total of £675 was raised.

Refrigerated truck has ‘green’ credentials West Horsley Dairy has launched what could well be Britain’s most environmentally-friendly refrigerated truck.

The FUSO Canter Eco Hybrid has a diesel-electric drivetrain that offers fuel savings and correspondingly lower CO2 emissions, compared to a standard dieselengined vehicle.

Instead of a traditional air blown fridge, its insulated body is chilled by a eutectic system that does not require a power source while deliveries are being

made, so produces no carbon or noise pollution. The 7.5-tonne chassis was supplied by Mercedes-Benz Dealer Rossetts Commercials.

The diary was founded by husband-andwife team Catherine and Philip Colton, who remain at the helm as Joint Managing Directors.

Matt’s business career stands testament to his ability as someone who makes things happen, which has seen him grow his business into an award-winning company delivering marketing, design and printing to clients across the South East and beyond.

The company, which works with a multitude of clients ranging from

Effectively, the company operates its clients’ marketing departments.

It was not always a smooth ride, though, and Matt had to use all the resources at his disposal to survive to ensure that his company survived.

Now aged 30 and a winner of Gatwick Diamond Young Entrepreneur of the Year, he said: “I started the business in my bedroom

In addition to growing Creative Pod, in 2009 he became a codirector of Young Start-up Talent, of Crawley, a community-based project helping 16-25 years olds with an entrepreneurial flair for business to make their dreams a reality.

The project operates in the Croydon, Gatwick, East Kent, West Kent and Brighton & Hove areas with a £50,000 prize in each area and Matt feels passionate about the way it encourages young would-be businessmen and women.

He said: “I do feel that many young people would consider setting up in business for themselves but society suppresses that drive.

“Some of them have a real entrepreneurial spirit but need help to get around the way that it is suppressed and that is where we come in.”

The venture has now received international recognition. Matt and Lorraine Nugent, the managing director of Media Word Waves, who founded Young Start-up Talent

together, were invited as guest speakers at the International Youth Time Forum held at the end of September in Rhodes, Greece.

The International Youth Time Forum takes place once a year with the main aim to bring business, government, educators and young people from around the world together to come up with solutions to solve youth unemployment.

Matt said: “It was exciting to be asked to represent the UK at the forum and tell people about what we have achieved.”

As if his life was not busy enough, Matt’s other passion is his work as a Director of Crawley Town Football Club, playing his role in the club’s remarkable journey from the obscurity of non-league to Division One of the Football League.

Crawley, which was founded in 1896, secured promotion to the Football League in the 2010–11 season, the same year they reached the 5th round of the FA Cup where they lost to Manchester United.

Matt, who became a director and board member in 2013, said: “I have supported the club since I was a child. I remember standing behind

He said: “The Chamber has gone through a lot of change in the past four years and our job is to improve the way it communicates with the local business community.

“I think that in recent years other business organisations have grown stronger and we have to get Sussex Enterprise back up the pecking order.

“We will be staging exciting events and using 21st Century methods such as social media to engage with the business community.

“The Chamber offers so much. For instance, it is possible that Gatwick Airport will be awarded a new runway so we need to make sure that businesses are aware of the Chamber’s range of export services to take advantage of that opportunity.”

Its size has been both its strength and its weakness but now an enterprising project is tackling the challenges presented by this important site.

A fifth of a way through its fiveyear plan, the Manor Royal Business District (BID) is working hard to improve the area and create a strong sense of community among the businesses that trade there.

The site’s importance cannot be under-estimated. Situated just two miles from London Gatwick Airport and a major motorway junction, Manor Royal is a popular choice for a diverse range of occupiers, including a host of blue chip global brands.

Straddling the Sussex and Surrey county borders, the district is the

biggest business park of the Gatwick Diamond area and one of the south east’s premier mixed activity employment hubs.

Strong as the site is, there was a problem in the fragmented way that it had developed over the years, according to Steve Sawyer, Executive Director of the Manor Royal Business District BID team.

He said: “The challenge was that Manor Royal had tended to develop in a higgledy-piggedly way right from the beginning.

“Land was developed, sites were sold on but, although the park has been around a long time, there was no overall management.

“It did not feel cohesive, there was no sense of place or community.

People did not know their neighbours or the services they offered and Manor Royal as a place had no presence or brand to speak of.

“People with long memories talked of the days when people did know each other but life has changed, people are busier.

“What we set out to do through the BID was re-create that sense of community and also improve the infrastructure of the business district.”

The vehicle selected for the work was to create a Business Improvement District (BID) of which there are 150 nationwide. The BID was created in the summer of 2013 by local businesses who voted in

The BID company (MRBD Limited), managed by local businesses is responsible for delivering the BID and allows Manor Royal businesses to create a fund and attract additional investment to improve the district.

That work has included three significant capital projects: * The installation of CCTV and ANPR cameras in conjunction with the local police in order to reduce crime. Positioned at strategic locations throughout the Business District and monitored 24/7, the cameras mean that no vehicles will leave or enter Manor Royal without being captured on camera.

Steve said: “Everything that we do is guided by our business plan, we go back to it all the time, and crime was something that businesses had mentioned.

In the past year we have seen crime drop significantly but we still can’t be complacent. ” * Better broadband. The BID team has been exploring ways to make sure Manor Royal is well served for broadband, crucial in a fast-moving business world.

Steve said: “This was another thing that came up time and time again and our project is about ensuring businesses have better connectivity.” * Better facilities, including Crawter’s Brook People’s Park, turning an otherwise under-managed green area into a usable space for informal meetings, relaxation and respite for staff.

Steve said: “Something that was mentioned time and time again was the

need to improve the appearance of the area.

“People said there was nowhere to go and relax on a lunchtime and the idea of the park is to address that.”

The team has also liaised with local government on schemes to improve the roads, worked with Sussex Wildlife Trust to create wildlifefriendly areas, staged know-yourneighbour events and volunteer days, run energy conservation initiatives and issued regular newsletters. The BID is looking more closely at how to

promote inter-trading through a “Buy Manor Royal” project.

Steve said: “A lot of effort has gone into restoring the sense of community, getting businesses talking to each other, finding out what their neighbours do, exploring ways of working together.

“I think that the very fact there is a BID has helped bring people together.

It has been challenging because there was not really a sense of community when we started out so we began from a low base.

“However, it is worth doing and we are already seeing improvements to the infrastructure of the park through projects like the cameras initiative and roadworks and, at the same time, more people are talking to each other and finding out how they can help each other but there is still some way yet to go.”

One approach for conference originators is to bring in a specialist company to do the legwork The staff at these outsource companies will have encountered just about every problem presented by the process and take all the worry away from the company originating the event.

Linked to the conferences and exhibitions market is the need to offer corporate hospitality as part of the package and many conference and events organisers are integrating such attractions into their events.

A recent report by Market Intelligence provider Key Note said that, although the economic downturn resulted in a significant drop in activity in the corporate hospitality sector, some companies still saw good reasons for continuing.

Key Note said that the total value of the UK corporate hospitality market fell by 2.5% to £1.2bn between 2007 and 2011 but that some companies have continued to invest in corporate events, recognising that strengthening the relationships between client and business partner during a recession is more important than ever.

Spectator sports remained the most popular choice for provision of corporate entertainment, including everything from a trip to the races or a visit to see a football match.

Meet The Experts Whilst the UK economy is officially out of recession, low medium term domestic economic growth prospects & touch points of fragility within the international economy can still create a multiplier effect which make for an opaque economic picture against which companies will be determining their forward investment strategies & resource requirements.

The job of Government is to create the conditions in which enterprise can flourish and jobs can be created, the R&D tax credit scheme can do just that.

FACTS & FAQ’s The R&D tax credit/relief scheme has been referred to as “The single biggest Govt. funding mechanism for business” by the Dept. of BIS, and with average annual claim pay-outs by Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs (HRMC), who administer the scheme running at an unprecedented £46,000 for a SME and £320,000 for a Large Company; the fact that just under 16,000 of an estimated 150,000 scheme qualifying companies claimed in the 2012/13 fiscal year, means that there will almost certainly be company’s within the Chamber who have not claimed their entitlement, that’s a significant “cash back” sum every year that could be reinvested into growing your business.

How does it work? The R&D tax credit/ relief scheme is a EU initiative that allows companies to recover development costs invested in innovative product & manufacturing processes. Over £9.0bn has been given back to UK businesses since its inception in 2000/01. Company’s with under 500 employees & an annual turnover not exceeding €100 million fall under the Small or Medium-sized Enterprise (SME) Scheme, above that and you would claim under the large company, Research & Development Expenditure Credit Scheme (RDEC). On average an SME can recover up to 32.6% of their invested qualifying development costs.

What activities qualify? The scope of qualifying R&D activity (or projects) for scheme purposes is broader than most companies think. The regime states… “From projects seeking to achieve an advance in science and technology, to activities that make an appreciable improvement to an existing process, product, material, device or service through scientific or technological

changes”. However, many companies get “stuck” at the words “advance in science & technology” and wrongly assume that if they don’t have an R&D Lab or employees in white coats, they don’t qualify.

This could not be further from the truth, in that a UK Ltd company, trading 12 months or more, employing PAYE staff &/or using 3rd party services, would probably stand to benefit if their activities included any of the following: Developing new or regularly changing the way they make their products; Developing and improving manufacturing processes or services, or Appreciably improving products, materials or devices, including software, IT solutions or products.

Undertaking testing, developing samples & prototypes.

Employing staff with a technical or scientific background.

Importantly, the development doesn’t have to be new or unique, a competitor may already do it – as long as the technical knowledge was not in the public domain at the time of your development activities.

I.e. you were not using readily deducible or readily available knowledge when undertaking the development(s). In this way, then, one does not have to re-invent the wheel to benefit from the tax scheme; installing a bespoke IT system or process that streamlines daily operations and optimises efficiency could potentially qualify for a claim. Also pertinent is the fact that a company can claim against cancelled or failed project investment costs.

The above activities certainly apply to a broad cross section of Sussex Chamber member companies.

What’s it worth? Because a company can claim back 2 financial accounting periods of qualifying investment, that’s an immediate £92K back if you’re a SME and £640k for a large company if working to average

HMRC annual claim values. Loss-making companies can claim as a timely cash credit or elect to offset the claim benefit against future profits. This all makes the benefit of a scheme that usually pays out within 1 month of a company filing its claim with the HMRC even more attractive.

Making a claim: As a specialist tax area, successful maximized claims are based their technological & scientific merits and are not something that can easily be performed solely by the company or by their accountants in isolation, unlike many other aspects of company tax. The financial calculations are the final output, 1st you need to understand what does & doesn’t qualify in order to fully maximize a claim and be able to clearly convey & validate the foundations for your claim to the HMRC according to scheme criteria.

Making staff benefits work harder for you Small businesses are the backbone of Britain; but in the pursuit of success, could you be at risk of ill health and burnout?

Owners and employees of Britain’s small and medium sized firms have reason to be proud – they make up 99.9% of the UK private sector’s businesses, employ nearly three-fifths of its workforce, and account for 48% of the turnover. But, according to AXA PPP healthcare’s new poll taken from employees who work in small businesses, full-on pursuit of commercial success may be putting them at increased risk of ill health and burnout.

Putting the business first?

Nearly half (47%) of the 1,100 employees we surveyed said that they regularly work four or more hours of overtime a week, with 29% putting in seven or more extra hours a week. For over half of the people who regularly work overtime (52%), the extra hours are unpaid.

Long working hours can often be embedded into small business culture. AXA PPP healthcare’s findings showed that a fifth (21%) of respondents take fewer than 30 minutes for lunch, with 12% ploughing on without stopping for a lunch break at all.

And by putting the business first, 27% have cancelled time with friends and family in the past three months due to working over and above their contracted hours.

Parents in particular can feel the pinch.

For those with children living at home, 18% have missed a child’s event such as a parents’ evening or school play in the past three months and, for those with younger children, over half (54%) have continued to work after putting them to bed.

Healthy people, healthy business “Small and medium sized business are the backbone of the economy – driving innovation, enterprise and growth,” says Glen Parkinson, SME Director at AXA PPP healthcare. “Their commitment is commendable yet our study shows that owners and bosses may be putting themselves and their employees at increased risk of burnout and ill health through protracted overwork.

“Most owners and bosses of small and medium sized firms recognise the link between health and wellbeing and productivity,” Parkinson continued, “and many are acting on the insight by providing benefits such as healthcare cover and access to counselling helplines to help employees deal with the pressures in their lives.

“A focus on wellbeing can help smaller and medium sized firms to thrive. Owners should prioritise their own health and the health of their employees as much as they prioritise their pursuit of commercial success,” he said.

‘Work is best enjoyed in good health and, while that can’t be guaranteed, having the right tools in place to support wellbeing and a growing business is a great way to keep the Backbone of Britain strong.”

Getting the right support Mental health remains a concern, however: 71% of survey respondents who’d been diagnosed with a mental health condition such as stress, anxiety or depression said they wouldn’t feel comfortable speaking

In the past, when people thought about health in the workplace, they mostly envisaged health and safety but recently there has been a growing concern with a good work-life balance as well.

According to ACAS, the benefits of promoting a healthy workplace include more motivated workers, improved customer service, fewer absences and greater creativity.

The organisation advises companies to have in place effective policies for managing people issues, high levels of trust between employees and managers and line managers who are confident and trained in people skills ACAS also says that a healthy workplace is one where workers feel valued and involved in decisions.

The organisation advocates managers who identify problems at an early stage and seek to resolve them using informal methods.

It says that such companies make use appropriate health services, such as. occupational health, where practical, to keep employers healthy and get them back to work quickly if they do have problems.

ACAS says it helps if managers have been trained so that they who know how to manage common health problems such as mental health and musculoskeletal disorders Another suggestion from health advisors is healthy options in the canteen, including plenty of salads and fruit.

As for employees, NHS experts say they must play their part to support the company.

The NHS say that knowing how to deal with pressure at work is critical and its advice includes learning to identify the symptoms of stress as well as learning to prioritise your workload.

Certainly, if you work on a computer a lot, it’s important to take regular breaks. That means for every hour at your keyboard you should rest for at least five to ten minutes.

The need for regular exercise is also advised by occupational health experts, whose suggestions include walking over to someone’s desk at work rather than speaking to them by phone, take the stairs instead of the lift and using your lunch break to exercise. business edge november/december 2014

Secure funding to help your business grow Businesses seeking to expand or relocate in East Sussex have just a few months left to apply for grant or loan funding administered by Locate East Sussex.

Locate East Sussex supports growing businesses through the Small Business Grant and Business Growth Funding Schemes, which are financed by the government’s Regional Growth Fund.

These schemes offer financial support to start-ups, micro as well as small and medium sized businesses and social enterprises that are planning to invest in new capital projects.

Projects can include the purchase of machinery, equipment and vehicles, marketing drives, testing new markets or processes, specialist staff training where they will lead to business growth and the creation of new jobs, as well as the enhancement and refurbishment of commercial property.

The Small Business Grants Scheme offers grants of between £3,000 and £5,000, while the Business Growth Funding Scheme

offers grants and loans for applications over £5,000 up to £250,000. Each programme is based on the total investment and projections of the number of new jobs that will be created and all loans and grants must be match-funded by applicants.

Locate East Sussex attracts new business investment into East Sussex and promotes the growth of companies already based here.

Since its launch, Locate East Sussex has overseen a £17.9million boost to the county’s economy. It has facilitated grant and loan funding totalling some £2.5million and this has been matched by funding of £15.4million from local companies. As a result, some 367 jobs have been created and safeguarded.

Philip Johnson, Director of Locate East Sussex, said: “We want to help as many businesses as possible realise their potential, and our Small Business Grants and Business Growth Funding Schemes are a fantastic way of helping growing companies achieve their goals. I would urge any businesses with plans to expand to contact us and find out how we can assist.

“Alongside our work in accessing funding for businesses, we provide valuable advice and offer help with location decisions to firms moving into this area or those that are expanding their operations.”

Among the companies that have benefited is Forfars Bakery which secured funding of £230,000 for relocation from Brighton to Newhaven.
